He stopped under a tree, fixed his clothes, and took out his violin from the violin case. He left the case open and began to play.
As Jim played, beautiful music filled the street. People stopped to listen, drawn in by the lovely sounds. After a while, Jim could no longer stand his hunger. He picked up his case to collect money from the big crowd, and many people began to put money in his case. However, one man took money out and threw it at Jim’s feet.
Instead of getting angry, Jim picked up the money and handed it to the man. “Sir, you dropped your money,” he said kindly. The man, surprised, threw it back down on the ground. “Since I’ve already given you money, you must take it!” he said in an unfriendly way. Jim thought for a second, bowed, and said, “Thank you for your help, sir. Just now—your money fell to the ground, and I picked it up for you. Now, my money is on the ground—could you please help me pick it up?”
The man was shocked. The people around began to cheer for Jim’s words. Finally, the man picked up the money, put it into Jim’s violin case, and left in shame.

The four great towers are all famous for all kinds of poems and folk stories. In ancient China, people built pavilions and towers mainly in memory of historical events and achievements. The Yellow Crane (鹤) Tower is one of the four great towers of China. Throughout history, poets, writers and artists have travelled to the tower. The present Yellow Crane Tower was built in the 1980s, but the tower has been in different forms since at least AD 223. The original (起初的) building is believed to have been built as a watchtower for the army by Sun Quan. After hundreds of years, it gradually became a beautiful place to visit. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the tower was destroyed and rebuilt several times. In 1884, it was completely destroyed in a fire and was not rebuilt until 1981. In 1981, the local government decided to rebuild the tower at a new location, about one kilometer from the original one. It took four years to finish rebuilding this tower.
The Yellow Crane Tower offers visitors many things to see. The exhibition themes vary from floor to floor. The theme of the first floor is legends (传说). On the wall, there is a nine-meter long and six-meter wide painted porcelain (瓷) picture. It shows clouds, rivers and cranes. How the Brain Cleans Itself
According to some researchers, the brain is very active during sleep. One reason is probably that the brain cleans itself during sleeping hours. This idea has gotten the attention of researchers. This is because losing a good night’s sleep can cause people to think unclearly, while a lasting lack of sleep is believed to increase the risk of a serious brain illness. Then how does the brain clean itself?
Over 12 years ago, scientists at the University of Rochester first reported finding a system in the brain. A water-like substance (物质) moves through small channels near blood vessels (血管) to carry waste out of the brain.
One type of waste is called beta-amyloids (β淀粉样蛋白). Too much of it can cause brain problems. When scientists injected (注射) mice with beta-amyloids, they left the brain faster when the animals were sleeping.
However, studying this system in humans has been challenging. Regular MRI scans (扫描检查) can show some of the channels, but they can't show how the system works.
To tackle this problem, the research team injected a special substance into five patients. It “lit up” during MRI scans 24 to 48 hours later. It was seen moving through the brain using the channels as in the earlier research on mice.
This discovery is meaningful and will help scientists learn more on how brain waste clearance is linked to human health. “Researchers are now planning to measure (测量) glymphatic function (类淋巴功能) in people,” said Dr. Jeffrey Iliff who has helped lead the research. But he isn’t sure of the result. Besides the influence of sleep, animal studies show that a blood pressure drug might improve glymphatic clearing. Jeffrey and his workmates plan to study this drug in a group of patients. It seems that larger studies in healthy people are also needed.
68. What may happen if people lose a good night’s sleep?
A. They will only be tired and sleepy. B. They will feel much more excited.
C. They will find it hard to think clearly. D. They will face a serious brain illness.
69. How did the scientists study the system in humans?
A. They asked five patients to sleep. B. They took some pictures of blood vessels.
C. They injected a special substance into themselves. D. They used MRI scans and a special substance to help.
70. What does the underlined word “tackle” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Avoid. B. Cause. C. Compare. D. Overcome.
71. What will Jeffrey probably do in the future?
A. He will begin to work in the University of Washington.
B. He will start to research how sleep influences the clearing.
C. He will lead the waste-clearance research around the world.
D. He will study how the drug helps improve glymphatic clearing.
72. What would be the best structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
【答案】68. C 69. D 70. D 71. D 72. C

A. B. C. D.
