Sue tried her best to cheer John up. She sang and danced, she painted their favorite pictures, she told jokes, but John did not respond (回应).
“Five” he said quietly one day, as he looked out of the window. When Sue asked what John meant, he explained slowly, “There are…only five leaves left on the tree now. When the last leaf falls, I…shall go with it.” Upon hearing this, Sue couldn’t help crying. She went to their neighbor, Mr. Smith, who was also an artist.
Mr. Smith was sorry about John’s poor health. He wanted his friend to get better, and then he painted a leaf.
Over the next few days, it rained heavily, but the last leaf on the tree held on firmly (坚固地). Every day, John would look out and see the same leaf on the tree.
One day, the doctor came in and said John’s condition was improving. John said to Sue, “I’ve realized that life is hard, but I shouldn’t give up. That leaf has stayed on that tree for so long. It has taught me to live!”

The theme and main logo for the 2025 Spring Festival Gala (春节联欢晚会) were officially introduced on November 29, 2024. This great event, which marks the Year of the Snake in the Chinese zodiac, promises to be a celebration filled with joy and traditional Chinese culture. The theme for this year’s gala is “Si Si (巳巳) Ru Yi, Sheng Sheng Bu Xi,” which carries deep cultural and symbolic meanings.
The time from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. is called “Si Shi” in traditional Chinese timekeeping. In this system, a day is divided into 12 parts, and each part is two hours long. “Si” in Chinese represents the sixth part of the day, when the sun is high in the sky, symbolizing the rise of Yang energy and the hiding of Yin energy. It’s a time when everything seems to wake up and come to life, creating a beautiful scene. By using “Si Si Ru Yi” as the theme, the 2025 Spring Festival Gala hopes to bring good wishes to every family and the whole nation. “Sheng Sheng Bu Xi” means that life continues endlessly, representing the endless energy and prosperity of the Chinese nation.
The main logo is both creative and meaningful. Its design is inspired by traditional Chinese patterns and it uses the Oracle Bone Script character “Si” as its creative element. In detail, there are two “Si” characters put together in a mirror image, making it look like “Yi” (乙) and “Si” (巳). This means good things will happen twice, like a double wish for luck. It’s a nice way to connect the Snake Year with good luck and send happy blessings to everyone.
People are very excited to see this new logo and can’t wait for the 2025 Spring Festival Gala to start. It’s going to be a fantastic show, full of music, dance, and fun, just like every year.

C. Traditional Chinese Culture. D. Joy and Celebration.
12. Which picture represents the time of “Si”?
A. B. C. D.
13. The word “prosperity” in the passage is closest in meaning to ________.
A. sadness B. poverty C. failure D. success and growth
14. Which of the following statements about the main logo is TRUE?
A. It combines two “Si” characters in a mirror-like way.
B. It’s simply based on modern art.
C. It shows the “Dragon” character in ancient script.

15. Which of the following best describes the structure of the passage?
