George Nakashima always insisted that he was a simple woodworker, refusing to accept the
title of an artist. However, the director of the American Craft Museum called him a national
treasure because major museums exhibited his works, thinking highly of them. For almost fifty
years he simply went on shaping wood into beautiful chairs, tables, and cabinets.
Nakashima had a clear goal.He intended each piece of furniture he made to be as perfect as
possible.Even making a box was an act of creation, because it produced an object that had never
existed before.Initially Nakashima used local wood, sometimes from his own property.Later,he
traveled to seek out English oak,Persian walnut,African zebra wood.He especially liked to find
giant roots that had been dug out of the ground after a tree was taken down.Nakashima felt that
making this wood into furniture was a way of allowing the tree to live again.Nakashima took
pleasure in using wood with interesting knots (and cracks instead of perfect boards. These
irregularities gave the wood personality and showed that the tree had lived a happy life.
He never tailed to oreate an object that was both useful and beautiful. One early piece
Nakashima designed was a three-legged chair for his small daughter Mira to use when she sat at
the table for meals. The Mira chair became so popular that Nakashima later made both low and
high versions.Another famous piece, the Conoid chair, has two legs supported by blade-like feet.
Always,Nakashima's designs were precise and graceful, marked by simplicity that revealed his
love for the wood.
As the years passed,Nakashima's reputation grew and his works received many awards. His
children Mira and Kevin, now adults, joined the team of craftspeople in their father's studio.
Nakashima's dream of combining work and family has come true.
11.Why was Nakashima called a national treasure?
A.Because he loved both his work and family.
B.Because his works showed high artistic value
C.Because the wood materials he used were precious.
D.Because he spent most of his life making furniture.
12.Which of the following best describes Nakashima?
A.Generous and outgoing.
B.Ambitious and friendly.
C.Creative and modest.
D.Honest and simple.
13.Which of the following is true of Mira and Kevin?
A.They had an art studio of their own.
B.They lacked the ability to create art works.
C.They developed different hobbies from their father.
D.They continued their father's woodworking career.

promising discovery:specific bacteria that can dramatically reduce agricultural emissions of
nitrous oxide(N.O),a powerful greenhouse gas.
Nitrous oxide, largely released from farm fields due to nitrogen fertilizer use,is a major
climato concern.According to co-author Professor Lars Bakken of the Norwegian University of
Life Sciences, the gas is 265 times more effective at warming the atmosphere than carbon
dioxide and can remain in the air for over a century.
To develop the solution, researchers used organic waste to grow the bacteria.Building on
past work, they searched for a microorganism that would reduce nitrous oxide emissions without
staying in the soil long so long that it harmed other life forms important for crop health
The bacteria reduced emissions after a second fertilizer treatment by about half two weeks later.
After three months,.the makeup of microbial(微生物的)life was unchanged,.suggesting the
bacteria would not harm the soil.
These bacteria exist naturally in anaerobic digesters(厌氧消化器),which t女ansforms organic
waste into biofuels. That might ease acceptance of their use, said Paul Carini of the University of
Arizona, who was not involved in the research. Moreover,Bakken stared that this "opens up a
number of new possibilities"for managing farmland. The bacteria could be added to fertilizers,
offering a potential direct application for farmers. As Carini noted, using a waste product from
one industrial process to benefit another is cost-effective.
However,'significant challenges remain before widespread use.Professor Lori Hoagland,an
expert in the field, noted that soils vary globally, requiring more field testing to ensure
effectiveness.More critically, farmers carrently get no financial motivation to adopt such
methods.Bakken argued that authorities must reate policies to make emission reductions
profitable. If these limitations can be addressed,
cteral treatment could have a major
impact on reducing agriculture's contribution to climate change.
14.Why is nitrous oxide a major climate concern?
A.It is released in larger amounts than CO2.
B.It stays in the atmosphere for a very short time.
C.It has a much stronger warming effect than CO2.
D.It comes mainly from industrial production.
15.What is mainly discussed about bacteria in paragraph 4?
A.Its potential benefits.
B.Its working principle.
C.Its producing process.
D.Its research value.
16.What prevents the application of the finding?
A.Shortage of necessary bacteria.
B.Lack of financial benefit for farmers.
C.Difficulty in large-scale testing.
D.Uncertainty about its effect.

Have you ever obeyed the suggestions of a digital writing assistant to replace a word or
restructure a sentence? Before the appearance of digital tools, you'd probably have turned to a
dictionary for the same assistance.
Dictionaries enable us to write not with fail-safe convenience but with originality and a
point of view. While AI assistants produce phrases and statements so writers don't have to think
them up,dictionaries provide us with the knowledge to use language ourselves in expressive and
potentially infinite (ways. They place choice and authority literally in human hands,
forcing us to discover how we want to explain ourselves and our ideas to the world.
The abundance of digital writing assistants gives greater urgency to debates about what a
dictionary should be.In 1946,George Orwell described good writing as "picking out words for
the sake of their meaning,"a practice that dictionaries facilitate while digital writing programs
stifle.Writers consulting a dictionary make a choice, while writers guided by an app have their
choices made for them. The digital-mative approach delivers hands-oft,derivative(衍生的)
communication. The other requires flipping through pages without knowing exactly where you'll
end up.Without dictionaries to provide us with a guide to English's potential, writing that way is
nearly impossible.
Our ability to express ourselves is critical-it helps us define who we are.Dictionaries aid
as m achieving this:They classify our unique ways of thinking through language.I'm a Canadian;
ny feeling of pride in my country is enhanced because of small Canadian words such as "eaves
rough"or"serviette",which are well-documented in dictionaries but rarely used by AI chatbots,
or the most part.
As digital writing extends deeper into our lives and minds,we need dictionaries more than
ever.Abandoning dictionaries and embracing mechanized writing would weaken our ability for
collective identity quite as much as the ability to express ourselves.
17.What might be a distinot feature of dictionaries according to the author?
A.They promise error-free phrases.
B.They possess academic authority
C.They provide reauy-tnade expressions.D.They facilitate creative writing.
18.What does the underlined word stifle"in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Favor.
B.Revise.
C.Observe.
D.Discourago.
9.Why does the author mention“eaves trough”and“serviette”in paragraph4?
A.To illustrate how language use affects identity.
B.To indicate the weakness of dictionaries.
C.To celebrate the divensity of Canadian English.
D.To show how Al aids us in expressing.
:0.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.What to Expect from Dictionaries?
B.How to Deal with Digital Writing?
C.Why Keep Your Dictionary?
D.Who Uses Writing Assistants?

In today's world of digital distractions, the thought of taking your kids to an art gallery
might seem a thankless and impossible challenge.Surely a child won't have the
patience to stare at something for long.21.
Being exposed to art, however, holds profound significance for the development of
young minds,both intellectually and emotionally.22.Each painting,sculpture,or
photograph in art galleries tells a story, inviting young viewers to interpret and connect with it on
a personal level. But with many kids being extremely picky eaters, and galleties seeming as
appetizing as yesterday's porridge, how can we get them to fuck (in?I firmly
believe art galleries can be great fun if we set out with the intenton of making them so.
First, why not let your children enjoy art on their own terms?Wbo said that walking around
a gallery had to be slow, stopping to look at every picture?4.If they want to head
straight for a certain display, let them.If something catches their eye on the other side of the
room,that's absolutely fine.
25.What really matters in a gallery is that children build a connection with art,for
whatever reason. To encourage this, you can make it into a game, either with or without a reward,
with simple questions like,"Who can guess the artist?"I did this many times with my children
and always found it to enhance their interest.
A.Let them determine the pace
B.Make the art gallery fit in with your kids
C.Turning art into a game is another trick
D.The answer is to approach them with fresh eyes
E.It is a crying shame that they are least-visited attractions
F.It allows children opportunities to engage in diverse perspectives and cultures
G.It's understandable to think of art galleries as anything but child-friendly places

The final whistle blew and the basketball game was over. The Hawks won again,Abby
shouted,leaping from the bench and cheering loudly.Thirteen games,thirteen wins-the
best record the team had ever had.But Abby hadn't made much of a contribution. Her
playing time totaled only about ten minutes for the entire season. As she walked toward
Coach McKenzie and her teammates, she overheard someone saying under their breath that
she was basically a cheerleader in a basketball uniform. Her heart sank and tears filled her
eyes.
Coach McKenzie praised the whole team and especially mentioned Kathy for her excellent
free throws ()Thinking of the countless hours she had spent practicing shots after
school,Abby felt like shouting,"I can shoot well too-if I could just get a chance to play!"
That evening,Mom drove Abby home silently. She always knew when it was best to
say nothing. After finishing homework,Abby grabbed her basketball and rushed outside to
practice.Mom walked up behind her.Abby sighed, murmuring that she knew she should be
satisfied just to be on the team, and launched a jump shot."Not this time,Abby,"Mom
replied, passing the ball back."I just want to say that I'm proud of you for keeping on trying,
and I believe your chance will come."
The last game of the season came, and the gym was full of people. The crowd cheered
loudly as the second half began.Abby watched closely as the players ran up and down the court.
The score was very close, and the Hawks were one point behind with only ten minutes
left."come on,Hawks,"Abby breathed.Suddenly,Kathy,the star player,took the ball but fell
heavily and got injured when another player ran into her.She couldn't continue,so the judge
approached the coach and told Coach McKenzie that someone had to take Kathy's place and
shoot the two free throws.Coach scanned her reserves(预备队员).Her eyes landed on Abby,,the
girl who always stayed late to practice.
