① Classics are the gems (宝石) of the literary (文学的) world. For years, people have read them to learn more. But now, more people love “watching” these classics in videos. According to a survey reported by the most popular Chinese short-video platform, the views for book-related videos jumped by 65.17 per cent year-on-year.
② A number of people get what they want by “watching” classics.
③ “There are some classics that I am not interested in but need to read,” said 14-year-old He Liyan from Jiangsu. “So I usually watch a video about the book to find out some interesting stories which can keep me reading.” Some people also find classic books are really long and hard to understand, so they go to vloggers’ explanations.
④ “The vloggers also add personal opinions to their explanations, making the books easier to understand,” added He.
⑤ A Dream of Red Mansions is famous for showing Chinese society with interesting characters and a poetic writing style. It talks about family, society and human nature. These things can be fun to watch but boring and difficult to read. So it will take a long time.
⑥ “There are so many characters in the novel, which make me confused a lot,” said 12-year-old Shao Xinyao from Hubei. “The mind maps shown in the videos make their relationships clear and quick.”
⑦ While reading with videos helps many people, some express different opinions and worries.
⑧ For Zhang Boren, a 13-year-old from Beijing, reading is a journey about forming a personal relationship with the text, not just learning information. “Books can let me imagine. Although videos can help a lot, they can’t show every part of a well-made story,” he said.
⑨ 18-year-old Wang Hongjie from Sichuan agreed, saying, “It may weaken readers’ ability to read independently and think deeply.”

④ Mind maps in videos help readers know how different characters are connected.
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④
32. What can we infer about Zhang Boren’s view on watching classics?
A. He believes videos are useless for understanding classics.
B. He thinks videos reduce readers’ ability to understand the book.
C. He thinks the videos help to form a personal connection with books.
D. He believes books are better than videos for developing imagination.

Imagine a clock that never makes a mistake, even after billions of years. This is not a dream, but a real invention called the strontium optical (锶光学) clock. It is one of the most precise (精准的) clocks in the world. Scientists are very excited about it because it can measure time more accurately than any ordinary clock.
Normal clocks are fine for daily life, but they are not perfect. Even the best ones can get off by a second after a long time. For scientists, even a tiny mistake matters a lot. That is why they work hard to make clocks that are more exact and reliable.
This special clock works in a very different way. Unlike regular clocks that have moving parts, it uses light from strontium atoms (锶原子) to keep track of time. ________ These atoms move in a very regular way, like tiny dancers, swinging back and forth constantly. Their movement is stable, making the clock very correct. If this clock had started running at the beginning of the universe, it would still be nearly perfect today.
Because it is so exact, this clock can help scientists do many important things. It can improve GPS, making navigation and maps more correct. It can also help scientists study how time changes in different places, which is related to Einstein’s theory about time and space.
In March 2026, Professor Pan Jianwei and his team at the University of Science and Technology of China improved their strontium clock so it only makes 1 second of error in 300 billion years. This achievement put China among the top countries in the world for this technology. It was even used to help control international time. In the future, these clocks may be sent into space. By comparing time in different places, they could show new secrets about space. A small clock like this could help humans answer big questions about how the world works.
Time is something we use every day without thinking. However, this amazing clock shows it can be measured in an amazing, almost magical way. It reminds us that even something ordinary like a clock can help us explore space.
33. What makes the strontium optical clock different from ordinary clocks?
A. It uses moving parts to measure time. B. It can get off by a second over time.
C. It uses light from strontium atoms. D. It is mainly used for our daily life.
34. Which sentence can probably be put in the “________”?
A. This makes it different from ordinary clocks.
B. Scientists prefer regular clocks for daily life.
C. Strontium atoms are found deep inside the earth.
D. The light helps the clock keep time accurately.
35. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Common things may have greater scientific value than we think.
B. Magical inventions can change people’s daily lives.
C. Space exploration fully depends on new clock technology.
D. Ordinary tools can limit human’s scientific discovery.
36. Which of the following best shows the structure of this passage?
A. Introduction→Working way→New progress and future→Uses→Conclusion
B. Introduction→Working way and Uses→New progress and future→Conclusion
C. Introduction→Uses→Working way→New progress and future→Conclusion
D. Introduction→New progress and future→Working way and Uses→Conclusion
D
The sun shone through the high windows of the school hall, but the air inside felt heavy. Everyone was there for the final day of the Science Fair. They were waiting to see Mr. Harris, the headmaster, punish Leo, the boy everyone believed had broken the school’s most expensive telescope (望远镜).
Sam sat in the back, his heart beating like a trapped bird. He looked at Leo. The quiet boy looked sad and helpless. Then Sam’s eyes moved to Brad, the leader of the football team, who stood near the front. Brad’s face was calm, but he had warned Sam earlier, “Keep your mouth shut.”
Sam knew the truth. He had seen Brad knock the telescope over by accident while playing with a football indoors. But Brad was a boy everyone feared to go against. Staying silent was safe. Speaking up meant trouble.
“Leo, do you have anything to say?” Mr. Harris asked strictly.
Sam stood up. He remembered the nights he couldn’t sleep, feeling guilty about Leo being punished for something he didn’t do. He thought of what his grandfather always said. A hero wasn’t someone who was never scared; a hero was someone who did the right thing even when they were shaking.
He moved forward. The hall grew quiet.
“Sam?” Mr. Harris asked. “Do you have something to share?”
Sam’s voice shook at first. “I… I was in the hall yesterday evening.”
Everyone whispered in surprise. Sam looked directly at Mr. Harris instead of looking at Brad’s angry eyes. He almost stopped, but then he saw Leo’s sad face. He knew he must help the boy who did nothing wrong.
“I saw it all,” Sam said, his voice becoming stronger. “Leo didn’t do it. He was just cleaning up the pieces. It was Brad who hit it with his football!”
Suddenly, Brad’s face turned red, and he looked down at his shoes.
Sam was still a little scared of Brad, but for the first time in days, the heavy weight on his chest disappeared.
Sometimes, a single voice in a quiet room is enough to change everything.
37. Why did Sam keep quiet at first?
A. Because he was afraid of Brad.
B. Because he wanted to protect the telescope.
C. Because he didn’t see what happened yesterday.
D. Because he was busy preparing for the Science Fair.
38. Why did Sam’s voice change from “shaking” to “becoming stronger”?
A. Because he stopped looking at Brad’s angry eyes.
B. Because the whispers in the hall gave him courage.
C. Because he wanted to show his grandfather he was a hero.
D. Because he felt he must help the boy who did nothing wrong.
39. What does underlined phrase “the heavy weight on his chest” stand for?
A. The fear of playing football indoors.
B. The worry of being punished for breaking the telescope.
C. The guilty feeling of letting an innocent person get punished.
D. The tiredness from preparing for the school Science Fair.
40. What does the last sentence “Sometimes, a single voice in a quiet room is enough to change everything.” mean?
A. Being a hero means you are never afraid of anything.
B. One person’s courage can help others and make things right.
C. It is important to speak loudly when a room is very quiet.
D. Only teachers can change the rules in a school.

rewarded意为“获得回报、得到嘉奖”,呼应前文“you will harvest what you plant”;encouraged“受到鼓励”、educated“受教育”、comforted“得到安慰” 不符耕耘收获的核心主旨。

29. Why does 14-year-old He Liyan watch videos about classic books?
A. Because she finds classic books too short and easy to finish.
B. Because she thinks videos can take the place of all traditional reading.
C. Because she prefers vloggers’ personal opinions over the original texts.
D. Because she hopes the videos help her read uninteresting but necessary books.
30. Which picture can show the meaning of the underlined word “confused” in para 6?
A. B. C. D.
31. Why do people prefer classics videos according to the passage?
① Readers have trouble getting through some long and difficult classic books.

③ Explanations with vloggers’ own ideas make classic books much easier to follow.
D 30. A 31. C 32. D
原文第三段He Liyan提到“There are some classics that I am not interested in but need to read…watch a video about the book to find out some interesting stories which can keep me reading.”,说明她看名著短视频是希望视频能帮助自己读完不感兴趣但必须读的书。
①原文第三段“Some people also find classic books are really long and hard to understand”对应读者难以读完冗长难懂的名著,正确; ②文中仅说相关视频播放量大幅上涨,并未说明看视频是人们欣赏名著的主要方式,错误; ④第六段“The mind maps shown in the videos make their relationships clear”对应思维导图理清人物关联,正确; ③第四段“The vloggers also add personal opinions to their explanations, making the books easier to understand”对应博主带个人观点的讲解更容易看懂,正确; 综上①③④正确。
第八段Zhang Boren提出“Books can let me imagine. Although videos can help a lot, they can’t show every part of a well-made story”,能推断出他认为书籍比短视频更能培养想象力。
C
C 34. D 35. A 36. B

A 38. D 39. C 40. B
根据文章第二段Brad警告Sam“Keep your mouth shut”以及第三段“But Brad was a boy everyone feared to go against. Staying silent was safe.”
根据文章第九段“He almost stopped, but then he saw Leo’s sad face. He knew he must help the boy who did nothing wrong.”
根据文章第五段Sam因为Leo替罪而失眠,“feeling guilty about Leo being punished for something he didn’t do”,以及第十二段说完真相后“the heavy weight on his chest disappeared”。

Cai Gao was born in 1946 in Changsha, Hunan province. She grew up in a warm and caring environment. Her family encouraged her interest in art from an early age.
