Do you ever have problems getting all your work done? If you do, you should try the Pomodoro Technique.
“Pomodoro” means “tomato” in Italian. The Pomodoro Technique was created by an Italian, Francisco Cirillo, who used a tomato clock to count time when he was studying. Here is how the technique works:
Write down what you are going to do.
Get a timer.
Study for 25 minutes. This is called one “pomodoro.” Set a timer.
Stop studying when the timer goes off. Take a five-minute break.
Note: You should set a timer not only for the pomodoros but for the breaks as well. That way, you won’t stop for too long.
Start another pomodoro.
After four pomodoros, take a longer break, 15 to 30 minutes.
Note: The breaks help you focus and not feel tired.
So, next time you are learning for a test or doing homework, give the Pomodoro Technique a try. It may be the answer you need for studying smarter!

27. The poster was designed to ________.
A. share a story about an Italian
B. show the best time to take a break
C. share the history of the Pomodoro Technique
D. show a way of finishing work without wasting time
28. Which of the following statements is true about the Pomodoro Technique?
A. It is the best way to count time.
B. You need to set a timer for the breaks.
C. You need to buy a new watch for this technique.
D. It is easy to get very tired because the breaks are too short.

Have you ever imagined turning Chinese and English song lyrics (歌词) into classical Chinese? Pan Zijiang, a 27-year-old vlogger based in Guangdong, has made this amazing idea come true.
Pan became interested in music and classical Chinese from a young age. During morning reading at school, while other students read textbook articles aloud, he would make up simple melodies (旋律) and sing ancient poems to himself. In 2024, he began turning English and Chinese lyrics into classical Chinese and sang the songs with their original melodies. His works have had over 1 million likes on Xiaohongshu.
Pan’s adaptations (改编) aren’t just literal translations. He wants to express both the meaning and feeling of the original song. The adapted lyrics should also match the melodies well. “Take the line ‘I love you’ as an example. It has three syllables (音节), so the classical Chinese version (版本) has to be three characters. Also, the original line has a certain rhyme (韵律), so I keep the same rhyme in my adaptation,” Pan explained.
Pan often draws inspiration from ancient books like the Book of Songs (《诗经》). He once adapted the Chinese song Haitang Flowers Awake at Four (《四点的海棠花未眠》) into classical Chinese. One nice change was turning the lyrics “four o’ clock in the morning” into the expression yinshiyan (寅时夜阑). “It keeps the original meaning and paints a quiet night scene,” Pan said. He believes that classical Chinese can express rich information with just a few characters. “I hope to let more people feel its beauty through music.”
31. Why is Pan Zijiang good at adapting lyrics into classical Chinese?
A. He learned translation skills at school.
B. He has written many ancient poems for textbooks.
C. His interest in classical Chinese started early.
D. His followers on Xiaohongshu gave him lots of advice.
32. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The standards Pan follows when adapting lyrics.
B. Pan’s ideas for choosing the best songs.
C. The problems Pan faces during adaptation.
D. Different ways to adapt classical Chinese lyrics.
33. What does Pan think of classical Chinese according to the last paragraph?
A. It fails to create clear scenes.
B. It is too difficult for common people.
C. It can communicate a lot with a few characters.
D. It should be widely used in modern music creation.
34. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing the passage?
A. To encourage students to go after their dreams.
B. To explain how Pan spreads traditional culture.
C. To get teenagers to focus on classical Chinese.
D. To draw readers’ attention to Pan’s Xiaohongshu.
35. We can infer from the passage that Pan Zijiang is ________.
A. strict and quiet B. creative and thoughtful
C. shy and honest D. humorous and careless
C
①On a Sunday morning, your best friend calls you to ask for help. You gladly show up and help him. Then he hands you some money, saying “Thanks for your help.” The situation suddenly feels embarrassing (尴尬的).
②Why doesn’t direct pay fit the situation? According to Dan Ariely, we live in two worlds-one ruled by social norms (规范), and the other by market norms. Social norms include the friendly requests that people make to one another and immediate payback is not needed. While in the second world, people work for money. Market relationships are not necessarily bad, but they do suggest some benefits and immediate payments.
③When we keep social norms or market norms in their own way, things move smoothly. However, when they run into each other, the results are not satisfying.
④This is proved by an experiment made by Ariely. Some students always arrived late for school, so fines were introduced. However, this made more students late. Before the fine, students felt sorry for interrupting (打扰) the class and this feeling made them feel forced to arrive on time. But the fine took the place of this social norm. Students felt they were allowed to be late as long as they paid. Even after the fine was removed, the students didn’t return to social norms and the number of late students didn’t drop. The result showed a fact: when a social norm runs into a market norm, the social norm goes away and seldom returns.
⑤Then, do market norms always have a bigger influence than social norms? Ariely did another experiment by paying people $5 (Group 1) or $0.50 (Group 2) for running circles for five minutes. And to Group 3, he introduced the task as a social request, just asking them for help. The results showed that Group 1 ran about 159 circles, and Group 2 about 101 circles. But Group 3 who were paid nothing ran 168 circles. When people are paid, motivation rises as pay rises, but people work even harder under social norms than for money. Why? Because people love to feel that they help others.
⑥Money is the most expensive way to inspire people, but it will take you only so far—social norms are the forces that can make a difference in the long run.
36. What did the school fine experiment show?
A. Fines successfully reduced students’ lateness.
B. Fines made students feel they could pay to be late.
C. Students still arrived on time after the fine was introduced.
D. Fines and social norms worked best when used together.
37. What can we learn about Dan Ariely’s experiment in Paragraph 5?
A. Ariely expected people to help each other.
B. The group circling the most got the highest payment.
C. People acted under the same norms.
D. It showed the different influences of the two norms.
38. What does the underlined word “motivation” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. the reason to do something B. the way to solve problems
C. the ability to learn quickly D. the chance to get success
39. According to the passage, which one would the writer most probably agree with?
A. Social norms can play a great role in society.
B. Market norms aren’t as effective as they used to be.
C. Better performance sometimes leads to lower payment.
D. People should replace market norms with social norms.
40. The structure of the passage may be ________.
A. B.
C. D.
D
ALBERT Einstein is right once again! The physicist thought of the idea about gravitational waves (引力波) 100 years ago with his Theory of Relativity (相对论), but scientists are finally discovering proof of it now. But what are gravitational waves, and why are they important?
Well, gravitational waves are made by black holes and can change time in space. Black holes aren’t holes but are a lot of matter packed into a very small area, according to NASA. They are created when a star, much like our sun, explodes and leaves behind this dense material. It doesn’t shine like a star anymore, and it becomes black.
The black holes that made these waves are special. About 1.3 billion years ago, there were two black holes that kept moving closer and closer together. Finally, they crashed into each other and formed one big black hole. The energy released by the crash created ripples (涟漪) in space. These ripples are gravitational waves. Gravitational waves are hard to detect (探测).
A special gravitational wave observatory (天文台) called LIGO discovered the ripples on Feb 11, 2016. Einstein was brilliant to know this 100 years ago before we had the technology.
This is important because it can give us a new view of the universe we live in, according to LIGO scientists. Now, we will be able to detect black holes and things that are much further away from Earth, which means much more space exploration in the future. And who knows, this discovery could even lead to time travel!
In April, 2026 German scientists shared a new study about two very large black holes. A black hole comes about after a star runs out of energy and begins to die, according to NASA. Its gravity is super strong and pulls everything in.
In the new study, the two black holes circle each other every 121 days. However, they will not continue this forever. Scientists believe that in about 100 years, they will run into each other.
41. Which of the following about gravitational waves is NOT true?
A. Albert Einstein knew about them. B. They were found about 100 years ago.
C. They were made by black holes. D. They can change time in space.
42. What does the underlined “They” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Gravitational waves. B. Black holes.
C. Stars. D. Different materials.
43. What does Paragraph 3 talk about?
A. How black holes are formed. B. Why black holes are black.
C. How gravitational waves are created. D. Why gravitational waves are important.
44. The discovery of gravitational waves can help people ________.
A. understand the pattern of water B. set up a special observatory
C. learn more about the universe D. travel anywhere freely
45. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. The two black holes will crash in a century.
B. Black holes have weak gravity inside.
C. Stars turn into black holes when growing bigger.
D. The two black holes move around each other yearly.

The Truth Behind Lying
Most children learn honesty from fairy tales and other stories. Pinocchio (匹诺曹), a famous puppet, must tell the truth, or his nose grows longer. In the US, kids learn six-year-old George Washington bravely admitted cutting the cherry tree, winning his father’s praise. These stories tell children “honesty is the best policy”. ____46____
One reason people lie is to hide mistakes. It is true that everyone does something wrong from time to time. ____47____ For example, students may lie about unfinished homework, saying it’s left at home, just to avoid trouble and save face.
Another reason people lie is to get away from situations they don’t want or can’t deal with. For example, if a company has a weekend meeting, a manager may not want to go. She may call her boss and give an excuse. ____48____ People often do this when they don’t want to tell the truth and face the results.
However, people sometimes might tell a “white lie”. For example, if your good friend has an ugly haircut, you can say it’s special instead of “It looks terrible”. ____49____
People lie for many good and bad reasons. ____50____ But lying to avoid trouble may bring more trouble in the end. If we know why people want to lie, we may lie less.
A. People lie to avoid difficulties.
B. But people still lie for many reasons.
C. Lying to keep the peace can have positive results.

【答案】31. C 32. A 33. C 34. B 35. B

A. B.
C. D.
【答案】36. B 37. D 38. A 39. A 40. A

【答案】41. B 42. B 43. C 44. C 45. A

【导语】这篇短文主要介绍了引力波的概念、产生原理、探测发现过程及其对人类探索宇宙的重要意义。
【41题详解】
根据第一段“The physicist thought of the idea...100 years ago...but scientists are finally discovering proof of it now”以及第四段“discovered the ripples on Feb 11, 2016”可知,爱因斯坦100年前提出了想法,但引力波是在2016年被发现的,而非100年前。
(How gravitational waves are created)。
【44题详解】
根据第五段“This is important because it can give us a new view of the universe we live in”可知,这一发现能给我们看待宇宙的新视角,意味着能帮助人们了解更多关于宇宙的知识。
【45题详解】
根据最后一段最后一句“Scientists believe that in about 100 years, they will run into each other”可知,科学家认为大约100年后(即一个世纪后)这两个黑洞会相撞。

D. These lies are not bad and help keep good relationships.
E. However, people don’t have the courage to say they are wrong.

B“But people still lie for many reasons.”能够转折承接上文,从“理想中的诚实”过渡到“现实中人们仍然说谎”,自然引出下文对说谎原因的分析。
【47题详解】
第二段前文提到“It is true that everyone does something wrong from time to time.”,后文举例“学生可能谎称作业忘在家里”。选项E“However, people don’t have the courage to say they are wrong.”能够承接上文,解释人们为何选择说谎而非承认错误,与后文的举例形成因果逻辑。
【48题详解】
第三段前文提到经理编造借口不参加周末会议,选项A“People lie to avoid difficulties.”能够承接上文,概括本段的核心观点——人们说谎是为了逃避不想面对的困难,与后文“People often do this when they don’t want to tell the truth and face the results”形成呼应。
【49题详解】
第四段前文提到“white lie”的例子——朋友剪了难看的发型,你可以说“很特别”而非“太丑了”。选项D“These lies are not bad and help keep good relationships.”能够承接上文,对善意谎言的性质进行评价,说明这类谎言并非坏事,有助于维护良好关系。
【50题详解】
第五段前文提到“People lie for many good and bad reasons.”,后文用“But”转折指出逃避麻烦的谎言可能带来更多麻烦。选项C“Lying to keep the peace can have positive results.”能够承接上文,补充说明说谎也有积极的一面(如维护和平),与后文的转折形成对比,使逻辑完整。
