I have worked as a keeper at the National Zoo, Paris for 11 years. Spot and Stripe are the first tiger cubs that have ever been born here. Globally, a third of Sumatran cubs in zoos don't make it to adulthood, so I decided to give them round-the-clock care at home.
I've got two children—the younger one, Kynan, was extremely happy about the tigers arriving - but all of us really looked forward to being part of their lives and watching them grow. I wasn't worried about bringing them into my home with my wife and kids. These were cubs. They weighed about 2.5 kg and were so small that there was absolutely no risk.
As they grew more mobile, we let them move freely around the house during the day, but when we were asleep we had to contain them in a large room, otherwise they'd get up to mischief. We'd come down in the morning to find they'd turned the room upside down, and left it looking like a zoo.
Things quickly got very intense due to the huge amount of energy required to look after them. There were some tough times and I just felt extremely tired. I was grateful that my family was there to help. We had to have a bit of a production line going, making up “tiger milk”, washing baby bottles, and cleaning the floors.
When Spot and Stripe were four months old, they were learning how to open doors and jump fences, and we knew it really was time for them to go. It was hard for us to finally part with them. For the first few days, Kynan was always a bit disappointed that the cubs weren't there.
I'm not sad about it. I'm hands-on with them every day at the zoo, and I do look back very fondly on the time that we had them.
4. Why did the author bring the tiger cubs home?
A. To ensure their survival. B. To observe their differences.
C. To teach them life skills. D. To let them play with his kids.
5. What do the underlined words “get up to mischief” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Behave badly. B. Lose their way. C. Sleep soundly. D. Miss their mom.
6. What did the author think of raising the tiger cubs at home?
A. Boring. B. Tiring. C. Costly. D. Risky.
7. Why did the author decide to send Spot and Stripe back to the zoo?
A. They frightened the children. B. They became difficult to contain.
C. They annoyed the neighbours. D. They started fighting each other.
C
Second place is just the first loser. While the competitive spirit may be as natural as breathing air, it doesn’t always lead to human flourishing and can create misery. Fortunately, there is a formula to solve this problem: instead of always going for gold, shoot for the bronze.
Though second place may be the first loser, third place can be the real winner regarding happiness and longevity. In a 1995 study, scholars systematically coded the emotional reactions of silver and bronze medalists in the 1992 Summer Olympic Games. Using slow-motion footage captured both immediately after their events and later on the awards podium (领奖台), researchers found the bronze winners appeared consistently happier on average than the silver medalists. Over 80% of bronze medalists exhibited genuine smiles, a figure that was nearly double that observed among silver medalists. Moreover, every bronze medalist’s smile lasted longer than the average smile observed among the silver medalists.
More recent research has looked at the life span of all three medalist categories. A 2018 study tracked the average longevity of those representing the U.S. in the Olympic Games from 1904 to 1936 and found that the athlete whose best performance was silver lived to 72. Gold medalists beat this by four years, living to 76. But first prize in longevity went to the bronze medalists, who lived to 78.
The study had a handy explanation for this discrepancy: “Unsatisfactory competition outcomes may adversely affect health.” In other words, silver medalists see themselves as the first loser because they look up to the top step and compare themselves only with the gold medalists, whereas the bronze winners compare themselves favorably with all the others who never made it onto the podium at all. This theory shows the difference between upward and downward social comparison. When we compare ourselves with those who have more money, power, or achievements, we often feel like, well, losers. It tends to lower motivation and increase stress. In contrast, downward comparison makes people feel better about themselves and, thus, happier.
The worldly happiness strategy of striving for gold every day is foolish. It tends to lower the intrinsic motivation, and thus enjoyment that people obtain from their activities. The principle at work here is trying to improve your own past performance and the only person to whom you will have to compare yourself is you.
8. What can be learned from the 1995 study?
A. Silver medalists showed less happiness than bronze winners.
B. Silver medalists’ smiling frequency was close to that of gold medalists.
C. The average bronze medalist’s smile lasted longer than every silver medalist’s.
D. The emotions of both medalists were unchanged from the events to the podium.
9. What is the cause of the difference in medalists’ life span?
A. The stress from downward social comparison.
B. The motivation from upward social comparison.
C. The effect of different types of social comparison.
D. The failure to look up to the top after the competition.
10. What does the writer advise us to do to achieve happiness?
A. Learn from the top performers. B. Try to be the best in every field.
C. Commit to one’s consistent personal growth. D. Strengthen the motivation to obtain achievement.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. The Triumph of Coming in Third B. The Problem of Human Competition
C. The Mechanism of Social Comparison D. The Psychology of the Olympic Medalists
D
On September 9, 2024, Apple released its latest iPhone 16 series at an event called “It’s Glowtime”. At the event, Tim Cook, the company’s CEO, played up the promise of the phones’ AI features in a pre-recorded video.
Indeed, the demonstration seemed impressive. When Cook pointed the camera at a restaurant, the AI assistant Siri could tell him what was on the menu. It also could answer his questions fairly well and learn about the users from their interactions with their devices. For instance, Siri could know if a user’s mother was calling and acted appropriately.
Apple is one of many firms that want to take AI beyond huge data centres, known as the cloud, and run it on smaller devices, known as the edge. Samsung, Apple’s major competitor, launched its Galaxy S24 with some AI features earlier this year. So did Microsoft, which has launched Windows PCs designed for AI. But their efforts have shown that it is not easy to shift cloud-based AI models to the edge devices.
At present, cloud-based AI models are mostly trained on graphics processing units (GPUs) that consume so much energy that it can take a nuclear-power plant to fuel them. They also need huge amounts of memory and data. All these can cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Even once they are trained, running these AI models is costly. According to one estimate, it costs OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, 36 cents every time someone asks its AI model a question.
Companies are experimenting with various solutions to these problems. Apple will offer on-device AI to deal with the easiest tasks, but send trickier problems to the firm’s private cloud. The service will direct the most difficult requests to third-party models such as ChatGPT. But even such smaller on-device AI models require a lot of computing power to run, which puts huge stress on the edge devices’ batteries.
“Making the technology work could not only start a supercycle in device sales, but also create new opportunities for apps and digital advertising,” says Neil Shah of Counterpoint, a research firm. “But for the moment, edge devices are barely ready for basic functions, let alone Glowtime.”
12. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The Glowtime event. B. iPhone 16’s AI features.
C. Tim Cook’s performance. D. The future of AI phones.
13. Why are Samsung and Microsoft mentioned in the text?
A. To tell readers how bad competition can be.
B. To warn Apple of the potential consequences.
C. To compare their newly released edge devices.
D. To show how hard it is to apply AI to edge devices.
14. What is the problem with cloud-based AI models?
A. OpenAI charges too much money.
B. All of them have to be trained on GPUs.
C. It is too expensive to train and run them.
D. They can only deal with the easiest tasks.
15. What does Neil Shah most probably imply?
A. iPhone 16 is bound to disappoint its users.
B. AI phones’ success will depend on new apps.
C. Sales of AI phones will increase greatly soon.
D. Tim Cook was not honest with the AI features.

The Secret to Taking Great Notes
Taking good notes is a key part of the learning process. However, merely writing down what you hear word-for-word is ineffective. Here are some proven strategies to transform your note-taking.
One of the most popular and structured systems is the Cornell Method, developed for and widely taught at Cornell University. ____16____ This physical layout guides your thinking process. During class, take notes in the main section. After class, use the cue column to write keywords or questions. Finally, write a brief summary of the entire lesson at the bottom of the page. This multi-step process is scientifically proven to significantly improve long-term memory retention.
For those who think in images and connections, Mind Mapping is a visual way to organize information. Start with the main topic in the center and draw branches out for key subtopics. ____17____ You can use colors, symbols, and arrows to make connections. This method is especially beneficial for visual learners as it shows the relationships between concepts, making complex topics easier to grasp.
Regardless of the method you choose, the core principle is active engagement. Don’t just passively record information. ____18____ Engage with the material by paraphrasing the speaker’s points. This forces you to process and understand the information on the spot.
Of course, the best method is the one that works for you. ____19____ You might use the Cornell Method for history lectures, which are dense with facts, but a Mind Map for brainstorming an essay topic. You might even combine different elements from various methods to create your own personalized system.
____20____ Review your notes periodically within 24 hours of taking them. This short, spaced repetition is one of the most powerful ways to move information from your short-term to your long-term memory, solidifying your learning and making exam preparation much less stressful.
A. Then, add smaller branches for specific details.
B. Therefore, it is popular among university students.
C. Ultimately, it’s crucial to review your notes afterward.
D. Experiment with different techniques to find your favorite.
E. This means you can paraphrase the content in your own words.
F. Instead, focus on summarizing the main idea in simple elegant words.
G. It divides your paper into a cue column, a notes section, and a summary area.

I used to be very active in sports and games when I was in primary school. I won the B Division long jump and was a good sprinter (短跑运动员). As a result, I was chosen to represent the school in the long jump and relay events at the District Sports Meet. Before the sports meet, I had put in a lot of hard work and dedication during the training sessions. I woke up early every morning to go for runs and did countless drills to improve my technique. My teammates and I supported and encouraged each other during training, pushing ourselves to do better and achieve our goals.
The meet lasted two days, I had no events scheduled for the first day. So I kept myself busy by watching the others compete. Large tents were provided for the young competitors on one side of the track. Despite being assigned the last tent that was furthest from the track, I made the best of the situation by decorating it with our school colors and creating a supportive atmosphere.
The next day, I was getting ready for my events. The long jump was scheduled for the early afternoon, followed by the 8×50m relay later in the afternoon. I thought I was a pretty good jumper, but as the competition began, I realized I was vastly outclassed. We finished our jumps, and I came in fourth place, just missing out on a medal.
That was disappointing, but I reminded myself that we still had a chance in the 8×50m relay, for which I was assigned to run the fifth leg. The race date arrived. We filed into our assigned spots and prepared for the race. After a tense minute or so, I heard the starter’s gun go off. When the first runners took off, I watched nervously and excitedly as my team runners kept up with the others. As they got closer, I realized we were at least in second place.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
My turn arrived and I took the baton (接力棒) cleanly and began my run.

【答案】4. A 5. A 6. B 7. B

【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词上文“As they grew more mobile, we let them move freely around the house during the day, but when we were asleep we had to contain them in a large room, otherwise they'd ”(随着它们的活动越来越多,我们白天让它们在房子里自由活动,但当我们睡觉时,我们必须把它们关在一个大房间里,否则它们会)以及后文“We'd come down in the morning to find they'd turned the room upside down, and left it looking like a zoo.”(我们早上下楼时发现他们把房间弄得乱七八糟,让它看起来像个动物园。)可知,作者不得不把老虎们关在一个大房间里,否则它们就会调皮捣蛋,表现不好。早上下楼时发现他们把房间弄得乱七八糟,看起来像个动物园。故画线词意思是“表现不好”。故选A。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第三段中“Things quickly got very intense due to the huge amount of energy required to look after them. There were some tough times and I just felt extremely tired.(由于需要大量的精力来照顾它们,事情很快变得非常紧张。有一段艰难的日子,我只是觉得非常累)”可推知,作者在家里饲养小老虎需要大量精力照顾它,这让作者感觉非常疲惫,因此作者认为在家里养小老虎是累人的。故选B。

【答案】8. A 9. C 10. C 11. A

根据第二段中的“Using slow-motion footage captured both immediately after their events and later on the awards podium (讲台), researchers found the bronze winners appeared consistently happier on average than the silver medalists. Over 80% of bronze medalists exhibited genuine smiles, a figure that was nearly double that observed among silver medalists. Moreover, every bronze medalist’s smile lasted longer than the average smile observed among the silver medalists.(研究人员慢动作镜头捕捉了紧跟比赛结束后和稍后在颁奖台上的情况,发现铜牌获得者的平均表现的开心程度一直高于银牌获得者。超过80%的铜牌获得者展现出真诚的笑容,这一数字几乎是银牌获得者的两倍。此外,每位铜牌获得者的笑容都比银牌获得者的平均笑容持续的时间长。)”可知,1995年的研究发现铜牌得主比银牌得主表现得更开心,也就是说银牌得主没有铜牌得主表现得开心。故选A。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“The study had a handy explanation for this discrepancy: “Unsatisfactory competition outcomes may adversely affect health.” In other words, silver medalists see themselves as the first loser because they look up to the top step and compare themselves only with the gold medalists, whereas the bronze winners compare themselves favorably with all the others who never made it onto the podium at all. This theory shows the difference between upward and downward social comparison.(这项研究对这种差异有一个方便的解释:“不令人满意的比赛结果可能会对健康产生不利影响。”换句话说,银牌获得者认为自己是第一个失败者,因为他们仰望最高台阶,只将自己与金牌获得者进行比较,而铜牌获得者则将自己与所有从未登上领奖台的人进行比较。这一理论表明了向上和向下社会比较之间的差异。)”可知,奖牌得主寿命的差异反映了不同奖牌得主向上和向下社会比较之间的心理差异。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“The principle at work here is trying to improve your own past performance and the only person to whom you will have to compare yourself is you.(这里起作用的原则是努力提高自己过去的表现,你唯一需要与之比较的人就是你自己。)”可知,要致力于提高自我,与自己比较,由此可推测,作者建议要致力于个人的不断成长。故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段中的“Though second place may be the first loser, third place can be the real winner regarding happiness and longevity.(虽然第二名可能是第一个失败者,但在幸福和长寿方面,第三名可能是真正的赢家。)” 故选A。
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. C 15. A

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】One possible version:
My turn arrived and I took the baton (接力棒) cleanly and began my run. The air rushed past me as I moved closer to the next runner. Then disaster struck! I saw a boy run across the track into my path out of nowhere. I couldn’t get away from him fast enough. We were sent somersaulting over him after colliding with a crunch. Because I was young and agile, I was able to quickly pick myself up and continue the race. However, the collision cost us valuable time. I handed the baton to the next runner. I knew everything was lost when he ran with all his might, but it was too late. We’d blown our chance at a medal.
As a result, I left the meet empty-handed. As a result, we just assumed it was bad luck. I, for one, felt terrible for letting the team down, but what was done was done, and we had no choice but to accept it. Anyway, it had been an eventful but unsatisfying day for me. And I learned about failure and success and how to deal with them, and I am grateful for the lessons.
