Task IV Spread warmth through mailboxes.
Students at a primary school in Hangzhou, with the help of their Chinese teacher, created a set of "Smile Mailboxes" that students can drop letters into to get warm replies from older classmates during hard times. In just one month, the mailboxes received over 800 letters from students.
The mailboxes offer handwritten notes from students of different grades sharing warm messages. For example, if you drop a letter about feeling nervous about exams, you might get a reply saying, "You have tried your best! Take it easy, you will get good results!"
Lin Xiaoyu, who teaches Chinese at Star Road Primary School, thought her students just might have the warmest words needed to bring comfort to peers in difficult times. "To read the sincere words from fellow students is really comforting," she says.
Ms. Lin, along with social worker Chen Yue, worked with students on a project they called "Warm Post". The project had two parts—one was the mailboxes, and the other was creating encouraging hand-copied newspapers. The two adults worked with students from Grade 3 to Grade 6. They had the same basic question for all the students: "What could you say to help or encourage someone else?"
Students working on the mailboxes thought of what they would like to hear. When they were ready, Ms. Lin trained them to write replies. Later, she divided the students into different teams to check and send the replies.
Dropping a letter about "feeling upset with classmates" brings you suggestions on how to get along with others. Helpful suggestions include: "write a small card to say you are sorry" or "share your snack with them".
Dropping a letter about "worries about study" results in "words of encouragement and study tips". This includes messages like: "Make a small plan every day and you will make progress step by step." And "Ask teachers for help when you have difficulties."
Other students took part in making encouraging hand-copied newspapers, which were put up around the school. Many newspapers had small stickers that students passing by could take off and keep. For example, one newspaper said "If you are tired, take a break", and had take-off stickers with the words "You are great".
29. Why did the students create the Smile Mailboxes?
A. To make money for their school. B. To encourage and comfort their peers.
C. To practice their writing skills. D. To learn how to post letters.
30. What can we know about the project from the passage?
A. It included mailboxes and encouraging hand-copied newspapers.
B. It asked students to give advice on Chinese learning.
C. It was named "Warm Post" by social worker Chen Yue.
D. It brought comfort to teachers from different grades.
31. Which words best describe Ms. Lin and her students?
A. Creative and caring. B. Organized and curious.
C. Honest and hard-working. D. Humorous and generous.

Task VI Explore birds' plastic nests.
D
Plastic is everywhere. According to the United Nations, over 8 million tons of plastic waste enters the world's oceans every year. There's plastic litter on the highest mountains and in the deepest parts of the sea.
Now plastic has been found in another unexpected place: in the nests of wild birds. According to a study published in the journal Environmental Pollution, many bird species are using small pieces of plastic litter as building materials for their nests.
Marta García is a biologist at the University of Barcelona, in Spain. She's the study's lead author. "For me, a bird nest made of plastic could be a symbol of our times," she said. "They can't find enough natural materials, so they use rubbish."
García says the age we're in now is the period in which human activity has had a huge influence on the natural environment. Birds using plastic waste in their nests is one clear example of that influence.
New nest materials
Wild birds build nests to protect their eggs and baby birds. Normally, they use natural materials like grass, twigs, leaves and feathers to build soft and strong nests.
But according to García's study, of the 80 common bird species studied across Europe, 45 have been seen using plastic rubbish in their nests. Nearly three out of every four of those nests contained plastic waste, such as plastic bags, bottle caps, and plastic ropes. The others contained paper or cloth waste, such as old candy wrappers or cloth strips.
García said that she and her team first learned about birds using plastic in nests when they noticed photos shared by bird watchers online. They decided to learn more by doing a wider study. For their research, the scientists collected photos of bird nests from research papers, nature websites, and bird lover communities. They found examples from 23 countries across Europe. Some had been taken by scientists. Some had been taken by nature photographers. Many had been taken by common bird watchers who were just interested.
What does it mean?
Scientists aren't sure why birds are choosing litter instead of natural materials. But they have theories. Some areas are losing natural plant materials as cities expand. Birds could be turning to litter because they can't find enough grass or twigs. It's also possible that birds are selecting plastic because it's light and easy to carry. Or they're attracted by its bright colors.
Scientists agree that plastic pollution harms wildlife in many ways. But it isn't clear that the plastic in nests is directly hurting the birds. "It's really a surprising example of the power of adaptation," García said. "What are the long-term consequences of these adaptations? We don't know yet."
36. What does García mean by saying "a bird nest made of plastic could be a symbol of our times"?
A. Birds prefer light and bright plastic materials for nests.
B. All birds are now forced to build nests with plastic waste.
C. Plastic nests help birds protect their eggs better from enemies.
D. Human activities have caused great changes to the natural environment.
37. How did García and her team do their research on birds' plastic nests?
A. By collecting and studying photos of nests from different sources.
B. By taking lots of photos of birds in controlled environments.
C. By watching birds build nests closely in their natural habitats.
D. By interviewing local bird watchers about their findings.
38. What does the underlined word "expand" most probably mean?
A. Shrinking B. Growing larger C. Disappearing D. Moving
39. What can we learn from García's words in the last paragraph?
A. She plans to stop birds from using plastic to build nests.
B. She thinks birds should not change their nest-building habits.
C. She is sure that plastic pollution is good for wild birds.
D. She believes adaptation is amazing but its long-term results are unknown.
40. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Plastic Waste Is Harming All Wild Animals B. Wild Birds Are in Great Danger Now
C. Wild Birds Are Using Trash to Build Their Nests D. Scientists Photograph Birds Living with Plastic Waste

X Let's explore the amazing survival tricks in the natural world!
A)请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在短文后表格中第56-63小题的空格里填入最恰当的单词,回答第64小题。将答案填写在答题卡标号为56-64的相应横线上。

Have you ever watched a documentary about wild animals? A lion runs after a deer! A snake bites a frog! Is all nature like that? All about hunting and fighting? Or is that just what keeps our eyes glued to the TV screen? Let's look at some animals who protect themselves in smart ways instead of fighting back.
The first and most common trick is camouflage. Camouflage is when an animal changes its color or shape to match the environment around it, so enemies cannot find it easily. For example, chameleons can change their skin color to match the leaves or tree trunks. This helps them hide from both enemies and prey.
The second trick is mimicry. Sometimes an animal will look just like another dangerous or bad-tasting animal to scare enemies away. This is called mimicry. For example, some non-poisonous butterflies have the same bright color patterns as poisonous ones. Enemies see the bright colors and stay away, thinking they are dangerous.
The third trick is group living. Some animals live in large groups to protect themselves. When there are many of them, they can watch for enemies together and help each other escape. For example, zebras live in groups. When a lion comes, the whole group runs together, and the stripes make it hard for the lion to pick out one single zebra.
We use the word "anti-predator strategies" for all of these kinds of ways. Sometimes an animal hides by itself. Sometimes it scares enemies away by looking like something dangerous. Sometimes it works together with others. So, it is nice to know that there are so many smart ways for animals to stay safe in the wild. We could pay more attention to the animals that do not always fight on TV.
Nature's Amazing Survival Tricks

XI Let's bring old films back to life with the help of AI!
B)请根据短文内容及首字母提示,填写所缺单词,并将答案填写在答题卡标号为65-74的相应位置上。
Watching a black-and-white old film with your grandparents was once only a common scene at home. But now, AI is making this experience more f 65 —it's making old films, even those from 100 years ago, look clear and colorful. This fun project is from teamwork b 66 a Shanghai tech company and film archivists.
The team uses AI to collect information from old film tapes and digital copies. Also, they put them in o 67. The company's manager, Wang Ming, showed how useful the technology is. He restored a film from the 1920s. The stories and daily life scenes in old times were recorded on about 20,000 frames of film. People found these tapes in an old cinema in 2018. They are very valuable—they filled an e 68 part in Chinese film history and showed us people's life in old Shanghai.
Now, the AI-restored films are shown on many video platforms. The project has a new smart restoration system made by Wang's team.
They t 69 the old black-and-white pictures into colorful and clear videos. Visitors can scan QR codes in the film museum to watch these videos. Then they can feel w 70 life was like a hundred years ago.
All colors, clothes and scenes in the videos are b 71 on real historical records. For example, the street views got ideas from old photos of Shanghai. The team had to read many reports to get small details right. This was a big c 72 for them.
Wang loves Chinese film history very much. He said technology helps people l 73 about the past better. "History is not just locked in museum boxes—people can f 74 it and experience it," he said. He thinks "culture + technology" will make traditional culture easier for everyone to enjoy. For example, viewers could wear VR glasses to walk into the scenes of old films on screen.

六、书面表达(参考范文)
Dear Mr. Wu,
I think holding an English book sharing party is a wonderful idea. It's a great chance for us to share what we've read and practice our spoken English.
For activities, we can have a "favorite character show" where we introduce our favorite book characters in English. We can also play a guessing game about classic English stories. Both are fun and helpful for our English.
Thank you for your careful teaching over the past three years. I've really improved my English with your help.
Yours,
Li Hua
