Standing in the yard, 12-year-old Cindy Keele saw the worry on her mother’s face, when the world suddenly fell quiet, leaving the air hot and heavy over Lubbock, Texas.
“Get in and put on your shoes,” her mother said calmly. “We have to go to the storm cellar (地窖).”
The girl ran inside. As soon as the door closed behind her, a softball-sized stone damaged the kitchen window and three more broke through the back wall. And then came the unmistakable, deafening sound of an approaching tornado.
“They say a tornado sounds like a train,” Keele recalls 51 years later. “But I disagree. Maybe more like a thousand trains. It’s a sound you never forget but can never describe.”
But getting herself and her three kids to safety was no simple matter — the shelter was at the opposite end of the park. If they didn’t drive, they’d never make it.
“My mother was a small woman, but suddenly she seemed to have superhuman strength,” Keele says, her voice still wavering so many years later. “She threw my four-year-old sister into the back seat. Then she went back to the house to get my nine-year-old brother. As she got to the car, he just started flying up into the air. My mother grabbed him by his legs, as if he were a kite, and pulled him back down.”
At last, everyone was in the car and her next clear memory was about what happened inside the shelter. “There were 60 persons there,” Keele says. “The sound outside was deafening. For a moment, the metal door, which was held tight with two big slide locks at the top and bottom, seemed to be forced open by the wind. Eight men rushed to the door and tried their best to keep it from flying open.”
After what seemed like a century, the wind finally stopped. When they came out, they found that everything was gone.
“My mother started running straight for our street. A man stopped her — he’d just come from there and he knew what she would find,” adds Keele. “I’d never seen my mom cry. But she broke down that day.”
4. How old is Cindy Keele when she tells this story?
A. 63. B. 51. C. 39. D. 12.
5. What does the underlined word “wavering” in paragraph 6 probably mean?
A. Hurting. B. Weakening. C. Shaking. D. Deafening.
6. What does the seventh paragraph focus on?
A. The bravery of the men. B. Damages caused by the storm.
C. The trouble with the door. D. Things happening in the cellar.
7. What can we say about Keele’s mother?
A. She cried a lot.
B. She was a cool-headed woman.
C. She was very tall.
D. She seemed to be cold-hearted.
C
As evening fell, five people moved nervously around a baby elephant. All the science, all the ideas leading up to this moment, checked out. But now, it was a question of practice: Would this baby elephant like the newly developed baby formula (配方)? Would her body react well to it?
The five people, keepers at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, northern Kenya’s only elephant orphanage (孤儿院), held one another’s hands. They hoped that she would be healthy. As baby Sera gulped down one bottle after another, they smiled with relief. And in the days that followed, the weak two-week-old put on weight and had the strength to play with the other baby elephants at the orphanage.
The keepers celebrated the breakthrough. The formula was simple and the main ingredient (成分) of the new formula was easy to get: goat milk.
The team had been thinking about how to improve their milk recipe for a long time, says Katie Rowe, co-founder of Reteti, in the community-owned Namunyak Conservancy. The orphanage had used human baby formula since its establishment in 2016, but costs were high, cans had to be bought from foreign countries, and ingredients weren’t always natural. “I was looking at the ingredients, believing there were better choices out there,” Rowe says.
The new formula has also been a success for the Samburu community, which sells goat milk to the orphanage. Each morning, Stamen Lemajong’s family and others travel along tree-lined roads to sell more than 150 liters of milk to the orphanage. “We use the money from selling goat milk for everything the kids to school, paying hospital bills,” Lemajong says. “And in times of hardship last year, it has been a huge help. Then we could even buy food with it.”
8. What were the five people doing toward the evening?
A. Examining a newborn baby. B. Treating an ill elephant.
C. Having a science lesson. D. Testing a new formula.
9. What is one reason why the team chose goat milk?
A. It is less expensive. B. It tastes more delicious.
C. It has safer ingredients. D. It is more popular worldwide.
10. What can we infer from Paragraph 5 about the new formula?
A. It brings local people huge benefits.
B. It has to deal with a lot of challenges.
C. It lets kids realize the value of hard work.
D. It makes the Samburu community famous.
11. In which part of a newspaper can we probably find this text?
A. Sports. B. Culture. C. Society. D. Education.
D
The world of work is always changing, and the skills needed for the future are changing accordingly. A recent study by the World Economic Forum suggests that by 2026, analytical thinking, creativity, and flexibility will be among the most important skills for employees. This is largely due to the rise of automation (自动化) and artificial intelligence (AI), which are taking over routine, repetitive tasks. Rather than making humans outdated, this technological change is freeing us to focus on tasks that require uniquely human qualities like emotional intelligence, critical thinking, and innovation.
AI systems are capable of processing entire books and articles to produce brief summaries or analyses. For instance, students may use AI tools to obtain quick overviews of novels instead of reading the complete works. While such practices are not entirely new — study guides have existed for decades — generative AI offers more choices.
Current applications allow users to interact with books through AI-driven platforms. These tools can provide detailed comparisons, answer questions, and simulate (模拟) discussions about texts without requiring users to read the texts. This efficiency, however, may come at a cost. Relying on AI for reading tasks could reduce opportunities for critical engagement and personal interpretation. Data trends indicate a decline in reading engagement among young people. Recent surveys show that less than 40% of fourth-grade students in the United States read daily for pleasure. Similarly, youth reading rates in other developed countries have also experienced noticeable declines. At higher education levels, students are increasingly avoiding longer reading assignments, and some instructors have reduced reading requirements accordingly.
Experts also pointed out that overreliance on technology may dilute independent thinking skills. Early studies suggest that users who frequently depend on AI for tasks like writing or analysis report lower confidence in their own cognitive (认知的) abilities.
While AI provides valuable tools for efficient information processing, balanced use is necessary. Maintaining active reading habits remains important for keeping critical literacy skills and appreciating the depth of literary works.
12. What can be inferred about automation and AI?
A. They’re not removing work but reshaping it. B. They’re replacing human workers gradually.
C. They’re creating a greater demand for routine jobs. D. They’re more important than emotional intelligence.
13. How do current AI-driven platforms help users with books?
A. They improve students’ reading skills greatly.
B. They let users finish reading tasks without any effort.
C. They provide brief summaries and intelligent comparisons.
D. They help teachers give reading tasks in class more quickly.
14. What does the underlined word “dilute” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Strengthen. B. Weaken. C. Abandon. D. Guide.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. AI: A Two-Sided Tool in Work and Study B. Reading Habits and Young People’s Future
C. Automation and Its Influence on Job Skills D. AI: A Useful Tool for Students’ Daily Study

Lily is a high school English teacher who always wears a bright smile, looking fashionable and open-minded to all her students. She is extremely dedicated to her teaching job, taking every class seriously and devoting all her energy to helping students make progress. Though she sometimes meets small troubles with a few shy or naughty students, she always tries her best to get along well with the whole class and wins their love and respect.
In her class there is a boy named William, who is a little overweight and always keeps quiet in the corner. He is not active in his studies and seldom finishes his homework on time. He has never raised his hand to answer questions or talked to Lily actively after class, so Lily knows little about this silent boy, only regarding him as a lazy and unmotivated student.
One evening, after two straight evening classes, Lily was about to rush to another class for her next task. She needed to hand out exercise books to students quickly, so she called several students who had nothing to do at hand for help. Some students stood up at once and walked to the platform happily. However, when Lily called William’s name in a gentle voice, he just sat still without any response, staring at his desk as if he had heard nothing.
Thinking he might not catch her words clearly, Lily called his name again a little louder, but William still kept silent and never lifted his head. Gradually, Lily felt confused and a little annoyed. She raised her voice and called his name for the third time sharply, asking him to come to help hand out the exercise books. This time, every student in the class could hear her words clearly, but William remained motionless in his seat, completely ignoring her request.
Lily’s face turned red immediately, filled with strong anger and deep embarrassment. The whole classroom fell into a strange and awkward silence. Just at that moment, a kind girl in the class stood up quickly and volunteered to hand out the books instead, easing the tense atmosphere a little. But Lily was still filled with anger, standing on the platform frozen for a while. She thought William was extremely selfish and rude for defying her order on purpose. With no time to deal with it then, she left the classroom with great anger, wondering angrily whether she should punish him severely or talk to him the next day.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

The next day, William came to Lily’s office hesitantly before the first class began. He lowered his head deeply, his hands twisting uneasily, and apologized to Lily in a soft, trembling voice. He explained that his father had been working abroad all year, and his mother had fallen seriously ill the previous night, so he had stayed up all night taking care of her alone. Exhausted and dizzy, he had suffered temporary hearing loss in one ear and truly didn’t hear her calls.
Hearing William’s sincere explanation, Lily’s anger faded away in no time. She felt deeply guilty for misunderstanding the quiet boy and patted his shoulder gently with a warm smile. She comforted him and said there was no need to feel sorry, promising to help him make up for the missed lessons after class. Touched by Lily’s kindness, William raised his head with tears in his eyes. From then on, he became more active in class and gradually opened his heart.
