Sparks grew up mainly in north-central California, where his family moved when he was eight. He attended the University of Notre Dame on a track scholarship, but an injury ended his athletic career and led him to write his first unpublished novel. In 1988, he graduated with a major in business and held a variety of jobs. In the early 1990s, he and his wife, Cathy Cote, settled in North Carolina, which later provided a setting for his novels. While working his day job, Sparks continued to write. He cooperated with former Olympic runner Billy Mills on Wokini: A Lakota Journey to Happiness and Self-Understanding. The book, which was inspired by a Native American legend, was published in 1990. Determined to become a professional writer, Sparks spent several months working on The Notebook, his first published novel, which hit The New York Times best-seller list immediately after it reached the public in 1996. By the time the film adaptation (改编) was released in 2004, Sparks had published seven more novels. Although Sparks’s fiction usually involves love stories, he rejects the suggestion that he is a “romance novelist”. His supporters agree that Sparks explores more-serious subject matter, such as loneliness, sadness, and loss, and that many of his books feature less-than-happy endings. That is also evident in his only nonfiction work, Three Weeks with My Brother, in which he and his brother, Micah, share their own emotional responses to the deaths of their parents and sister. Sparks has devoted much of his time and literary profits to writing programs at Notre Dame and to charitable causes, most notably the Nicholas Sparks Foundation, which he and his wife established in 2011. 4. What led Sparks to write his first novel? A. A scholarship. B. His marriage. C. An accident. D. His major. 5. What do we know about The Notebook? A. It arrived in cinemas in 2004. B. It was written by two authors. C. It became a hit due to a report. D. It was Sparks’ nonfiction work. 6. Why isn’t Sparks a romance novelist? A. His stories have nothing to do with love. B. He prefers to record real events in lives. C. His books never end with happiness. D. He pays attention to various themes. 7. Which words can best describe Sparks? A. Lucky and careful. B. Tough and caring. C. Honest and brave. D. Tolerant and calm. C 5. A 6. D 7. 根据第二段中“He attended the University of Notre Dame on a track scholarship, but an injury ended his athletic career and led him to write his first unpublished novel.(他凭借田径奖学金进入圣母大学,但一次受伤结束了他的运动生涯,并促使他写出了第一部未出版的小说)”可知,一次受伤(即意外事故)促使Sparks写了他的第一部小说。 根据第三段中“Determined to become a professional writer, Sparks spent several months working on The Notebook, his first published novel, which hit The New York Times best seller list immediately after it reached the public in 1996. By the time the film adaptation was released in 2004, Sparks had published seven more novels.(决心成为一名职业作家的Sparks花了几个月时间创作了他的第一部出版小说《恋恋笔记本》,该书于1996年面向公众发行后立即登上了《纽约时报》畅销书排行榜。到2004年电影改编版上映时,Sparks又出版了七部小说)”可知,《恋恋笔记本》于2004年被改编成电影上映。故选A项。 根据第四段中“Although Sparks’s fiction usually involves love stories, he rejects the suggestion that he is a ‘romance novelist’. His supporters agree that Sparks explores more serious subject matter, such as loneliness, sadness, and loss, and that many of his books feature less than happy endings.(虽然Sparks的小说通常包含爱情故事,但他不认同自己是“言情小说家”这一说法。他的支持者们一致认为,Sparks探讨了更严肃的主题,如孤独、悲伤和失落,而且他的许多书都以不太圆满的结局收尾)”可知,Sparks不仅仅关注爱情故事,还关注各种不同的主题,所以他不是言情小说家。故选D项。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“He attended the University of Notre Dame on a track scholarship, but an injury ended his athletic career and led him to write his first unpublished novel.(他凭借田径奖学金进入圣母大学,但一次受伤结束了他的运动生涯,并促使他写出了第一部未出版的小说)”和第三段“Determined to become a professional writer, Sparks spent several months working on The Notebook, his first published novel, which hit The New York Times best seller list immediately after it reached the public in 1996.(决心成为一名职业作家的Sparks花了几个月时间创作了他的第一部出版小说《恋恋笔记本》,该书于1996年面向公众发行后立即登上了《纽约时报》畅销书排行榜)”可知,Sparks在受伤结束运动生涯后,没有放弃,而是坚持写作并取得成功,体现了他的坚韧。再根据最后一段“Sparks has devoted much of his time and literary profits to writing programs at Notre Dame and to charitable causes, most notably the Nicholas Sparks Foundation, which he and his wife established in 2011.(Sparks将大量的时间和文学收益投入到圣母大学的写作项目以及慈善事业中,其中最著名的是他和妻子在2011年成立的Nicholas Sparks基金会)”可知,他很有爱心,愿意为慈善事业付出。所以“Tough and caring(坚韧且有爱心)”最能描述他。故选B项。 C You know that old debate about whether dogs are smarter than cats? Well, science now has a definite answer. It’s dogs. That’s the conclusion of an international group of researchers, who found that dogs have twice as many neurons (神经元) as cats. Neurons are cells that deal with information. And so, the more neurons an animal has, the better its information processing capability, these scientists say. The study was carried out by researchers from six universities in the US, Brazil, Denmark and South Africa. It’s going to be published in the journal Frontiers in Neuroanatomy. The research was done in the lab of Suzana Herculano-Houzel, an associate professor of psychology and biological sciences at Vanderbilt University. Until recently, scientists interested in comparing intelligence across species were limited to using brain size as a sign. “In 2005, my lab came up with a very simple, quick and inexpensive way to count the cells in brains and brain parts,” Herculano-Houzel said. What the researchers did was take some brain matter and basically turn it into a soup. This freed up the cell nuclei (细胞核) so that the scientists could count them directly under a microscope. This is what they found when they looked at the cerebral cortex of cats and dogs. The cerebral cortex is the part of the brain that processes information. A cat’s cerebral cortex has 250 million neurons. A 15-pound mixed-breed (混合种) dog’s has 429 million. When they looked at a 64-pound golden retriever (猎犬), the number was even higher: 627 million neurons. “So, it’s plausible to say that dogs have about twice as many neurons as cats in their cerebral cortex,” she said. “And this means that dogs can do more thinking things than cats.” 8. What does the author imply about the old debate? A. It was surprising. B. It was meaningless. C. It was easily solved. D. It had no clear result. 9. Why did the researchers turn some brain matter into a soup? A. To wake up neurons. B. To study brain growth. C. To see neurons clearly. D. To study cortex better. 10. What affects the neuron numbers of dogs? A. Practice. B. Weights. C. Thinking. D. Lifestyles. 11. What does the underlined word mean in the last paragraph? A. reasonable. B. important. C. surprising. D. fearless. D 9. C 10. B 11. 根据第一段中“You know that old debate about whether dogs are smarter than cats? Well, science now has a definite answer.(你知道那个关于狗是否比猫聪明的古老的争论吗?现在,科学有了明确的答案)”可推知,以前这个争论是没有明确答案的。故选D项。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中““In 2005, my lab came up with a very simple, quick and inexpensive way to count the cells in brains and brain parts,” Herculano-Houzel said. What the researchers did was take some brain matter and basically turn it into a soup. This freed up the cell nuclei (细胞核) so that the scientists could count them directly under a microscope.(“2005年,我的实验室提出了一种非常简单、快速且经济的方法来计算大脑及大脑各部分中的细胞数量,”Herculano-Houzel说道。研究人员所做的就是取一些脑组织,将其基本转化为一种“汤”。这一过程释放了细胞核,从而使科学家能够直接在显微镜下对它们进行计数)”可知,研究人员把一些大脑物质变成“汤”是为了让细胞核分离出来,从而能在显微镜下直接数细胞核数量,也就是为了更清楚地观察神经元。故选C项。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中“A 15-pound mixed-breed (混合种) dog’s has 429 million.(一只15磅重的混合品种狗的脂肪有4.29亿)”和最后一段中“When they looked at a 64-pound golden retriever (猎犬), the number was even higher: 627 million neurons.(当他们观察一只64磅重的金毛猎犬时,这个数字甚至更高:6.27亿个神经元。)” 根据划线词句前文“A cat’s cerebral cortex has 250 million neurons. A 15-pound mixed-breed (混合种) dog’s has 429 million.(猫的大脑皮层有2.5亿个神经元,而一只15磅重的混血狗的大脑皮层则有4.29亿个神经元)”以及“When they looked at a 64-pound golden retriever (猎犬), the number was even higher: 627 million neurons.(当他们观察一只64磅重的金毛猎犬时,这个数字甚至更高:6.27亿个神经元)”,可知,狗的神经元数量大约是猫的两倍,从而推知划线词句“So, it’s plausible to say that dogs have about twice as many neurons as cats in their cerebral cortex(所以,狗的大脑皮层中的神经元大约是猫的两倍的说法是plausible)”中划线词应为“合理的”意思,与A项同义。故选A项。 D The Stanford marshmallow (棉花糖) test was originally conducted by psychologist Walter Mischel in the late 1960s. Children aged four to six at a nursery school were placed in a room. A single sugary treat, selected by the child, was placed on a table. Each child was told if they waited for 15 minutes before eating the treat, they would be given a second treat. Then they were left alone in the room. Follow-up studies with the children later in life showed a connection between an ability to wait long enough to obtain a second treat and various forms of success. As adults, we face a version of the marshmallow test every day. We’re not tempted (诱惑) by sugary treats, but by our computers, phones, and tablets — all the devices that connect us to the global delivery system for various types of information that do to us what marshmallows do to preschoolers. We are tempted by sugary treats because our ancestors lived in a calorie-poor world, and our brains developed a response mechanism to these treats that reflected their value — a feeling of reward and satisfaction. But as we’ve reshaped the world around us, dramatically reducing the cost and effort involved in obtaining calories, we still have the same brains we had thousands of years ago, and this mismatch is at the heart of why so many of us struggle to resist (抵抗) tempting foods that we know we shouldn’t eat. A similar process is at work in our response to information. Our formative (有重大影响的) environment as a species was information-poor, so our brains developed a mechanism that prized new information. But global connectivity has greatly changed our information environment. We are now endlessly bombarded (轰炸) with new information. Therefore, just as we need to be more thoughtful about our caloric consumption, we also need to be more thoughtful about our information consumption, resisting the temptation of the mental “junk food” in order to manage our time most effectively. 12. What did the children need to do to get a second treat in Mischel’s test? A. Take an examination alone. B. Show respect for the researchers. C. Share their treats with others. D. Delay eating for fifteen minutes. 13. According to paragraph 3, there is a mismatch between ______. A. the calorie-poor world and our good appetites B. the shortage of sugar and our nutritional needs C. the rich food supply and our unchanged brains D. the tempting foods and our efforts to keep fit 14. What does the author suggest readers do? A. Absorb new information readily. B. Use diverse information sources. C. Be selective information consumers. D. Protect the information environment. 15. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Eat Less, Read More B. The Bitter Truth about Early Humans C. The Marshmallow Test for Grownups D. The Marshmallow Test for Children 【答案】12. D 13. C 14. C 15. 根据第一段中“Each child was told if they waited for 15 minutes before eating the treat, they would be given a second treat.(每个孩子被告知,如果他们等15分钟后再吃零食,就会得到第二份糖果)”可知,孩子们需要等待15分钟不吃糖果才能得到第二份糖果。 根据第三段中“We are tempted by sugary treats because our ancestors lived in a calorie-poor world, and our brains developed a response mechanism to these treats that reflected their value — a feeling of reward and satisfaction. But as we’ve reshaped the world around us, dramatically reducing the cost and effort involved in obtaining calories, we still have the same brains we had thousands of years ago, and this mismatch is at the heart of why so many of us struggle to resist (抵抗) tempting foods that we know we shouldn’t eat.(我们之所以会受甜食的诱惑,是因为我们的祖先生活在一个热量匮乏的世界里,我们的大脑对这些食物形成了一种反应机制,这种机制反映了它们的价值——一种奖赏和满足感。但随着我们重塑了周围的世界,获取热量的成本和努力已大大降低,而我们的大脑仍然和几千年前一模一样。这种不匹配正是我们许多人难以抵抗那些明知不该吃的诱人食物的根本原因)”可知,这里的“不匹配”是指如今丰富的食物供应与我们未改变的大脑之间的不匹配。 【14题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Therefore, just as we need to be more thoughtful about our caloric consumption, we also need to be more thoughtful about our information consumption, resisting the temptation of the mental “junk food” in order to manage our time most effectively.(因此,正如我们需要更审慎地控制热量摄入一样,我们也需要更审慎地管理信息消费,抵制心理上的“垃圾食品”诱惑,以最有效地掌控自己的时间)”可知,作者建议读者要有选择性地摄入信息。 通读全文,尤其是第二段“As adults, we face a version of the marshmallow test every day. We’re not tempted (诱惑) by sugary treats, but by our computers, phones, and tablets — all the devices that connect us to the global delivery system for various types of information that do to us what marshmallows do to preschoolers.(作为成年人,我们每天都在面对一个“棉花糖测试”的翻版。 因此最好的题目是C选项“The Marshmallow Test for Grownups(成年人的棉花糖测试)”。 How to Feel Better About the Way You Look If you feel insecure about the way you look, you aren’t alone. ____16____ They can easily contribute to feelings of insecurity. If you would like to become more confident about your body and looks, there are steps you can take to change how you think about your body. Accept what you dislike about your body. ____17____ It is not realistic to expect yourself to love everything about your body at all times. Learn to accept what you do not like without focusing on it. Be able to compartmentalize (隔开) to a degree by loving your body overall, even when you know it’s imperfect. Practice positive self-talk. If you feel bad about yourself, you may find yourself putting yourself down a lot. You may engage in negative self-talk, which means you find yourself saying things to yourself like, “I can’t believe how fat you are” throughout the day. Try to replace negative self talk with positive self talk. ____18____ Provide your body with nourishment (营养). Many people with low self-esteem (自尊) try dieting or healthy eating as a means to change their bodies. ____19____ Think of healthy eating as a way of nourishing your body instead of a way of forcing your body to change. ____20____ If you’re feeling poorly about yourself, support is important. Seek out friends and family members who are positive. Try to spend time with people who feel good about their bodies and are generally positive. A. Turn to people around you for help. B. Surround yourself with supportive people. C. People have things about their bodies they dislike. D. Eating aims to give you a good mood instead of making you look good. E. People read a huge number of messages about beauty standards every year. F. Eating right can help you feel better about yourself, but do so with the right attitude. G. You may feel unnatural at first, but it raises your sense of self worth in the long run. E 17. C 18. G 19. F 20. 【16题详解】 后文“They can easily contribute to feelings of insecurity. (它们很容易导致不安全感)”主语为代词They,说明空处需要填入的话中有明确的被They指代的对象,且应为可数名词复数,即空处需要说明是什么导致了不安全感。E选项“人们每年都会接触到大量关于美的标准的信息”中的“关于美的标准的信息”恰好说明普遍焦虑的成因,是They指代的对象,符合语境。故选E。 【17题详解】 前文“Accept what you dislike about your body. (接受你对自己身体不满意的地方)”为第二段的总起句,是建立身体自信的第一个方法。空处开始展开说明为何要这样做,且后文“It is not realistic to expect yourself to love everything about your body at all times. (期望自己始终喜欢身体的每个部位是不现实的)”指出人不可能总喜欢身体每个部位的结论。空处既承接前文说明为何要接受对身体的不满,又为后文的结论提供前提。C选项“人们总有些身体部位令自己不满”满足此要求,衔接前后文。故选C。 【18题详解】 前文“Try to replace negative self talk with positive self talk. (尝试用积极的自我对话取代消极的自我对话)”指出练习积极的自我对话的方法。设空处是对前文的总结,需补充积极心理暗示的效果。G选项“最初可能感到不自然,但长期会提升自我价值感”既承接前文说明这种方法最初的感受,又点明长期的实施效果,符合语境。故选G。 【19题详解】 前文“Many people with low self-esteem (自尊) try dieting or healthy eating as a means to change their bodies. (许多低自尊者通过节食或健康饮食来改变身体)”说明低自尊者的做法,后文“Think of healthy eating as a way of nourishing your body instead of a way of forcing your body to change. (要想着将健康饮食视为滋养身体而非强迫改变的方式)”提到在思想上要如何看待这种做法。这表明空处需要一句能承接前文,既表明正确饮食的作用,又能引出后文的过渡性文字。F选项“正确饮食能提升自我感觉,但需保持正确态度”,既承认饮食的作用,又强调思想态度上的转变。故选F。 【20题详解】 后文“If you’re feeling poorly about yourself, support is important. (若自我感觉糟糕,支持很重要)”提到支持的重要性,且最后一段整段都围绕寻求周围人积极的支持展开,说明处于本段首句的设空处应谈及关于支持的内容。B选项“让自己置身于支持性人群中”,与后文核心词“support”直接对应,且后文“Seek out friends and family members who are positive. (寻找积极的朋友和家人)”正是该建议的实施方式。故选B。 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分25分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Most young people are always on their phones, which may upset many people. _____21_____, a group called Girl Scouts are receiving ____22____ for setting up their first walk-in clinic for elderly people, who have difficulty understanding how to _____23_____ the secrets of their smart phones. B Nicholas Sparks is an American novelist known for his best-selling tales of romance (浪漫) and heartbreak. C You know that old debate about whether dogs are smarter than cats?
