Cathy knows that she has an article that must be handed in on Monday. However, instead of beginning work on it today, she waits until the last minute. Of course, it is impossible to write an article in one night, so she gets a bad grade. She then kicks herself for not starting earlier and promises to do better next time.
Does Cathy’s story sound familiar? Like Cathy, many of us procrastinate-we put off doing something important until the last moment. But why do we do this? Some research shows that we do it because of negative feelings. We put off doing the work in order to avoid these bad feelings. Sadly, we are more likely to fail or do poorly. This creates even more negative feelings and makes it more likely that we will delay the next time.
The long-term solution to this problem is to deal with our negative feelings. We need to forgive (原谅) ourselves for failing. We need to accept that sometimes we will not meet the mark. We also need to realize that difficult work isn’t always a bad thing. It is through difficulty that we learn and grow.
So what can we do? Here are some tips. First, realize that once we face our fears and get started, our fears often go away, and we start to enjoy the work. Second, break large projects into small parts, then take each thing step by step. Third, give yourself a treat for getting a step done. Relax or do something fun, then get back to work. Finally, stay away from temptation. This means if you chat with friends to put off work, then work alone or find a place where nothing breaks your focus.
In the end, it is up to you and the actions you take to overcome procrastination. So what are you waiting for?
19.How does the writer start the passage?
A.By giving an example. B.By asking a question.
C.By introducing an article. D.By listing some facts.
20.What does the underlined word “delay” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.give up B.set off C.speed up D.put off
21.Which of the following can help to overcome procrastination?
A.Avoid doing things that may lead to failure. B.Face fears and then begin to work.
C.Design a suitable project before working. D.Keep talking with friends while studying.
22.What’s the purpose of the passage?
A.To explain the reason for Cathy’s poor article.
B.To show the influence of negative feelings.
C.To describe common problems in people’s life.
D.To encourage us to deal with procrastination.
C
Most 15-year-olds are busy with homework, but Lu Yulong was busy building a plasma speaker Born in 1995 in China, this young inventor later became famous as the “Lightning Man”. But his journey was not easy. When he was 12, a chemistry experiment went wrong and he was badly hurt. However, he did not give up. By 16, he had already built a plasma speaker and gotten a national patent (专利)!
Instead of going to a top university, Lu chose to start his own company, Yulong Aerospace. In February 2026, his team successfully launched a 12-meter liquid rocket named “Shenzhen Pioneer.” It flew 3.7 kilometers high.
So, what makes Lu special? He wants to make space travel very cheap. How? He uses common things like metal parts and everyday computer chips. He does not copy traditional rocket designs. Instead, he uses a simpler way called the “pressure-fed cycle,” which saves a lot of money. His goal is to send one kilogram of things into space for only 480 US dollars. That is much cheaper than SpaceX’s Falcon 9, which is a rocket made by an American company called SpaceX!
Another secret to Lu’s success is location. His company is in Shenzhen, a city with thousands of factories. Need a metal part? There is a factory nearby. Need a computer chip? Another factory can make it fast and cheap. Instead of buying expensive “space-grade” parts, Lu uses cheaper “industrial-grade” parts. He believes that building rockets should be like building cars—using factories to make many of them at a low cost.
Lu does not want to be called “China’s Elon Musk”. He says, “I just want to be Yulong from China.” By using the powerful factories in Shenzhen, he is building a new path for China’s space industry. His story tells us: you don’t need to come from a big name to reach for the stars. You just need a big dream—and the courage to build it yourself.
23.Which of the following is one of Lu Yulong’s secrets to success?
A.He follows traditional rocket designs.
B.He got a national patent at the age of 16.
C.He studied at a world-famous top university.
D.He makes good use of Shenzhen’s local factories.
24.Which is Lu’s way of cutting down the cost of rockets?
A.By making use of simpler designs. B.By copying traditional rocket designs.
C.By producing all the parts by himself. D.By asking other people for help.
25.What can we learn from Lu’s words, “I just want to be Yulong from China”?
A.He wishes to just stay in China.
B.He doesn’t like Elon Musk at all.
C.He wants to have a bigger name than this.
D.He is proud of himself and his motherland.
26.Why does the writer write this passage?
A.To compare Lu Yulong with Elon Musk.
B.To explain how to build a rocket step by step.
C.To encourage young people to follow their dreams.
D.To introduce the history of China’s space industry.
D
While teens and young adults usually spend much more time on screens compared to other age groups, psychologists now warn that older adults are also becoming more dependent on phones.
Nancy Ries, a retired teacher, spends five to six hours a day on her phone. “I hate to say it, but that’s true,” she says. She’s part of a growing number of older adults who spend about four hours a day on phones. Addiction Resource.net surveyed 2,000 people between the ages of 59 and 77. Half of them check their phones within an hour of waking up. And 40% feel uncomfortable when they are away from their phones. ①________
“One key sign of being addicted to (上瘾) phones is feeling uncomfortable without a phone,” said Monica Riordan, a professor at Chatham University, who studies computer-based communication. She says phones have become central to our lives—not only for communication and social media but also for things like booking plane tickets and shopping.
“How do I scan and buy things without my phone?” Riordan asks. Phones offer so much freedom, but they can also keep us trapped. ②________ “Older people depend on phones because they often feel lonelier than younger people, who go to work or school and see friends regularly,” she said.
③________ “If it stops you from living a healthy life, then you may have a problem,” Riordan says. In the survey, 50% of older adults had not tried to reduce their screen time while about 30% tried but almost all failed.
④________ Experts recommend limiting phone use to two hours a day for fun. But Ries said her screen opens up the world to her. “I’m happy with what I’m doing. Even if someone tells me, ‘Do you realize that you’re using the phone too much?’ I’ll say, I’m okay with that,” Nancy Ries explained.
27.According to the passage, we can know ________.
A.1000 people in the survey are addicted to phones
B.loneliness may make elders use phones more often
C.most elders feel sorry for depending on phones too much
D.600 people in the survey managed to reduce their screen time
28.The sentence “Too much screen time may lead to health problems, such as sadness and worry.” can be put in ________.
A.① B.② C.③ D.④
29.Why does the writer mention Nancy Ries twice in the passage?
A.To compare her ideas with those of the professor.
B.To advise other elders to learn from her lifestyle.
C.To serve as an example of elderly phone dependence.
D.To prove retired teachers use phones more than others.
30.What is the best title for this passage?
A.Teens Spend More Time on Screens Than the Old.
B.Phones Offer More Advantages Than Disadvantages.
C.How to Cut Down Screen Time to Two Hours a Day.
D.Older Adults Are Getting More Dependent on Phones.

THINGS I DIDN’T KNOW UNTIL I GOT TO THE UK
Every culture is filled with its own customs and interesting surprises. When travellers arrive in a new country, they often find things that seem new and surprising. Below, four visitors share fun discoveries they made after coming to the UK.
Lena from Ukraine
The food comes in really large servings. When I eat out with my friends, we usually share, because we don’t want all that food. But you can take home everything you don’t eat, and I like that. Also, in the winter, you often see people in the street or on the subway who are wearing just a T-shirt when it’s really cold outside.
Rahin from Pakistan
The textbooks are so expensive-I spent more on books than on food during my first month. Another thing is that when people talk to their boss or to their teachers, they call them by their first name. They do the same to old people too, even when they don’t know them well.
Chew from China
In class, students often stop the teacher to ask questions - and the teacher encourages it! Surprising, right? Also, everyone brings personal computers to class, even in big lecture halls. They take notes digitally, not in notebooks.
Tara from India
I couldn’t believe the tipping system (小费制度), for example, in places like the hairdresser’s. You cut my hair and I pay you-a lot! Another surprise was on the subway late one night. A noisy group got on, making us nervous, but as soon as the police boarded at the next stop, everything calmed down. I felt safe-that doesn’t always happen in public transport back home.
A.It doesn’t seem polite to me.
B.In my country, we do, too.
C.We can’t finish the food in the restaurant.
D.Why do I need to give you a tip as well?

21.第四段建议:“First, realize that once we face our fears and get started, our fears often go away, and we start to enjoy the work.”
22.最后一段总结:“In the end, it is up to you and the actions you take to overcome procrastination. So what are you waiting for?”

第四段提到:“Older people depend on phones because they often feel lonelier than younger people, who go to work or school and see friends regularly.”,这直接说明孤独感可能使老年人更频繁使用手机。
28.句子“Too much screen time may lead to health problems, such as sadness and worry.” 第五段提到:“‘If it stops you from living a healthy life, then you may have a problem,’ Riordan says.”,该句承接前文手机带来的“freedom”和“trapped”,引出过度使用手机对健康的影响,与后文“living a healthy life”相呼应。
第二段提到:“Nancy Ries, a retired teacher, spends five to six hours a day on her phone.”,最后一段提到:“But Ries said her screen opens up the world to her. ‘...I’m okay with that.’”,通过她的例子展现老年人对手机的不同态度,而非比较她与教授的观点、建议其他老年人学习她的生活方式或证明退休教师使用手机更多。
30.文章主要讲述老年人也日益依赖手机的现象,因此最佳标题是“Older Adults Are Getting More Dependent on Phones”。
E.Where I’m from, we never stop the teachers.

avoid doing sth.
主语Many traffic accidents和cause之间是被动关系,且every year表示一般现在时,要用一般现在时的被动语态,be动词用are,结构为are caused。
keep away from表示“远离”,因此填介词from。
此处为定语从句,先行词是students(人),关系代词用who/that。
