Scientists at the University of Birmingham in the U.K. found that increased consumption of flavonols (黄酮醇类) allowed its male participants to more efficiently complete cognitive tasks. Flavonols are molecules naturally found in fruit, vegetables and cocoa (可可粉).
Researchers giving a cocoa drink to a select group of participants and a non-cocoa drink to another for a study found flavonol produced a faster and greater increase in blood oxygenation (氧化) levels. The study consisting of 18 healthy male participants aged between 18 and 40 led to the discovery that participants who drank the cocoa completed cognitive (认知的) tasks some 11% faster than the other group.
In the news released by the university, the study’s author Dr. Catarina Rendeiro said: “It is the first time the cognitive effects of flavonols in young, healthy subjects and the link with brain blood oxygenation have been investigated.”
“Our results showed a clear benefit for the participants taking the flavanol-enriched drink, but only when the task became sufficiently complicated,” she explained. “We can link this with our results on improved blood oxygenation. If you’re being challenged more, your brain needs improved blood oxygen levels to manage that challenge. It also further suggests that flavonols might be particularly beneficial during cognitively demanding tasks.”
“By better understanding the cognitive benefits of eating these food groups, as well as the wider cardiovascular benefits, we can offer improved guidance to people about how to make the most of their dietary choices,” the doctor added.
The study, published in Scientific Reports, was funded by a Birmingham-Illinois Bridge Seed Grant, and by the National Institute of Aging in the U.S.
Also worthy of note is that some participants of the study saw no benefit from consuming the flavanol-enriched drink. It’s believed that they likely already had high blood oxygenation levels.
8.What did the researchers discover?
A.The function of flavonols. B.The flavors of cocoa.
C.People’s cognitive levels. D.Our blood oxygenation levels.
9.What did Dr. Catarina’s words in paragraphs 3 and 4 stress?
A.The result of doing cognitive tasks.
B.The meaning of the research.
C.The ways of completing the research.
D.The need to improve men’s cognition.
10.What can the findings be used to do?
A.Make a diet plan. B.Cure many patients.
C.Improve girls’ study. D.Solve an easy problem.
11.What can we know about flavonols?
A.They are suitable for children and adults.
B.Scientists won’t study them any more.
C.People should consume them as much as possible.
D.They are good for people to keep their minds sharp.
【答案】8.A 9.B 10.A 11.D

Use food to ease your moods? The time of meals may have an impact on moods, including levels of depression and anxiety, according to researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
To conduct the study, 19 participants (12 men and 7 women) were arranged to experience a Forced Process in a dark room for four 28-hour “days”. Participants were assigned to one of two meal timing groups: the Daytime and Nighttime Meal Control Group, which had meals according to a 28-hour cycle (resulting in eating both during the night and day, which is typical among night workers), and the Daytime Only Meal Group, which had meals on a 24-hour cycle (resulting in eating only during the day). The team then assessed depression and anxiety like mood levels every hour.
The result showed that meal timing significantly affected the participants’ mood levels. During the simulated (模拟的) night shift (day 4), those in the Daytime and Nighttime Meal Control Group had increased depression and anxiety like mood levels, compared to the baseline(day 1). In contrast, there were no changes in mood in the Daytime Only Meal Group. Participants with a greater degree of circadian(昼夜节律的) disorder experienced more depression and anxiety like moods.
Researchers discovered that among individuals in the daytime and nighttime eating groups, anxiety and depression rose by 16% and 26% individually. A famous author Sarah Chellappa, who completed work on this project, said, “Meal timing is emerging as an important aspect of nutrition that may influence physical health, but the causal role of the timing of food intake in affecting mental health remains to be tested. Future studies are required to establish if changes in meal timing can lead individuals to experience anxiety-related disorders.”
The findings open the door for studying a behavioral strategy that might benefit individuals suffering from mental health disorders, such as shift workers. The study also adds to a growing body of evidence finding that strategies that improve sleep and circadian patterns may help promote mental health.
12.How is the study carried out according to the text?
A.By presenting cause and effect.
B.By examining the participants’ eating habits.
C.By recording the eating time in various groups.
D.By comparing data from two different groups.
13.Which of the following will the researchers probably agree with?
A.Daytime eating might benefit mental health.
B.It’s unavoidable for people to eat at the wrong time.
C.Nighttime meal is harmful and should be prohibited.
D.It’s necessary to keep track of our mood levels each day.
14.What does the follow-up test aim to find out according to Sarah Chellappa?
A.How food intake affects human’s moods.
B.Whether changes in meal timing cause emotional problems.
C.Whether food nutrition is related to mental health.
D.Why shift workers suffer from mental health disorders.
15.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Meal Timing Reduces Pressure B.Meal Timing May Affect Moods
C.Mood Disorders Result in Anxiety D.Good Strategies Benefit Our Health
【答案】12.D 13.A 14.B 15.B
根据第二段中的 “To conduct the study, 19 participants (12 men and 7 women) were arranged to experience a Forced Process in a dark room for four 28-hour ‘days’. (为了进行这项研究,19名参与者(12名男性和7名女性)被安排在黑暗的房间里经历四个28小时的强迫过程。)” 和第三段中的 “During the simulated (模拟的) night shift (day 4), those in the Daytime and Nighttime Meal Control Group had increased depression and anxiety like mood levels, compared to the baseline(day 1).(在模拟夜班(第4天)期间,与基线(第1天)相比,日间和夜间膳食对照组的抑郁和焦虑样情绪水平增加。)”
根据第三段“In contrast, there were no changes in mood in the Daytime Only Meal Group. Participants with a greater degree of circadian(昼夜节律的) disorder experienced more depression and anxiety like moods.(相比之下,仅限日间用餐组的情绪没有变化。昼夜节律紊乱程度较高的参与者经历了更多的抑郁和焦虑样情绪。)”可知,就餐时间对人的情绪有很大影响,“只在白天吃饭的一组”的(组员)情绪没有变化;昼夜节律紊乱程度高的人可能会产生更多的抑郁和焦虑情绪。由此可知,白天就餐也许有益于身心健康。故选A项。
由第四段中的 “Future studies are required to establish if changes in meal timing can lead individuals to experience anxiety-related disorders.(未来的研究需要确定用餐时间的变化是否会导致个体出现焦虑相关障碍。)

故填①had made;②would change。
35.By the time Henry was 12 years old, he (collect) more than a thousand stamps.
By the time Henry was 12 years old可知,空处谓语动词应用过去完成时had collected,表示过去某一时间前就已经发生或完成了的动作,对过去的某一点造成的某种影响或是结果。
When it comes to pork 36 (consume), China leads the world. It is estimated that an average Chinese person consumes 40 kilograms of pork per year. Dongpo Pork is named after Su Dongpo, an 39 (influence) poet, writer, artist, and statesman who lived during the Song Dynasty. As the story goes, one day Su was having some pork 41 (cook) on the stove when an old friend visited him and had a sudden urge 42 (challenge) him to a game of Chinese chess. As the game consumed his focus, Su lost track of time and ultimately overcooked his pork to the point 43 it gave off a good smell as it began to burn, thus creating this special dish. The special dish, which his friends named after Su Dongpo, was rich in taste, deep red color, tender and crispy, but not burnt.
Su made this dish when he served as 44 official in Hangzhou which is the heartland of the country’s gastronomy. Many people are fond 45 the dish and it can be found in many restaurants across Hangzhou. For instance, at the Hyatt Regency Hangzhou, their signature dish (招牌菜) is Dongpo Pork.
36.consumption 37.meals 38.was made 39.influential 40.inventing 41.cooked 42.to challenge 43.where 44.an 45.of
meal此处意为“一餐饭”,为可数名词,根据下文“is one of the most popular dishes among them”提示可知,此处用复数形式meals,Chinese meals意为“中餐”。故填meals。
故填was made。

此处为非谓语动词作后置定语,修饰名词urge,根据an urge to do sth. 故填to challenge。
故填where。
故填an。
此处为固定搭配be fond of意为“喜欢”,应用介词of。故填of。
