It was November 1741, and the Russian science ship St. Peter was lost at sea between Siberia and Alaska. Hit by storms, the St. Peter moved where it could. All the sailors were too ill to control it.
Then on November 4, the men found the land! At first, they hoped that they’d come back to Kamchatka, from which they’d set out about five months earlier. Instead, as they got close to the beach, they found themselves on an island without trees or humans. And it was the beginning of a dangerous fight. Whether the men could live depended on an animal unknown to science.
All around the island, moving in and out with water, were large black animals. The ship’s naturalist, Georg Wilhelm Steller, had read about manatees, or “sea cows”, that lived south in the tropics (热带地区).The sea cows here, however, were much larger. Reaching up to 23 feet long and weighing about 24,000pounds, they were the size of small whales.
The sea cows lived in groups, the adults creating protective circles around the young. They used their two short flippers (鳍) to move along the rocks under water. Seagulls stayed and ate something on their backs. Every few minutes the sea cows lifted their heads from the water to breathe.
The researchers are thought to be the first Europeans to see the coast of Alaska. They lived for months on almost nothing but hard biscuits and water. On the island, the weakened men ate only what they could find, such as dead fish washed onto the beach. Many men died because of being short of food.

Does your class use email? Have you ever tried to write a story for the school newspaper and send it in by email? Email is used for everything, and it makes life easier. But do you know who invented it?
The man who invented email was Ray Tomlinson, a US engineer. He sadly passed away in 2016 at the age of 74. Back in 1971, Tomlinson was working on a way to send messages from one computer to another. He needed a symbol to separate users’ names from their computers’ names. The “@” sign was not commonly used and was on all keyboards, making it the perfect choice.
Tomlinson said, “The ‘@’ sign made the most sense. It showed where the user was... at.” For example, “Alex@schoolnewssite” would reach Alex at the school newspaper’s website. This was the early form of email.
Interestingly, Tomlinson didn’t remember the first message he sent. It was probably something simple like “QWERTYUIOP”, the first row of letters on a keyboard.
Today, the “@” sign is also used in many places in addition to email. Social media like Weibo and WeChat use it at the beginning of users’ names. So, even if we don’t use email someday, Tomlinson’s invention will still be with us. He not only changed the way we communicate (交流) but also saved the “@” sign for new uses.
In short, Tomlinson’s invention has had a huge influence on our communication. It has made it possible for people around the world to send messages quickly and easily. Email has become an important tool for both personal and business communication. So, the next time you send an email, thank Ray Tomlinson for his brilliant (卓越的) ideas.

To School, by Bike or on Foot? There are two popular ways to go to school: by bike or on foot. After hearing Tom and Amy’s ideas, I prefer walking to school.
Just like Amy says, walking is safe—there’s no need to worry about traffic accidents. What’s more, I can enjoy the beautiful scenery on the way: smell the flowers in spring and hear birds sing. Also, the slow pace lets me plan my school day calmly, which makes me more focused in classes.
