Many cities have their own cultural symbols. It could be a place, a person or a work of literature. For Beijing, the writer Lao She and his play Teahouse show the amazing culture of this ancient city. The story takes place in one scene, the Yu Tai Teahouse, from the late Qing Dynasty to the 1940s.
The play includes more than 60 interesting characters from all walks of life. Through them, the readers get to see how modern Chinese society changes. The most important character is Wang Lifa, manager of the teahouse. He gets along well with people and keeps the teahouse running in the changing times. However, life turns too difficult and Wang chooses to end his life.
Besides, Master Chang, a regular visitor, and Qin Zhongyi, landlord of the teahouse, are also quite important in the story. Master Chang is a Manchu. He shows great care for others. He even helps out Wang Lifa when he has to make a living by selling vegetables. As for Qin Zhongyi, he dreams of building a better nation by opening factories and banks. In the end, his dream fails.
The play came out in the 1950s and it is still popular both at home and abroad. Today, Teahouse is not only one of Laoshe’s best works, but also a treasure in the history of modern Chinese dramas.
