“Get enough sleep. Eat light in the morning. Run two laps (圈) and rest...” His dad had been giving advice about everything, as usual. “What time does your race start?”
“I...I don’t know,” Kenny lied, looking at his feet. “Do you have to go tomorrow?”
“Well,” his dad explained. “It’s not that I HAVE to. It’s that I WANT to.”
“Yeah, I know, but it’s just that you make me stressed. Dad, I think I’ll do better on my own.”
Kenny’s dad turned away slowly. Kenny saw his face and knew he’d made a mistake.
“Sure. I get it,” his dad said, leaving Kenny with his thoughts.
The next day, Kenny went to the playground and was ready for the running race.
“Come on, Kenny. Knees high, run faster,” Kenny heard every word from Coach Fisher, but his mind was somewhere else. The unhappy talk with his dad last night was on his mind.
“Now,” Coach Fisher’s voice cut in. “Remember—run through the finish line!”
At the starting line, Kenny felt excited and sorry. He’d done everything Dad said—slept early, eaten light, practiced hard. But something still weighed on him.
BANG! The race began. Kenny had a good start. Other runners were left behind. Kenny felt as if he was flying.
“I won’t run to the finish line. I will run through it,” Kenny said to himself. “You did it. Good job, Kenny,” shouted Coach Fisher.
“It is my best personal record, but I’m not feeling as good as I expected,” Kenny looked at the medal in his hand and said.
The round gold medal felt heavy and cool in his hand. He wanted to show it to someone...but that someone wasn’t there.
“Nice race, Kenny. By the way, would you go and check a seat in the last row before we leave?” Coach Fisher said.
Climbing up, Kenny suddenly stopped. He found a bag on a seat. There was a handwritten note on the bag. It said simply. “I was here. Proud of you.”
Kenny smiled with tears in his eyes. He knew that handwriting.

It is the first day of spring. You live in Dalian, Liaoning. The sky is clear, and the temperature outside your bedroom window reads 10℃. You have a friend who lives in Xiamen, Fujian, about 1,600 kilometers to the south. She says that the sky is bright and sunny and the temperature is 25℃. What causes the weather to be warmer in Xiamen than in Dalian?
One reason for the difference in temperature has to do with Earth’s shape. Earth is shaped like a ball. The equator (赤道) goes around the middle of the Earth.
When sunlight shines on Earth, heat energy from the Sun warms Earth’s surface. However, it does not warm all places equally (均匀地). Sunlight strikes Earth most directly at the equator. Imagine sunlight as a beam (光束) of light. At the equator, the beam shines straight down and makes a circle on the ground. But in places farther from the equator, sunlight hits the ground at a lower angle (角度), so the same beam spreads over a larger area and its shape on the ground changes from a circle to an oval (椭圆形).
The beam of light always has the same amount of heat energy. A beam that warms the Earth in an oval covers a greater area of the Earth’s surface than a beam that warms the Earth in a circle, so ________.
This is one important reason why areas farther north or south of the equator receive less heat energy from sunlight. Areas that are closer to the equator, such as Xiamen, usually receive more heat energy and are warmer than areas farther from the equator, such as Dalian.
根据材料内容选择最佳答案。
11. Why does the writer describe such a situation in Paragraph 1?
A. To tell us which city has better weather in spring.
B. To compare the temperatures of Dalian and Xiamen.
C. To show that spring comes at different times in China.
D. To show a weather difference that will be explained later.
12. Which of the following can take the place of the underlined word “strikes”?
A. gets through B. keeps off C. moves around D. falls on
13. Which of the following can be put in ________?
A. the oval beam has more heat than the circle beam
B. each part of the oval area gets less heat from the beam
C. the oval beam warms the Earth better than the circle beam
D. the circle area gets less heat from the beam than the oval area
14. Why is Xiamen warmer than Dalian according to the text?
A. Xiamen is closer to the sea. B. Xiamen is much smaller in area.
C. Xiamen gets more direct sunlight. D. Xiamen has more hours of daylight.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. How far Dalian is from the equator.
B. What the weather is like in Dalian and Xiamen.
C. Why the Sun doesn’t warm all places in the same way.
D. How spring weather is different in the north and the south.
D

Recently, our school did a survey about why some students don’t do housework. The results show that the biggest reason is too much schoolwork. 10% of students say their parents want to do everything. Some think other things are more interesting or don’t know how to do it.
To help solve these problems, here are my suggestions. First, treat housework as a break from studying. After sitting for an hour doing homework, stand up and sweep the floor. It relaxes your body and eyes. Second, do one small thing every day. You don’t need hours.
In my opinion, doing housework helps us become more independent. Let’s start small and make it a part of our daily life.
