The Terracotta Army is one of the must-visit attractions for all travellers to China. The attraction is located in Xi’an, in west China’s Shaanxi Province.
What’s special?
The Terracotta Army is the buried army of Qinshihuang, an ancient Chinese emperor. These ancient sculptures were built and buried over two thousand years ago near the city of Xi’an. They were discovered in 1974 by farmers digging a well looking for underground water. Over eight thousand terracotta warriors and horses have been uncovered since then. Each warrior is made of clay (黏土). They are around two metres tall. The sculptures are so detailed that it is possible to guess the age, rank and personality of each one. None of the soldiers are the same.
The best time to visit
The Terracotta Army is an indoor attraction, which is not likely to be affected by weather, so it can be visited all year round.
As the museum is one of the must-visit attractions in China, it is crowded most of the time. We advise our customers to avoid the following periods when the museum is particularly crowded:
·National Day Holiday (1st-7th October), when it is fully packed.
·Labour Day Holiday (1st-3rd May)
Weather in winter is dry, cold and the least comfortable, and it’s also the worst season for air quality, but it’s also low season.
Travel style: private, group or independent?
A private tour means a lot of flexibility (灵活性), and you will be well taken care of by a private guide and a driver. The museum is crowded most of the time, but our guides know how to escape the crowds, and help you to enjoy more in the museum. See our 3-Day Terracotta Warriors Private Tour.
Going with a group you won’t get lost, but it lacks flexibility and personal service. Travelling on your own, you may meet a lot of trouble, such as wasting time on finding a taxi or public bus to the attraction, lining up for tickets, reading maps, making sense of Chinese signs, etc.
1. What can we know about the Terracotta Army?
A. The warriors are made of clay.
B. The warriors are of the same age.
C. It is closed on rainy days.
D. It is usually displayed outdoors.
2. Which is the best time to avoid crowds?
A. Summer holidays. B. National Day Holiday.
C. Labour Day Holiday. D. Clear winter days.
3. If you want to travel with least trouble, which should you choose?
A. A private tour. B. A tour group.
C. Travelling on your own. D. A family tour.

For the first time, scientists have grown plants in moon soil collected by NASA’s Apollo astronauts.
F Seeing the results, Robert Ferl of the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences said, “Plants actually grow in lunar stuff. Are you kidding me?” He and other researchers planted thale cress, a small flowering plant, in moon soil returned from the Apollo missions.
F The good news was that all of the seeds grew. The bad news was that after the first week, the lunar soil stressed the plants so much that they grew slowly. Most of the moon plants were stunted. The longer the soil was exposed to radiation (辐射) and solar wind on the moon, the worse the plants seemed to do. The soil collected by the Apollo 11 mission was the least helpful for growth.
F Simon Gilroy of the University of Wisconsin-Madison said, “This is a big step forward to know that you can grow plants.” Gilroy added. “The real next step is to go and do it on the surface of the moon.”
F Moon dirt is full of glass particles (颗粒), which got in the Apollo lunar landers and wore down the moonwalkers’ spacesuits. One solution might be to use younger geologic (地质的) spots on the moon, like lava flows (媳岩流), for digging up soil. The environment also could be changed by adding special nutrient mixtures or artificial lighting.
F Only 382 kilograms of moon rocks and soil were brought back by the six Apollo crews that landed on the moon. Most of them are still locked away, forcing researchers to experiment with soil made of volcanic ash on Earth. In 2021. NASA finally gave out 12 grams of soil to the University of Florida researchers for the planting experiment. NASA said the timing for such an experiment was right, with the space agency looking to put astronauts back on the moon soon.
7. What can we know about Ferl’s experiment?
A. The plants planted grew quickly.
B. It ended after the Apollo missions.
C. It was conducted on the moon surface.
D. The results made him feel unbelievable.
8. What does the underlined word “stunted” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Appealing. B. Super. C. Unsafe. D. Undeveloped.
9. Which of the following can be inferred about soils from younger geologic spots?
A. They mainly include lava flows.
B. They can serve as artificial lighting.
C. They might have fewer glass particles.
D. They have nothing to do with moon dirt.
10. Why did NASA believe the suitable timing arrived?
A. More astronauts would be sent to collect moon soil again.
B. Some moon soil had been shared with other researchers.
C. Apollo crews returned with enough moon dirt and rocks.
D. Researchers were unwilling to experiment with earth stuff.
Enthusiastic travelers may have already heard of “regenerative tourism” along with the idea of sustainability (持续性). Whenever we travel-no matter where or how-we are leaving an impact on the environment and the world surrounding us. While sustainable tourism takes positive steps toward limiting that footprint in order for us to protect environments for future generations, regenerative tourism takes this idea one step further.
Regenerative tourism means “the idea that tourists should leave a place in better condition than it was before”. For example, when visiting a garden, each person plants a tree to further build the environment instead of leaving no trace (痕迹).
In a way, regenerative tourism involves travelers to be active in their acts of sustainability. Another great example of this is any act of clean-up. This is especially popular on major beaches and in parks where there’s always rubbish to pick up and waste to remove. While travelers certainly don’t need to join in a community clean-up while on vacation (unless they want to), the idea of being involved is very much the same.
Joining in regenerative tourism has personal and environmental benefits. Jeffrey Skibins, an associate professor in entertainment and park management, says, “Many tourists report feelings of deep personal satisfaction and a stronger connection to nature. Additionally, conservation (保护) behaviors enable tourists to develop life-long learning around these issues and continue these behaviors at home.”
Regenerative means “to renew and revive”, which is exactly what many travelers are doing to help environments recover. Depending on where one plans to travel, there might be more ways to help than originally realized. By further encouraging damaged environments to be renewed through travel rather than being negatively impacted, we can slowly help to rebuild the world’s most beautiful landscapes.
11. What is the aim of regenerative tourism?
A. To further improve the environment.
B. To limit the footprint of human beings.
C. To keep a place in its original condition.
D. To dramatically promote global economy.
12. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Designing a bright future for our life.
B. Taking part in a community clean-up.
C. Renewing our ideas about environments.
D. Getting active in the acts of sustainability.
13. What does Jeffrey Skibins think of regenerative tourism?
A. It makes travelers closely connected.
B. It gives personal satisfaction to travelers.
C. It leaves a short-term effect on tourists.
D. It helps tourists improve their learning ability.
14. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Regenerative tourism invites travelers to do their part
B. Travelling patterns make a difference to the environment
C. Conservation behavior enjoys its popularity among households
D. The idea of sustainability takes root in all enthusiastic travelers

15. With gas prices rising and airport security lines snaking longer than ever, why not book your next domestic vacation on a train? Compared to other alternatives, it’s comfortable and relaxing. Here is some advice on how to make a trip by rail as pleasant as possible.
Plan ahead. Most long-distance trains, especially the sleeping car accommodations, sell out very quickly. ①________________ But no matter when you travel, it’s a good idea to make your reservations at least 90days in advance.
Use a travel agent. Consider turning your travel plan over to a travel agent and letting him double-check all the details, make suggestions, and then handle the actual reservations. A good one can sometimes find you discounted tickets. ②________________ Then you won’t have to walk through several cars on a moving train three times a day for your meals.
Bring a blanket. When you’re riding on trains, you won’t be provided with a blanket for free, even if your trip is an overnight one. ③________________ In the summer in particular, the air conditioning can make them quite cold.
Arrive early. Most trains operate just once a day and some run only three times a week, so missing yours can be a disaster. ④________________ Note: The times listed on the schedules are departure times, not arrival times.
Have fun. ⑤________________ Read a book, knit, do a crossword puzzle, or simply watch the world unfold outside the window. To calculate your speed as you do, divide 3,600 (the number of seconds in an hour) by the number of seconds it takes you to travel one mile (the distance between two mileposts). If it takes the train 53 second s to travel one mile, you’re going about 67.92 mph.
A. Train trips aren’t for impatient types.
B. You’ll have views from both sides of the train.
C. The temperature on rail cars is often hard to control.
D. That’s particularly true during busy summer months.
E. You might have to wait longer than 24 hours to catch the next one.
F. Chances are the cost will be a lot less than the cost of one bedroom.
G. He may also book you in a sleeping car that’s right next to the diner.

六、读后续写
33. At fourteen, I was the new girl at a rural school in an apple-orchard valley. There were twenty-eight kids in my class, which was equally divided between boys and girls. It was the tightly knit group of twelve girls that kept me an outsider. They teased me about my bright red hair, my height, my clothes, my shoe size, my accent and anything else they could think of.
I cried myself to sleep after my parents’ pep talk. They said all the right things like “Ruby, Give it time” and “Once they get to know you, they’ll love you.” I wanted to believe them, but the evidence proved otherwise.
Then, a few months into the school year, my parents’ predictions came true. I was playing out in left field for the girls’ baseball team when a ball rocketed right at me. I put my mitt (棒球手套) up as a shield, and the ball packed itself right into my glove. That play saved the game, and we beat the boys’ team for the first time.
Well, after that, the girls couldn’t just exclude me from the victory party. It turned out they liked my sense of humor, and a few actually said they wished they had my mass of bright red hair. Suddenly, I was “in.” Friendships grew, and soon I was included in the overnights and birthday parties.
Spring break came and went, and we returned to a school of freshly waxed floors, redone notice boards and one new girl. Rosa was tiny and quiet. She scanned the crowded hallway, her gaze flitting from one unfamiliar face to another. Her fingers nervously twisted the belt of her backpack, and every now and then, she would take a small step back, as if trying to make herself smaller.
Instantly, memories of my own first days at this school flooded back. I vividly remembered the feeling of being an outsider, the uncertainty and the longing to fit in.

32.答案:Dear Editor,
I am Li Hua, a senior student from Hong Xing High School. Nowadays, with the development of our society, more and more cultural relics are facing the danger of disappearing. So we must attach importance to the problem and try our best to protect them.
As we all know, cultural relics offer us a great opportunity to learn about what happened in the past. Only when they are preserved well can we pass on our culture from generation to generation. As students, we can make our own contributions to preserve them. For example, we can make apps or websites about some cultural relics to tell people the stories behind them. Besides, we can call on international cooperation if it is too hard for ourselves to preserve some badly-damaged cultural relics.
I hope more and more people will become concerned about protecting our cultural relics.
Sincerely,
Li Hua
33.答案:Without hesitation, I walked up to her, wearing a warm smile. “Hello, I’m Ruby. Welcome toour school! It might seem a bit overwhelming at first, but I’m here to help,” I said softly, trying to put her at ease. Rosa looked up at me, a hint of surprise in her eyes, and then offered a shy smile. Immediately led her on a tour around the school. We visited the library, science labs and art room. While showing her the sports field, I casually mentioned our upcoming baseball practice, and noticed her evident interest, so I decided to invite her to join us.
The next day, just as l expected, Rosa showed up at the baseball practice. She sat on the sidelines, watching intently. I handed her a baseball glove. “Want to give it a try?” I asked. She hesitated for a moment, then nodded. I patiently taught her the basics, from how to hold the bat to the proper way of catching a ball. With each successful catch, her confidence grew. By the end of the afternoon, she was laughing and chatting with the rest of the team, no longer the timid new girl. Rosa had now found her place in our group. Now, she was “in 3”, too.
