In recent years, a special and warm new trend named “Becoming Chinese” has taken social media by storm all over the world. It became really hot in 2023 and attracted millions of young people from different countries.
The whole trend first started with a short TikTok video created by a Chinese-American lifestyle blogger: In her video, she did not show any fancy or surprising performances. Instead, she simply shared some common Chinese daily habits in her life: drinking warm water all day long, wearing comfortable slippers (拖鞋) at home, and enjoying a bowl of hot con-gee (粥) for breakfast every morning. These small and ordinary living ways looked simple but full of warmth.
Soon after the videos came out, it went viral online in just a few days. Lots of foreign people online were deeply interested in these slow and healthy Chinese lifestyles. They began to follow the trend and tried these habits by themselves. Many of them posted their own short videos online, showing that they were drinking goji (枸杞) tea in the afternoon, practicing Baduanjin to relax their bodies, and washing feet in hot water before going to bed. After keeping doing these things for some time, most foreigners said they slept better, felt less stressed, and became much healthier than before.
However, this popular trend does not mean foreign people want to change their own national identity (归宿感). They have no plan to give up their own traditions or home culture. In fact, it clearly shows that today’s young people from all over the world truly admire the gentle, simple and healthy ancient wisdom behind Chinese daily culture. Slowly but surely, traditional Chinese daily culture is winning more and more hearts around the world and building a bridge of cultural communication between different countries.
19. How did the trend “Becoming Chinese” begin?

B. Many foreign students learned Chinese traditions at school.
C. Chinese people introduced their lifestyles to foreign friends.
D. A Chinese- American blogger posted her daily life video on TikTok.
20. What result did foreign people online get after trying Chinese daily habits?
A. They slept a long time and felt more relaxed. B. They lived a healthier and less stressful life.
C. They stopped their own traditional lifestyles D. They gave up drinking coffee and started drinking goji tea.
21. The underlined phrase “went viral” most probably means ________.
A. disappeared quietly B. caused big trouble
C. was copied by few people D. became widely popular
22. Which is the correct order according to the passage?
①The videos became popular online ②Chinese culture wins global love
③Foreigners tried Chinese healthy lifestyles ④A Chinese- American blogger shared her daily habits
A. ②①③④ B. ④①③② C. ④③①② D. ③②①④

A Record-Breaking Night- in Xiamen
On the evening of May 23,2026, the Egret Stadium in Xiamen witnessed a truly historic moment. An 18-year-old Chinese javelin thrower (标枪手), Yan Ziyi, amazed the world with her very first throw of the competition. The young athlete sent the javelin (标枪) flying 71.74meters, setting not one but three new records at the same time.
Yan’s amazing performance broke the Asian record, which had stood at 67.98 meters since 2019. She also improved her own world U20 record from 65.89 meters. In addition, she set a new Diamond League record. What made this achievement even more special was that Yan had just celebrated her 18th birthday the day before the competition.
Before this competition, Yan’s personal best was 65.89 meters. Amazingly, she improved by nearly six meters in just one throw. More surprisingly, Yan was actually carrying a shoulder injury. Her coach, Lu Xiurong, later explained that Yan injured (弄伤) on her right shoulder during training in March. Because of this, Yan decided to give up her remaining five throws after that historic first attempt. Despite the injury, no other competitor could come close to her result.
Yan’s 71.74 meter throw is the second-best performance in women’s javelin history. It is only 0.54 meters short of the world record set by Czech athlete Barbora Špotáková in 2008.When asked about the world record, Yan showed great maturity (成熟). “I’m not in a hurry to break the world record,” she said. “I want to first keep my throws stable (稳定的) at the 71-meter level.” Her coach agreed, saying that protecting the young athlete’s health was the most important thing. With her talent and calm attitude, many believe Yan will one day stand at the very top of the sport.
23. How many records did Yan Ziyi break in the competition?
A. One B. Two C. Three D. Four
24. Why did Yan give up her remaining throws?
A. She was too tired to continue. B. The weather suddenly became bad.

“Sorry, son,” said Gary’s dad, “we just can’t afford it.”
“Well,” said his mum, “we can afford to pay some of the cost, but not all of it. We could pay half. You could pay the other half. You could get a job — a paper round or something like that, but what about the test? Do you think you can pass it?”
Gary thought for a moment. “No problem, mum,” he said. “I’ll pass the test and I’ll get a job. You’ll see!”
In his room, Gary opened his maths and English book. He sighed. He didn’t know how he could pass that test.

“Gary’s missing,” said Joe.
“It’s not the same without him,” said Karen.
“Oh, you poor children,” said a voice. Rick was standing by their table with a sports bag in one hand. “You’re all alone and your little friend is far away,” he said. “Well, get used to it. Gary isn’t coming here. He just isn’t good enough.” Rick threw his bag over his shoulder and walked away.
“I’m not enjoying myself and I don’t like it here,” said Joe.
“We need to do something about Gary,” said Karen.
“I’ve got a plan,” said Matt.

Do you know the greatest history book in ancient China? It is called Records of the Grand Historian, or Shiji in Chinese. Written by the historian Sima Qian about 2,100 years ago, this book changed how Chinese people wrote and learned about history.
Sima Qian lived in the Western Han Dynasty. His father was the Grand Historian and taught Sima Qian to love history. When his father died, Sima Qian took over his job. Later, he had a serious disagreement with Emperor Wu and was punished. But he never gave up. He worked hard for about 10 years to finish Shiji.
Shiji is very special. It is China’s first biographical general history. It tells stories from the legendary Yellow Emperor to Emperor Wu’s time — covering more than 3,000 years of history! The book has 130 chapters divided into five parts: Basic Annals (emperors’ stories), Hereditary Houses (noble families), Biographies (famous people’s lives), Tables (timelines), and Treatises (rules, music, and science).
Shiji records not only great achievements but also the rise and fall of dynasties. By reading it, people can learn from past successes and failures. Many famous figures appear in the book, like Qin Shi Huang (the first emperor) and Zhang Qian (who opened trade routes). It teaches us about loyalty, bravery, and wisdom. It also set a model for all later Chinese history books.
