In Chinese culture, the gourd, known as “húlu”, is a symbolic plant with a long and rich history. For thousands of years, it has played a meaningful role in daily life and traditional beliefs. At first, gourds were used as practical tools for carrying water. Over time, they became deeply rooted in customs and folk stories.
Although the gourd looks simple in form, it carries deep meanings. The word “húlu” sounds simi-lar to “fúlù” (福禄), which means “good luck and wealth”. Because of this, the gourd is regarded as a symbol of wealth and luck.

For example, one of the Eight Immortals (八仙), Li Tieguai, often brings a gourd with him. It is said that there is magic medicine in his gourd.
Even today, the gourd keeps its cultural meanings in modern art. Artists combine traditional skills with modern styles to create new works. Moreover, as more people choose natural and healthy lifestyles, many people use gourds as home decorations to bring energy, better health and happiness.

What’s more, some hobbies can also bring physical advantages. Activities like playing the piano help improve your hand-eye coordination (配合).
