Passage 17
Have you ever wondered if astronauts can enjoy grilled (烤的) food in space, or how they cook in a weightless environment? It is known to all that astronauts usually eat freeze-dried meals, but things have changed with a new invention. Six astronauts from Shenzhou XX and Shenzhou XXI successfully grilled chicken wings and beef in Tiangong Space Station. This marks the first real cooking experience in space for the spacemen.
________ First, hot air doesn’t rise in space like it does on our planet. This causes food to cook very slowly. Second, tiny particles (粒子) of oil and smoke spread everywhere in the spaceship. These particles are dangerous and bad for the astronauts’ health.
Luckily, Chinese engineers created a smart oven to fix these problems. This oven has a small fan to move hot air around. A closed system (系统) is added to it to catch smoke and oil. This can keep the inside of the spaceship clean and safe. This special oven makes it possible for astronauts to enjoy delicious fresh-made food including cakes.
In a video from the station about 400 km above Earth, an astronaut put the chicken wings on a special plate. They were cooked in the oven at 180°C for 28 minutes. When the hot wings came out of the oven, the aroma got all astronauts to gather together and try them. They said they loved the wonderful smell and taste.
This smart invention not only improves the astronauts’ life in space but also shows China’s great progress in space technology. Clearly, people’s love for delicious food can go far beyond the Earth!

Passage 18
English lessons at a Shanghai middle school have transformed into learning adventures. Instead of traditional textbooks and blackboards, students use virtual (虚拟的) reality (VR) technology and have interactive conversations with an AI character to explore language and culture.
In one lesson, learners meet “Hannah”, a virtual French teenager worried about a New Year’s Eve dinner in China—she doesn’t know local traditions or basic rules. Their main task is to talk to her in English: offer useful advice, share cultural tips, and help her deal with “culture shock”. As they interact, students naturally practice conversational sentences while learning about Chinese customs.
The high-tech experience doesn’t stop here. The classroom has VR headsets that take students to vivid, simulated (仿真的) environments. When they put on the devices, they feel like stepping into a busy international food festival, surrounded by food stalls. They can observe foods closely, listen to native speakers’ introductions, and “interact” with virtual sellers which makes vocabulary memorization far easier than repetition.
“This isn’t just about memorizing textbook words,” said an English teacher. “It’s about using language in real-life situations. Students are more interested because they’re truly helping someone and exploring the world firsthand, not just taking in information inactively.”
This creative use of technology shows how AI and VR can create powerful and fun learning experiences. It helps students practice English conversation naturally, build cultural understanding, and makes the classroom a gateway to the wider world.

The mascots are designed from Chinese white dolphins. These are rare animals that live in the Pearl River Estuary (珠江口) near the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. Passage 20
Guangdong, a province in southern China, is known for its rich cultural traditions. However, a recent survey showed that over 40% of young people in Guangdong know little about their local cultural heritage (遗产). This worrying situation has caught the attention of cultural experts and educators.
________ For example, Cantonese opera, with its history of over 300 years, was once very popular. But now, fewer young people are learning this art form. The same is true for other traditions like paper-cutting, lion dance, and Guangdong embroidery (刺绣).
To solve this problem, schools in Guangdong have started using multi-modal approaches (多模态方法) to teach traditional culture. Students don’t just read about these traditions— they experience them through videos, virtual reality, and hands-on activities. In one Guangzhou middle school, students created a digital museum of Cantonese opera. They recorded performances, interviewed artists, and made 3D models of traditional costumes.
This approach combines different subjects. In history classes, students learn about the development of these traditions. In art classes, they practice traditional skills like paper-cutting. Even in science classes, they explore the chemistry behind traditional dyeing techniques used in Guangdong embroidery.
The results have been encouraging. According to a recent report, students’ interest in traditional culture has increased by 35% since these methods were introduced. “I used to think Cantonese opera was boring,” says Li Ming, a 14-year-old student. “But after trying the VR experience and making my own digital opera character, I find it fascinating.”

Passage 15
During a school picnic, Tom Sawyer and his friend Becky Thatcher explored a large cave near their town. They walked and played happily, looking at the strange shapes on the walls. They didn’t notice how far they had gone. Soon, they were alone in the dark, silent tunnels. Becky started to worry. “Tom, I think we are lost!” she cried.
Tom tried to stay calm. He had a long kite string (绳子) in his pocket. He tied one end to a rock. “We can use this to find our way back,” he said. They walked on, with Tom letting out the string. But after many turns, they still saw no exit. Their last candle burned out. They were now in complete darkness. Becky was very frightened and cried. Tom held her hand tightly.
They were tired and hungry. The only food they had was a small piece of cake, which they shared. Tom knew they must keep moving. He told Becky to wait while he explored with the string. In another tunnel, he saw a tiny light far away. He ran back to Becky, shouting, “We are saved! I saw daylight!”
Tom led Becky towards the light. It was a small hole in the cave wall. They climbed out and found themselves near the river. Some men from the town were searching for them. They were safe at last.

Cultural experts think that mixing tradition with modern technology is the key to protecting our culture. As Dr. Chen, a cultural researcher, notes, “We’ re not changing the traditions— we’ re finding new ways to make them meaningful to young people.”
