It is a beautiful area that has been made into a park with meters of hiking paths (小路) along the river. One day, I discovered a wild path I had never seen before. It was really slippery (滑) because it was covered with ice. I was alone at the time and even though I was afraid, I still wanted to go for a walk. Just this thought made my heart beat faster. I was shaking, not from the cold, even though it was about -15℃ outside, but from fear. I knew I had to do it. I moved forward slowly and put one foot on the path, then the other. Then I continued, one foot in front of the other. I went very slowly down the path, shaking with every step. I was sweating (流汗) even though I felt cold. I had no idea how long it would take me to travel along the path, but I didn’t care. I just wanted to overcome my fear. At last, I succeeded! At least that’s how I felt. I nearly ran down the path. Well, not exactly ran, but it felt like that compared with my very slow speed in the beginning. Maybe you don’t think this is much of a story, but I just want to tell you that we never know what’s around the corner. If you compare this story to life, you’ll see that we have no idea where life is going to take us, or how many easy or difficult paths there are to choose from, until we make a choice! The point is: we have the right to choose! 19.Why did the writer sweat when taking the path? A.He felt very afraid. B.He shook to keep warm. C.He ran down the path. D.He wanted to fight his fear. 20.What do we know about the writer? A.He always likes taking risks. B.He travelled along the path with fear. C.He ran fast along the path. D.He went down the path with his friend. 21.What can we infer from the passage? A.The weather was warm that day. B.The path was not far from the river. C.The writer had walked the path before. D.The writer knew where life was leading him. 22.What does the writer mainly tell us through his experience? A.Rome was not built in a day. B.Things may not seem so dangerous in the end. C.It’s worth challenging our fears and pushing on. D.We do not have the right to do whatever we like. 第二段中提到“I was shaking, not from the cold... but from fear.”,第三段中提到“I was sweating (流汗) even though I felt cold.”,说明作者出汗是因为害怕。 20.第二段中提到“I was shaking... from fear”,第三段提到“I went very slowly down the path, shaking with every step”,所以作者是带着恐惧走完这条小路的。 21.第一段提到“My home is in Edmonton, near a river in the mountains. It is a beautiful area that has been made into a park with meters of hiking paths along the river.”,说明作者的家在埃德蒙顿,靠近山间的一条河流,这条野生小路是沿着河流的,所以可以推断小路离河流不远。 22. C What do cutting food and building planes have in common? Both of them use one powerful force: pressure. There are several types of pressure, but they all share the same law: a force acts on a surface. The smaller the surface area, the greater the pressure produced by the same force. We experience different forms of pressure in everyday life—mechanical pressure, when we press on an object; atmospheric pressure, when air pushes on everything around us; and hydrostatic pressure (静水压力), when it acts within water, such as the strong pressure deep in the sea. Now picture yourself stepping onto a snowy place. In ordinary shoes, you would go down into the snow immediately. But this won’t happen once you put on skis (滑雪板). It’s because your body weight is spread over a bigger area. The pressure becomes less, so the snow can support you. Cutting food with a knife works the same way. Without an understanding of how pressure works, it would be impossible to build a plane. A plane wing’s top surface is curved (弧形的). When a plane moves, air moves around its wing. The airflow (气流) over the wing speeds up because of its special shape. As a result, the pressure above the wing becomes lower than the pressure below it. The pressure difference creates an upward force called lift. This force balances the plane’s weight and allows it to stay in the air. In water, pressure increases with depth. When we build a dam (大坝), we make it wider and thicker at the bottom to hold back higher pressure from deep water. Pressure is one of the key forces shaping the world around us. By understanding its nature, we have learned to build machines that can fly into the sky and dive into the ocean, measure the heights of mountains, and explore outer space. 23.What is pressure according to the text? A.A kind of surface area. B.A force on a surface area. C.The total size of a surface. D.A force with no surface area. 24.Which one is reasonable if the force is unchanged? (x= Surface area; y= Pressure) A.B. C. D. 25.Which activity is about atmospheric pressure? A.Cutting food. B.Skiing on snow. C.Building a dam. D.Making a plane. 26.Why is the text written? A.To teach some useful living skills. B.To explain different kinds of pressure. C.To introduce pressure and its influence on us. D.To expect readers to develop new technologies. 根据第二段中“a force acts on a surface”及对压力的描述可知,压力是作用在表面上的力。 24.根据第二段中“The smaller the surface area, the greater the pressure produced by the same force.” D Many industries produce a lot of wastewater that contains both organic substances (有机物) and inorganic salts. If the wastewater is put directly into the environment, it can harm animals, plants, and people. However, the high salt content in the wastewater brings serious challenge for common treatment processes. Researchers from Rice University and Guangdong University of Technology have found a new way to solve this problem. They use a method called dialysis (透析), which is commonly used in medicine. The researchers chose commercial ultrafiltration membranes (超滤膜) which were designed to let salt pass through while trapping organic substances. They set up a system where salty wastewater and fresh water flowed in opposite directions on either side of a special membrane, without needing pumps. Because of the difference of salt concentrations (浓度) between wastewater and fresh water, salt naturally moves into the fresh water while organic substances are kept back. To test this, they compared the amount of organic material and salt in the wastewater before and after treatment. The results showed the system could take away salt without using extra fresh water. One important advantage of dialysis is its ability to avoid fouling (积垢). It needs less energy and less cleaning than other methods. Also, by choosing suitable membranes, researchers can separate different kinds of organic substances and even recover useful materials from the wastewater. This turns wastewater treatment factories into “resource recovery factories,” which is good for recycling. Dialysis alone cannot make the water completely clean. But it can turn high-salt wastewater into low-salt wastewater, which is much easier to treat with traditional methods. This new method is a big step forward for treating difficult industrial wastewater. 27.What is the main difficulty in treating the wastewater mentioned in the passage? A.There is not enough equipment. B.The water contains too much salt. C.There is a great deal of wastewater. D.The treatment costs so much money. 28.How does the dialysis process take away salt from wastewater? A.The membrane turns salt into organic substances. B.Extra pressure pushes the salt through the membrane. C.Both sides of the membrane use the same flowing direction. D.The salt moves naturally from the wastewater to the fresh water. 29.What does the underlined word “This” in paragraph 3 refer to (指的是)? A.Using dialysis. B.Making fouling. C.Inventing membranes. D.Changing salt concentrations. 30.What is the best title for this passage? A.Wastewater: A Challenge for Researchers. B.Membranes: Protecting Fresh Water from Salt. C.Dialysis: A New Helper for Cleaning Wastewater. D.High-Salt Wastewater: A Big Danger to the World. 根据第一段第三句“However, the high salt content in the wastewater brings serious challenge for common treatment processes.”,处理废水的主要困难在于“含盐量过高”。 28.根据第二段第二、三句“...flowed in opposite directions...without needing pumps. Because of the difference of salt concentrations...salt naturally moves into the fresh water while organic substances are kept back.”,“盐分是自然地从废水移动到淡水中的”,不需要额外压力,且水流方向是相反的。 29.根据第三段第三句“Also, by choosing suitable membranes, researchers can separate different kinds of organic substances and even recover useful materials from the wastewater.”,研究人员通过选择合适的膜,利用透析技术分离有机物并回收有用材料;紧接着的句子“This turns wastewater treatment factories into ‘resource recovery factories’...” No matter whether you like it or not, social media is becoming a big part of many teenagers’ lives. 31 According to a survey, over 90 percent of all Chinese young people use the Internet and 50 percent of these young people have made new friends online. While we 36 the fireworks (烟火), I heard my sister Isabel talking to my mom, “Mom, I’m going to the bathroom with Lizette, okay?” said Isabel. “Okay,” my mom replied, “but stay 37 . I don’t want any of you getting lost.” As soon as I saw my sisters leaving, I didn’t think twice before 38 them—without telling my parents. As I followed them through the huge crowd of people, I started to lose sight (看不到) of them. I gave up trying to find my sisters and tried to get back to my family, 39 I was completely mixed up. I started 40 . “Mommy!” I cried out. But everyone around me was too caught up by the fireworks to pay any attention to me. “What have I done? How could I have been so 41 to run off without telling anyone?” I thought. I kept running and crying. “Mommy!” I was hoping, wishing, that one of these adults (成年人) would be one of my 42 . Luckily, a soft voice came, “Are you 43 ?” “Yeeesss!” I cried. It was a lady working at Disney. She picked me up and carried me through the crowd as she kept asking me 44 my parents and I had been standing. I remembered 45 had been standing at an ice cream shop. She carried me around the ice cream shop, asking people, “Is this your 46 ?” 47 , through the crowd of people, I saw a face. D Many industries produce a lot of wastewater that contains both organic substances (有机物) and inorganic salts. No matter whether you like it or not, social media is becoming a big part of many teenagers’ lives. 31 According to a survey, over 90 percent of all Chinese young people use the Internet and 50 percent of these young people have made new friends online.
