My goal was to finally finish in under four hours. Every week, I pushed myself. Sundays were no longer days for rest; they were for long runs under the moon. On weekdays, I rushed home from work, tied my shoes, and trained before I could talk myself out of it. I skipped gatherings and turned down invitations, not because I valued running over people, but because I couldn’t afford to miss a single session. Every kilometer was an investment. Then came race day. I woke up sick. My body hadn’t fully recovered, but my mind refused to give up. “You’ve trained too hard to quit now,” I told myself. The first half went perfectly. My pace was steady. My finish time looked likely to be 3 hours and 50 minutes. The route — a flat road lined with the city’s landmarks — filled me with pride. I believed I was reaching the dream I’d worked so long for. But as I entered the tunnel for the second time, everything changed. My heart rate shot up. The sickness returned, stronger than before. My body got heavier with each step. Soon I was walking. I thought about stopping — maybe even calling for an ambulance to take me back. But something inside me refused. I walked the remaining half of the marathon. Not as the strong, goal-driven runner I’d hoped to be, but as someone who simply wouldn’t quit. I crossed the finish line in 5 hours and 39 minutes — far from my dream. But as I reflected, I realized something. The marathon wasn’t defined by the medal, the time on my watch, or the number I’d hoped to see. It was defined by the months of preparation, the restless nights, the early mornings, the missed celebrations, and the effort I’d put into every single run. 4. What can we know about the author’s training? A. He sacrificed his social life for it. B. He practiced mainly on weekends. C. He adjusted his training plan flexibly. D. He did it under the guidance of experts. 5. Why did the author continue despite getting sick? A. He knew he had the potential to win. B. He wanted to prove himself to others. C. He felt a strong unwillingness to give up. D. He hoped to be respected by other competitors. 6. Which words best describe the author? A. Strong-willed and grateful. B. Hard-working and determined. C. Humorous and responsible. D. Ambitious and sympathetic. 7. What message does the text deliver? A. Good health is important in a competition. B. It is wise for people to make a detailed plan. C. It is necessary for one to set long-term goals. D. Success lies more in steady efforts than ideal results. C Sea spiders are crustaceans (甲壳动物) with long legs extending from their segmented bodies. They live in marine waters around much of the world. However, little was known about how these animals care for their young, until three researchers from the University of Hawaii at Mānoa decided to study the life cycle of a giant sea spider, the species Colossendeis megalonyx. Although most sea spiders are no larger than a fingernail, the legs of this Antarctic species can reach more than 30 centimeters in length. Scientists say this is a conspicuous example of “polar gigantism” — the principle that in polar regions animals tend to be larger than their relatives in warmer areas. It has been known that male sea spiders are the ones which care for the young, carrying them on their backs as they develop. But how Colossendeis megalonyx raised its young remained unknown, even though the species was first described in 1881. The mystery began to be uncovered in October 2021, when Amy Moran and two PhD students were diving under the ice in Antarctica. They came across a group of sea spiders that appeared to be mating. They collected some and kept them in observation tanks. The results showed something new about these sea creatures that had never been seen before. It turns out that the males of Colossendeis megalonyx care for their young in a simpler way than males of other sea-spider species. According to Moran, this simpler form of care may help scientists understand how more complex, continuous fatherly care evolves. A few weeks after the male had placed the eggs on rocks, the researchers noticed the eggs could hardly be seen. They were hidden by a layer of algae (藻类), likely to escape being eaten. “We could barely see the eggs even though we knew they were there,” says Lobert, one of the PhD students. “It’s probably why researchers have never seen this before.” 8. What may be the purpose of the research by the University of Hawaii? A. To locate new sea spider species. B. To prove the effects of polar gigantism. C. To study the parenting of a giant sea spider. D. To find regional differences in sea spider size. 9. What does the underlined word “conspicuous” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Noticeable. B. Negative. C. Rare. D. Mysterious. 10. What can be learned from paragraph 3? A. The discovery began during a lab experiment by accident. B. Female Colossendeis megalonyx usually look after their young. C. Nothing had been known about Colossendeis megalonyx before 2021. D. Witnessing the mating group was out of the researchers’ expectation. 11. What might be the function of algae to Colossendeis megalonyx? A. A material to build their nest. B. A protection measure for their eggs. C. A main source of food. D. A shelter from rain and sunshine. D You are sitting on a crowded subway train. An old woman boards and looks tired. Would you offer her your seat? Most people believe kindness comes from within. A study published in Nature suggests the answer may depend less on your personality than you think — and surprisingly, on whether a superhero is nearby. On the Milan subway, a research team designed a clever field experiment. They organized 138 separate rides. In each ride, a female experimenter, appearing pregnant (怀孕的), entered the subway car and stood near the seats. Meanwhile, an observer recorded whether any passenger offered her a seat. In the control condition, the pregnant-looking woman travelled alone. But in 68 of the rides — the experimental condition — something unusual happened: a man in a full Batman costume stepped through a different door and stood nearby, without doing anything else. The difference between the two conditions was striking. When “Batman” was present, 67.21% of the targeted passengers gave up their seats — almost twice as many as the 37.66% in the normal control condition. Statistical analysis confirmed that the effect was highly unlikely to have occurred by chance. Even more fascinating was what the researchers discovered when they interviewed passengers after the rides. Of those who offered their seats in the presence of “Batman”, 44% reported having never noticed the superhero at all. They had no conscious memory of seeing him, yet their behavior changed anyway. Why would a superhero costume — though unnoticed by some — make people more helpful? The researchers theorize that unexpected events break the monotony (单调) of daily routine, heightening people’s awareness of their surroundings. This heightened awareness makes passengers more sensitive to the needs of others around them. In other words, kindness can be started not only by internal values but also by small disturbances in the external environment — disturbances so small that our conscious mind fails to register them. The study offers a hopeful message for communities seeking to encourage prosocial (亲社会的) behavior. Expensive campaigns may not be necessary. Sometimes, a little surprise is all it takes. 12. How does the author introduce the topic? A. By telling a story. B. By raising a question. C. By listing some research results. D. By comparing different opinions. 13. What can be inferred from paragraph 4? A. Daily routine can reduce people’s attention to others. B. Superheroes set an example of helping others. C. People tend to be cold to strangers on trains. D. Internal values decide people’s behavior. 14. What is the significance of the study to communities? A. It offers a new way to encourage helpful behavior. B. It shows costly public campaigns are irreplaceable. C. It enhances people’s awareness of protecting the weak. D. It suggests subway staff should call on people to volunteer. 15. What is the best title for the text? A. Surprises Change Daily Life B. Effective Ways to Encourage Kindness C. The Importance of Inner Personality D. A Superhero Influences Others’ Kindness For today’s teenagers, most of their daily life is spent indoors. Screen time takes up much of their limited spare time, and rates of anxiety, poor attention, and academic stress have risen steadily among them in recent years. ____16____ Researchers studied 300 high school students across 5 local schools over a 6-month period. They divided the students into two groups: one group was asked to spend at least 15 minutes a day in a natural outdoor environment, while the other kept their usual daily routine without any changes. ____17____ Those who spent time in nature reported 23% lower levels of daily anxiety, and scored 15% higher on average in classroom attention tests than the other group. ____18____ Many people previously believed the benefits came from increased physical activity or time away from digital screens. But the analysis showed that even when students sat quietly under a tree without exercising or putting their phones away, they still gained the same positive effects. The natural environment itself calms the brain’s overactive stress response, helping it recover from long hours of focused study and digital stimulation. These findings have important meanings for schools and families. Many schools have begun to add short outdoor breaks between classes, replacing the traditional indoor rest time when students gather to play with their phones. ____19____ Even a 10-minute walk along a tree-lined road on the way to school, or a few minutes sitting by a window with a view of green plants, can make a difference. Many people still see nature as a luxury for teenagers with busy study schedules, something that takes time away from review and practice. ____20____ A. To explain these results, the team did a second round of analysis. B. Students needn’t take long hikes or have trips to faraway national parks. C. Parents were asked to report their children’s daily mood and learning state. D. Now, a new study has found a simple, low-cost way to deal with this trend. E. Many teachers have noticed this problem and tried to encourage more exercise. F. In fact, this small daily break from indoor life can improve their learning efficiency. G. Spending more time outdoors led to better relationships with classmates and teachers. When I moved into my new neighborhood, I noticed a small wooden box on the sidewalk in front of Mrs. Gable’s house. I learned that Mrs. Gable’s simple ____34____ had done more than sharing books — it had built a community. Growing up, I only had short conversations with him. He worked long hours as a mechanic, his hands always covered with grease (机油). I loved him, but I often felt like we lived in two different worlds. I was buried in books and dreams of college; he was buried under cars and the weight of making ends meet. The silence between us widened into a gap during my junior year. I had a burning desire to attend a creative writing summer program at a famous university across the country. It was expensive and, in his eyes, impractical. “Wasting money on dreams,” he said one evening, not looking up from the newspaper. That was his only comment. I felt very angry. The following Saturday, I planned to spend the day studying at the library, escaping the heavy silence at home. But as I walked towards the bus stop, I realized I’d forgotten my notebook. Annoyed, I turned back. As I approached our small garage, I heard a strange noise. Looking through the slightly open door, I stopped dead in my tracks. There was my dad, bent over his old workbench. But he wasn’t fixing a car. Around him were pieces of wood, fine sandpaper, and small tools I’d never seen before. In his grease-worn hands, he held a piece of polished mahogany (红木), carefully carving it into the shape of a fountain pen. On his workbench lay a worn-out copy of my favorite novel, The Catcher in the Rye, which I had carelessly left in the living room. He was painstakingly testing the pen he was making — dipping its unfinished nib (笔尖) into ink, copying a sentence from the book onto a piece of paper. Then he would stop, turn the piece of mahogany in his hand, and carve a little more. He wasn’t just making a pen; he was trying to build a bridge into my world, using the only tools he knew — his hands and his labor. My anger became a deep sense of shock and shame. I quietly pushed the door open and stepped inside. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ My dad handed me the roughly-carved pen, his eyes still avoiding mine. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 高二年级学业质量监测 英 语 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? 4. C 9. A 10. D 11. 根据第一段“However, little was known about how these animals care for their young, until three researchers from the University of Hawaii at Mānoa decided to study the life cycle of a giant sea spider, the species Colossendeis megalonyx.(然而,此前人们对这类动物如何抚育幼崽知之甚少,直到夏威夷大学马诺阿分校的三位研究人员决定研究巨型海蜘蛛(学名:巨肢深海蜘蛛)的生命周期。)” 根据第二段“Although most sea spiders are no larger than a fingernail, the legs of this Antarctic species can reach more than 30 centimeters in length. Scientists say this is a conspicuous example of “polar gigantism”(大多数海蜘蛛只有指甲大小,而这种南极海蜘蛛的腿长可达30多厘米。科学家称这是“极地巨型化”的一个conspicuous例子)”可知,此处指体型上的巨大差异十分明显、引人注目,所以猜测conspicuous表“显著的,明显的”,noticeable符合词义。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“The mystery began to be uncovered in October 2021, when Amy Moran and two PhD students were diving under the ice in Antarctica. They came across a group of sea spiders that appeared to be mating.(2021年10月,艾米・莫兰和两名博士生在南极冰下潜水时,偶然遇到了一群正在交配的海蜘蛛,这个谜团也随之被揭开。)” 根据第四段“They were hidden by a layer of algae (藻类), likely to escape being eaten.(它们(指卵)被一层藻类遮盖起来,这很可能是为了躲避天敌捕食。)” D You are sitting on a crowded subway train. A Superhero Influences Others’ Kindness 【答案】12. B 13. A 14. A 15. 根据第一段“You are sitting on a crowded subway train. An old woman boards and looks tired. Would you offer her your seat? 【答案】16. D 17. C 18. A 19. B 20. 注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 I quietly pushed the door open and stepped inside. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ My dad handed me the roughly-carved pen, his eyes still avoiding mine. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 I quietly pushed the door open and stepped inside. The creak made him freeze, his broad shoulders tensing. Slowly, he turned, and for the first time, I saw him look vulnerable — grease-stained hands hovering awkwardly over the unfinished pen, his weathered face flushing. “I wanted to give you something proper for your writing,” he mumbled. “Maybe you’d write home.” His calloused fingers traced the mahogany. “Not much schooling. I don’t understand the books. But I know how to make things last.” The sun caught the golden wood shavings. My dad handed me the roughly-carved pen, his eyes still avoiding mine. The wood felt warm in my palm, carrying the heat of his labor. “Dad,” I whispered, “the program — I don’t need to go.” He finally looked at me, his dark eyes glistening. “You go,” he said firmly. “A man needs dreams. I just wanted you to know I support you.” That evening, we sat on the garage steps, talking until deep night — about his first car, my stories, the future he never had but was building for me. 词汇激活 行为类 ①咕哝:mumble/murmur/grumble ②支持:support/root for 情绪类 ①脆弱的:vulnerable/weak/fragile ②尴尬地:awkwardly/embarrassedly  【点睛】 [高分句型1] The creak made him freeze, his broad shoulders tensing. (运用了独立主格结构作状语) [高分句型2] That evening, we sat on the garage steps, talking until deep night — about his first car, my stories, the future he never had but was building for me.(运用了现在分词短语作伴随状语和省略关系代词的限制性定语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
