be thankful for是固定搭配,意为“对……
根据后文“For the little patients, gifts might include toy cars... And for those who are older, books might be a good choice.”,说明她是根据不同对象精心“挑选”礼物。pick out意为“挑选”,符合语境;hand in“上交”、put away“收起来”和take away“拿走”均不符。

Miss Martha Meacham kept the little bakery on the corner. At forty, she had two false teeth and a sympathetic (同情的) heart.
She had two thousand dollars in the bank. Many people, who were not as good as Miss Martha, had married.
A customer came in two or three times a week, and soon Miss Martha began to take an interest in him. He was a quiet, middle-aged man, wearing glasses and a brown beard. ① His clothes were always old and patched. But he looked tidy and had very good manners. He always bought two loaves of stale bread. Fresh bread was five cents a loaf, while stale loaves were two for five. ②
Once, while serving him,Miss Martha saw a red and brown mark (污点) on the customer’s fingers. ③ She was sure then that he was an artist and very poor. No doubt he lived in an attic (阁楼), where he painted pictures, ate stale bread and thought of the good things to eat in Miss Martha’s bakery. ④
Miss Martha’s heart was a sympathetic one. To check if she was right about his job, she took a painting from her room and put it behind the bread counter (柜台). No artist could fail to notice it. Two days later, the customer came in.
“Two loaves of stalebread, if you please.”
“You have here a fine picture, madam,” he said while she was packing the bread.
“Yes?” said Miss Martha, pleased with her cleverness. “Do you think it is a good picture?”
“The palace,” said the customer, “is not in good drawing. The perspective (透视画法) of it is not true. Goodbye, madam. ”
He took his bread, bowed and hurried out.
Yes, he must be an artist. How gently and kindly his eyes shone behind his glasses! To be able to judge perspective at a quick look and to live on stale bread. But talented people often have to go through difficulties before they succeed.
What a thing it would be for art and perspective if genius were supported by two thousand dollars in the bank, a bakery and a sympathetic heart. But these were daydreams.
Now, when he came, he would often chat for a while with Miss Martha. He kept on buying stale bread, never a cake, never a pie. She thought he began to look thinner and lost heart. She wanted to offer something good to him, but she was afraid of hurting him. She knew the pride (骄傲) of artists. (To be continued)
31.We can put the sentence “Never did he call for anything but stale bread.” in ________

35.From the passage, we can learn Miss Martha was ________

32.根据第5段“To check if she was right about his job, she took a painting from her room and put it behind the bread counter. No artist could fail to notice it.”
33.根据文中多处心理描写(如第4段“She was sure then that he was an artist and very poor.”、第9段“Yes, he must be an artist. How gently and kindly his eyes shone behind his glasses!”、第10段“What a thing it would be for art and perspective if genius were supported by two thousand dollars in the bank, a bakery and a sympathetic heart...”)

Natural disasters (灾害) are a part of our world. They can cause great harm to people and the environment. However, people can do something when natural disasters happen.
Earthquakes happen when the earth’s crust (地壳) moves. They can make buildings fall and hurt many people. In 2008, the Wenchuan earthquake in China brought huge losses. So earthquakes are one of the most serious natural disasters. We should stay away from windows and heavy things when the earthquake happens. If we’re outside, we should stay in an open area.
Floods are also common. Heavy rain can cause floods. These floods can cover large areas of land. They can wash away houses and bridges. When a flood comes, we must move to higher places quickly. We should also prepare some food and water in advance.
Typhoons are strong winds with rain. They often come in summer. Typhoons can blow down trees and destroy houses. We should listen to weather reports and be ready for them. We need to close windows and stay inside when a typhoon is nearby.
In short, natural disasters are always around us. We can’t stop them from happening, but we can learn how to protect ourselves. By knowing what to do in different disasters, we can reduce the damage and stay safe.

40.What can we learn from the passage?

One possible version:
A story of kindness: the help I passed on
Caring for others helps build a warmer community. Last Sunday, I visited elderly neighbours with friends. We helped clean their homes, did some shopping, and spent time chatting, playing chess, and teaching them to use phones. At first, some were shy and refused help, and communicating with hearing-impaired seniors required great patience. Seeing their smiles, I learned small acts of kindness can make a real difference. This meaningful experience encouraged me to keep helping others and pass on kindness whenever I can.

31.We can put the sentence “Never did he call for anything but stale bread.” in ________
A.① B.② C.③ D.④
32.Why did Miss Martha put the painting behind the bread counter?

33.How does the writer mainly develop the story?

B.By showing scenes between two locations.
C.By using long dialogues between characters.

A.Miss Martha would offer the man stale bread for free.

31.We can put the sentence “Never did he call for anything but stale bread.” in ________
A.① B.② C.③ D.④
32.Why did Miss Martha put the painting behind the bread counter?
A.To test if the customer was an artist.
B.To sell the painting to help the poor artist.
C.To show her personal art collection and taste.
D.To decorate the shop and attract more customers.
33.How does the writer mainly develop the story?
A.By describing the setting in great detail.
B.By showing scenes between two locations.
C.By using long dialogues between characters.
D.By exploring Miss Martha’s thoughts and feelings.
34.What might happen later according to the last paragraph of the story?
A.Miss Martha would offer the man stale bread for free.
B.Miss Martha would lend some of her money to the man.
C.Miss Martha would secretly add something to the stale bread.
D.Miss Martha would give him fresh bread instead of stale one.
35.From the passage, we can learn Miss Martha was ________
A.rich but cold-hearted B.kind and warm-hearted
C.clever and proud D.strict with customers

36.What should people do when an earthquake happens?
A.Stay close to windows.
B.Stay under heavy furniture.
C.Stay in an open area if outside.
D.Run as fast as possible.
37.Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a result of floods?
A.Covering large areas of land.
B.Washing away houses and bridges.
C.Blowing down trees.
D.Needing to move to higher places.
38.The underlined word “losses” in Paragraph 2 probably means ________.
A.gains B.damage C.surprises D.development
39.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Natural disasters are very dangerous.
B.We should learn to protect ourselves from natural disasters.
C.Earthquakes, floods and typhoons are common disasters.
D.Natural disasters can’t be stopped.
40.What can we learn from the passage?
A.People can do nothing to deal with natural disasters.
B.Typhoons only happen in winter.
C.We should prepare food and water before a flood comes.
D.All natural disasters are the same.
