As Kunqu Opera comes back to life, young performers are bringing centuries-old traditions into modern times.
He Xinyue is one of the 38 fifth-generation performers at the Jiangsu Kunqu Opera Theater, all born after 2000. She works hard to make Kunqu fit the taste of today’s audiences. “Kunqu is elegant because its stage is simple. Its sense of grace grows with just ‘one table, two chairs’,” she said.
However, learning Kunqu takes years of training. Performers start young, practicing tongzigong — skills like backflips and backbends (背弓).
In December 2024, the young artists staged their first complete show of A Dream Under the Southern Bough, a Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) play by Tang Xianzu. It was a shorter, 17-act version with a modern style. The original has 44 acts and follows Chun Yufen’s dreamlike journey.
For Cai Yisheng, acting as a Buddhist monk was difficult. “I didn’t have the calm manner the role required,” he said. For Song Bofan, it’s not only about physical skills. “You need to really take in the lines and understand the different feelings of the character,” he said.
Kunqu’s lines are a mix of Suzhou dialect (方言) and zhongzhouyun, or ancient Chinese pronunciation. This makes the performance harder. But for Li Jingyang, it’s part of the charm. “Each line follows a qupai (a fixed musical pattern), like a poetic tune from the Song Dynasty (960–1279),” she said. “It opens a window to classical literature”
For this generation, Kunqu is a way of life. “Even in everyday talking about characters and storylines,” Li said. “It just comes naturally to us.”
16. What do we know about Kunqu Opera from the text?
A. Its performers need to sing well.
B. Its stage setting is quite simple.

D. It is mostly popular with older people.
17. Why does the writer include the examples in Paragraph 5?
A. To show how hard it is to perform Kunqu.
B. To explain how to become a Kunqu performer.
C. To describe the performers’ love for Kunqu.
D. To suggest ways to understand characters.
18. What makes Kunqu’s lines difficult for performers?
A. They are very long and hard to remember.
B. They mix local dialect with ancient pronunciation.
C. They must be changed to fit modern musical patterns.
D. They require broad knowledge of classical literature.
19. What can we infer about the young performers from the last paragraph?
A. They want to create their own stories. B. They don’t perform very often.
C. Kunqu shapes the way they live. D. They find Kunqu easy to understand.
20. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The historical development of Kunqu. B. The difficulties in learning Kunqu.
C. What makes Kunqu popular today. D. Young people keeping Kunqu alive.

Urban flooding is becoming more common as climate change continues. Rising temperatures are causing sea levels to go up, and experts say this will continue and cannot be stopped in the next 20 years.
We’ve seen major flooding in places like China and the US. One report, The Growing Threat of Urban flooding, warns that this is a big problem. In Europe, more heavy rain is expected, especially in winter, while summers may stay very dry in many areas.
Cities often flood when rivers or the sea overflow. But another reason is that city drainage systems (排水系统) are not strong enough. Cities don’t have much open land, so rainwater must be sent to rivers or sewers (下水道). But if the system can’t manage too much water, even light but steady rain can cause big trouble. Urban flooding happens when rain hits hard surfaces and can’t soak into the ground.
Some cities are trying new ideas to stop flooding. In Norrebro, a district in Copenhagen, they use a special pavement (人行道) that lets water pass through into the ground. These are not too hard or expensive to build and keep. Smart technology can also help. The Copernicus Climate Change Service gives early warnings about flooding in cities to help people stay safe. People can help too. Using less plastic, reusing rainwater, and not throwing waste or harmful liquids into drains or rivers can all make a difference.
In China, the “sponge city” idea was created in 2013 by Professor Yu Kongjian. These cities use special designs to catch and clean rainwater, helping reduce floods while protecting nature and saving water.
21. What can we learn from Paragraphs 1 and 2?
A. Urban flooding will disappear within 20 years.
B. Climate change makes urban flooding more frequent.
C. Europe will face dry winters and rainy summers in the future.
D. Floods only take place in China and the US around the world.
22. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. How city drainage systems are built. B. Why cities should have more open land.
C. Why light rain is even more dangerous. D. What causes city flooding to happen.
23. What does the underlined phrase “soak into” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Flow over. B. Go through. C. Dry up. D. Fall off.
24. Which of the following actions helps cut down urban flooding?
A. Pouring harmful liquids into sewers. B. Using more plastic in daily life.
C. Collecting and reusing rainwater. D. Building more hard pavement without gaps.
25. Where can we likely find this text?
A. In a diary. B. In a storybook.
C. In a travel guide. D. In an environmental magazine.

根据第一段首句“Urban flooding is becoming more common as climate change continues.”
根据第四段中“People can help too. Using less plastic, reusing rainwater, and not throwing waste or harmful liquids into drains or rivers can all make a difference.”
People dine at a Cantonese restaurant that rejects the use of pre-made dishes.
Discussions show people’s need to know what they are eating. The term “pre-made dish” has been a hot topic over the past few weeks.
In September, 2025, celebrity businessman Luo Yonghao said on Sina Weibo that many dishes of the restaurant brand Xibei were pre-made. But Xibei denied this and invited the public to visit their kitchens. ____26____ This led to more controversy (争议). On Sept 15, Xibei apologized in an open letter, saying they had fallen short of customers’ expectations.
What are “pre-made dishes”? According to a 2024 government notice, they are prepackaged (预包装的) foods made from farm products and processed in factories. ____27____ Fresh vegetables and ready-to-eat foods such as salads and pizzas are not considered pre-made.
Many people worry that the additives (添加剂) in pre-made dishes may cause health problems. Tan Guijun from Tianjin First Central Hospital told Xinhua if these dishes are made, stored and cooked following food safety rules, they can provide enough nutrition (营养) for our bodies. ____28____
As the food industry grows quickly and life gets busier, many people agree that pre-made dishes have become an unavoidable trend (趋势). However, what matters is that restaurants are honest with customers about what they’re serving. At present, there are no clear rules requiring them to do so. “____29____” Legal Daily reported.
The government has been working to fix the problem. A draft of the national food safety standards (标准) for pre-made dishes has already been approved (批准,认可) by experts. It will soon be open for public comment. These standards clearly explain what pre-made dishes are. ____30____
A. Pre-made dishes need to be heated or cooked before eating.
B. Most people don’t want to eat these kinds of food.
C. Most businesses often choose not to provide this information,
D. And restaurants will have to tell the public if and how they use them.
E. They are not harmful to people.
F. During these visits, people discovered frozen broccoli that could last for two years.
F 27. A 28. E 29. C 30. D
根据前文“But Xibei denied this and invited the public to visit their kitchens.”
前文“What are “pre-made dishes”? According to a 2024 government notice, they are prepackaged (预包装的) foods made from farm products and processed in factories.”
根据前文“Tan Guijun from Tianjin First Central Hospital told Xinhua if these dishes are made, stored and cooked following food safety rules, they can provide enough nutrition (营养) for our bodies”可知,专家认为在符合安全规则的情况下,预制菜是有营养的,顺承此意,即它们对人体是无害的。
根据前文“However, what matters is that restaurants are honest with customers about what they’re serving. At present, there are no clear rules requiring them to do so.”
前文“These standards clearly explain what pre-made dishes are.”
