Surely, the most reliable way is to look it up in Xinhua Dictionary. Since its birth in 1953, Xinhua Dictionary has been a must-have book in schools across China. More than 567 million copies had been sold by 2016. So it was even recognized by the Guinness World Records as the “most popular dictionary” that year. Small as the dictionary is, it means a lot to China. The dictionary was given the name Xinhua by the chief editor Wei Jiangong, and it carried the hope of a country reborn. In 1949, around 80% of China’s population wasn’t able to get education (教育). It was Xinhua Dictionary that had reduced the number to 52% by 1964. To make it easier for illiterate people to understand, the earliest copies had many pictures. Thanks to Xinhua Dictionary, many Chinese got new chances in their life. Mo Yan, the 69-year-old Nobel Laureate, once mentioned the dictionary in his speech. He said that he was lucky to have a copy of the dictionary after dropping out from school. He learned most of Chinese characters from it, and that helped him write novels and enter a college later. This important dictionary has also recorded the development of the language and society. It is revised (修订) every five to ten years. Recent copies have included many new explanations. The character “晒” (to dry something in the sun), for example, now has a second meaning: to share. In a way, the dictionary hasn’t just explained characters; it has reflected (反映) the way Chinese people think. 31. When did Xinhua Dictionary first come out? A. In 1949. B. In 1953. C. In 1964. D. In 2016. 32. What does the underlined phrase “illiterate people” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. People who are bad at maths. B. People who can’t draw or sing. C. People who are too old to see. D. People who can’t read or write. 33. Why does the writer use the example of Mo Yan in Paragraph 4? A. To share a speech about the dictionary. B. To offer advice on using the dictionary. C. To show the influence of the dictionary. D. To explain the development of the dictionary. 34. Which part of a magazine is the passage probably taken from? A. Nature. B. People. C. Culture. D. Business. 【答案】31. B 32. D 33. C 34. C 【解析】 【导语】本文主要讲述了新华字典自问世以来一直是中国各地学校的必备书籍,它让不会读写的人识字,它还记录了中国语言和社会的发展。 【31题详解】 细节理解题。根据“Since its birth in 1953, Xinhua Dictionary has been a must-have book in schools across China.”可知,自1953年诞生以来,新华字典一直是中国各地学校的必备书籍。可见新华字典首次问世是在1953年。故选B。 【32题详解】 词义猜测题。根据“In 1949, around 80% of China’s population wasn’t able to get education (教育). It was Xinhua Dictionary that had reduced the number to 52% by 1964.”可知,1949年,中国约80%的人口无法接受教育,到1964年《新华字典》将这一数字减少到52%。“To make it easier for illiterate people to understand, the earliest copies had many pictures.”意为,为了让……更容易理解,最早的复制品有很多图片。所以illiterate people意为“不会读写的人”,也就是“文盲”。故选D。 【33题详解】 推理判断题。根据“He said that he was lucky to have a copy of the dictionary after dropping out from school. He learned most of Chinese characters from it, and that helped him write novels and enter a college later.” C。 B It was late on Christmas Eve. Reyn, the owner of a watch repair shop, was preparing to close the door when he suddenly saw a young man walking towards his shop. The man looked pale and serious in a thin jacket. Reyn noticed the hand of the man shaking uneasily in the right pocket of the jacket. “Maybe there’s a pistol (手枪) in it,” Reyn’s heart beat fast, but a voice inside him said, “Don’t be afraid.” The man came closer and said in a low voice, “Give me the money. Right now!” Reyn took a deep breath and smiled, pointing to his ear and pretending (假装) that he was unable to hear anything. The man looked surprised. For a long time, the two people just stood face to face, in silence. Just then, Reyn noticed a watch on the man’s wrist. It was an old one worth no more than 5 pounds, but it was the most valuable thing on him. The watch seemed to go wrong. An idea then came into his mind. He pointed to the man’s watch and picked up the tool used for repairing. “Does he want to help me repair the watch?” The man thought and suddenly became embarrassed. Looking at him, Reyn understood that the man had no choice but to ask for money on such an evening. Reyn began to feel sorry for him. The watch was common, but at this moment it had great power—it kept the two men in balance and gave Reyn time to find a way out. Reyn started to repair the watch carefully and this action won the man’s trust. His hand came out of his pocket, and he even watched Reyn with interest. However, Reyn purposely left out the last small part, so the watch still couldn’t work. He put down the watch, shaking his head to show that he couldn’t repair it. Then he pointed to his “pawn (典当) shelf” full of clocks and watches. Reyn wrote a note, explaining that he’d like to pay the man some money if he wanted to pawn the watch. Then he took out $100 and handed it to the man. The man looked at the money thankfully. He knew that his watch wasn’t worth much. Three months later, Reyn received a remittance (汇款) of $100, together with a message from the young man: “I have found a job now. Although I don’t get much money from the job, I can support myself. Thank you for pawning my watch. You helped me get out of trouble and made me feel warm. May good people live a happy life.” 35. What happened between Reyn and the man at the beginning? A. The man closed Reyn’s shop. B. The man asked for Reyn’s money. C. Reyn gave the man a thin jacket. D. Reyn lost hearing because of the man. 36. Why did Reyn help the young man repair the old watch? A. Because he found the watch valuable. B. Because he thought the man was poor. C. Because he hoped to escape from the trouble. D. Because he needed to show his excellent skills. 37. How did Reyn’s feelings change in the story? A. Afraid—calm—sorry—happy. B. Angry—sorry—relaxed—afraid. C. Afraid—sorry—excited—calm. D. Angry—relaxed—happy—sorry. 【答案】35. B 36. C 37. A 【解析】 【导语】本文讲述了钟表店老板Reyn在圣诞夜遇到一名欲抢劫的年轻人,通过假装修表、提供“典当”帮助的方式,既化解危机又以善意救赎对方的故事。 【35题详解】 根据文章第二段中年轻人说的话“Give me the money. Right now!”可知,起初这个人向Reyn索要钱财。 【36题详解】 根据文章第五段“The watch was common, but at this moment it had great power—it kept the two men in balance and gave Reyn time to find a way out.”可知,Reyn帮助修理手表是为了争取时间找到脱身之法。 【37题详解】 根据第一段“Reyn’s heart beat fast...Don’t be afraid”可知,他起初害怕后镇定(Afraid—calm);根据第四段“Reyn began to feel sorry for him”可知,他感到同情(sorry);最终危机解除,年轻人离开并后来归还了钱,暗示结局圆满(happy)。情感变化顺序为 Afraid—calm—sorry—happy。 C In a noisy restaurant, you can still hear your friend’s voice clearly. You talk happily without paying attention to others’ conversations. That’s because selective (选择性的) attention is helping you. Selective attention is an amazing ability in our brain. It allows people to choose and focus on (专注于) something in the environment. At the same time, it can filter out (过滤) unnecessary information, so people can focus on one conversation in a crowded place. But how does selective attention work? Researchers from Columbia University did an experiment to study it. The result shows that the brain is selective about the sounds it hears. When a person listens to someone talking, their brain waves (波) change to pick out the features of the speaker’s voice and filter out other voices. To further understand how selective attention works, the researchers studied two parts of the brain’s listening centre: Heschl’s gyrus (HG) and the superior temporal gyrus (STG) . Information from the ears reaches HG first, passes through it and arrives at STG later. In the study, they found the following facts: in HG area, every voice is treated the same way. That is to say, HG doesn’t prefer one voice or another. But in STG area, it’s possible to choose one speaker’s voice and make it louder. The whole process (过程) only takes 150 milliseconds and it happens immediately to a listener. As a result, people can focus on one voice when there are many other conversations around. “Today’s study is quite important. We want to better understand how the brain helps us to hear so well, as well as create technologies that help people,” said Dr. Mesgarani, the leader of the researchers. With the help of the finding, speech recognition technologies have been improved. The researchers have already developed, a new kind of hearing aid that can help collect information more correctly. It could make one speaker’s voice louder over another. They also plan to study more about HG and STG activity, in situations that have more speakers. 38. What can selective attention help people do according to the passage? A. Choose where to talk. B. Hear more in a conversation C. Forget unnecessary information. D. Focus on one voice in a noisy place. 39. What will the researchers most probably study in the future? A. How to improve listening B. How the listening centre works. C. How to make a better hearing aid. D. How HG and STG protect each other. 40. What’s the best title for the passage? A. A Great Ability in Brain B. A New Study on Technologies C. A Key to Reducing Noise D. A Way to Make Conversation 【答案】38. D 39. B 40. A 【解析】 【导语】本文介绍了大脑中的选择性注意力这一神奇能力,解释了它的作用、工作原理,以及相关研究和应用前景。 【38题详解】 根据第二段“At the same time, it can filter out unnecessary information, so people can focus on one conversation in a crowded place.”可知,选择性注意力能帮助人们在嘈杂环境中过滤无关信息,专注于某一个声音。 【39题详解】 根据最后一段“They also plan to study more about HG and STG activity, in situations that have more speakers.”可知,研究人员未来计划进一步研究HG和STG在多说话者场景中的活动,也就是听力中枢的工作机制。 【40题详解】 全文围绕大脑中的“选择性注意力”这一能力展开,介绍其定义、原理、研究及应用,因此最佳标题为“A Great Ability in Brain”。 D Thousands of years ago, in the south of ancient China, there lived Shengnong, a man who had an ox(牛) head and human body. Seeing that local people were suffering from disease, he built ladders and houses on a high mountain to store hundreds of medical plants. To remember him, people named the place Shengnongjia. His hand came out of his pocket and he even watched Reyn with interest. May good people live a happy life.” 35 What happened between Reyn and the man at the beginning? A. The man closed Reyn’s shop. B. The man asked for Reyn’s money. C. Reyn gave the man a thin jacket. D. Reyn lost hearing because of the man. 36. Why did Reyn help the young man repair the old watch? C In a noisy restaurant, you can still hear your friend’s voice clearly.
