I’m a millennial (千禧一代) who grew up in the US during the rise of the modern Internet and someone who has studied Chinese and lived in China for several years now. I’ve now become familiar both with the language and different slang (俚语) words in both Chinese and English. Yet, something that’s always stood out to me when comparing English and Chinese slang is the abundance of numerically-based slang words that work like code words for Chinese expressions. Let’s break down a few and compare.
We can start with 520. This number has a similar pronunciation to “I love you” in Chinese. The closest match I can think of in English to this would be something like “I <3 you” or “I heart you”, representing “I love you”. Still, the Chinese expression can be taken a step further through puns (双关语) using the date to represent the phrase in ways that English cannot.
Another number-based pun is “2333”. Now, this one may seem even more confusing to a native English speaker since, if you follow the same pattern, you will find the pronunciation doesn’t seem to relate to any Chinese expression. But here, we get the sound of laughter: ahahaha! Interesting, isn’t it?
Finally, saving the best for last, we have the famous phrase “666”. In Western culture, 666 is rarely seen as a lucky number; instead, it is often associated with evil forces or other unlucky signs. Yet, it is the complete opposite in Chinese, where 666 actually represents three repeated “liu” sounds. The hand gesture representing six—the thumb and little finger outstretched with the other fingers closed—is the same gesture in the US to represent something awesome or cool just happened!
Clearly, slang is dependent on the language and culture it originates from. Thus, things that may seem confusing to someone with a different native language or culture simply take some adaptation to view from the right perspective.
4. What unique feature of Chinese slang is highlighted in the text?
A. It is rich in number-related words. B. It has many humorous expressions.
C. It is affected by the rise of the Internet. D. It has some roots in the English language.
5. Which of the following would the author agree with?
A. “I <3 you” is a direct translation of “520”.
B. Chinese number slang relies on pronunciation.
C. “2333” combines the sounds of four Chinese words.
D. The “six” hand gesture is perceived positively in the US.
6. What does the author suggest about the confusing foreign slang?
A. Focusing on similar slang in our language.
B. Learning about the original use of the slang.
C. Shifting our way of thinking to grasp the meaning.
D. Adapting the meaning from our cultural perspective.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To recommend a way to learn Chinese.
B. To compare slang and the culture behind it.
C. To teach readers to use online slang properly.
D. To clarify common misunderstandings of Chinese.

Will magnesium (镁) supplements help you relax?
Magnesium plays a role in hundreds of bodily processes. The mineral helps regulate heart rate and blood pressure, and is essential for the formation of DNA and proteins. Magnesium also helps make a brain chemical that modulates sleep, appetite and mood. Most of the body’s magnesium comes from food — leafy greens, beans, nuts, bananas, milk and whole grains are rich in it. But sales of supplements, which are formulated with additional substances to create magnesium salts, are soaring. Boosters claim they can aid sleep, lessen stress and depression, and even have cardiovascular (心血管的) benefits. What, though, does the research say about their usefulness?
Begin with magnesium’s proposed sleep benefits. Recent trials to assess its effects, though mostly small, have been promising. In a study published in Nature and Science of Sleep in August 2025, 69 participants with poor sleep were offered a nightly dose of a magnesium compound. After four weeks, they were sleeping slightly better, perhaps owing to magnesium’s role in muscle relaxation. That said, the improvement was modest and unlikely to eliminate sleeplessness.
Another trial, which was industry-sponsored, found broader benefits. 38 American adults took a gram of magnesium L-threonate every night for three weeks. As the researchers noted in 2024, the supplements led to better deep sleep. The intervention group also scored significantly higher on measures of alertness, energy and productivity. An additional finding also stood out: improved mood.
Could magnesium help lift depression? Some small trials have shown promise. Consider a review of seven randomised clinical trials with a total of 325 depressed adult participants that was published in 2023 in the journal Frontiers in Psychiatry. The authors found that those given magnesium compounds experienced a statistically significant drop in depression scores. They noted that magnesium is associated with reduced chemical compounds linked to stress and mood disorders.
Evidence for cardiovascular benefits, however, is weaker. Some studies suggest magnesium supplements can lower blood pressure, but only meaningfully in those who started out with hypertension or a magnesium deficiency called hypomagnesemia. As for strokes (中风), observational studies have linked higher magnesium intake to lower risk, but other factors may have played a role.
All told, a balanced diet will provide enough magnesium for most people, although supplements may help those who struggle to get enough. In its fact sheet on magnesium, updated on January 6th, America’s National Institutes of Health noted that nearly half of Americans consume too little — perhaps owing to the prevalence of heavy processing of food, which drains the mineral.
8. According to the passage, the soaring sales of magnesium supplements are mainly driven by _______.
A. the promotional claims regarding their potential health benefits
B. the insufficient intake of magnesium from daily processed foods
C. the creation of new magnesium salts essential for DNA formation
D. the wide recognition of their superiority over natural food sources
9. What can be learned about the studies on magnesium’s effects?
A. The benefits of magnesium extend beyond rest to cognitive performance.
B. Industry-sponsored trials tend to yield more statistically significant results.
C. Magnesium helps relieve depression by eliminating stress-related chemicals.
D. Muscle relaxation is the definitive biological mechanism for curing sleeplessness.
10. It can be inferred from research on cardiovascular health that _______.
A. observational data is more reliable than results from randomised clinical trials
B. patients with hypertension are advised to replace medication with supplements
C. the link between magnesium and stroke prevention requires further clarification
D. the reduction of blood pressure is exclusive to patients with magnesium deficiency
11. Which of the following best describes the author’s attitude towards magnesium supplements?
A. Apparent disapproval of their commercial marketing.
B. Reluctant acceptance of their considerable popularity.
C. Cautious skepticism about their advertised advantages.
D. Slight preference for supplements over dietary changes.

With growing global energy demands and mounting concerns over pollution and climate change, the shift to clean energy sources is important. While nuclear, wind, and solar energy have played significant roles as alternatives to fossil fuels, hydrogen energy is emerging as a key player in achieving carbon neutrality (碳中和). According to Professor Liu Lifeng, hydrogen has the potential to decarbonize energy — intensive industries, thus contributing to net-zero emission (净零排放) goals.
However, traditional hydrogen production methods are infamous for their significant environmental impact. A cleaner and more sustainable approach involves producing hydrogen from water through electrolysis (电解). Renewable energy-powered electrolysis is a promising method for producing “green” hydrogen, but freshwater shortage may stop large-scale expansion.
To address this challenge, Liu’s team has pioneered a way to produce hydrogen from seawater. Seawater electrolysis, however, faces problems due to the presence of mixtures, which increase energy consumption and cause side reactions. To overcome these barriers, the team proposed a rather ingenious strategy involving the addition of hydrazine (肼) to seawater to enhance efficiency. Additionally, they chose platinum-tellurium foil, a highly effective catalyst (催化剂) that improves the process without causing harmful chemical side effects.
Their innovative device has produced promising results. This means that hydrogen can be produced from seawater without requiring external electricity, hence lowering production costs and improving flexibility in real-world applications.
Despite this significant breakthrough, challenges remain. Platinum, though an effective catalyst, is both costly and environmentally damaging to mine. The team is actively working to develop non-platinum catalysts that are both efficient and sustainable. Furthermore, hydrazine, although effective in reducing energy consumption, is highly harmful to human health. Future research will focus on identifying safer alternatives to hydrazine and further making use of the technology to ensure clean and sustainable hydrogen production.
12. Why is hydrogen energy unique?
A. It is rare on the earth. B. It costs less to produce.
C. It reduces carbon emission. D. It needs no tech advancement.
13. What does the underlined word “ingenious” probably mean in paragraph 3?
A. Long-term. B. Brilliant. C. Complicated. D. Conventional.
14. What can we learn about seawater electrolysis?
A. Hydrazine is safe enough for widespread use.
B. It has completely solved the freshwater shortage.
C. It can operate on its own without needing energy.
D. The current catalyst is costly and bad for the environment.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. The combined impacts of various energy sources.
B. A breakthrough in hydrogen production from seawater.
C. The ways to cut the cost of seawater hydrogen production.
D. The wide application of renewable energy-powered electrolysis.

As I unzipped my lunchbox, the whole place was turned into a spicy curry (咖喱) dream. I immediately hid it under my seat, hoping no one would take notice.
Mom had really outdone herself with masala — our family’s all-time favorite dish back in India. But today, it wasn’t just about me and my lunch. A warm smile on his face, Ricky invited me, a new transfer student from India to New York city, for lunch.
“Ava, come sit here!” Ricky called out, gesturing towards a vacant seat.
As I made my way over, memories of those awkward lunchtimes when I studied in Kansas, one of the most conservative states, flooded back. I could still recall how everyone would wrinkle their noses and stare curiously when I unpacked my Indian food. It always made me feel like an outsider, like I didn’t belong.
Therefore, before my first day in this school, I had demanded my mom pack “normal” western-style food for me. I still remembered the look on her face upon hearing it, as she signed in disappointment and confusion, “Isn’t there a moment when you feel proud of your origin?” That was hurting, but not more hurting than others’ giggles and whispers. Honestly, long queues were common in Indian restaurants in New York city, a cultural melting pot, but I wouldn’t take that risk.
Unfortunately, this morning, Mom had forgotten to make sandwich or any “normal” food, so I had to bring leftovers from our dinner. At the thought of the possible oh-no-second (社死), I felt like being thrown into darkness.
However, before I came back to reality, Ricky noticed my sneaking (躲躲藏藏). “What do you have for lunch?” he asked, his eyes twinkling with interest. I tried to brush it off (搪塞), claiming I wasn’t hungry. But Ricky wouldn’t let it go, and before I could protest, he had the lid of my lunchbox open and I prepared myself for such familiar responses as “Ew” or “What is that?”
注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
However, I did not get what I was expecting.

Dear Mr. Smith,
I am writing to share my proposal for the upcoming “AI-Enhanced Learning Week.”
To better navigate this digital era, I suggest setting up an “AI Ethics Debate Corner.” This activity provides a great opportunity for us to discuss the boundaries of using AI in our assignments. It will not only help students realize the risks of over-reliance on technology but also sparks our enthusiasm for independent thinking.
In my view, while embracing AI as a powerful tool, we must remain self-disciplined to ensure our creativity isn’t replaced by algorithms. Hope my idea could be considered.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】However, I did not get what I was expecting. Ricky took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and savored the aroma of the masala. Instead of the usual stares and whispers, there was only interest on Ricky’s face. His face lit up with a broad smile, asking, “You mum made masala for your lunch?” Before I could make a response, he added: “I could be dying of envy! You know what, last Sunday, my parents and I queued up for three hours in harsh cold in fifth Avenue for the new India restaurant.” He enjoyed every bite, nodding his head in approval. It was a welcome change from the stares and whispers I had grown accustomed to.
After school, I found Mom preparing sandwich for tomorrow’s lunch. I came over and asked if I could have palak paneer in my lunchbox, which made her a bit confused. Finally, I told her about my experience with Ricky and how he had enjoyed my food. Mom’s face lit up with joy. “I’m glad he liked it,” she said. “And I’m even happier that you’re starting to feel proud of your roots again.” She paused and looked at me seriously. “Your culture, your traditions, and your food are all a part of who you are.” I nodded, feeling a sense of relief wash over me. Mom’s words had given me the courage to embrace my identity and share my culture with others.
