Hobbies not only make us happy, but also keep our brains healthy. Many scientists believe hobbies can help people stay active mentally as they grow older. A Canadian study even found that long-term hobbies may improve brain structure and memory.
The research studied 58 people who love bird-watching. Half were experts who had spent many years watching birds, while the other half were beginners. Both groups included people from their 20s to their 70s and had similar educational backgrounds. Scientists wanted to see whether hobbies could make a difference to the brain.
During brain scans, volunteers saw a bird photo for less than four seconds. Then, they had to choose the correct bird from four different pictures. The test was repeated 72 times using 18 kinds of birds. Some birds were local, while others came from different countries and were less familiar.
The expert group correctly identified 83 percent of local birds and 61 percent of non-local birds. Beginners only got 44 percent right for both. The scans also showed important differences in brain structure. Scientists found that the areas responsible for attention and working memory were more compact in the experts. In other words, these brain areas were more closely connected and could work more efficiently, even in older people. These areas also “lit up” when experts tried to identify non-local birds, but this did not happen in beginners’ brains.
Creative hobbies, such as music and dancing, are also good for the brain. A 2025 study found that dancers’ brains appeared over seven years younger than their actual age. AI research also showed that even 30 hours of creative learning could help improve brain health. Scientists believe creativity shapes not only culture but also biology.

One day, Debbie’s doorbell rang suddenly. It was 16-year-old Amy from next door. “Help! My brother Dylan is bleeding,” she shouted. Debbie ran to their house to find 8-year-old Dylan bleeding heavily from a huge cut in his arm. Amy was looking after Dylan while their mother was shopping in the supermarket. Dylan fell while running through the house, pushing his arm through a glass door by accident.
Debbie recently took a first-aid course (课程) and knew what to do. “I knew I needed to stop the bleeding. I got a towel (毛巾) from the bathroom and used it to press the cut,” she said. Dylan was crying, so Debbie comforted (安慰) him while pressing the towel to stop the blood from running. She told Amy to call for an ambulance because she knew the cut would need medical treatment. Just as the ambulance arrived, Dylan’s mother came home. She was deeply shocked but held Dylan’s arm at once. Then a nurse helped him and they travelled to the hospital together in the ambulance.
A few weeks later. Dylan got well and was back from the hospital. Dylan’s mother thanked Debbie. “I’m so happy that I learned first aid,” Debbie said. “I never thought I’d need to use my first-aid skills so soon, but I’m very glad I knew what to do. The towel did a great job in stopping the blood from running.”

In some countries, especially in Asia, it’s common to see people wearing face masks in public. Most people wear masks to help prevent allergies, avoid spreading or catching diseases. Others wear masks to avoid talking to people, to keep their faces warm in winter, or even for fashion.
But do face masks actually protect people against illness? How can we use masks in the right ways?
Not All Masks are Equal
There are three common kinds of face masks: cloth masks, medical masks and respirator masks (防护面具). Cloth and medical masks can only protect us from liquids. But respirator masks can also clean the air, and they usually cost more.
Respirator and medical masks can help stop some diseases. Respirator masks work better, but they must fit well. However, cloth masks do not work well. Sometimes they are even worse than not wearing a mask.
Wearing a Mask Isn’t Always Enough
If you spend a lot of time around sick people at work or home, face masks can help protect you against illness. But if you’re not often around sick people, masks might not make a big difference.
A 2012 study found that just wearing a medical mask did not reduce a person’s chances of getting sick, compared to people who didn’t wear one. However, the study found that wearing a face mask as well as washing hands often can lower your risk of catching a cold or the flu by up to 75%.
The More Masks, the Better
A 2018 study suggests that the more there are people who regularly wear face masks, the more masks can help stop the spread of disease. The study found that if 20% of people wear masks during a flu season, only half of the people will suffer from the virus. To almost completely stop the spreading, 80% of all people have to wear masks.
1.Why do most people wear face masks in public?
A.To look fashionable. B.To keep faces warm.
C.To avoid talking to others. D.To prevent diseases.
2.What did the 2012 study find about preventing colds or the flu?
A.Wearing a medical mask alone is very helpful in our daily life.
B.Washing hands often is more important than wearing a mask.
C.Wearing masks and washing hands often can cut the risk by 75%.
D.Wearing a face mask is useless and can increase the risk by 75%.
3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.All kinds of face masks work well.
B.Wearing a mask alone is always enough.
C.Cloth masks are better than not wearing masks.
D.More people wearing masks helps stop disease.
4.What’s the purpose of this passage?
A.To ask readers to wear masks where they are.
B.To tell readers how to wear masks in a smart way.
C.To help readers learn to classify different masks.

When you were a teenager, did you ever feel that your parents just didn’t understand you? You are not alone. This is what we call “growing pains”. But recently, scientists have found that this period of conflict might actually be good for you.
A study from the University of Virginia followed 184 teenagers for over a decade. They recorded the arguments between the teenagers and their parents. The result was surprising. Teenagers who argued properly with their parents, such as discussing disagreements calmly, were more likely to have successful friendships later in life. They learned how to stand up for themselves in the right way.
However, the study also found that teenagers who had no arguments with their parents were often “people pleasers”. They might have difficulty saying “no” to peer pressure (同伴压力) later. On the other hand, teenagers who had very serious, shouting matches with parents often ended up with unstable relationships.
Joseph Allen, the lead researcher, said, “Arguments with parents teach teenagers how to manage conflicts. If they can learn to express their needs clearly without being aggressive (攻击性的), they will be better at dealing with problems in other relationships.”
So, if you sometimes argue with your parents about your grades, your friends, or your career choices, don’t worry too much. It might just be that you are learning important life skills. But remember, the key is to communicate calmly and respect each other. That’s how growing pains turn into gains.
1.What did the study from the University of Virginia find?
A.All arguments are bad for teenagers.
B.Parents should never argue with their children.
C.Mild arguments can help teenagers.
2.What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Teenagers B.Parents C.Friends
3.According to Joseph Allen, what is the right way to argue?
A.To shout to show you are strong.
B.To keep silent to avoid conflict.
C.To express needs clearly and calmly.
4.What is the best title for the passage?
A.How to Win an Argument.
B.Arguments Can Help Us Grow.
C.Learn to Argue with Parents.
【答案】1.C 2.A 3.C 4.B

①A lot of people take up dancing as a hobby after work. In fact, dancing has been seen as one of the best exercises to fight bad feelings in recent years.
②Why is dancing so helpful? Dancing, moving the body to different kinds of music, helps the body produce more endorphin (内啡肽), a chemical (化学物质) that makes people feel relaxed and happy.
③While simply listening to music or doing sports can cheer us up, mixing them together has a stronger effect. In a study, German scientists tested some patients under three conditions: dancing to music, only listening to music, and riding bikes without music. The results showed that the dancing group felt the least sad. This tells us that dancing is more than just moving around—it truly lifts our spirits.
④Dancing can also bring people closer. Social dances like tango and Latin need us to move with others, which improves our sense of social connection according to IBSA, a Swiss scientific organization. Through eye contact, people feel more trust and closeness.
⑤ ▲ Studies show that depression (抑郁症) often has to do with sadness about the past or worries about the future. Dancing helps people focus on the present, connect with their bodies, and free their minds for a while, as reported by Psych Central, a mental health news website. When we dance, we stop overthinking and start feeling. This makes it an excellent way to enjoy the present moment without even trying.
⑥Lauren Helper, an American social worker, says dancing is a helpful way to reduce stress. It can be any form—whether it’s moving alone around the house to a song or going out dancing with friends. “The most important thing is that the movement is fun. You don’t need to be a perfect dancer. Just turn on some music, move your body, and enjoy the moment. That’s the real magic of dance,” she told Psych Central.

A.Attending a concert. B.Talking to a friend. C.Dancing to music.
2.Why do people take up dancing after work?
A.To kill time. B.To learn new skills. C.To fight against bad feelings.

Natural disasters are sudden events caused by nature that can cause great damage to people and the environment. Some common natural disasters include earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, and wildfires.
Earthquakes happen when two pieces of the Earth’s crust suddenly move past each other. They can cause buildings to fall, roads to break, and people to get hurt. It’s important to know what to do during an earthquake: stay away from windows and heavy furniture, get under a strong table or desk, and cover your head.
Floods usually happen when there is too much rain or when rivers overflow. They can cover houses and roads with water, making it hard for people to move around. If a flood is coming, you should move to higher ground as quickly as possible.
Hurricanes are strong storms with heavy rain and strong winds. They can cause a lot of damage to houses and trees. Before a hurricane arrives, people should prepare emergency kits with food, water, and first-aid supplies.

1.文章依次介绍了地震、洪水、飓风、野火四种自然灾害的定义、成因及对应的安全应对建议,选项B“不同种类的自然灾害及安全提示”最能概括全文主旨。
2.根据第一段“Some common natural disasters include earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, and wildfires.”可知,文中提到了地震、洪水、飓风和野火,未提及C选项 Tornadoes (龙卷风)。
3.根据第二段“It’s important to know what to do during an earthquake: ... get under a strong table or desk, and cover your head.”明确提到地震时应躲在坚固的桌子下并护住头部。
4.根据第三段“Floods usually happen when there is too much rain or when rivers overflow.”可知,洪水通常由降雨过多或河流泛滥引起。
5.根据第五段“If you are near a wildfire, you should leave the area immediately...”可知,遇到野火应立即离开该区域。
In many parts of the world, natural disasters happen every year. Some of them are very powerful and cause great damage. So knowing how to stay safe during a disaster is very important.
For example, during an earthquake, you should remember to drop, cover, and hold on. If you are indoors, find a strong table or desk quickly and stay under it until the shaking stops. Don’t run around in a hurry. If you are in bed, just stay there and cover your head with a pillow to protect yourself. You must stay away from windows, tall bookshelves, and heavy furniture (家具) that might fall.
During a thunderstorm, it’s the safest to stay indoors. Avoid using phones, TVs or other electrical devices (设备), and don’t take a shower because lightning can travel through wires and water pipes (管子). If you are unlucky to be outside, never stand under a tall tree. You should crouch down (蹲下) low and keep far away from metal objects.
In a sandstorm, the first thing is to protect your eyes and mouth. Wear goggles and a mask if you have them. If you are driving, pull over safely and stay in the car until the storm passes. Sandstorms can make visibility very poor, so driving in such weather is quite dangerous.
People who live in areas with hurricanes should prepare early. They can board up windows, bring in outdoor furniture, and store enough food and water. When the hurricane arrives, stay in a small, windowless room on the lowest floor of the building.
1.What should you do during an earthquake according to the text?
A.Run outside quickly. B.Stand near a window. C.Stay under a strong table.
2.Why shouldn’t you take a shower during a thunderstorm?
A.Because water is dirty.
B.Because the shower might break.
C.Because lightning may come through pipes.
3.What does “visibility” probably mean in the fourth paragraph?
A.The ability to see clearly. B.The speed of wind. C.The amount of sand.
4.Where should people stay when a hurricane comes?
A.In a big room with many windows on the top floor.
B.In a small room without windows on the lowest floor.
C.Outside near the house to watch the hurricane.
5.What is the main idea of the text?
A.The causes of natural disasters.
B.Different types of natural disasters.
C.Safety tips during natural disasters.

Last summer, Zhang Hua, a Chinese student, was really excited to go to London for a short-term study program. He always dreamed of seeing the famous Big Ben and experiencing life in a foreign country. But there were many interesting cultural differences waiting for him.
One sunny day, Zhang Hua felt like having some fruits, so he went to a local market. He picked up an apple and asked the shopkeeper, “How much is this?” The shopkeeper replied with a big smile, “It’s a pound, love.” Zhang Hua was a bit surprised. In China, “love” is usually only used between close friends or family members. He thought the shopkeeper might be laughing at him. So he didn’t reply very warmly and just said “OK”. The shopkeeper saw Zhang Hua’s strange face and was also a bit confused.
Another time, Zhang Hua was invited to a British classmate’s home for dinner. In China, it’s polite to bring a small gift and be on time, so Zhang Hua did just that. But when he gave the gift to his classmate, the British boy opened it right away in front of him. In China, people usually open gifts when they are alone later. Zhang Hua was a little surprised by this behaviour.
After these experiences, Zhang Hua realized that different countries have different ways of communication and social customs. He decided to learn more about British culture. He read books about British customs, talked with local people, and watched British movies. By the end of his study program, he could communicate with the local people more smoothly and made many good friends.
1.Why was Zhang Hua excited to go to London last summer?
A.He could see his old friends there.
B.He could buy a lot of fruits in London.
C.He could see Big Ben and experience foreign life.
D.He could learn about British culture and customs.
2.How did Zhang Hua feel when the shopkeeper called him “love”?
A.Surprised. B.Angry. C.Happy. D.Embarrassed.
3.What is the main idea of the third paragraph?
A.How British people usually open gifts.
B.The importance of bringing a gift when visiting a British friend.
C.Zhang Hua’s experience of having dinner at a Chinese classmate’s home.
D.The cultural differences about giving and opening gifts between China and Britain.
【答案】1.C 2.A 3.D

Nowadays, people usually shake hands when they meet each other. Do the Chinese always greet others like this? In fact, handshaking was introduced to our country around 100 years ago.
There were several kinds of greeting etiquette in ancient China. Among them the fist and palm salute (拱手礼) was a quite common one, with a history of about 3,000 years. It was first used by people in the Western Zhou Dynasty. In ancient times, if people met a stranger, their hands were always ready to hold something used for fighting. Holding out both hands could make people feel relaxed.
When people meet, men usually use their left hand to hold the right one. It’s believed that people considered (认为) the left as the important side for men in Chinese history. While for women, the important side is the right. So when they give the fist and palm salute, they should put their right hand on top. When someone presents the fist and palm salute to you, you are supposed to do it back as well.
In many wuxia or kung fu TV series and movies, people greet each other with the hold-fist salute, or baoquan in Chinese. The gesture (手势) is that the right hand is made a fist, while the left hand is to cover the right fist. It’s similar to the fist and palm salute, but they are different. Baoquan is widely used among kung fu masters (大师) and students. So, don’t make a mistake.
1.What does the underlined word “etiquette” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Time. B.Need. C.Groups. D.Manners.
2.What is the correct way for a woman to do a fist and palm salute?
A.Make both hands into fists.
B.Put her left hand on top.
C.Put her right hand on the top.
D.Use her left hand to hold the right one.
3.How is baoquan different from the fist and palm salute?
A.It has a longer history. B.It uses only one hand.
C.It is a new way to greet. D.It is used in kung fu culture.
4.In which part of a newspaper can we read this text?
A.Culture Corner. B.Sports News.
C.World History. D.Science Study.
5.Which is the best title for the text?
A.The History of Handshaking
B.Ancient Chinese Greeting Customs
C.Different Western Ways of Greeting
D.The Difference Between Baoquan and Handshaking
【答案】1.D 2.C 3.D 4.A 5.B

2.第三段指出“for women, the important side is the right. So when they give the fist and palm salute, they should put their right hand on top”,因此女性行拱手礼时应将右手放在上方,选项C与此相符。
3.第四段指出“Baoquan is widely used among kung fu masters and students”,因此抱拳礼与拱手礼的不同之处在于它常用于功夫文化中。
Monday mornings were a terrible thing for Tom. They always meant one thing: a new week of school; and Tom hated school. This morning, he thought about how he might avoid going to class. Then an idea came to him.
“Oh! Sid!” he cried, “Oh, it hurts! I think I’m dying, Sid!” Sid, who was already up and dressing for school, stopped what he was doing, and ran over to Tom’s bed.
“What’s wrong, Tom? What is it?”
“Don’t come closer, Sid! You might get sick too! And Sid, I want you to know that I don’t care about the bad things you’ve done to me all these years. So, when I die, you don’t have to feel bad. Oh! The pain! Ohhhh…”
Sid quickly ran downstairs.
“Aunt Polly! Aunt Polly! Tom’s dying! Quick! Help him! Do something!”
Aunt Polly dropped everything and ran up to Tom’s room as fast as she could.
“What is it, Tom? What’s wrong?” she asked with a shaking (颤抖的) voice.
“Oh, Aunt Polly, it’s —”, he had to think for a moment, “It’s my toe (脚趾)! It hurts!”
Aunt Polly fell into a chair next to the bed and started to laugh, then to cry, and then both at the same time.
“Tom! You had me so worried!” she said. “Well, you’re not going to die from a sore toe! Get up and get ready for school!”
“But what about my tooth? I think it’s loose (松动的)!” said Tom.
“That won’t kill you either! But let me take a look. Open your mouth. Well, your tooth is loose. Mary! Bring me some string (线) and a piece of burning wood from the stove!”
“Please, Aunt Polly! Don’t pull out my tooth! I’m feeling much better now. See? I can get up and go to school after all!”
“Sit down, boy! You will go to school, but that tooth is going to be pulled first.”

Helen Cowan had decided to sit in the garden one evening when she heard a loud noise. At first, she thought something had fallen from her recently renovated (翻新的) house. But as she walked to the front of the house, she saw a small crowd gathered on the sidewalk outside.
As she walked towards the crowd, she saw a boy lying in a pool of blood near a crashed motorbike. His leg was almost cut off at the knee. Luckily, when Helen asked about his condition, the young man could still talk, even though he was in great pain.
Helen had knowledge of first aid and had also taken a British Red Cross first aid course. She used her training to make a quick assessment (评估) of the situation. Then she ran back inside her home to get several thick towels to stop the bleeding.
As Helen returned to the scene with the towels, someone from the crowd had called an ambulance, but the young man was still bleeding heavily. “On my return, I could see that the other people were afraid to come forward and help. I used the towel as well as I could to apply pressure to the wound until help arrived,” Helen recalled. Then she successfully managed to control the bleeding and comforted the young man while waiting for help to arrive. Before long, the ambulance team arrived at the scene.
Unluckily, doctors weren’t able to save the man’s leg, but they did save his life and Helen’s actions played a key role. Without the simple but effective first aid skills Helen used, the result of this accident could have been far worse.
“Knowing first aid gave me the confidence to look at the situation, to stay calm, and most importantly, to step forward to help in an emergency situation when others wouldn’t. I feel so happy that my first aid knowledge helped me save a stranger’s life,” Helen said.
1.Where did Helen see the boy?
A.At a crossroads. B.Behind her garden. C.In front of her house.
2.Why did Helen dare to deal with the situation?
A.She used to be a doctor.
B.She had been trained to do that.
C.She had dealt with this before.
3.Helen was quite ________ when she gave the young man first aid.
A.calm B.worried C.helpless

D.To give readers advice on choosing the right masks.
1.What can help you the most when you are sad according to the study?
A.Attending a concert. B.Talking to a friend. C.Dancing to music.
2.Why do people take up dancing after work?
A.To kill time. B.To learn new skills. C.To fight against bad feelings.
3.Which sentence can be put in the “ ▲ ” in the fifth paragraph?

Wildfires are large fires that burn in forests or grasslands. They can spread quickly because of strong winds. If you are near a wildfire, you should leave the area immediately and follow the instructions of firefighters.

A.Stay and watch the fire.
B.Try to put out the fire yourself.
C.Leave the area at once.

“What’s wrong, Tom? What is it?”
“Don’t come closer, Sid! You might get sick too! And Sid, I want you to know that I don’t care about the bad things you’ve done to me all these years. So, when I die, you don’t have to feel bad. Oh! The pain! Ohhhh…”
