In the kitchen his father was making some tea and his mother was reading the newspaper. “You look very serious this morning, Gary,” said his mum. “I was thinking about how to get into the Academy (学院),” said Gary. “But it’s too late now, isn’t it?” said his dad. “I can take the test again in six weeks, but if I pass, I’ll have to pay. It says so on this application form,” said Gary. “Let me have a look,” said Dad. His dad examined the form. He frowned (皱眉) when he looked at the list of fees. “What do you think?” he said passing the form to Gary’s mum. She frowned too when she saw the cost. “Sorry, son,” said Gary’s dad, “we just can’t afford it.” “Well,” said his mum, “we can afford to pay some of the cost, but not all of it. We could pay half. You could pay the other half. You could get a job — a paper round or something like that, but what about the test? Do you think you can pass it?” Gary thought for a moment. “No problem, mum,” he said. “I’ll pass the test and I’ll get a job. You’ll see!” In his room, Gary opened his maths and English book. He sighed. He didn’t know how he could pass that test. Cross-bridge Football Academy was a large modern building with every facility that you could imagine. At the end of their first day at the Academy, Matt, Joe and Karen found the cafeteria and sat there. It was full of young people laughing and chatting. “Well, I didn’t enjoy myself,” said Joe. “No, neither did I,” said Matt. “Something’s missing.” “Gary’s missing,” said Joe. “It’s not the same without him,” said Karen. “Oh, you poor children,” said a voice. Rick was standing by their table with a sports bag in one hand. “You’re all alone and your little friend is far away,” he said. “Well, get used to it. Gary isn’t coming here. He just isn’t good enough.” Rick threw his bag over his shoulder and walked away. “I’m not enjoying myself and I don’t like it here,” said Joe. “We need to do something about Gary,” said Karen. “I’ve got a plan,” said Matt. —Adapted from Mr Football 14.Why did Gary plan to take the test again? He just isn’t good enough.” 17.根据原文最后两段“We need to do something about Gary,” said Karen. “I’ve got a plan,” said Matt. Gary。 C For decades, scientists have worked to make smaller and smaller robots. Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania have developed some of the world’s smallest robots. The tiny, light-powered robots are smaller than a grain of salt. But they have a built-in computer and can control their own movements as they swim through water. The scientists faced many challenges in developing such tiny robots. To power the robot, the team chose to use a solar panel This allows a robot to run for months, powered only by light. But it also meant that they had to cover much of the robot with the solar panel, which didn’t leave room for much else. Getting the robots to swim was another challenge. Fish move forward by pushing the water behind them backward. But for a robot so tiny, moving through water is hard. Dr. Miskin says, “If you’re small enough, pushing on water is like pushing through tar—a thick black sticky matter from wood or coal.” In order to solve the problem, the robots create a tiny electric field around themselves. This field makes the ions (离子) in the surrounding liquid (液体) move. When those ions move, they bump into nearby water molecules (分子) and push on them. The moving water then carries the robot forward. What can the robots do? For one thing, they can sense the temperature of the liquid they’re in. They can also swim toward warmer temperatures. The scientists say the project is really only the “first chapter”. They believe the robots offer lots of possibilities for the future. One possibility is that someday similar robots could be used to report on the health of cells in the human body. And, though each robot is tiny, they can work together to tackle larger tasks as a group. 18.What writing skill does the writer use in Paragraph 1? A.Comparing B.Storytelling C.Questioning D.Listing 19.Why is it hard for the tiny robots to move in water like fish? A.They have no built-in computer. B.They move much slower than real fish. C.They can’t control their movements. D.They are too small to push water. 20.What is one use of the robots according to the passage? A.They can help clean dirty water. B.They can help repair human cells. C.They can sense liquid temperature. D.They can carry large things in water. 21.Which could be the best title of the passage? A.Solar Panels: New Power for Robots. B.Small Robots: Future Built-in Computers. C.Electric Fields: How Tiny Robots Move. D.Tiny Robots: Challenges and Possibilities. 根据第一段“The tiny, light-powered robots are smaller than a grain of salt.” 19.根据第三段“But for a robot so tiny, moving through water is hard. Dr. Miskin says, ‘If you’re small enough, pushing on water is like pushing through tar—a thick black sticky matter from wood or coal.’” 20.根据第五段“For one thing, they can sense the temperature of the liquid they’re in.” D Imagine eating only hamburgers every day. At first, it tastes great. But after a month, your body would be weak and sick because you need different kinds of food. Your brain works the same way. If you only read or watch one type of information, you will trap yourself in an information cocoon An information cocoon is like a mental bubble. It happens when you only see information that you already like or agree with. Social media apps make this worse. Their algorithms (算法) notice what you click on and keep showing you more of the same. For example, if you watch one funny cat video, your phone will give you a hundred more. If you agree with one political opinion online, the algorithm will hide the opposite view. Soon, you feel like everyone thinks the same way you do — but that is not true. You are just inside a cocoon. Staying in an information cocoon can hurt you in three ways. First, it narrows your mind. You stop hearing different opinions. Over time, you may become stubborn or even angry when someone disagrees with you. Second, it makes you easy to fool. Bad people can use closed online groups to spread lies or extreme ideas. If you never see the facts from the other side, you might believe those lies. Third, you miss the real world. Our world is full of different cultures, ideas, and people. Staying in your comfort zone means you lose the chance to learn something new and exciting. The good news is that you can escape from the cocoon. Here are some simple ways. First, search actively. Do not just wait for the algorithm to feed you. When you have a question, look for answers from different sides. Second, follow respectful “opponents.” Find one or two people who think differently from you but are still polite and logical. Listen to them not to argue, but to understand. Third, take a “news break.” Spend a few hours each week without short videos or recommended news. Instead, read a book, talk to a friend, or go outside. Your brain needs different kinds of information. Break the cocoon today, and you will see a bigger, more beautiful world. 22.How does the writer lead in the topic “information cocoon” in Paragraph 1? A.By giving scientific facts. B.By comparing it with eating habits. C.By providing readers with survey data. D.By asking readers a series of questions. 23.What is the main idea of Paragraph 2? A.How to avoid opposite views online. B.Ways to use phone algorithms more wisely. C.The working principles of social media algorithms. D.What an information cocoon is and how it happens. 24.What can we infer from Paragraph 3? A.Online lies or videos can hardly influence teenagers. B.Comfort zones help people learn more about the world. C.Staying in the cocoon harms people’s thinking and judgment. D.People in an information cocoon are more open to new ideas. 25.Which of the following is not a good way to escape from the “information cocoon”? A.Cindy watches her favorite short videos every night. B.Leo checks different websites for a school project. C.Anna listens to different opinions from her classmates. D.Tom looks for information in the library about chemistry. 第一段通过类比引入主题:“Imagine eating only hamburgers every day... Your brain works the same way.”,这直接说明作者是通过将“信息茧房”与“饮食习惯”进行比较来引出话题的。 23.第二段详细解释了“信息茧房”的定义和形成过程:“An information cocoon is like a mental bubble... Their algorithms notice what you click on and keep showing you more of the same.”,这说明本段主旨是阐述“信息茧房是什么以及它是如何形成的”。 24.第三段指出待在信息茧房中的危害:“First, it narrows your mind... Second, it makes you easy to fool... Third, you miss the real world.”,由此可以推断出“待在茧房中会损害人们的思维和判断力”。 25. Second, follow respectful ‘opponents’... Third, take a ‘news break’.”,选项A中“Cindy watches her favorite short videos every night”恰恰是陷入信息茧房的行为,与文中建议相悖,因此不是好的逃离方式。 Graduation is coming. It’s exciting to move on, but it can also feel a little sad. Before you leave, there are many things you can do to make this moment more meaningful. Thank your teachers. Teachers have guided you, helped you, and supported you in many ways. 26 You can write a note, draw a picture, or say something in person. A simple “thank you” can stay in a teacher’s heart for a long time. Take photos with friends. Photos are memories you can keep. But they never stop believing in each other. The film tells us that it’s never too late to dream, and true champions are those who try again 53 (brave). 44.peaceful 45.to take 46.his 47.difficulty/difficulties 48.an 49.driving 50.of 51.are made 52.problems 53.bravely 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲述了电影《飞驰人生》中张驰作为赛车教练,带领团队克服重重困难,最终在赛场上证明自己的故事。 固定搭配decide to do sth意为“决定做某事”。 46. These years, many college students choose to join the army after graduation. Zhao Huan is one of them. When Zhao Huan was 26 years old, he joined the army and became one of the soldiers on the top of Changbai Mountain in Jilin Province. The three-year life in the army made him really strong-willed. The weather on the mountain is terrible in winter. The snow can reach as deep as 2 metres. The lowest temperature can be -40°C. I was pretty excited when I was chosen to give a speech in front of the whole school. However, things didn’t go as smoothly as I had expected. I caught a bad cold a few days before the speech so that I hardly had time to read through my speech. Looking at the crowd, I felt like a fish out of water. At that moment, I noticed my teacher with a smile on her face in the crowd. I suddenly remembered the words she told me, “Confidence is the first step on the road to success.” After taking a deep breath, I started my speech and successfully won a lot of praise in the end. This experience gave me a sense of achievement. You could pay the other half. You could get a job — a paper round or something like that, but what about the test? D Imagine eating only hamburgers every day. Graduation is coming. Teachers have guided you, helped you, and supported you in many ways. 26 You can write a note, draw a picture, or say something in person. A simple “thank you” can stay in a teacher’s heart for a long time. Take photos with friends. Photos are memories you can keep. You can print them out, make a memory book, or share them with your classmates. 27 Write letters or memory notes. 28 In it, you can describe your dreams, your favorite subjects, and what you’re most proud of.
