Many people liked to listen to him talking because he liked to tell some interesting stories to make people laugh all the time. One day Mark Twain was going to a small town because of his writing. Before he was going to leave, one of his friends said to him that there were always a lot of mosquitoes in the town and told him that he’d better not go there. Mark Twain waved (摇动) his hand and said, “It doesn’t matter. The mosquitoes are no relatives of mine. I don’t think they will come to visit me.” After he arrived at the town, Mark Twain stayed in a small hotel near the station. He went into his room, but when he was just about to have a rest, quite a few mosquitoes flew about him. The waiters felt very sorry about that. “I’m very sorry, Mr Mark Twain. There are too many mosquitoes in our town.” One of them said to him. Mark Twain, however, made a joke, saying to the waiter, “The mosquitoes are very clever. They know my room number. They didn’t come into the wrong room.” What he said made all the people present laugh heartily. But that night Mark Twain slept well. Do you know why? That was because all the waiters in the hotel were driving the mosquitoes away for him during the whole night. 46. That day Mark Twain went to the town _________. A. to see one of his friends B. because he wanted to do something there for his writing C. because he was told there were a lot of mosquitoes there D. to see one of his relatives 47. A. no mosquitoes troubled Mark Twain in the night B. the owner of the hotel told the waiters to look after Mark Twain well at night C. Mark Twain didn’t have a good rest that night D. there were no mosquitoes in the hotel any longer B Do dogs understand us? Be careful what you say around your dog. It might understand more than you think. A border collie named Rico recognizes the names of about 200 objects, say researchers in Germany. The dog also appears to be able to learn new words as easily as a 3-year-old child. Its word-learning skills are as good as those of a parrot or chimpanzee (黑猩猩). In one experiment, the researchers took all 200 items that Rico is supposed to know and divided them into 20 groups of 10 objects. Then the owner told the dog to go and fetch one of the items and bring it back. In four tests, Rico got 37 out of 40 commands right. As the dog couldn’t see anyone to get clues, the scientists believe Rico must understand the meanings of certain words. In another experiment, the scientists took one toy that Rico had never seen before and put it in a room with seven toys whose names the dog already knew. The owner then told Rico to fetch the object, using a word the dog had never heard before. The correct object was chosen in 7 out of 10 tests, suggesting that the dog had worked out the answer by process of elimination (排除法). A month later, Rico remembered half of the new names, which is even more impressive. Rico is thought to be smarter than the average dog. For one thing, Rico is a border collie, a breed (品种) known for its mental abilities. In addition, the 9-year-old dog has been trained to fetch toys by their names since the age of nine months. It’s hard to know if all dogs understand at least some of the words we say. Even if they do, they can’t talk back. Still, it wouldn’t hurt to sweet-talk your dog every now and then. You might just get a big, wet kiss in return! 50. From Paragraph 3 we know that ________. A. animals are as clever as human beings B. dogs are smarter than parrots and chimpanzees C. chimpanzees have very good word-learning skills D. dogs have learning abilities similar to 3-year-old children 51. Both experiments show that ________. A. Rico is smart enough to get all commands right B. Rico can recognize different things including toys C. Rico has developed the ability of learning mathematics D. Rico won’t forget the names of objects once recognizing them 52. Which of the following statements is TRUE? A. The purpose of the experiments is to show the border collie’s mental abilities. B. Rico has a better memory partly because of its proper early training. C. The border collie is world-famous for recognizing objects. D. Rico is born to understand its owner’s commands. 53. What does the writer want to tell us? A. To train your dog. B. To talk to your dog. C. To be friendly to your dog. D. To be careful with your dog. C A Are you interested in “Dream of the Red Mansion (Hong Lou Meng)”? Listen to a lecture on this classical novel. D Some people are lucky enough to be born with a good sense of direction and even if they have only visited a place once, they will be able to find it again years later. I am one of those unfortunate people who have poor sense of direction and I may have visited a place time after time but I still get lost on my way there When I was young I was so shy that I never dared ask complete strangers the way and so I used to wander round in circles and hope that by some chance I would get to the spot I was heading for. I am no longer too shy to ask people for direction, but I often receive replies that puzzle me. Often people do not like to admit that they didn’t know their hometown and will insist on telling you the way, even if they do not know it; others, who are anxious to prove that they know their hometown very well, will give you a long list of directions which you can not possibly hope to remember, and still others do not seem to be able to tell between their left and their right and you find in the end that you are going in the opposite direction to that in which you should be going. If anyone ever asks me the way to somewhere, I always tell them I am a stranger to the town in order to avoid giving them wrong direction but even this can have embarrassing results. Once I was on my way to work when I was stopped by a man who asked me if I would direct him the way to the Sunlight Building. I gave my usual reply, but I had not walked on a few steps when I realized that he had asked for the direction to my office building. However, at this point, I decided it was too late to turn back and search for him out of the crowd behind me as I was going to meet with someone at the office and I did not want to keep him waiting. Imagine my embarrassment when my secretary showed in the very man who had asked for the direction of my office and his astonishment when he recognized me as the person he had asked. 59. What is the writer going to do when someone asks him for direction? A. He will direct the right way to the person willingly. B. He will reply to it by the means of being a stranger to the town. C. He will give the very person long list of direction. D. He is going to show the man an opposite direction. 60. Why did the writer consider himself to be an unlucky dog? A. Because of his poor sense of direction. B. Because he always forget the way to home. C. Because he did not have any friends. D. Because he used to be shy and dared not ask others the way. 61. How did the visitor feel when he was showed into the very room? A. He felt strange. B. He felt embarrassed. C. He felt very sad. D. He felt astonished. 62. Who showed the right way to the interviewee according to the passage? A. Someone we don’t know. B. The writer did it for himself. C. The secretary did so. D. A warm-hearted old lady did such a thing. E What’s your dream holiday? Watching wildlife in Kenya? Boating down the Amazon? Sunbathing in Malaysia? New chances are opening up all the time to explore the world. So we visit travel agents, compare packages and prices, and pay our money. We know what our holiday costs us. But do we know what it might cost someone else. It’s true that many poorer countries now depend on tourism for foreign income. Unfortunately, though, tourism often harms the local people more than it helps them. It might cost their homes and lands. In Myanmar,5,200 people were forced to leave their homes among the pagodas (佛塔) in Bagan so that tourists could visit the pagodas. Tourism might also cost the local people their livelihood and dignity. Local workers often find only menial (卑微的) jobs in the tourist industry. And most of the profits do not help the local economy. Instead, profits return to the tour operators in wealthier countries. When the Maasai people in Tanzania were driven from their lands, some moved to city slums. Others now make a little money selling souvenirs (纪念品) or posing for photos. Problems like these were noticed more than 20 years ago. But now some non-government organizations, tour operators and local governments are working together to begin correcting them. Tourists, too, are putting on the pressure. The result is responsible tourism, or “ethical tourism”. Ethical tourism has people at its heart. New international agreements and codes of conduct can help protect the people’s lands, homes, economies and cultures. The beginnings are small, though, and the problems are complex. But take heart. The good news is that everyone, including us, can play a part to help the local people in the places we visit. Tour operators and companies can help by making sure that local people work in good conditions and earn reasonable wages. They can make it a point to use only locally owned hotel, restaurants and guide services. They can share profits fairly to help the local economy. And they can involve the local people in planning and managing tourism. What can tourists do? First, we can ask tour companies to provide information about the conditions of local citizens. We can then make our choices and tell them why. And while we’re abroad, we can: Buy local foods and products, not imported ones. Pay a fair price for goods and services and not bargain for the cheapest price. Avoid flaunting wealth. Ask before taking photographs of people. They are not just part of the landscape! Let’s enjoy our holiday and make sure others do, too. 63. What is probably the best title for the article? A. Tourism Causes Bad Effects B. Tourism Calls for Good Behavior C. Holidays Bring a Lot of Fun D. Holidays Cost More Than You Think 64. Which of the following is not mentioned? A. Local people were well paid to leave their lands. B. Tourists may stay in hotels opened by local people. C. Local people are mainly provided with low-paying work. D. Tourists could bargain with local people for a reasonable price. 65. The underlined phrase “take heart” means “________”. A. pay attention B. take care C. cheer up D. calm down 六、单词拼写(5分) 根据句意及所给汉语或首字母提示,在横线上写出各单词的正确形式。(每空限填一词) 66. Worse still, a tree’s ecological value is nine times the value of the chopsticks made from it. Trees are truly essential for a good environment. They clean the air and prevent floods. However, producing disposable chopsticks causes serious deforestation, leading to soil erosion and climate change. I suggest we take strong measures to solve this problem. First, bring our own reusable chopsticks. Second, restaurants should stop offering disposables. Finally, the government should limit production. Let’s protect our precious forests before it’s too late. Yours sincerely Li Hua 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
