Ethan had always been the slowest runner in his class. Every PE lesson was painful—when his classmates ran fast ahead, he usually stayed behind.
The school’s yearly running race was coming. Many students advised Ethan to give up even before trying. “You don’t have to run if you’re just going to come in last,” his friend Jake said, trying to be kind. But Ethan made a decision. “I don’t mind being the last one,” he said. “I just want to finish.”
On the race day, the starting gun went off, and all the students ran forward. Within minutes, Ethan was left far behind. It was difficult for him to breathe and his muscles ached, but he kept running. By the halfway mark, most runners had already crossed the finish line. Then people started to leave, thinking the race was over. But Ethan was still there. Although his legs shook and sweat ran down from his face, he didn’t give up. Then, something unexpected happened. The head teacher, who had been about to leave, noticed Ethan. “We still have one more player!” he said after picking up the speaker. Many turned back. They stood by the track, cheering as Ethan kept going. He looked so tired, but the encouraging sound pushed him on. When he finally reached the end—last place—everyone cheered loudly. The head teacher said, “Being last doesn’t mean you lost. It shows that when others would choose to give up, you still have the courage to keep going.”
That day, Ethan learned something important: Success isn’t about being the fastest or the strongest — it’s about refusing to give up. And failure? It isn’t the end—it’s part of the journey.
19. What can we learn about Ethan from his words “I just want to finish” in Paragraph 2?
A. He thought he could win the race.
B. He wanted to show he was the best.
C. He didn’t care about the result.
D. He believed running was easy for him.
20. Which sentence is right according to the passage?
A. Ethan’s friend Jake encouraged him to take part in the race.
B. Most runners had already crossed the finish line when Ethan reached the halfway mark.
C. The head teacher cheered for Ethan from the very beginning of the race.
D. Ethan gave up halfway because his legs shook and sweat ran down his face.
21. What did Ethan learn from the experience?
A. Success comes from being faster than others.
B. True success lies in refusing to give up.
C. Failure is a dead end without a way out.
D. Only the first-place winners deserve respect.
22. What is the best title for this passage?
A. The Fastest Runner in School
B. How to Prepare for a Race
C. The Last Runner’s Victory
D. A Serious Head Teacher
C
“My longing to go to Qinghai has reached its peak.” “Only after watching Born to Be Alive did I learn that this land is the birthplace of three great rivers, and the true home of the Tibetan antelope (藏羚羊).”
Since the hit TV series Born to Be Alive became increasingly popular, countless viewers have shared their thoughts online. Many say it feels like watching a documentary (纪录片), as the series is shot against the beautiful landscapes of Qinghai and is based on real stories.
Where to Find Sanjiangyuan
If you have ever been to Qinghai, you may get the sense of water falling from the sky. This is no exaggeration. In the south of Qinghai Province lies Sanjiangyuan, the meeting place of waters that give birth to the Yangtze River, the Yellow River, and the Lancang River, which is known to the world as the Mekong (湄公河).
Each year, Sanjiangyuan sends nearly 60 billion cubic metres (600亿立方米) of clean fresh water to eighteen provinces in China and five other countries. It is the lifeline of hundreds of millions of people. For much of China, it is a main water source and is rightly called the “Water Tower of the Nation". As the saying goes, “When Sanjiangyuan sneezes(打喷嚏), the Yangtze and the Yellow River catch a cold.”
But this land is rich not only in water. Rising at an average height of 3,500 to 4,800 metres, Sanjiangyuan rests in the heart of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (青藏高原), the Roof of the World. It is the highest place on Earth where life gathers in such rich variety.
Here, nature preserves some of its most precious forms of life. Yet this area was once threatened by poaching (盗猎). The Tibetan antelope suffered the most, with numbers falling sharply from around 200,000 to fewer than 20,000. Born to Be Alive sheds light on the efforts made to protect these animals.
23. How many Tibetan antelopes were there before poaching became a serious problem according to the passage?
A. About 20,000. B. About 200,000. C. About 48000. D. About 60 billion.
24. Why is Sanjiangyuan called the “Water Tower of the Nation”?
A. Because it is the only home of the Tibetan antelope.
B. Because it has the highest average height in the world.
C. Because the TV series Born to Be Alive was filmed there.
D. Because it supplies clean fresh water to many places and people.
25. What does the saying “When Sanjiangyuan sneezes, the Yangtze and the Yellow River catch a cold” suggest?
A. Sanjiangyuan greatly influences the two rivers.
B. People living near the rivers often get sick.
C. The two rivers are far from Sanjiangyuan.
D. The weather in Sanjiangyuan is always cold and windy.
26. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To advertise the TV series Born to Be Alive.
B. To describe the beautiful landscapes of Qinghai.
C. To explain how the three great rivers are formed.
D. To introduce Sanjiangyuan and call for its protection.
D
Every winter season, I feel a rush of emotions and memories flood back as I look at the old scarf my mother used to wear. It was a simple woolen scarf, frayed at the edges and a bit faded in color, but to me, it held a world of meaning.
My mother was a hardworking woman. She would wake up before the crack of dawn to prepare breakfast for the family, then rush off to her job at the local factory. Despite the long hours and tiring work, she always managed to come home with a smile on her face, ready to listen to our stories and help us with our homework. I remember how she would wrap that scarf around her neck on cold mornings, as if it could protect her from any cold days.
One Christmas, I decided to save up my pocket money to buy her a new scarf. I spent hours in the store, carefully choosing one that I thought would match her eyes and bring out the warmth in her smile. When I finally presented it to her, her eyes lit up like stars. She immediately put it on and proudly showed it off to my father, as if it were the most precious gift she had ever received. But even though she had the new scarf, she still kept the old one, saying that it held too many memories to let go.
As the years passed, the scarf became a symbol of our bond. Whenever I saw it, I would think of the countless times my mother had comforted me with a hug when I was sad, or cheered me on when I was facing a challenge. She was my constant support, my rock in the stormy sea of life. Friends would come and go, but my mother was always there, ready to offer a kind word or a shoulder to cry on.
Now, I am a father with two kids. Whenever the winter winds blow, I take out that old scarf and hold it close to my heart. It reminds me of my mother's love, unwavering and unconditional. And I realize that the best gifts in life are not the ones that are bought with money, but the ones that are wrapped in love and memories. Just like my mother's scarf, which may be worn out and old, but to me, it is a treasure that I will cherish forever.
27. What does the underlined word frayed in Paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A. long B. broken C. colourful D. soft
28. What did the mother do when she got the new scarf?
A. She gave it to my father. B. She showed it off happily.
C. She threw the old scarf away. D. She put it on and went to work.
29. What can we know about the writer’s mother?
A. Busy and rich. B. Creative and patient.
C. Kind but strict. D. Hard-working and caring.
30. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. A Loving Mother B. My Childhood Memories
C. The Old Scarf Full of Love D. A Special Christmas Gift

B 24. D 25. A 26.

A Special Christmas Gift

fail to do sth.
所以可以填that/if/whether。
结合句意可知此处是反身代词作give的宾语,与主语you形成对应,反身代词可以是yourself(你自己)或yourselves(你们自己)。
end up doing sth.
