What if I don’t play well?” Mr. Boxwell smiled at Derek and said lightly, “You’re the best middle school saxophone player I’ve taught. You will blow away the people at camp with your talent. Is there anything else troubling you?” Derek looked down at his shoes. He wasn’t sure how to tell Mr. Boxwell that he had never been to an overnight summer camp. What if he didn’t make any friends? What would the food be like? Mr. Boxwell looked down into Derek’s eyes. “My first summer camp experience was a music camp when I was your age. For some reason, I had the ideas in my head that I wasn’t going to make any friends and that I was going to miss my mom’s cooking.” He laughed again. “Well, I did miss my mom’s cooking, but I was surprised by how quickly I made friends with the other kids from the band and the orchestra (管弦乐队) kids too.” Just then, the door opened and in walked Mr. Graham, the orchestra teacher. “In fact,” Mr. Graham said, “That’s where we met 25 years ago! A. ⑤④①②③ B. ③⑤④①② C. ①③⑤②④ D. ③④⑤②① C How quickly can you count from one to ten? Many people think that numbers and math are the same all over the world. But scientists have discovered that it is not true. People in different parts of the world use different ways to count on their fingers. In the United States, people begin counting with their first fingers, which they extend (展开). They then extend the rest of their fingers and finally the thumb (拇指) to count to five. Then they repeat this with the other hand to get to ten. In China, people count by using different finger positions. In this way, a Chinese person can easily count to ten on only one hand. Besides ways of finger counting, scientists have found that cultures and languages are also different when it comes to numbers. A group of scientists studied aboriginal (土著的) people in Australia. These people don’t have hand movements to stand for numbers. They don’t even have word for numbers. However, they are still able to understand different ideas about numbers. In a similar study, researchers discovered that people of the Piraha tribe (部落) in northwestern Brazil don’t have words for numbers such as “one” or “three”. Professor Edward Gibson said, “It is a group that does not count. They could learn, but it’s not useful in their culture, so they’ve never picked it up.” Although all humans are able to understand quantities (数量), not all languages have numbers and not all people use counting. Number words in a certain language are a result of people needing numbers in their daily lives. Now we know that people have different ideas about numbers and math, too. 26. What do we learn from the difference in finger counting between the U.S. and China? A. People from China need two hands to count from one to ten. B. People from China count much faster than people from the U.S. C. People of different cultures use the same way of finger counting. D. People of different cultures may use different ways of finger counting. 27. Which of the following agrees with the facts about aboriginal Australians in the text? A. They have only a few words for numbers. B. They can only count to five on their fingers. C. They have hand movements to stand for numbers. D. They can understand different ideas about numbers. 28. What conclusion can we draw from the research of the Piraha tribe? A. People of the tribe have words for number. B. People all over the world know how to count. C. Counting is not useful in the culture of the tribe. D. Some groups of people are not smart enough to count. 29. Which is the RIGHT structure of the passage? (①=Paragraph 1, ②=Paragraph 2, …) A. B. C. D. 30. What is the main idea of the passage? A. In some aboriginal culture, people don’t even know how to count. B. Chinese people can count more easily on their fingers than Americans. C. People from different cultures have different ideas about numbers and math. 第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读短文,从下面所列选项中,选出最佳选项填入对应空白处,使短文通顺、连贯。(选项中有一项多余) Have you ever been to Macao? They became the world’s first kids to be “taught” by a digital (数字的) teacher. Will, their new digital teacher, is not a human-like robot walking around the classroom. Instead, he is a computer-created head that turns up on the students’ computers or smartphone screens when called. Developed by Vector and Soul Machines, Will is able to reply to questions the kids might have using a microphone. Thanks to a digital camera, he can also pick up non-verbal signals (非语言信号) and react. For example, if a student smiles at Will, he can smile back. This two-way communication not only helps draw the students’ attention but also allows the program’s developers to make changes to Will if needed. Greg Cross, the Chief Business Officer for Soul Machines, says, “Kids who have grown up in this digital time get used to new technology quickly. So we hope to develop the idea of digital humans in the education area.” However, no matter how popular it becomes, Will is unlikely to replace human educators any time soon. For one, his knowledge base is not large. More importantly, even the smartest digital humans can never predict and react to all the unexpected problems that educators have to solve daily. But Will could come in handy as a “personal teacher”, providing kids with one-on-one help on the subjects or even topics. Will is a ____46____ teacher. (仅填1词) Greg Cross invented Will because he hoped to ____47____ in the education area. (不超过8词) Fill in the blanks according to the passage. C. Some languages don’t have number words because people don’t need them. D. People from different cultures have different ideas about numbers and math. 【答案】26. D 27. D 28. C 29. A 30.
