Do you like listening to music while studying? Can music help you focus? Tobias Lam, a 14-year-old boy in Austin, Texas, tried to find out.
Tobias is a piano player. He has always been interested in how music influences focus. As a 7th grader, he set up a project and won first prize at a competition.
To test his idea, Tobias carried out an online experiment (实验) with 65 people. He divided them into three groups. One group worked in silence, another listened to video game music, and the last listened to different tones (声调) in each ear.
Tobias found that the video game music failed to improve people’s focus. But people who listened to different tones performed better than those who listened to nothing. The results were really exciting, yet he couldn't be completely sure that these results did not happen by chance. However, Tobias didn’t feel down or see this as a failure. He saw it as a starting point for future studies.
If he did the study again, Tobias said he would give people more time to listen to the music. He believed this would create clearer trends (趋势) and stronger results. His test also showed that musicians performed better on the task. He found this “really interesting” and might study it in the future.
Hope Tobias’s future research will help students find better ways to focus while studying! Also, we hope more students will follow Tobias’s example, discover their interest and enjoy the pleasure of exploring science in daily life.
46.Why did Tobias set up the project?
A.To develop his creativity in daily life.
B.To show his love for music and science.

B.He thought that the results offered a starting point to study.
C.He thought that the results gave him a sense of failure.
49.What might Tobias do to improve his study?
A.He might give a longer test.
B.He might test more musicians.
C.He might set an interesting task.
50.What does the writer want to remind students through Tobias’s story?
A.Interest can lead to love for science.
B.Everyone can start his or her own interest.
C.Competitions can bring out the best in them.

Growing up, we are often taught that saying no is impolite. But sometimes we need to remember that we have the right to say no.
It is good to help others. But some people cannot say no at all. They are always afraid of getting into arguments or making others angry.
If you never say no, you will keep adding more work to yourself. This can make you feel very tired. And it is also bad for your mental (精神的) health. You always put your own needs aside to meet others’ needs. This sends a message that your needs do not matter—to yourself and to others. And others may take advantage of you.
Of course, sometimes we have to do things we don’t want to do. But if people always expect you to put your plans aside or take on extra work for free, you need to learn how to say no.
If you have trouble saying no, here is what you can do. First, ask yourself why you always say yes. What does saying no mean to you? Are you afraid of being disliked or letting people down? Did you learn to avoid difficult situations when you were young?
Taking care of yourself is not selfish. It is not your job to solve everyone else’s problems. Saying no is not rude—it is a way to respect yourself. When you say no to things that waste your time, you say yes to your own peace. Don’t be afraid to speak up. You have the power to control your time and energy.
51.Why do some people find it hard to say no?
A.Because they really want to help others.
B.Because they like the feeling of being needed.
C.Because they want to avoid arguments or anger.
52.What may happen if you never say no?
A.You will become more hard-working.
B.You may feel tired physically and mentally.
C.You will become more popular among friends.
53.What should you do first if you have trouble saying no?
A.Say no to everything you dislike.
B.Find out why you feel hard to say no.
C.Talk to your friends about their problems.
54.How does the writer feel about taking care of ourselves?
A.It makes us kind of rude.
B.It helps others feel peaceful.
C.It shows respect to ourselves.
55.Which can be the best title for the passage?
A.Learn to Say No B.Stop Helping Others C.Show Your Kindness
You may notice that horses appear in many Chinese idioms. These horse-related sayings reflect Chinese culture and ancient life.
“A horse that covers a thousand miles” is perhaps the most famous horse idiom. 56 Chinese parents often use this phrase to encourage their children, hoping they’ll become “thousand-mile horses” who achieve great things. The idiom comes from ancient times when people believed that great horses could run 1,000 miles in a single day.
“A swift horse needs a good rider” adds another meaning to this idea. Although talented people (“swift horses”) might be common, good leaders who can recognize talent (“good riders”) are uncommon. This saying reminds us that having talent isn’t enough. 57
“Ride a horse while looking for a better one” describes someone who is satisfied with their present situation, but always open to something better. Chinese people use this idiom to describe practical and ambitious (有雄心的) people. 58
“An old horse knows the way” celebrates the wisdom that comes with experience. Just as an old horse remembers the safest paths through mountains, experienced people can guide others through difficult situations. 59
60 They carry rich culture, valuable life lessons and wisdom. They also encourage us to be talented, thankful and keep making progress.
A.These people never stop improving themselves.
B.It describes people with amazing talent or potential.
C.All in all, these horse idioms are not just simple sayings.
D.You need someone who supports you and gives you opportunities.
E.This traditional saying tells us we should always stick to our first choice.
F.This idiom shows that Chinese respect the elders and their plenty of knowledge.
In ancient China, the school entrance ceremony was one of the most important ceremonies.
Children began school between the ages of 4-7 in ancient China. Since there was no certain time to begin a new term at that time, the most important thing for parents was to choose a lucky day for their children to enter school. Next, parents would prepare school things for their children, including desks, chairs and four treatures of the study.
In ancient times, teachers were usually very knowledgeable local persons. Parents would prepare many gifts, and then write an invitation letter to ask a knowledgeable man to be their children’s teacher.
On the day their children entered school, parents would take them to take part in the First Writing Ceremony. Before that, children would kowtow (叩头) to the statue of Confucius (孔子像) 9 times and then to their teacher 3 times to show their deep respect. During the ceremony, the teacher would put a red point on the students’ forehead (前额) as it meant opening the wisdom eye. Children would also ring a certain bell to start a new term. After that, they could finally sit down in their seats and begin to study. The First Writing Ceremony was a very important ceremony for every student.
Every day, students would arrive at school before their teacher, and kowtow to the statue of Confucius, and then go back to the seats to take lessons.

21.I asked three people the way to the zoo, but ________ of them could tell me the right way.
A.neither B.none C.either
根据“I asked three people”可知,涉及的对象是三个,排除用于两者的neither和either。
22.We won’t know ________ what we can do until we try.
A.on purpose B.for certain C.in short
on purpose故意地;for certain确切地;in short简而言之。
23.The lecture is educational enough to be worth ________ once again.
A.listening to B.to listen C.being listened
【答案】A
listen是不及物动词,接宾语“the lecture”时需加介词to,所以正确形式为“listening to”。故选A。
24.—Tom said he ________ down in bed yesterday.
—I don’t think so. He ________ to you. He ________ out his favorite food in the garden.
A.lied, laid, lay B.lay, laid, lied C.lay, lied, laid
【答案】C
【知识点】lay(laid laid)、lie n.
25.—________ you ________ your homework yet?
—Yes, I ________ it before 9:00.
A.Did, finish, have finished
B.Have, finished, have finished
C.Have, finished, finished
26.Compared with last year, our pay ________ about ¥500 every month.
A.has increased by B.has increased C.increased to
【答案】A
故选A。
27.—________ fun the Water Festival is!
—________ much I wish I were a Thai!
A.What, How B.How, What C.What a, How
【答案】A
故选A。
28.—I always make mistakes when writing a composition.
—Well, I think the writing method you are used to ________.
A.need to be improved B.needing to improve C.needs improving
29.—Tony has made great progress in English recently.
—________ and ________.
A.So he has; so you have B.So he has; so have you C.So has he; so you have
he和Tony主语相同,所以是so he has;第二空you和Tony主语不同,所以用so have you,故选B。
30.We will play ________ Class 2 in the next game. I hope we can win.
A.at B.in C.against
【答案】C
【知识点】介词辨析、play against、in、at
at在;in在……里;against和……

C
【答案】51.C 52.B 53.B 54.C 55.A

C“All in all, these horse idioms are not just simple sayings.”

C.To discover how music influences focus.
47.How did Tobias carry out the experiment?

B.By asking people to experience different sound conditions.

A.He was sure about the results.
