Last December, when An Lingfei, a doctor from an Inner Mongolia medical team, arrived in Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda (卢旺达), he set up a center in the Masaka District Hospital. Since then, the China-Rwanda Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Treatment Center has increased in popularity.
According to An, the center now receives an average of more than 30 people daily, with most of them suffering from lower back pain or knee and ankle joint (踝关节) pain. Rwanda is known as the land of a thousand hills. Locals often have to walk on mountain roads year-round, which can lead to joint stress.
“TCM has great advantages in treating these diseases, and the effects (效果) are very good,” An said. “The center now provides most kinds of TCM treatments, allowing local people to experience Eastern medicine.”
Naomin, a 60-year-old patient, is amazed by TCM. She was unable to walk due to serious pain in both knees and ankles. But after a month of treatment at the center, she is now able to walk around with a walking stick. “The treatment has been a huge help,” she said.
Another patient, Mukagatare, said that his back pain disappeared after three TCM treatments. According to him, doctors at the local hospitals had been unable to make a clear diagnosis (诊断) after many examinations, let alone reduce the pain.
Besides treating patients, the center also educates locals about TCM and Chinese culture.
Up to now, TCM has spread to nearly 200 countries and areas with its worldwide influence continuously growing. “From treating a common cold to chronic (慢性的) and difficult diseases, TCM can all play an important role,” a Chinese expert said.
24. Why do many locals in Rwanda suffer from joint pain?
A. Because their average ages are over sixty. B. Because they are given a wrong diagnosis.
C. Because they can’t go to the local hospitals. D. Because they often walk on mountain roads.
25. What improvement did Naomin achieve after a month of TCM treatment?
A. Her back pain disappeared. B. Her knees didn’t hurt anymore.
C. She could move around again. D. She didn’t need a walking stick.
26. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The local hospitals in Rwanda are not responsible.
B. There are no effective ways to treat chronic diseases.
C. TCM will have increasing popularity around the world.
D. An’s center mainly focuses on spreading Chinese culture.

16-year-old Harry Moore writes about his hobby, tennis.
My parents have always loved tennis and they’re members of a tennis club. My older brother was really good at it and they supported him— taking him to lessons all the time. So I guess when I announced that I wanted to be a tennis champion when I grew up I just intended for them to notice me. My mother laughed. She knew I couldn’t possibly be serious, I was just a 4-year-old kid!
Later, I joined the club’s junior coaching group and finally took part in my first proper contest (比赛), confident that my team would do well. We won, which was fantastic, but I wasn’t so successful. I didn’t even want to be in the team photo because I didn’t feel I deserved (应得的) to be. When my coach asked what happened in my final match, I didn’t know what to say. I couldn’t believe I’d lost – I knew I was the better player. But every time I attacked, the other player defended (防守) brilliantly. I couldn’t explain the result.
After that, I decided to listen more carefully to my coach because he had lots of tips. I realized that you need the right attitude (态度) to be a winner. On court I have a plan but sometimes the other guy will do something unexpected so I’ll change it. If I lose a point, I do my best to forget it and find a way to win the next one.
At tournaments, it’s impossible to avoid players who explode in anger. Lots of players can be negative—including myself sometimes. Once I got so angry that I nearly broke my racket! But my coach has helped me develop ways to control those feelings. After all, the judges have a hard job and you just have to accept their decisions.
My coach demands that I train in the gym to make sure I’m strong right to the end of a tournament. I’m getting good results: my shots are more accurate and I’m beginning to realize that with hard work there’s a chance that I could be a champion one day.
27. What did Harry do after he lost his first contest?
A. He quit the team. B. He broke his racket.
C. He blamed the judges. D. He listened more to his coach.
28. What does Harry try to remember when he’s on the court?
A. Try to follow your game plan. B. Be sure to respect the other player.
C. Don’t care too much about your mistakes. D. Don’t let the other player surprise you.
29. What is the main lesson Harry learned?
A. Talent matters most. B. Prove yourself by winning.
C. Attitude and hard work are key. D. Family are always by your side.
30. What may a sports reporter write about Harry now?
A. Harry needs to believe in his own abilities and stop depending on good luck when he plays.
B. Harry has really grown up since his first tournament and discovered that tennis is a battle of minds not just rackets.
C. Harry looked exhausted when he finished his last match so maybe he should think about working out.
D. Harry could be a great player but he needs to find a coach to take him all the way to the big competitions.

Could you imagine a future where you can think about a message to send to a friend, and your phone sends it for you? Or where paralyzed people can easily learn to walk again? Or if you wanted to make art, you could just think of it in your mind and send it to your phone? This future may be coming soon!
In the past month, a big news story came out. A man who has been paralysed can now walk again, because of brain chips(芯片). These chips are built in the users’ brains and use Bluetooth technology to let them control digital devices, like smartphones and computers, simply by thinking.
It might sound like telekinesis (心灵遥感), but this once science-fiction idea is now becoming reality and it could soon be available to more people. This technology could have amazing influences on people with different disabilities, but there are some worries.
Many people are worried that there will be long-term effects of the brain chips, which could harm a person’s health. Many of these companies first try using the brain chips on monkeys, which some people say is very cruel.
Then there is a big worry about mental (思想的) privacy. People fear that if brain chips can read brain signals, companies or governments might one day be able to look into our inner thoughts. Could this technology be misused, changing from improving ability to controlling minds?
Finally, the problem of fairness (公平) has appeared. If this technology moves from medical treatment to ability improvement, will it create an unfair advantage for those who can afford it? Will people with brain chips have better chances in education and employment than those without? That is why, more than ever before, we will need lawmakers to design boundaries that make sure a fair chance for us all.
Some think there are lots of advantages, and brain chips will help many people. For others, the technology is too risky and harmful. We will have to wait and see.
31. What happened to the paralyzed man?
A. He could send messages to friends. B. He could walk again with brain chips.
C. He learned to make art with his mind. D. He got a better job after treatment.
32. What can we infer from the sentence it could soon be available to more people?
A. The technology is already widely used.
B. Only rich people can afford the technology.
C. The technology is too dangerous to be used.
D. The technology may become more common.
33. How is the passage mainly organized?
A. By telling a moving story about a disabled man.
B. By introducing and discussing the new technology.
C. By asking questions and answering them one by one.
D. By describing the development of brain chips step by step.
34. What can we learn from people’s worries about this technology?
A. All people agree that brain chips are safe for human health.
B. Brain chips have no influence on people’s privacy at all.
C. People are worried that brain chips may be used in bad ways.
D. Brain chips will surely help rich people get a better education.
35. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Brain Chips: Hope or Risk? B. How Monkeys Help Science
C. Brain Chips: A New Way to Walk D. The Future of Mind-Reading Phones

The volunteers in Better Blue are not only made up of diving coaches like Liu, but also pilots, lawyers, doctors and so on. All of them should know what they need to know about the sea.
Every year, 12 million tons of plastic waste flow into the ocean. Sea animals like turtles often lose their lives because of eating plastic or fishing nets. It hopes to raise marine (海洋的) protection awareness among the public, invite people to protect the endangered sea animals and encourage people to think about how to make the ocean develop in a friendly way.
Dive Against Debris is an activity organized by Better Blue to protect the ocean. The activity needs volunteers with greater diving skills. In this project, divers go into the water and fish out rubbish, which is then separated into different groups. They do this at several fixed locations in the Bay Area of Shenzhen every month. The work also includes checking which rubbish often appears in the area, doing a research on why this kind of rubbish is the most and making suggestions to reduce the pollution.
Marine protection is not limited to collecting rubbish. It also includes marine protection education. On weekdays, Liu volunteers to teach children about marine protection in local schools. Volunteers like him teach marine science to make children realize that land-based rubbish can also pollute the ocean. Researchers from local universities also take part in such activities.
With diving becoming popular, people are more willing to learn about marine protection. They come with their equipment, dive into the waters, get to know the underwater world and protect it.

Volunteering Warms Our Life
Last week, I took part in the volunteer activity at the old people’s home. I joined it because I wanted to do something meaningful to help others and learn to care for the elderly.
As a volunteer, I did many things. I sang songs and played music for the old people to cheer them up. I also talked with them and listened to their stories. Some of my classmates helped clean their rooms.
