Santiago was an old fisherman. For eighty-four days, he had not caught a single fish. People in the village said he was unlucky, but he remained hopeful.
Early one morning, Santiago sailed his small boat far out into the deep sea. He believed the big fish were there. Finally, he felt a strong pull on his fishing line. A huge marlin (枪鱼), much larger than his boat, had taken the bait (鱼饵). The fish was powerful and began to pull the boat further out to sea.
The struggle lasted for two days and two nights. Santiago’s hands were cut and aching, but he did not let go of the line. He admired the fish’s strength and courage, calling it his brother. He knew he must catch it, not just for food, but to show he could still be a fisherman.
On the third morning, tired but determined, Santiago finally pulled the marlin close enough to catch it. He tied the giant fish to the side of his boat and set sail for home, proud of his hard-won prize.
However, his trouble was not over. The blood from the marlin attracted sharks. Santiago fought with them bravely. But it was useless. By the time he reached the small harbor (码头) at night, only the skeleton (骨架) of the great fish remained.
He hadn’t closed his eyes for days. Exhausted, Santiago carried his mast and walked to his small house to sleep. The other fishermen saw the huge skeleton and were amazed. They finally understood the old man’s great struggle.

Volunteering is a wonderful way to give back to the community and help those in need. It can also help us develop new skills, make new friends and gain valuable experience. I have been a volunteer for two years and I have learned a lot from it.
Last year, I volunteered at a children’s hospital. I went there every Saturday morning. I played games with the sick children, read stories to them and helped them with their homework. At first, I was a little nervous because I didn’t know how to talk to sick children. But soon I found that they were very lovely and friendly. They always smiled at me and thanked me for my help. When I saw their bright smiles, I felt very happy. I knew that I was doing something meaningful.
This year, I started volunteering at an old people’s home. I go there every Sunday afternoon. I talk to the old people, listen to their stories and help them do some housework. Some of the old people live alone and they are very lonely. They are very happy to see me and they always tell me many interesting stories about their past. I also sing songs and play the erhu for them. They clap their hands and join me in singing. It makes me feel very warm.
Volunteering has taught me to be kinder and more patient. It has also made me realize how lucky I am. I have a happy family, a good education and a healthy body. I should cherish what I have and help those who are in trouble. Volunteering has also helped me improve my communication skills and teamwork skills. When I work with other volunteers, we learn to help each other and work together.
I think everyone should take part in volunteering activities. It doesn’t matter how much time you spend or what you do. Even a small act of kindness can make a big difference. Volunteering is not only about giving, but also about receiving. It can make us happier and more meaningful.

六、任务型阅读(10分)
阅读短文,用英文填空或回答问题(请注意每小题的词数要求)。
Last Saturday, I joined the city park volunteer team with my classmates. The sun was shining brightly, and we arrived at Green Lake Park early in the morning, excited to help. A park worker welcomed us and gave us tasks: some would clean the paths, some guide visitors, and my group was asked to collect litter near the lake.
Wearing red volunteer hats, we started working. At first, I saw a plastic (塑料) bottle stuck in the plants. It was hard to reach, but I carefully pulled it out. My friend Li Hua found a bag of snacks left on a bench and threw it into the correct trash bin. After working for several hours, we were tired but happy.
Stopping bad habits is also one of our activities. As we worked, we noticed some kids trying to feed the ducks with bread. We walked over gently and told them, “Ducks can get sick from too much bread. Let’s protect them together!” The kids nodded and said sorry, which made us feel proud.
By noon, the park looked cleaner, and the sky seemed bluer. We sat on the grass, smiling happily. I realized small actions can make a big difference. Being a volunteer isn’t just about working; it’s about caring for others and our environment.
This experience taught me that giving is receiving. I hope more people will join us, making our city parks not only beautiful but also full of love and warmth.

【答案】
Dear Jim,
I heard you will come to China and worry about not knowing Chinese customs. I’d like to share some with you.
In China, people usually shake hands when meeting for the first time. When greeting elders, we often use respectful titles like “Grandpa” or “Aunt”. At meals, it’s polite to let older people start eating first. These customs not only show respect but also help build harmonious relationships. My advice is to observe locals’ behavior first. If unsure, ask politely—most people will be glad to help.
I hope you’ll have a great time in China.
Yours,
Li Hua
