Last April, after I published an essay about poetry as part of National Poetry Month, an editor told me he’d often thought that the world would be a better place if we had a poem delivered to our doorstep each morning instead of a newspaper. As a newspaperman, I’m not ready to discourage readership of each day’s edition, but maybe there’s something to be said for reading a newspaper and a poem each morning.
All of that has led to a small experiment. In an effort to keep a little poetry in my life long after National Poetry Month had passed, I decided to read at least one poem a day after reading through the newspaper over breakfast. Thanks to two digital services that deliver poetry right to my email inbox, it’s been an easy decision to keep.
Many public radio listeners are familiar with The Writer’s Almanac, a five-minute broadcast hosted by Garrison Keillor that airs on lots of stations around the country. Each day’s edition includes a handful of facts about literary anniversaries, along with a short poem that Keillor recites. Fans can also have the text of each program emailed to them every day, along with a link to the broadcast recording.
The Academy of American Poets has its own poem-day feature, called “Poem-a-Day”. Launched during National Poetry Month in 2006, Poem-a-Day highlights new and previously published poems by contemporary poets on weekdays and classic poems on weekends.
Since subscribing to both services last April, I’ve enjoyed receiving poems each morning. Reading at least one poem a day has also been like an intellectual vitamin, giving me a brief taste of literature even on busy days. Last April, I wondered if I could remind myself to read a poem each morning. Now, deep in summer, I wonder if I could ever do without it.
4. What did the editor think of poetry?
A. It could improve our daily life. B. It was as important as newspapers.
C. It had a small but faithful readership. D. It should be composed in the morning.
5. How did the author conduct his experiment?
A By listening to radios and writing emails.
B. By contributing poems to a newspaper.
C. By creating resolutions over breakfast.
D. By making use of online services.
6 What can be learned about The Writer’s Almanac?
A. It is available nationwide on radio stations.
B. It mails paper poems to its fans daily.
C. It provides recordings of classic poems only.
D. It focuses on introducing new poets daily.
7. What does the last paragraph reveal about the author?
A. It has taken years for him to love literature.
B. He is wondering how to continue his conduct.
C. He has developed a deep appreciation for poetry.
D. It has benefited him a lot as a newspaperman.
C
Ocean litter is a major environmental problem around the world. To rise to this challenge, a research team at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) has now developed an autonomous (自动) diving robot that can discover and collect litter. It uses an AI system to analyze objects with ultrasound (超声波) and cameras, picks them up and brings them to the surface.
The entire system consists of an unmanned service boat with a small underwater search robot and the diving robot. The service boat supplies the underwater robots with power and data by cable and uses ultrasound to map the seabed. After a search robot scans the seabed, the diving robot dives to the rubbish, collects it, and puts it into a floating waste container.
Equipped with a camera and sonar (声呐), the system can identify rubbish even in dark and unclear water. Since hardly any image material is available for underwater objects that could help to train the search robot, the team labeled (标记) more than 7,000 pictures to teach the AI to tell rubbish from natural objects. After recognizing waste, the AI displays it in 3D to determine how to grasp (抓取) the object safely and firmly.
The diving robot’s four-fingered hand can squeeze (捏) with a force of 4,000 newtons and grasp objects weighing up to 250 kg. However, special sensors enable it to gauge how much force it can apply without causing damage. This prevents plastic buckets from breaking, for example, or glass bottles from breaking into pieces.
Tested in the Port of Marseille in France and the Port of Hamburg in Germany, the system is expected to be widely used between 2030 and 2033. Project manager Bart De Schutter believes this technology could be game-changing in addressing ocean litter.
8. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. How the system works. B. How the service boat is powered.
C. Where the rubbish goes. D. What the search robot is made of.
9. How does the system tell rubbish from natural objects underwater?
A. By working with divers to check different objects.
B. By measuring the weight and size of the objects.
C. By being trained with over 7,000 labeled pictures.
D. By using a special cable to display the objects in 3D.
10. What does the underlined word “gauge” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Prove. B. Imagine. C. Judge. D. Increase.
11. What is Bart De Schutter’s attitude toward the future of the technology?
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Unconcerned. D. Unclear.
D
Regent honeyeaters (王吸蜜鸟), once common in southeastern Australia, are now critically endangered, with only a few hundred left in the wild. As their numbers declined, their unique soft song, used by males to defend territory and attract mates, also disappeared. Young males started singing songs of other species or simpler versions of the original. Those born in zoos under a captive breeding (圈养繁殖的) program didn’t learn the traditional song at all.
To restore the song, scientists employed skilled honeyeaters as singing instructors. They found that regent honeyeaters familiar with the standard song could teach it to young, captive-born birds before they were released into the wild. Some of these birds even passed the song on to the next generation.
Daniel Appleby, a conservation biologist, emphasized the importance of a stable song for the birds’ reproduction. The study highlights the need to consider animal culture in conservation efforts, as socially learned behaviors like birdsong are crucial for species survival.
The honeyeater population dropped sharply in the 20th century due to habitat loss. With fewer birds around, young ones had little chance to learn the traditional song. A similar issue arose in captive breeding programs, where young birds had limited exposure to adult males during the critical song-learning period. As a result, zoo-born birds sang “strange, simple songs” and struggled to attract wild mates.
Appleby and his team tried various strategies at Taronga Zoo and Taronga Western Plains Zoo. Playing recordings of the wild song through speakers failed, but real-life tutors (导师) — two wild-born males — succeeded. Young birds living alongside these tutors began to sing the traditional song. Maintaining reduced student-to-teacher proportions, with no more than five students per tutor, was key to success. Many tutored birds produced songs indistinguishable from the wild version, and some even became tutors themselves.
The tutoring program continues, with researchers monitoring the birds’ survival and the spread of the traditional song in the wild. This study shows that captive breeding programs can take concrete steps to preserve the culture of threatened species, as socially learned behaviors play a vital role in animals’ survival and reproduction.
12. How did scientists succeed in bringing back the honeyeaters’ song?
A. By using skilled singing coaches.
B. By training young birds intensively.
C By playing recordings of the wild songs.
D. By introducing new species to the habitat.
13. What can be inferred about the young regent honeyeaters born in zoos?
A. They had no problem reproducing. B. They sang soft and complex songs.
C. They met difficulty securing wild mates. D. They composed indistinguishable songs.
14. What contributes to the success of the tutoring program?
A. Keeping small class sizes. B. Having a large number of tutors.
C. Providing a rich diet for the birds. D. Using advanced recording equipment.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Captive Breeding Programs for Honeyeaters B. Saving Regent Honeyeaters’ Traditional Song
C. The Importance of Birdsong in Conservation D. Reproducing Regent Honeyeaters in Australia

How to avoid fighting with your family on your summer vacation?
If you have a trip coming up on this summer vacation and are concerned there’s going to be an intergenerational blow-up (发脾气), don’t worry. ____16____
Think about what gets you upset ahead of time. ____17____ For instance, when your cousin often does that thing where he goes on and on about how much money he makes. Research shows that when you have low expectations of another person’s behavior, you’re more likely to give them a pass when they act in an annoying or problematic way.
____18____ To avoid feeling stuck in a shitty situation, Lucas suggests coming prepared with an escape plan. “Figure out how you can exit the environment and get time with yourself” if you unexpectedly get triggered, he suggests. Go to work out in the fitness room for a half hour; camp out at a nearby coffee shop; take yourself on a solo walk. ____19____ If your relative isn’t buying your excuse, say you need to grab a new room key, use the bathroom, or want to check out the temperature of the ocean.
Have an exit strategy. If so, you don’t collapse (like you have in the past) when you butt heads with a family member. Fred was a hardworking college student with a deep passion for singing. He often performed at college events, where his beautiful voice was widely appreciated. Despite Fred’s dream of becoming a professional singer, his father disapproved, believing that music was not a stable career and wishing him to become an educated person.
Fred respected his father’s wishes, but it saddened him that his father wasn’t supporting his choice. Despite the discouragement, Fred continued to pursue his passion. Whenever there was a talent show at his college, he would impress the audience with his soulful voice.
As the college farewell (告别) program approached everyone was busy practicing their parts: some for poetry, some for acting, and Fred for his song. One evening, while singing in his room, Fred was overheard by his father. Angry, he stormed into Fred’s room, shouting, “I told you to stop singing and focus on your studies! Yet here you are, still practicing singing!” As he shouted, he grabbed the notebook with song lyrics from Fred’s hands and tore it into pieces. Fred stood silent, his eyes filled with tears. Feeling disheartened, Fred decided not to participate in the college farewell program, and his absence made his classmates regretful for a long time.
Some time later, one day while surfing on his phone, Fred saw an advertisement for a song competition. The competition was to be held in another city, where his uncle lived, and Fred was eager to participate in the competition. He called his uncle and poured his heart out, begging for help. His uncle, who always loved and encouraged him to pursue his dreams, listened patiently. Understanding Fred’s situation, he called Fred’s father and convinced him to allow Fred to stay with him for a few days.
The next day, Fred arrived at his uncle’s place. His spirits lifted as his uncle welcomed him warmly. Fred was enthusiastic and shared his excitement about the competition. His uncle smiled, seeing the fire of determination in Fred’s eyes.
On the day of the competition, Fred felt a mix of excitement and nervousness.

D. Unclear.
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. C 11. B

C. By playing recordings of the wild songs.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. A 15. B

【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“As a result, zoo-born birds sang “strange, simple songs” and struggled to attract wild mates.(因此,动物园出生的鸟儿唱出的是“奇怪、单调的歌声”,并且难以吸引到野生的配偶)”可知,在动物园出生的幼年王吸蜜鸟很难找到合适的野生伴侣。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Maintaining reduced student-to-teacher proportions, with no more than five students per tutor, was key to success.(保持学生与教师的比例降低,并且每位导师指导的学生不超过五名,这是取得成功的关键所在)”可知,保持较小的班级规模促成了这个辅导项目的成功。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段“To restore the song, scientists employed skilled honeyeaters as singing instructors. They found that regent honeyeaters familiar with the standard song could teach it to young, captive-born birds before they were released into the wild. Some of these birds even passed the song on to the next generation.(为了恢复这种鸣唱,科学家们聘请了熟练的吸蜜鸟担任歌唱教练。

Space can allow you to slow down and tend to your own emotions and needs. ____20____ So you can have more patience and tolerance for your relatives (and all the shitty things they do) when you rejoin them.

Luoyang is one of the cities in china ___1___ artistic, religious and scientific cultures all once developed like never before.考查关系副词。Luoyang是先行词,在定语从句中充当地点状语成分,故填where。
2:句中已有谓语动词,动词与所修饰词有被动关系,说明需用非谓语动词的过去分词形式。
Located in the middle reaches of the Yellow River in Central China’s Henan Province and ___4___ (surround) by mountains and plains, Luoyang occupies ___5___ important strategic (战略的) location.考查非谓语动词。根据and判断此处与Located并列用非谓语动词,包围和大山是被动关系,用过去分词,故填 surrounded。

As the college farewell (告别) program approached, everyone was busy practicing their parts: some for poetry, some for acting, and Fred for his song.
