Passage 1
根据短文内容回答问题。
It’s normal to wonder, “What if something goes wrong?” It’s important to recognize this thought and manage it so that you don’t become overwhelmed (不知所措地) by worry. Thinking about the future is a common part of life. Everyone sometimes imagines what might happen if things don’t go according to the plan: “What if I make a mistake?” or “What if others laugh at me?” These “what-if” worries usually focus on negative (消极的) outcomes. Spending too much time thinking about “what if” can make you hesitant (犹豫) to take action, and it can also make it hard to focus on what you’re doing or listening to others.
There are various ways you can help yourself. Expert Angela McMillan suggests creating an “IF/THEN” plan. “For example,” she says, “IF you need to speak in front of the class, THEN you can take three deep breaths and remind yourself that you are prepared. Or, IF a social event is too noisy and you feel lost, THEN you can step outside for a few minutes.” You can also identify your worries and then challenge them. Try to focus on what could go right. For example, instead of thinking “What if I miss the ball when I try to kick it?” ask yourself, “What if I score a goal?”
McMillan points out that most worries never actually happen. “Remember that they are just thoughts and the bravest thing we can do is not let worry take control,” she says. Try to focus on what you’re currently doing, whether it’s the book you’re reading, the TV show you’re watching, or the conversation you’re having. Getting angry with yourself will only make you feel worse, so be kind to yourself. Think about how you would talk to a friend who is feeling anxious—and then speak to yourself in that same way.
1.Spending too much time on “what-if” worries can make it difficult to focus, can’t it?
2.What is a common reaction when people think about the future according to the passage?
3.Who suggests creating an “IF/THEN” plan to manage worries, and can you give one example of such a plan from the passage?
4.What does the passage recommend you do if you find yourself in a noisy social event and don’t know what to do?
5.How can you shift your focus when you start feeling worried according to the passage?
6.Why does Angela McMillan suggest thinking about what could go right instead of focusing on what could go wrong?
7.Think about a time when worry stopped you from doing something. Based on the advice in the passage, how can you do better if you meet the same situation again?
【答案】1.Yes, it can. 2.People often wonder what might happen if things don’t go as planned, focusing on potential negative outcomes. 3.Angela McMillan. If you need to speak in front of the class, then you can take three deep breaths and remind yourself that you’re prepared. 4.Stepping outside for a few minutes. 5.Focusing on what could go right because it helps reduce fear and anxiety. 6.Because if people think positively, they may feel more confident and be more likely to take action instead of avoiding things out of fear. 7.I remember a time when I didn’t join a group activity because I was worried about making mistakes. I could have prepared an “IF/THEN” plan and focused on what could go well. This might have helped me feel more confident and encouraged me to participate. (开放性作答,结合实际,言之有理即可。)

6.根据第二段“Try to focus on what could go right.”及第三段内容可知,Angela McMillan建议思考积极方面,因为人们积极思考时可能更自信,更可能采取行动而非因恐惧回避事情,故填Because if people think positively, they may feel more confident and be more likely to take action instead of avoiding things out of fear。

Passage 2
Why is looking back at our experiences so important for moving forward? It seems that no matter who you are or what you do, the past can be your greatest teacher. We asked people from different walks of life to share their thoughts.
Mr. Chen, a 65-year-old retired teacher, learned about preparation. “As a young teacher, I once prepared a lesson in a hurry and taught it poorly. That embarrassing experience taught me a lasting lesson: good preparation is important for success. Since then, I’ve always prepared carefully, not just in teaching, but in everything I do.”
Li Ming, a 22-year-old university student, learned about changing methods. “Failing an important exam was hard for me. Instead of giving up, I learned to change my study ways. I started making plans and asking for help. This change not only improved my grades but also taught me how to face difficulties in a good way.”
Ms. Wang, a 40-year-old cook, learned about not giving up. “My first year as a cook was tough. Many dishes didn’t turn out well. But each failed try taught me something new. I kept improving my skills little by little. Now I understand that those early problems were needed for me to become good at my job.”

Passage 2

At Kate’s school, they celebrated “Road Safety Week” recently. Every student attended an educational lecture about street safety given by a police officer. Here’s a summary of the key points the officer shared.
Many car accidents can be avoided. They occur when passengers aren’t cautious. A big reason for these accidents is driving too fast. If a car is speeding, it might not be able to stop in time when something unexpected happens. It is important to be careful whether you’re crossing the street or walking on the sidewalk. Remember, not just car drivers are responsible for accidents. Pedestrians (行人) and cyclists also share the duty. You should never step into the street without checking both ways.
Do you like biking? When you’re on your bike, it’s important not to make sudden moves without warning others. For example, when you plan to turn left, always check for any car or motorcycle. Use your left hand to show your turn and wait until it’s safe to go.
The rules we follow on the roads are actually quite easy. If we pay attention and follow them,we can prevent accidents from happening.

话题4 天气与我们的生活
Passage 1
Climate conditions have a significant impact on people’s daily lives. Firstly, in hot weather, individuals often feel uncomfortable and may experience heat exhaustion. As a result, many choose to stay in cool places and avoid vigorous physical activities, leading to a decrease in overall activity levels. Additionally, hot weather can influence eating habits, with people preferring light food.
On the other hand, cold weather can cause transportation issues. Snow and ice can affect roads and public transport, leading to delays. During such times, many people choose to stay indoors. What’s more, cold climates prompt individuals to wear heavier clothing, which can affect daily dressing choices.
Rainy days often lead people to avoid outdoor activities such as picnics, sports and gardening. Instead, individuals tend to engage in indoor activities to avoid getting wet. In extreme weather conditions, like hurricanes or heavy snowstorms, schools often cancel classes, particularly for children and the elderly, where safety becomes a primary concern.

Passage 1
Answer the questions.
Have you ever wondered what happens to your old toothbrushes, shampoo bottles and food wrappers? Most people throw them into the bin without thinking. But did you know that a family of four creates about 1,000 kilograms of household waste every year? That is as heavy as a small car!
The good news is that up to 60% of household waste can be recycled or composted. For example, vegetable peels and eggshells can become compost for plants. Paper and cardboard can be made into new notebooks. Plastic bottles can be turned into jackets or even furniture.
However, if we mix all our waste together, recycling becomes very difficult. A banana peel can ruin a whole truckload of paper recycling. That is why sorting waste at home is so important.
Many communities now have four different bins: blue for paper, green for glass, yellow for plastic and metal, and brown for kitchen waste. Some cities even use smart bins that weigh your waste and give you points. You can exchange the points for discounts at local shops.
So, what can you do? Start by putting two small bins in your kitchen — one for wet waste (food scraps) and one for dry waste (paper, plastic). When a bin is full, take it to the correct community bin. Remember: when you sort right, you help the planet fight!
1.How much household waste does a family of four create per year?
2.What is one benefit of sorting waste correctly?
3.Can a banana peel affect paper recycling? Why or why not?
4.What can you get by using smart bins in some cities?
5.What two bins can you start with in your kitchen?
6.Do you think it is necessary for every family to sort waste? Why or why not? (Give at least two reasons)
【答案】1.About 1,000 kilograms. 2.It makes recycling easier / It helps the environment. 3.Yes. Because a banana peel can ruin a whole truckload of paper recycling. 4.Points (which can be exchanged for discounts). 5.A bin for wet waste (food scraps) and a bin for dry waste (paper, plastic). 6.Yes. Because it helps protect the environment and saves resources. Also, it makes community recycling programmes more effective. (Any two reasonable reasons)

Passage 2
Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答问题)
Have you ever wondered what happens to your old computers, MP3 players and cellphones when they stop working or you want to upgrade to a new one?
Many people simply throw them away. But did you know that people all over the world created a huge amount of electronic waste, called e-waste? They made 41.8 million tons of it, but only recycled 6.5 million tons. That left 7.1 million tons of waste, and China was the second-largest producer with 6 million tons.
It’s important to be aware of e-waste because it can be both valuable and harmful. It’s like a hidden treasure trove called an “urban mine” because it contains metals like gold, silver, iron and copper that are worth a lot of money — over 322 billion yuan worldwide! These materials can be reused and help us save resources.
However, if we just throw away our electronics, they can release harmful chemicals into the soil and air. This can harm the environment and make people sick.
So, what can we do to reduce e-waste? One way is to buy electronic devices that last longer. When you have old electronics you no longer need, like toys or old cellphones, you can give them to charity or find someone who can use them.
Additionally, some companies offer recycling programs where you can get discounts when you trade in your old devices for new ones. For example, Apple in China gives customers a discount if they bring in their used devices when buying new ones. The company fixes up the old devices and sells them at lower prices, which is great for both the environment and your wallet!
1.Why is it important to recycle e-waste?
2.What is a bad effect of not recycling e-waste?
3.We should buy cellphones that can be used for a long time, shouldn’t we?
4.What does Apple in China offer customers as an incentive to recycle their old devices?
5.What type of e-waste recycling method would you personally choose, and why?
6.Which do you consider more when shopping: being environmentally friendly or the price? Why?
【答案】1.Because it contains valuable metals like gold, silver, iron and copper that can be reused, helping us save natural resources. 2.Electronics can release harmful chemicals into the soil and air. 3.Yes, we should. 4.It offers a discount when they trade in their used devices for new ones. 5.I would choose to donate old electronics to charity because it helps others and reduces waste. 6.I consider being environmentally friendly more because protecting the environment is important for future generations.
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了电子垃圾的危害以及如何减少电子垃圾。

Passage 3
Can a pile of poop (一坨大便) save a forest? It sounds funny, but for the African forest elephant, their poop can be a real life-saver!
These elephants live deep in the rainforest. They are smaller than their cousins—African savanna elephants (非洲草原象), but they have a big mission: keeping the forest growing. Their favourite snack is the fruit from the ebony tree (乌木树). You might have seen ebony wood on a fancy guitar. This wood is very hard and helps guitars make a clear sound.
But the ebony tree has a problem. It cannot spread its seeds by itself. That’s where the elephant comes to help. After an elephant eats the fruit, it walks far, far away and…plop (扑通一声)! It poops out the seeds in a new place.
This pile of poop is like a smelly shield (盾,屏障). It hides the seeds from hungry rats and other animals. Inside the poop, the seeds are safe and ready to grow.
Sadly, these “gardeners” are in trouble because of hunters. Without elephants, there are no poop shields. This means fewer ebony trees can grow. Ebony trees grow very slowly. It takes over 100 years for one to become an adult. If forest elephants disappeared, the ebony trees might disappear, too. As scientists say, what we do to the elephants today will change the forest 100 years from now. Let’s protect our big heroes!
1.What’s the important mission of the African forest elephant?
2.Where can you find ebony wood?
3.How does the poop protect the seeds?
4.According to the article, who puts elephants in danger?
5.Why is it hard for the ebony tree to grow? Find two possible reasons in the article.
6.Protecting the elephants is a good way to protect the forest. Can you give two other ways to protect the forest? Write at least 30 words.
【答案】1.Keeping the forest growing. 2.On a fancy guitar. 3.By hiding the seeds from hungry rats and other animals. 4.Hunters. 5.Because the ebony tree cannot spread its seeds by itself, and it grows very slowly, taking over 100 years to become an adult. 6.We can use less paper and recycle waste paper in our daily life, so fewer trees need to be cut down. We can also refuse to buy products made from rare wood to reduce the demand for logging.

Why?
