His book The Travel Notes of Xu Xiake, not only encouraged a love of travelling among Chinese people but provided important scientific information about the country’s land and geography. Born into a wealthy Jiangyin family, Xu became interested in books about different places at an early age and wanted to travel. When he was 18, however, Xu’s father died and so, it seemed impossible for his travelling dreams. He now was responsible for the family farm and taking care of his 60-year-old mother as tradition required. But his mother had different ideas. Understanding her son's love of travel and valuing the knowledge he could get from such experiences, this modern-thinking woman refused to keep her son at home. She agreed that Xu could travel for three months every year, when there was less farm work. So at the age of twenty and with his mother’s support, Xu set off for the first time, leaving behind not only his mother but his new wife as well. He would repeat this goodbye each year for most of the next 30 years. During this time, he travelled throughout the Ming kingdom, carefully studying the lands he passed through and recording his experiences and many discoveries in a diary. This diary, which once had over 500,000 words, would eventually become The Travel Notes of Xu Xiake. Although rich, Xu avoided comfortable travel, preferring to go almost everywhere on foot. This way he could research the environment in detail and get a true picture of the natural world. Many of his trips were to hard-to-reach mountain areas, and through wild forests where few people lived. His willingness to face hardships came at a cost, however. Progress was slow and tiring and he was frequently sick, robbed and beaten during his journeys. Sadly Xu became seriously ill during his last and longest journey, a 4-year trip through the Southwest of China. He died in 1641, soon after returning to his hometown for the last time. When his diary was finally printed years after his death, much of it had been destroyed or lost. Although incomplete, it still made Xu a travelling legend around the world. 27. What is the passage mainly about? A. The general details of Xu Xiake’s life story. B. The difficulties Xu Xiake faced in his travels. C. The important discoveries made by Xu Xiake. D. The influence of Xu’s book The Travel Notes of Xu Xiake. 28. Why did Xu prefer walking during his travels? A. It gave him the chance to meet different kinds of people. B. It helped him to save money and travel for a longer time. C. It allowed him to see and study the environment in detail. D. It was the only way to reach the places he was interested in. 29. What is true about Xu’s book The Travel Notes of Xu Xiake? A. It was only made public after Xu died. B. It made Xu very famous during his lifetime. C. It was the first travel book ever written in China. D. It was mainly about the different people of China. 30. What is the correct order for the following events from Xu’s life? a. He went on his first journey. b. His book was finally printed. c. He returned to his hometown for the last time. d. He developed an interest in books about other places. e. He started managing the family farm after his father died. A. a-e-d-c-b B. d-e-a-c-b C. d-e-a-b-c D. e-d-a-b-c 【答案】27. A 28. C 29. A 30. 【28题详解】 根据第五段“Xu avoided comfortable travel, preferring to go almost everywhere on foot. This way he could research the environment in detail and get a true picture of the natural world.” 【29题详解】 根据最后一段“When his diary was finally printed years after his death...” 他从小对地理书籍产生兴趣(第二段“Xu became interested in books about different places at an early age”);e. 父亲去世后他开始管理家庭农场(第二段“When he was 18, however, Xu’s father died... he now was responsible for the family farm”);a. 20岁时第一次旅行(第四段“at the age of twenty... People everywhere have told stories to amuse, to teach, to remember, and just to pass the time. People started telling stories long before writing was invented. ____31____ But people all over the world still tell one another stories out loud. A person who can tell a good story nearly always finds listeners. Before people developed writing, storytelling was the most important way to pass along information. Anything a culture wanted to protect— its beliefs, its history, and its traditions—had to be told out loud. Each generation would tell the culture’s stories to the next. ____32____ Knowledge passed on in this method is called the spoken tradition. Even cultures that know how to write still pass along some information in this way. ____33____ In other cultures only special storytellers were trusted to do this important job. A culture’s best storytellers had good memories. They could also make the stories very interesting, so people would listen and remember them. Sometimes people would sing the stories or tell them in the form of poems. ____34____ However, stories told aloud change over time as different people tell them. A storyteller might change a story in order to make it better. Or a teller may simply not remember all the details of a story. Unlike written stories, the spoken tradition is not created by any one person. ____35____ Sometimes the stories are collected and written down long after they have been created. A. In this way the stories were passed along. B. In some cultures everyone would pass along the stories. C. Songs and poems can both make stories easier to remember. D. Instead, a whole culture helps shape the changing stories throughout history. E. Today stories are also written down in books and acted out in movies, TV shows, and plays. F. How are the stories passed along? G. What makes stories easier to remember? 【答案】31. E 32. A 33. B 34. C 35. D 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了讲故事的历史渊源、在文字发明前的信息传递作用、不同文化中讲故事的方式以及口头传统的特点。 【31题详解】 第一段指出“People started telling stories long before writing was invented.”,说明故事在文字出现之前就已存在,紧接着应说明文字出现后故事的传播方式。E项“Today stories are also written down in books and acted out in movies, TV shows, and plays.”中“also”承接上文,形成古今对比。 【32题详解】 第二段指出“Each generation would tell the culture’s stories to the next.”,说明代代相传的方式,后文“Knowledge passed on in this method is called the spoken tradition.”是对此方式的总结。A项“In this way the stories were passed along.”中的“In this way”指代前句的传承方式,起到承上启下的作用。 【33题详解】 第三段前两句分别描述不同文化中故事传承的方式。第一句为“In other cultures only special storytellers were trusted to do this important job.”,前文应与之形成对比。B项“In some cultures everyone would pass along the stories.”与“In other cultures...”构成“some...other...”的对比结构。 【34题详解】 第三段指出“Sometimes people would sing the stories or tell them in the form of poems.”,说明歌谣和诗歌的形式使故事更容易被记住。C项“Songs and poems can both make stories easier to remember.”中的“Songs and poems”指代前句内容,“easier to remember”解释了采用这些形式的原因。 【35题详解】 第四段指出“Unlike written stories, the spoken tradition is not created by any one person.”,说明口头传统并非由单一个人创作。D项“Instead, a whole culture helps shape the changing stories throughout history.”中的“Instead”与上文形成转折,“a whole culture”与“any one person”形成对比,解释了口头传统的集体创作特点。 V.完成句子:根据所给汉语意思,用单词或短语完成下列英文句子。(共5小题,计10分) 36. 当大地开始晃动时,要保持镇静。 _______________ as the earth begins to shake and move. 【答案】Stay calm##Keep calm 【解析】 【详解】根据中文“要保持镇静”,可知需要翻译“保持镇静”这一含义,常用短语为keep calm或stay calm;该句为祈使句,用于发出指令或建议,因此句子应以动词原形开头;空缺处位于句首,单词的首字母必须大写。 37. 雨伞将保护你不被雨淋。 An umbrella will ________________. 【答案】protect you from the rain 【解析】 【详解】原句中“保护你不被雨淋”是关键词,“保护……免受……”的固定搭配是protect...from...。句中will是情态动词,表示将来时,后接动词原形protect。“你”作宾语译为you,“雨”译为the rain。 38. 你们应该尽快离开这个地方。 You should leave this place ________________. 【答案】as fast as you can 【解析】 【详解】原句中的“尽快”是关键词。表示“尽快”的短语是as fast as you can,该短语在句中作状语,修饰动词leave,表示动作的紧迫性。 39. 她想尽可能远地搬离这里。 She wants to move as ________ here as possible. 【答案】far away from 【解析】 【详解】原句关键词为“远……离……”,用far away from表示。句子结构“as+形容词/副词+as possible”意为“尽可能……”。 40. 我想搬家。请留心有没有公寓出租,好吗? I want to move. ________ ________ ________ ________ for an apartment for rent, will you? 【答案】 ①. Keep ②. an ③. eye ④. out 【解析】 【详解】原句中“请留心”是关键词,表示“留心”的短语是keep an eye out for。句末的反意疑问句部分为“will you?”,表明前半句是祈使句,因此句首动词需使用原形。题干中已有介词for,句首需首字母大写,故填Keep;an;eye;out。 Ⅵ.短文填空:(共10小题,计10分) 用方框中所给单词的适当形式填空,使短文完整正确。(每个单词限用一次,每空限填一个单词。) safe act off direct soldier energy on involve two sink Wolf Warriors Ⅱ is a war film ____41____ by Wu Jing. But the easiest and cheapest way to improve your health is just to sleep eight hours or more every night. The general sleeping rule is that the younger you are, the longer sleep you need. But regardless of (不管) age, some people need to sleep more while for some a few hours is enough. The problem with sleep is that more and more people in the world are not sleeping enough. According to the World Health Organization, over half the people in the world may be sleep-deprived. Having less sleep not only makes people feel tired but also causes accidents. In the United States alone, sleepy drivers cause at least 100,000 traffic accidents a year. Also sleep problems can cause medical problems such as high blood pressure (血压). Why are so many people sleep-deprived? Part of the reasons may be cultural. In the American culture, people put a higher value on work than on sleep. In fact, people who sleep a lot are usually seen as “lazy”. Also, you can sometimes hear some people say proudly that they don’t have much time to sleep. They only sleep four or five hours a night. It seems that the less you sleep, the more work you’ll do. How do we teach these people to learn the value of sleep? Perhaps they may listen to the advice of Dr. James Maas, an expert (专家) in sleep. He says,“Sleep is like a credit (信用) card. When you sleep less, you are only borrowing time. You always have to pay it back. The more hours you don't sleep, the more hours you should sleep to ‘pay back’ the hours on your ‘sleep credit card’.” For those who value work more than sleep, they should listen to what a famous person once said, “Don’t think you will be doing less work because you sleep during the night. That is a foolish (愚蠢的) idea which is held by people who have no imagination. You will be able to do more.” 51. According to the writer, what’s the easiest and cheapest way to improve health? _________________________________________________ 52. According to Dr. James Maas, what is sleep like? _________________________________________________ 54. What do the words of the famous person mean in Paragraph 5? _________________________________________________ 55. What is the best title of the passage? _________________________________________________ 【答案】51. Sleep eight hours or more every night. 52. Having less sleep. 53. A credit card. 54. Sleeping during the night is helpful. 55. The Value of Sleep. 【解析】 【导语】本文主要讨论了睡眠对健康的重要性、睡眠不足的危害、文化中轻视睡眠的现象,以及专家对睡眠价值的看法。 【51题详解】 根据第一段“But the easiest and cheapest way to improve your health is just to sleep eight hours or more every night.”可知,改善健康最简单、最便宜的方法就是每晚睡八小时或更长时间。 【52题详解】 根据第二段“Having less sleep not only makes people feel tired...”可知,“sleep-deprived”指的是“睡眠不足的”。 【53题详解】 根据第四段“Sleep is like a credit card.”可知,James Maas博士认为睡眠就像信用卡。 【54题详解】 根据第五段“Don’t think you will be doing less work because you sleep during the night... You will be able to do more.”可知,这位名人的话意思是:晚上睡觉不会减少工作量,反而有助于做得更多,也就是说晚上睡觉是有帮助的。 【55题详解】 文章主要围绕睡眠对健康的重要性、睡眠不足的危害以及人们对睡眠的误解展开讨论,因此最佳标题为“The Value of Sleep”。 Ⅷ.补全对话(共5 小题,计5分) 根据下面对话中的情境,在每个空白处填入一个适当的语句,使对话恢复完整。 M: Good morning, doctor! C They say that “travel is the best teacher” and there is no better example of this idea than the Ming dynasty travel writer and geographer Xu Xiake (1587-1641). D. It helped him to save money and travel for a longer time. C. It allowed him to see and study the environment in detail. D. It was the only way to reach the places he was interested in. 29.
