Little George lived in a poor village. One summer day George’s mother sent him to the field to pick up some dried wood for fire.
George looked very hard. By the time the sun was high, he was very hot and wished for a cool place to rest and have some food. As he walked along, he found some fine, wild strawberries.
“How good these will be with my bread and butter,” thought George. He picked up all of the strawberries. As he was lifting the first strawberry to his mouth, he remembered his sick mother, alone in her dark, cold room in the village.
With this in mind, he put the strawberry back again. “Shall I save them for her?” he asked himself.
He thought how happy she would be to see it, yet was still looking at them with a longing eye.
“I will eat half, and take the other half to her,” he said. He divided them into two heaps (堆) , but each heap looked so small. He put them together again.
“I will only eat one,” he thought.
But, as he again lifted it to his mouth, he found that he had taken the finest, so he put it back.
When the sun was beginning to set down, George set out for home. How happy he felt, then, that he had all his strawberries for his sick mother.
He heard his mother’s weak voice calling him. “Is that you, George? I am glad you have come back. I am thirsty, and I am longing for some tea.”

What makes organized sports fun for kids? A team led by Amanda J. Visek did some studies on it. Visek says that lots of kids give up playing organized sports around age 13 because they think the sports aren’t fun anymore. She thinks if she can find out what makes organized sports fun, she can help more kids develop lifelong exercise habits.
First, Visek’s team listed 81 things (called “fun determinants (决定因素) ”) that make organized sports fun by working with over 200 players, coaches and parents. Then they asked some players (aged 8 to 18) to rate (评定) how important each determinant was to their enjoyment of playing organized sports.
The ranking (排名) was surprising. You may think winning is the most important determinant. But it was ranked 40th. Lots of players spend their weekends traveling or in tournaments (锦标赛). But they ranked “playing in tournaments” and “travelling to new places to play” 58th and 71st.
The players ranked “trying your best”, “exercising and being active”, and “getting along with your teammates” among the top 10 most important fun determinants.
Recently, Visek’s team compared the ranking results of boys and girls. They also compared younger players’ ranking results with older players’.
Some people think girls like sports because they want to be with their friends while boys like to compete. Visek’s team’s studies, however, showed boys’ and girls’ rankings were very close. The same was true for younger and older players.
So what can we learn from the studies? Visek said, “When it comes to organized sports, kids just want to have fun.”
