Although Xiezhao Yutong’s bedroom is only around ten square metres, it is filled with his collections, including ancient books, copper coins and pottery (陶瓷). The only space left is his bed. He said, “My bed is for resting my body, while everything else in this room is for my spirit.” He spent almost all his lucky money and saved pocket money on these items. At first, he collected them just because the cultural relics (文物) looked nice. But as his historical knowledge grew, he began to explore the special stories behind each piece. Whenever he talks about the stories behind these relics, he can talk a lot and people are always surprised by how much he knows.
▲ He got into reading when he was 3 or 4 years old. At the age of 6, a trip to a museum with his mother made him fall in love with cultural relics and history. On holidays, his parents often took him to visit museums. He also likes watching documentaries (纪录片) and he reads books like A Comprehensive History of China and Stories of the Ming Dynasty from a young age. In a hospital in Langfang, Hebei Province, Wang Ming looks at the phone beside his table. He cannot move to pick it up. For patients like Wang Ming, a new technology called Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) (脑机接口) offers a light of hope.
BCI is a new technology that can help people who have lost the ability to move their bodies. It acts as a bridge between the brain and a computer. When a person wants to move, their brain sends out a signal (信号). The BCI reads the signal and sends it to a machine, such as a robotic hand. In this way, the person can control the machine just by thinking.
China is making rapid progress in this field. Chinese scientists have developed very small BCI devices (设备). Some of them can even be placed inside the brain. These devices can read brain signals correctly and quickly. The progress brings new hope to many patients.
This technology offers great hope to patients and their family. Many sick people have lost control of their arms and legs. They hope BCI can help them perform simple tasks. For example, they want to drink water or use a phone by themselves with the help of BCI. Even a small improvement can make a big difference in their lives.
However, there are still many challenges. Patients must go through strict checking before surgery (外科手术), as the surgery may bring some risks. Also, not every patient is appropriate for the technology. Doctors need to choose the right patients carefully. The high cost is another big problem for many families.
The future of BCI remains bright. Scientists are working to improve it further. They hope it will help with more difficult actions one day, such as speaking. With continued efforts, this technology may help more people in the years to come.
