In April, some students from Zhenyuan High School in Guizhou started working as English tour guides in their hometown, 1 (bridge) cultures through language.
It all began with an English tour guide contest 2 (launch) at the school by their English teacher, Shen Liangfang, who wanted her students to enhance their language skills while promoting local 3 (tour). The initiative, however, turned into a journey of self-discovery and cultural pride for the students.
They dived into intense training right from the start. Shen created lessons on telling historical stories, improving 4 (pronounce), and speaking in public. “We practiced describing Zhenyuan’s Qinglong Cave and ancient bridges until our throats went dry,” recalled 11th grader Zhou Runkun, who became one of the top “tour guides”.
The 5 (contest) highlight was filming promotion videos at Zhenyuan’s iconic sites. During a shoot at the Wuyang River, 11th grader Pu Yizitan kept slipping up. “My classmates cheered me on, 6 really touched me and built my confidence. In the end, I pulled it off,” she said.
The videos, uploaded by Zhenyuan’s government on Douyin and WeChat, quickly caught people’s attention. A clip of six 11th graders from Zhenyuan High School talking about the famous sights in Zhenyuan got 100,000 views in just five days.
For participants, the project went 7 schoolwork. “I used to be afraid to speak English, but now I’m excited to share my hometown’s stories,” said student Luo Jiahao. Teacher Shen added: “Their confidence 8 (shoot) up when they saw their words could link Zhenyuan to the world.”
The initiative, now 9 model for rural education, inspired Shen and her team to launch similar programs in Zhenyuan. As Zhou put it: “We’re not just students 10 bridges between cultures.”
At Broken Hill High School, my Year 9 science class’s crop reports read like death notices, “Tomato plant grew. Then died.” 15 identical reports, lacking in curiosity. “Why bother?” Julia kicked dust over her dying young plants, “Google’s got answers.”
I realized something was wrong. So I replaced textbooks with tools. “Forget reports. Tend your plot daily — then journal whatever you notice.” No grading rules, no grades. Just earth — covered notebooks. For two weeks, 28 skeptical (持怀疑态度的) teens watered and weeded at the 40℃ heat.
Then came Julia’s entry, “The cracks in the soil aren’t just dry — they’re thirsty mouths begging. When I pour water, they swallow. Yesterday, an ant drowned in one. Felt like a crime.” “Drama queen,” Carlos rolled his eyes. But the next morning, he was bending by his beans, writing “Roots are secret miners. They drill for gold we can’t see.” By harvest month, their journals were filled with sentences like those.
“Let’s make a book,” proposed Julia. Using biology lab microscopes, students photographed tiny insects on cabbages. Art class carved lino prints (油毡版画) of root systems. We crowd — funded printing for “Dirt Diaries — True Tales from the School Plot”. My “scientists” sold 200 copies in three hours. Profits went to local farmers.
But the true harvest came when Julia handed a copy of “Dirt Diaries” to our librarian. She showed him the “Your Turn” section, which read, “Plant a seed (any seed). When it comes up, write what it whispers. Pass this book on.”
Her tomato death notice now reads, “Bye ‘Big Red’ — victim of my ambition (3kg overfed fertilizer). Lesson: More love ≠ more growth. Humans too.”
1.What was the original problem with the students’ crop reports?
A.They showed no personal real interest.
B.They failed to follow the required format.
C.They contained too many scientific terms.

2.What was the key change in the teacher’s new assignment?
A.Introducing a strict grading system.
B.Replacing tools with new textbooks.
C.Organizing a competition among different plots.
D.Focusing on daily observation and free recording.
3.What is the main function of paragraph 3 in the text?

B.To illustrate the change in students’ attitudes.
C.To compare the writing styles of two students.
D.To explain the biological process of plant growth.
4.What does the underlined word “the true harvest” in Para. 5 refer to?
A.The financial profit. B.Mastery of scientific concepts.

How to Build Good Study Habits for High School Success
High school is a critical period for learning and personal growth, and good study habits are essential for academic success. Many students struggle with studying in distracting environments, which leads to frustration and poor grades. The good news is that you can develop effective habits with small but continuous efforts.
1 A fixed study space helps your brain connect the area with learning, making it easier to focus when you start studying. It should be quiet, well-lit, and free of distractions like phones or loud music. It doesn’t have to be big — a small desk in your bedroom works if it is only for studying. Keep your space clean and your supplies within reach so you won’t waste time looking for things.
Making a detailed study plan is another key step to effective learning. Instead of studying without any purpose, make a clear daily or weekly schedule. List the subjects you need to review and set realistic goals for each task. 2 For example, instead of “I will study English this evening,” try “I will memorize 20 new words and finish one reading comprehension passage this evening.” This way, you won’t feel overwhelmed and can clearly see how much you have accomplished.
Taking breaks is often ignored but plays a vital role in maintaining study efficiency. 3 If you study for hours without stopping, your brain will get tired, and your productivity will drop sharply. A good rule is to study for 45 — 60 minutes and then take a 5 — 10 minute break. You can walk, stretch, or look outside instead of using your phone, which helps your brain recharge quickly.
Effective note-taking can help you review and remember knowledge more easily. When listening to teachers or reading textbooks, don’t write down every word. 4 Focus on key points, main ideas, and important examples. Use simple symbols and headings to organize your notes, so you can quickly find the information you need when reviewing.
No one can master all knowledge alone, so seeking help when needed is a smart study habit. 5 If you don’t understand a concept, don’t hesitate to ask your teacher for clarification after class. You can also study with classmates and discuss difficult problems together — explaining something to others can also deepen your own understanding.
A.Create a fixed and organized study space.
B.Break down big tasks into small, specific goals.
C.You should record the most important information instead.
D.Long-time continuous study will reduce your learning efficiency.
E.A clean study space can help you stay in a good mood.
F.Studying with friends is more interesting than studying alone.
G.Asking for help is not a sign of weakness but a way to improve.

1.bridging 2.launched 3.tourism 4.pronunciation 5.contest’s 6.which 7.beyond 8.shot 9.a 10.but
根据空前的形容词local(当地的)可知,此处应用名词tourism(旅游业)作promoting(推广)的宾语。
根据空前的动词improving(改善)可知,此处应用名词pronunciation(发音)作宾语。
根据后文学生所说的话“I used to be afraid to speak English, but now I’m excited to share my hometown’s stories”可知,该项目给学生带来了学业之外的收获,go beyond为固定短语,意为“超越”。
not just... but...
D.They lacked sufficient detail and personal reflection.
A.To describe the extreme weather conditions.
C.A professional academic book. D.Students’ growth and lasting influence.
【答案】1.A 2.D 3.B 4.D
根据第一段中的“15 identical reports, lacking in curiosity. “Why bother?” Julia kicked dust over her dying young plants, “Google’s got answers.”(15份雷同的报告,缺乏好奇心。“何必费心?”Julia朝她奄奄一息的幼苗踢了踢土,“谷歌上有答案”)”可知,学生最初的作物报告问题在于千篇一律,缺乏好奇心,没有体现出个人的真实兴趣,显得十分敷衍。故选A项。
根据第二段中的“I realized something was wrong. So I replaced textbooks with tools. “Forget reports. Tend your plot daily — then journal whatever you notice.”No grading rules, no grades.(我意识到哪里出了问题。于是我用工具取代了课本。“别写报告了。每天照料你的地块,然后记录你观察到的一切”没有评分规则,不打分数。)”可知,老师新任务的关键变化是不再要求写报告,而是专注于日常观察和自由记录。故选D项。
3.推理判断题。根据第三段“Then came Julia’s entry, “The cracks in the soil aren’t just dry — they’re thirsty mouths begging. When I pour water, they swallow. Yesterday, an ant drowned in one. Felt like a crime.” “Drama queen,” Carlos rolled his eyes. But the next morning, he was bending by his beans, writing “Roots are secret miners. They drill for gold we can’t see.” By harvest month, their journals were filled with sentences like those.(然后是朱莉娅的记录:“土壤中的裂缝不仅仅是干燥的——它们是口渴的嘴巴在乞求。当我浇水时,它们会吞咽。昨天,一只蚂蚁在其中一条裂缝里淹死了。感觉就像犯了罪”“戏精”卡洛斯翻了个白眼。但第二天早上,他正弯腰看着自己种的豆子,写下“根是秘密的矿工。它们在挖掘我们看不见的金子”到了收获的月份,他们的日记里满是这样的句子。)”可知,这段主要通过描述学生记录内容的变化,展示了学生态度的转变。故选B项。
4.词句猜测题。根据第四段中的“We crowd - funded printing for “Dirt Diaries — True Tales from the School Plot”. My “scientists” sold 200 copies in three hours. Profits went to local farmers.(我们众筹印刷了《泥土日记——学校土地的真实故事》。我的“科学家们”在三个小时内卖出了200本。利润捐给了当地农民。)”以及第五段“But the true harvest came when Julia handed a copy of “Dirt Diaries” to our librarian. She showed him the “Your Turn” section, which read, ‘Plant a seed (any seed). When it comes up, write what it whispers. Pass this book on.’(但真正的收获是当茱莉亚把一本《泥土日记》交给我们的图书管理员时。她给他看了“轮到你了”这一部分,上面写着:“种下一颗种子(任何种子)。当它发芽时,写下它低语的内容。把这本书传下去”)”可知,这里的“真正的收获”不仅仅是指卖书获得的利润,更重要的是学生们通过这次经历获得的成长以及这种经历所带来的持续影响。故选D项。
三、七选五
【答案】1.A 2.B 3.D 4.C 5.G
