In recent years, an increasing number of foreign students have adopted Chinese opera, not just as tourists but through in-depth learning experiences. Thirty international students spent nearly a month at the Shanghai Theatre Academy, attending a summer course on traditional Chinese operas, where they explored this engaging art form. The students, including culture enthusiasts and first-time visitors, were introduced to the unique vocal (发声的) techniques and purposeful movements that distinguish Chinese operas from European theatre traditions. They not only practiced the technical aspects but also gained an appreciation for the cultural significance of each performance.
Among the participants was Daria Oganesova, a history student from St. Petersburg State University, who found the operatic skills challenging yet interesting. Despite her background in Chinese history, this was her first hands-on experience with traditional operas. Kayla Hamilton-Dick, an exchange student from New Zealand, described Chinese operas as “deep and complex”, pushing her to practice the movements diligently after class. Though the learning process was difficult, all the students successfully completed their “graduation performances”, demonstrating their hard work and growth.
Li Qiuping, an opera artist with nearly 50 years of teaching experience, shared valuable insights with the students, explaining the historical and emotional context of the operas. For example, before teaching “Ode to Pear Flowers”, she explained the heartbreaking story of Yang Guifei, a beloved wife of Emperor Xuanzong, which helped students better convey the emotions in their performances.
The course, which has been running since 2011, not only focused on opera but also introduced other traditional Chinese arts, such as puppet (木偶) shows. These diverse experiences left a lasting effect on the students, many of whom later became cultural representatives, writing books or producing documentaries about Chinese operas. Zhang Yunlei, a teacher at the academy, emphasized the importance of allowing foreigners to experience Chinese culture firsthand, as their viewpoints can more effectively promote it to the world, encouraging cultural exchange and shared understanding.
4. How were the foreign students in the course?
A. Experienced. B. Passionate. C. Casual. D. Hesitant.
5. What can we learn about Kayla Hamilton-Dick from the second paragraph?
A. She possessed knowledge of Chinese history.

6. What did Li Qiuping do for the students in the course?
A. She taught Chinese language. B. She organized cultural events.
C. She explained relevant history. D. She designed special costumes.
7. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the passage?
A. To recommend an opera artist. B. To highlight students’ challenges.

Random destinations give travelers a thrill
“旅行盲盒”:邂逅未知的惊喜
Most people plan their vacations well in advance, including where they’re going. But some like the thrill of not knowing where they will end up.
Earlier this year, mystery box travel purchases surged (激增) among China’s young people. Usually, travelers buy a mystery box at a low price — usually 100 or 200 yuan — and then receive several destination options to choose from. After the destination is decided, their trip begins.
A citizen surnamed (姓) Cheng is eager to go on a mystery box trip, stating that traveling alone usually costs too much and that too many people don’t know where to go. “However, the mystery box directly assigns me a few destinations, which is wonderful and cheap,” Cheng told Haibao News, a media outlet based in Shandong province.
Liao Liangyu, 16, has turned his eagerness to go on a mystery box trip into reality. Months ago, Liao traveled with a couple of friends to Changsha in Hunan province.
With its reputation of a super hyped-up (被炒作的) internet sensation (“网红地”), Liao had a change of opinion after seeing Changsha for himself.
“My biggest discovery is that Changsha is a city full of contrasts,” Liao told China Daily. “You can see skyscrapers (摩天大楼) and old houses in rundown alleys (破旧小巷) in the same view.”
Travel mystery boxes bring excitement to many less popular destinations. For example, Dehong city in Yunnan, despite its scenic views, previously received few visitors due to a lack of promotion. But after it was included as a mystery box travel destination, Dehong has since got lots of attention.
But even so, a large number of people feel disappointed with travel mystery boxes because they can encounter (遇到) many problems after purchasing one, such as poor travel times and sudden flight cancellations (取消). Sun Weili from Ctrip suggested in an interview with Haibao News that visitors should choose reliable platforms and sign contracts (合同) to guarantee their trip specifications (具体要求).
8. What is the appeal of mystery box travel, according to the text?
A. Traveling with like-minded strangers.
B. Unplanned traveling at a low cost.
C. Fixed routes to choose from.
D. Popular destinations to visit.
9. How did Liao Liangyu feel about his mystery box trip?
A He regretted traveling with his friends.
B. He thought Changsha’s fame was unreasonable.
C. He disliked the unpredictability.
D. He discovered something unexpected.
10. How do travel mystery boxes affect places like Dehong city?
A. They help increase their popularity.
B. They often cause overcrowding.
C. They lead to environmental problems.
D. They enrich local people’s lives.
11. What is the main topic of the last paragraph?
A. Reliable platforms to buy travel mystery boxes.
B. Various mystery box travel options available.
C. Potential issues related to travel mystery boxes.
D. Mystery box travel regulations and policies.

From stealing chips to swallowing whole starfish, gulls are known for their greedy appetites. However, one scientist was so shocked to see pictures on social media of gulls eating “strange and wonderful things” that she launched a citizen science project to study their shifting diets. “By studying gulls’ diet, we can learn more about their behavior, their role in ecosystems and the pressures they face in a changing world,” Dr Alice Risely said.
UK seabirds face threats from warming oceans, overfishing and avian flu, with several species on the UK red list of conservation concern. Some gulls are coming to live closer to people, adding human leftovers to their natural menu of fish, crabs, starfish and earthworms. The birds may be flocking to urban areas to find food to feed their babies during the breeding season, switching back to a natural diet once their youngsters have fledged (能飞翔的). Alternatively, gulls may be relying on human leftovers for much of the year as the natural food supply drops.
One particularly striking photograph shows a gull eating a baby bird. It was taken by scientist Samuel Schmidt on a trip to the Farne Islands. Getting more information on what gulls are eating — in proximity to people and as the climate changes — “could be very enlightening”, he said. “The gull wasn’t malicious (恶意的); it was just hungry,” he added. Gulls are known to eat other birds, including pigeons.
“The fact is we just really don’t know — there is very little data,” said Dr Risely. “This is why we wanted to exploit this resource of online photos to try and help us understand what the gulls are eating, and if there are any patterns we can find.” The UK is known for its huge habitats of seabirds nesting on cliffs. Now, gulls are in trouble in their natural spaces — and some species are seeking habitats in coastal cities. There is very little data on the number of urban gulls — but natural populations are regularly monitored, showing big declines.
12. What inspired Risely to start a citizen science project?
A. Her interest in seabirds. B. An online post about gulls.
C. The changing diets of seabirds. D. The strange gulls with great appetites.
13. What happened to the gulls in Paragraph 2?
A. They have a preference for urban life. B. They entered the list of protected birds.
C. They have enough natural food. D. They depend more on humans for food.
14. How did Samuel think of a gull eating a bird?
A. Destructive. B. Harmful. C. Normal. D. Unusual.
15. What can we learn from Risely’s words in the last paragraph?
A. Most seabirds in the UK are endangered. B. Photos on the Internet aren’t believable.
C. Urban gulls deserve more protection. D. More information on gulls is needed.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

Show someone your support
Sometimes people who are close to us go through difficult times. That could include coping with an illness or other big changes in their life. ____16____ Just wanting to support them is a good place to begin. Here are some ideas to consider.
Let them know you care.
Your friend or family member may feel like talking about what they are going through, or they may not. It’s always appropriate to let them know you care and will be there for them. ____17____ Making a video expressing your love for them is another option. You could also ask them if it would be OK to bring or mail them a baked treat, or you might put together a care package.
Spend time together
____18____ If possible, ask if they would like to do something together, like take a walk, watch a movie, or do a puzzle. If it’s a family member who lives far away, you can ask if they want to video chat or talk on the phone. You could also send them photos of your day to help them feel connected.
____19____
People who care about you likely want you to keep your daily routine as much as possible, even while they are going through something challenging. But you might also be able to step in when possible, with tasks like doing the dishes, looking after a pet, or ironing clothes.
Pay attention to their needs and wants.
This is often the hardest, but most important way to show you care. Even if they are just telling you a story about something silly that happened at the supermarket, it’s important that you respond appropriately. If you ignore them when it comes to simple things, they won’t feel that you care about them.____20____
A. Help out with small tasks.
B. Stick to your daily routine.
C. Your presence alone can be comforting.
D. Even small gestures can mean a lot to others.
E. You could show your care by making a card with a note inside.

Kate walked hand-in-hand with her daughter, Holly, toward the restaurant, the cool evening air filled with the sound of excitement. Holly’s favorite restaurant wasn’t far, and her little feet almost skipped with joy as she looked up at her mother, her eyes wide with disbelief.
“You can order whatever you want, sweetie,” Kate said, her heart filling with happiness at being able to give her daughter this special treat. Being a single mother had been difficult for Kate ever since her husband passed away. Balancing a job that hardly paid enough while taking care of Holly had been a daily struggle. Money was always tight, but Kate was determined to make sure Holly never felt like she was missing out on love or happiness. She had been saving up for this dinner for a period of time, wishing to give Holly a birthday she would always remember.
As they stepped into the restaurant, Holly’s excitement was nearly impossible to contain. She rushed ahead to the table and looked through the menu eagerly. Holly’s small hands flipped through the menu, trying to decide between all the delicious options. But when Kate looked at the price on the menu, her thoughts raced, calculating the little money she had left after saving for months just to make this night special for Holly.
Thinking of her financial struggles, Kate stepped aside to the counter, where a waiter was serving a graceful lady wearing a white coat. With fear and embarrassment, Kate tried to keep her voice down and asked the waiter if they had any discount for the dinner.
“Ma’ am, we don’t have any discount,” the waiter said softly, his voice low but firm. And then he continued serving the woman. Hearing that, Kate returned to the table and her heart was heavy, forcing a smile for Holly, who was still joyfully choosing her favorite food, unaware of the concern inside her mother.

“You can see skyscrapers (摩天大楼) and old houses in rundown alleys (破旧的小巷) in the same view.”
Travel mystery boxes bring excitement to many less popular destinations. For example Dehong city in Yunnan, despite its scenic views, previously received few visitors due to a lack of promotion.
B Unplanned traveling at a low cost.
C. Fixed routes to choose from.
D. Popular destinations to visit.
9. How did Liao Liangyu feel about his mystery box trip?
A. He regretted traveling with his friends.
A Reliable platforms to buy travel mystery boxes.

【答案】12. B 13. D 14. C 15. D

Some gulls are coming to live closer to people, adding human leftovers to their natural menu of fish, crabs, starfish and earthworms. The birds may be flocking to urban areas to find food to feed their babies during the breeding season, switching back to a natural diet once their youngsters have fledged. Alternatively, gulls may be relying on human leftovers for much of the year as the natural food supply drops.(英国的海鸟正面临着来自海洋变暖、过度捕捞以及禽流感等多重威胁,其中一些物种已被列入英国的濒危保护物种名单。
根据第三段““The gull wasn’t malicious; it was just hungry,” he added. Gulls are known to eat other birds, including pigeons.(“那只海鸥并非有意作恶;它只是饿了而已。”他补充道。众所周知,海鸥会捕食其他鸟类,包括鸽子)”可知,Samuel认为海鸥吃鸟是正常的,故选C。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段““The fact is we just really don’t know — there is very little data,” said Dr Risely. “This is why we wanted to exploit this resource of online photos to try and help us understand what the gulls are eating, and if there are any patterns we can find.”(Risely博士表示:“事实是,我们确实不清楚具体情况——相关数据非常少。

Let them know you care.

【答案】
When Holly finished her meal, Kate went to pay the bill. Her hands trembled slightly as she handed the waiter the cash she had saved for months. The waiter took the money, but before he could give her the change, a gentle voice behind her said, “Excuse me, ma’am.” Kate turned around to see the woman in the white coat smiling at her. “I couldn’t help but overhear your conversation earlier,” the woman said. “I’d like to pay for your dinner as a birthday gift for your daughter.” Kate was too shocked to speak, her eyes filling with tears. “Thank you so much,” she managed to say. “You have no idea how much this means to us.”
Without hesitating, Kate rushed outside in search of the woman. She found her standing on the sidewalk, waiting for a taxi. “Wait!” Kate called out, running toward her. “I need to thank you properly.” The woman turned around and smiled. “It was my pleasure,” she said. “I remember what it’s like to be a single mother struggling to make ends meet. I hope this helps make your daughter’s birthday a little more special.” Kate hugged the woman tightly, grateful for her kindness. As she watched the taxi drive away, Kate realized that sometimes a small act of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s life. She vowed to pay it forward someday, just like the woman in the white coat had done for her.
