B Jack, an engineer, never imagined racing alone across the Atlantic, much less in a boat built himself. Yet he bought the materials on the internet and managed to build one. The idea seemed impractical. Jack was then 47 and married for only two years. He and his wife Deby were building their future, and they had family to consider. Yet she encouraged him, because that is what they did for each other: support the best version of themselves. In October 2023, Jack packed his boat and flew to Lagos. Ahead of him lay the first leg of a race that would take him to Antigua, eastern Caribbean. The finish line for the first leg was Lanzarote,100km off the coast of Africa. After less than a week, Jack arrived in Lanzarote before leaving for the Caribbean. The days were bright and nights were completely dark. With the boat moving closer to the equators, heavy rain erased the sky. With the sails down and waves knocking, he stayed on the tiller (舵柄), doing his best to survive through the storm with its 40-mph winds. Eventually, the sky began to lighten. He got through the storm and was pleased with how the boat had held up. The next night, more rain fell. Suddenly, a wave hit the boat and soon the world was spinning (旋转) around him. Thanks to the safety line, Jack didn’t fall off the boat despite the dizziness and tiredness after 28 days at sea. A few days later, the storm stopped. He lay on the boat, exhausted. Crossing the finish line, he sailed 3,186 miles in 33 days, 21 hours, 2minutes. For nearly four years, he had been focused on crossing the Atlantic, and he’s now considering pushing himself in a new direction, like into a dance class. The idea fascinates and terrifies him. He admits to being a poor dancer, but with Deby’s help he might have a chance. 24. Why does the author say Jack’s idea was impractical? A. Jack had no idea how to build a boat. B. Deby felt uncertain about their future. C. Jack still faced varieties of life matters. D. Deby persuaded Jack to focus on family. 25. What is the author’s purpose in detailing the weather? A. To indicate the race’s uniqueness. B. To stress the boat’s steadiness. C. To highlight Jack’s struggle. D. To inspire readers’ sympathy. 26. Which of the following best describes Jack? A. Reliable and caring. B. Brave and persuasive. C. Ambitious and curious. D. Tough and adventurous. 27. What does Jack learn from the race? A. He is fascinated by modern dance. B. He has the potential to try new things. C. He owes his success to Deby’s help. D. He is still terrified by the long race. C Everyone loves dolphins. They’re adorable and playful. They’re often called the geniuses of the ocean. But in a recent piece for New Scientist, Caroline Williams has begun to question that last assumption. “When it comes to brainpower, dolphins might not be as special as we might think,” Williams writes. “Studies do show that dolphins can understand symbols the way humans do, but so can sea lions, parrots, monkeys and more. Actually the sea lions learn them more quickly.” Williams also questions the so-called “mirror test”, which claims that dolphins can recognize themselves or have a sense of self. “But if you look at the data, they perform the same behavior when the mirror’s there and when it’s not,” she argues. The size of a dolphin’s brain — even larger than a chimpanzee’s — is often used as proof to its intelligence, but Williams says that is also not the case. “They do have big brains, but then again the relationship between size and intelligence is kind of a tricky one anyway,” she says. According to Williams, the image of dolphins as “peaceful, loving geniuses” can be traced back to Dr. John Lilly. Lilly thought dolphins were at least as intelligent as humans, and spent years trying to figure out a way to communicate with the creature. Lilly’s life and work were an inspiration for the 1973 science fiction film The Day of the Dolphin. George Scott plays a version of Lilly — a researcher who teaches dolphins to speak English. “As a result of his early work, dolphins did start to get more attention and more researchers started looking into their intelligence,” Williams explains. “If similar things had been said about sea lions back then, maybe they would have been given just as much study. So that’s been good and bad really. On the one hand, it means we do understand dolphins quite well because there’s been a lot of research on them. On the other hand, they may be unfairly elevated (抬高) above other species. Our study shows that they are on par with other species at the most.” 28. Which statement is Caroline Williams very unlikely to agree with? A. The mirror test is misleading. B. Sea lions may be smarter than dolphins. C. Dolphins are super intelligent. D. Intelligence is not determined by brain size. 29. What is George Scott? A. A writer. B. A scientist. C. A teacher. D. An actor. 30. Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase “on par with” in the last paragraph? A. As smart as. B. Aware of. C. Suitable for. D. Less sensitive than. 31. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text? A. To review a movie. B. To introduce a new study. C. To make an argument. D. To expose false assumptions. D As cats age, they may cry more than usual at night, struggle with sleep, and act confused. A new study reveals that, like humans with Alzheimer’s disease, protein plaques (斑块) build up in aged cats’ brains — causing brain issues like overactive immune cells and supporting cells that damage delicate synapses, the critical connections between nerve cells. Earlier studies had found proteins in the brains of cats, but failed to clarify how these proteins specifically disturb brain function. McGeachan from the University of Edinburgh knew that the synapses decline early in Alzheimer’s disease in humans, so he and his team decided to focus on these connections in their cat study. They found that the brains of aged cats, with or without dementia (痴呆), had more of the protein than the younger brain samples and the plaques in the older cats often formed right around synapses. In all the aged cats, immune cells were overactive. These cells also looked like they were hiding near the plaques, a sign that they were sent to target the proteins. But instead of attacking only the plaques, the cells also seemed to be attacking some synapses. The results are similar to what is seen in human brains with Alzheimer’s. Immune cells also gather around the plaques and damage the neurons and their connections in humans with Alzheimer’s. Because of these similarities, cats are ideal for showing what human Alzheimer’s is like. Current ways of studying Alzheimer’s include using mice, which have to be genetically modified (修改) to develop Alzheimer’s. Contrary to these engineered models, aging cats develop dementia naturally. “It’s exciting to have a naturally occurring model,” McGeachan says. His team is now studying more cat brains to spot patterns between cats with and without dementia, and plans to check other Alzheimer’s-related signs in cat brains. “Cats won’t replace mice as models, but more research helps them too,” he adds. “We can improve health for both humans and animals.” 32. What causes aged cats’ unusual behaviors mentioned in Paragraph 1? A. Immune system related brain issues. B. Brain issues caused by sleep trouble. C. Plaque-related synapse damage. D. Overactive cells unrelated to plaques. 33. What did McGeachan’s team find about aged cats in their study? A. Plaque buildup damages their synapses. B. Plaques lead to overactive immune cells. C. Synapses grow more with more plaques. D. Immune cells protect synapses from plaques. 34. Why are cats better than mice for dementia research? A. Cats need less gene editing than mice. B. Cats develop dementia in a natural way. C. Cats have clearer dementia signs than mice. D. Cats’ dementia relates to artificial changes. 35. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Aged Cats: Sleep & Confusion fixes B. Aged Cats: Alzheimer’s Study Model C. Protein Plaques: Synapse Damage Factor D. Protein Plaques: Brain Issue Source Humans are now up against a series of new demanding issues that are leading dramatic change to our lifestyles: climate change, threatening infectious diseases, and increasing urbanization. ____36____ Hydroponic (水培的) farming has strong potential to relieve the threats these issues pose to our agricultural system. Growing crops in near perfect conditions using controlled environment agriculture technology is one of the biggest benefits of hydroponic farming. Crops grown indoors and hydroponically can be grown anywhere at any time of the year. ____37____ Hydroponic farming has the potential to provide fresh, local food for areas with extreme droughts and low soil quality, such as in sub-Saharan Africa. ____38____ Keeping crop production in a controlled environment enables trained scientists and advanced climate control technology to improve the inputs of water, nutrients, and light fed to the plants. For example, sensors can measure the amount and nutrient content of the water that each plant consumes. This gives farmers insight into the amount of unused water and nutrients by the plants at each stage of growth. ____39____ ____40____ For small, start-up farmers, entering into the hydroponic farming world can come with high costs associated with renting the space, loans, the renovation (翻修) of a building or space to accommodate the hydroponic structures, initial costs for materials, and costs of the labor and electricity to keep the farm up and running. While these entry costs are high, hydroponic farms have the potential to turn underused buildings into farmland to serve the community and create jobs. A. The only condition is sufficient water resources. B. Access to green vegetables is often limited there. C. The exhaustion of natural resources is also a factor. D. They are not subject to weather and soil conditions. E. It would be great if we could grow plants without water. F. Thus, they can adjust input quality and quantity for plants. G. He often warned me that remote mountain valleys were extremely dangerous, for sudden flash floods could hit without warning on rainy days. To keep me safe, he bought me an AI smart watch with danger detection and automatic SOS functions. However, I always thought his repeated reminders were unnecessary nagging (唠叨). One cloudy summer afternoon, I ignored my father’s serious warning and secretly decided to hike in the restricted back mountain area. Curious about the wild and quiet scenery, I packed my backpack and set off casually. Before I left, my father stressed the danger of mountain floods again, but I nodded carelessly and soon forgot all his words. The mountain path was peaceful and beautiful. Wandering along the winding road, I enjoyed the fresh air and lovely wild flowers. I even laughed at my father’s over-caution, believing nothing dangerous would happen. Absorbed in the amazing scenery, I walked deeper into the forbidden zone, ignoring the rising wind and light drizzle. All of a sudden, heavy rain poured down. The quiet mountain stream rose rapidly, turning into a roaring muddy flood carrying stones and branches. Seized by great panic, I tried to run back, only to find the road totally submerged (淹没). Worse still, my phone had no signal in the remote valley. I was trapped helplessly, falling into total despair. Just at that moment, my AI smart watch vibrated sharply. Detecting my extreme panic and rapid heartbeat, it automatically sent my real-time location and SOS messages to my father. Meanwhile, a steady voice from the watch guided me slowly toward the nearest high and safe rock platform. Struggling to calm my trembling legs, I followed the watch’s precise voice guidance step by step. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Holding me tightly in his wet and trembling arms, my father let out a long sigh of relief. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 西安市第八十三中学 2026届高三年级第九次模拟考试英语试题 命题人: 审题人: 注意事项: 1. Where will Annie go tomorrow night? She draws up a weekly budget. B. She reviews her expenses daily. C. She keeps her bank card at home. 13. What is the man’s spending habit? A. Spending within his budget. B. Buying daily necessities at a discount. C. Using shopping as a cure for boredom. C 12. B 13. M: Amy, I need to stop at the bank to withdraw some cash. W: Why not just pay with your phone? M: Actually, I’ve stopped using online payment for the past three months. W: Oh, you must be worried that online payment isn’t secure. M: No, it is safe. But paying online is too convenient and that makes me accidentally overspend all the time. W: Oh, I’ve also bought clothes and shoes I didn’t need because they were on sale. But I’ve found that if I go over my spending every night, that keeps me from spending too much. M: I tried that strategy, but it just didn’t work. When I was tired and hungry, I’d use my phone to order food. W: Well, what do you do now then? M: I go to the bank once a week, and the rest of the time I keep my bank card at home, so I can’t get more cash out. W: What prevents you from just going to the bank and getting more money, if you want to buy something? M: The first month I did withdraw extra cash twice, but I felt guilty about it. After that I refuse to spend more than what I had budgeted, and by now it’s just a habit. 14. Where does the conversation take place? A. In a studio. B. I’m your old friend David Brown. Tonight, we’re discussing digital parenting with Dr. Lisa Chen. Good evening, Dr. Chen. W: Good evening, David. M: Dr. Chen, many parents these days track their kids’ locations and online activity. What’s your perspective on that? W: That’s right. But like most things, it has two sides — there are downsides too. M: What kind of downsides are we talking about? W: While some parents think monitoring kids keeps them safe, studies show it can harm trust. Teens often feel restricted, and some even bypass controls, which might make them less safe. M: Do you know any teens who dislike that? W: Yes. A 16-year-old boy once told me, “At my age, I should be the one deciding if I’m tracked.” M: So, what’s a better approach for parents? W: Parents can have open conversations with their kids. For example, saying, “Let’s set the rules together” instead of just laying down the law. That way, kids learn to use technology responsibly without feeling the need to rebel. M: Great advice! Thank you so much for joining us. W: My pleasure. C 25. C 26. D 27. 根据第二段中“Jack was then 47 and married for only two years. He and his wife Deby were building their future, and they had family to consider.(杰克当时47岁,结婚才两年。他和他的妻子黛比正在建设他们的未来,他们要考虑家庭)”可知,杰克当时47岁,结婚才两年,他和妻子正在规划未来,还有家庭需要考虑。这说明杰克仍然面临着各种各样的生活事务,在这种情况下独自划船穿越大西洋的想法不太现实。故选C项。 【25题详解】 推理判断题。文章第四段描述了Jack在航行过程中遇到的各种恶劣天气,如“With the boat moving closer to the equators, heavy rain erased the sky. With the sails down and waves knocking, he stayed on the tiller (舵柄), doing his best to survive through the storm with its 40-mph winds.(随着船靠近赤道,大雨抹去了天空。 根据最后一段“For nearly four years, he had been focused on crossing the Atlantic, and he’s now considering pushing himself in a new direction, like into a dance class. 【答案】28. C 29. D 30. A 31. But in a recent piece for New Scientist, Caroline Williams has begun to question that last assumption.(人人都喜爱海豚。它们模样可爱、生性活泼,常被称作海洋中的天才。但Caroline Williams在《新科学家》杂志近期发文,开始质疑这一固有看法。)”及全文内容可知,文章主要介绍一篇新研究观点,质疑海豚超高智商的固有认知,从学习能力、镜像测试、脑容量等角度展开分析,旨在介绍这项全新研究。 D As cats age, they may cry more than usual at night, struggle with sleep, and act confused. Protein Plaques: Brain Issue Source 【答案】32. C 33. A 34. B 35. 根据第一段中“A new study reveals that, like humans with Alzheimer’s disease, protein plaques (斑块) build up in aged cats’ brains — causing brain issues like overactive immune cells and supporting cells that damage delicate synapses, the critical connections between nerve cells. (一项新的研究表明,与患有阿尔茨海默病的人类一样,老年猫的大脑中会形成蛋白质斑块,这会引发一些脑部问题,比如免疫细胞过度活跃,以及支持细胞会破坏脆弱的突触——神经细胞之间的关键连接。)”可知,老年猫出现夜间频繁叫唤、睡眠困难和行为困惑等异常行为的原因,与蛋白质斑块堆积导致突触受损有关。故选C项。 【33题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“They found that the brains of aged cats, with or without dementia (痴呆), had more of the protein than the younger brain samples and the plaques in the older cats often formed right around synapses. (他们发现,无论是否患有痴呆症,老年猫的大脑中这种蛋白质的含量都比年轻猫的大脑样本多,而且老年猫大脑中的斑块通常就形成在突触周围。)”以及第三段中“But instead of attacking only the plaques, the cells also seemed to be attacking some synapses. (但这些细胞似乎不仅仅攻击斑块,还攻击了一些突触。)”可知,McGeachan的团队在研究中发现,老年猫大脑中的蛋白质斑块堆积导致突触受损。故选A项。 根据第四段中“Current ways of studying Alzheimer’s include using mice, which have to be genetically modified (修改) to develop Alzheimer’s. Contrary to these engineered models, aging cats develop dementia naturally. Humans are now up against a series of new demanding issues that are leading dramatic change to our lifestyles: climate change, threatening infectious diseases, and increasing urbanization. G. However, these advantages do not come without challenges. 36. C 37. D 38. B 39. F 40. In my opinion, over-reliance on fragmented learning is not wise. Though it is convenient and time-saving, it fails to build a complete knowledge system and result in shallow learning. By contrast, reading textbooks and taking paper notes helps us think deeply and master knowledge steadily. Therefore, we should combine the two methods. We can use fragmented learning for review but treat systematic learning as our main way of studying. In my opinion→ As far as I can see 掌握:master→ grasp 倾向于做某事:tend to do→ be inclined to do 2. We can use fragmented learning for review but treat systematic learning as our main way of studying. Although we can turn to fragmented learning to review knowledge, we should take systematic learning as our primary study method. 1】Nowadays, with smartphones and online platforms widely used, many students tend to adopt fragmented learning, such as doing exercises and learning through short videos, while traditional systematic learning is gradually ignored.(运用了with的复合结构) 【高分句型2】Though it is convenient and time-saving, it fails to build a complete knowledge system and result in shallow learning.(运用了Though引导的让步状语从句) 第二节 (满分25分) 67. My father worked as a forest ranger, guarding the mountain forests all year round. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】例文 Struggling to calm my trembling legs, I followed the watch’s precise voice guidance step by step. The raging (猛烈的) flood flowed wildly beside me, bringing countless stones and branches along. Cold rain soaked (湿透) my whole body and made me feel extremely cold and scared. I held firmly onto the rough rocks and moved forward slowly and cautiously. After great efforts, I finally reached the high and safe platform out of danger. Before long, I heard familiar shouts coming from afar (从远处). It was my father. Knowing my exact position through the smart watch, he rushed through muddy paths bravely regardless of the terrible weather. Holding me tightly in his wet and trembling arms, my father let out a long sigh of relief. Seeing his exhausted and anxious face, tears welled up in my eyes immediately. I felt extremely regretful and kept saying sorry for turning a deaf ear to his sincere warnings. Staring at the AI watch on my wrist, I had a clear understanding. What truly saved me was not the smart device, but my father’s constant concern, endless love and silent protection that had accompanied me all the time. 词汇激活 行为类 ①紧握/抓紧:hold firmly/grip tightly ②盯着看:stare at/gaze at/fix one’s eyes on 情绪类 ①害怕的:scared/frightened ②焦虑的:anxious/worried/nervous 【点睛】【高分句型1】Knowing my exact position through the smart watch, he rushed through muddy paths bravely regardless of the terrible weather.(运用了现在分词作状语) 【高分句型2】What truly saved me was not the smart device, but my father’s constant concern, endless love and silent protection that had accompanied me all the time.(运用了what引导的主语从句,that引导的限制性定语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
