Passage 1
The World of Different People
The world is made up of many different people. They have different appearances, personalities, and hobbies. Understanding these differences can help us get along better with others.
First, appearances are different. Some people are tall, and some are short. Some have straight hair, and others have curly hair. We should not judge people only by how they look. A kind heart is more important than a beautiful face.
Second, personalities are also different. Some people are outgoing and talkative. They like to make friends with everyone. Others are quiet and shy. They prefer to have a few close friends. We should respect everyone’s personality. It’s okay to be different.
Third, hobbies and interests vary from person to person. Some like sports, some like music, and others like reading. We can learn new things from people with different interests. For example, a friend who loves art can teach you how to draw.
Understanding differences helps build a friendly world. When we accept that everyone is unique, we can live together in peace. We can also learn from each other and become better people.

This is called the “cat tax”. Every new user has to “pay” it, and sharing pictures of their cats is a way to greet (问候) the Chinese users.
“Cat tax” is just a joke, ★ They do this to talk to Chinese users. They happily show pictures of their cute cats. The Chinese users say hello and reply with pictures of their own cats. Some new users don’t have cats, but they still want to join the fun. They borrow cats from friends or show pictures of other lovely animals like dogs or horses.
Besides the “cat tax”, users also help each other in other ways. For example, American users help Chinese users with English, while Chinese users help them with math. Users also share their daily lives, food, and hobbies with each other.

话题4 天气与我们的生活
Passage 1
This March, China has experienced unusual weather changes. On March 25, Shanghai recorded 30°C, breaking its 1933 record for the earliest hot day. Normally, Shanghai’s first 30°C day comes in late April or May.
But the heat didn’t last. A cold wave hit China from March 24 to 30, causing temperature drops of over 20°C in some areas. Northern China faced its coldest days between March 27-29, while southern China will feel similar cold around March 29-30.
Hot Days and Big Changes
In March, 20 cities like Changsha, Hefei, and Zhengzhou saw temperatures swing wildly. From March 1-24, daily highs jumped between below 10°C to over 22°C.
Hefei had the most extreme change: temperatures dropped 20°C in one day. On March 3, it went from 28°C at 2 p.m. to 14.8°C by 3 p.m. due to a strong cold wind.
Many places also broke heat records. Over 300 weather stations reported their hottest March days. Cities in Henan, Hubei, and Zhejiang might see their earliest 35°C days ever.
Cold Wave Coming
As March ends, temperatures will fall sharply. 11 cities like Lanzhou, Guiyang, and Xining might see 20°C drops within 48 hours. For example, Xining could go from 18°C to -3°C.
Such sudden cold weather is rare. In the past 74 years, only Guiyang had over 10 cases of 20°C drops in March. This year, Xining and Lanzhou may break their own records.

In many parts of the world, people have used animals to predict the weather for centuries. In Europe, farmers watch cows. If cows lie down in the field, it is said that rain is coming. In Africa, people observe elephants. When elephants move to higher ground, it often means a flood is near.
In North America, squirrels are good weather watchers. If squirrels gather many nuts early in autumn, the winter will be very cold and long. In Japan, fishermen watch crabs. If crabs move to deeper water, a storm is on the way.

Passage 3
Many people go to Australia for holidays. People often ask what the weather is like in Australia. The answer is that it changes a lot! Why? Because Australia is a large country. The weather in different parts of the country is different.
The northern parts of Australia are warm to hot all year round because it is close to the equator (赤道). In the north, summer is also the rainy season.
The areas along the coast (海岸) around Sydney are warm in winter, with the temperatures about 10℃ to 16℃. In summer, the temperature is about 26℃.
However, if you think all parts of the country are warm all year round, you’ll be inaccurate. Some parts in Australia are very cold during winter. When we say cold, we don’t mean that cold like the winter in Harbin. In fact, many people do not know that there are ski resorts (滑雪胜地) in the mountains of Australia.
Anyway, Australia is a good place to visit. You can enjoy everything there. If you want to go there for a visit, all you should think about is the weather there.
1.Why does the weather in Australia change a lot?
A.Because the areas along the coast are different in Australia.
B.Because Australia is a very large country.
C.Because the seasons are different in Australia.
D.Because the temperature is different in Australia.
2.How is the weather in the northern parts of Australia?
A.Cold to warm. B.Cool to cold. C.Hot to cool. D.Warm to hot.
3.What does the underlined word “inaccurate” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Right. B.Wrong. C.Excellent. D.Unhappy.
4.Which is the right structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
5.Which can be the best title for the passage?
A.Holidays in Australia. B.Famous Places in Australia.
C.Four Seasons in Australia. D.The Weather in Different Parts of Australia.
【答案】1.B 2.D 3.B 4.A 5.D

1.根据第一段“The answer is that it changes a lot! Why? Because Australia is a large country.”,澳大利亚的天气变化很大的原因是因为澳大利亚是一个非常大的国家。
2.根据第二段“The northern parts of Australia are warm to hot all year round because it is close to the equator (赤道).”,澳大利亚北部地区全年温暖至炎热。
3.根据第四段“However, if you think all parts of the country are warm all year round, you’ll be inaccurate. Some parts in Australia are very cold during winter.”,澳大利亚的一些地区冬天很冷,所以如果你认为这个国家的所有地区全年都很温暖,那你就错了,划线部分的含义是“有错误的”。
Passage 1
Our neighbourhood has started a new green project called “Zero Waste Community”. The project aims to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills by 80% within one year.
How does it work? First, every household receives three different bins: one for recyclables (plastic, glass, paper), one for kitchen waste, and one for other waste. Second, volunteers collect recyclables from each building every Tuesday and Friday. Third, the community has set up a repair café where people can bring broken items like lamps, toys, and clothes to be fixed for free.
The results have been amazing. In the first three months, the neighbourhood recycled 5 tons of plastic and 3 tons of paper. The repair café has saved over 200 items from being thrown away. Many residents have changed their habits. Mrs. Chen, a retired teacher, said, “I used to throw away everything. Now I sort my waste carefully and take my broken kettle to the repair café.”
The project also encourages creative reuse. Last month, they held a competition where people made art from waste. A student named Li Ming won first prize with a robot made entirely from plastic bottles and old comic books.
The government is now considering spreading this project to other neighbourhoods. The success of “Zero Waste Community” proves that small actions can make a big difference.

When we got there, we found lots of waste on the ground: plastic bags, food pieces and empty bottles. Some waste even fell into the small river. Wastewater from a nearby factory also ran into the river. This made the water terrible and killed all the small fish.
Our teacher taught us step by step how to sort the waste first. We put the waste into different baskets and removed all the garbage from the river. We also planted ten young trees along the riverbank. After three hours of work, the park looked clean and fresh again.

Many people from the US call themselves “TikTok refugees” and come to this Chinese app. The Chinese people have a fun way of welcoming them: They ask the new users to share a photo of their cats.
Scientists say climate change is making March weather hotter and less predictable. They advise checking weather reports daily and dressing in layers (分层穿衣).

Passage 2
In many parts of the world, people have used animals to predict the weather for centuries. In Europe, farmers watch cows. If cows lie down in the field, it is said that rain is coming. In Africa, people observe elephants. When elephants move to higher ground, it often means a flood is near.
In North America, squirrels are good weather watchers. If squirrels gather many nuts early in autumn, the winter will be very cold and long. In Japan, fishermen watch crabs. If crabs move to deeper water, a storm is on the way.
Some birds also give clues. Swallows fly low when the air pressure drops, which usually means rain. If they fly high, the weather will be clear. Of course, modern technology is more accurate, but animal signs are still interesting to many people.
