In March 2026, a team of middle school students did something amazing. They used an AI coding tool called Codex to create a mobile app that helps elderly people remember to take their medicine on time. The app, named “MediPal”, has four functions: medicine schedule with pictures, voice alerts, refill reminders, and an emergency call button. Uniquely, it works offline. And it won first prize in the National Youth Technology Innovation Competition.
The team leader, 14-year-old Zhang Wei, said the idea came from his grandmother. “She takes five kinds of pills daily but often forgets which to take and when,” he explained. “I wanted a simple tool but had no coding experience—then I found Codex.” Codex is an AI system made by OpenAI. It turns natural language commands into computer code. For example, typing “Make a ‘morning medicine’ button that shows a red pill picture when clicked” generates real code.
At first, the students struggled with vague(模糊的)commands. They spent two hours every afternoon learning to use Codex: they watched simple tutorial videos, adjusted their wording again and again, and even asked their computer teacher for tips. After one month of practice, they could give clear commands to Codex. Then came the hard part of testing: they made over 200 versions of the app. They first asked their own grandparents to try it, then visited three nursing homes and talked to 45 senior citizens. Many said the text on most apps was too small to read, and some couldn’t hear the weak voice reminders. So the team made the buttons three times larger than usual and adjusted the voice to be louder and slower. They also added a function to let users set their own reminder times. “The hardest part wasn’t coding—Codex handled that,” said 13-year-old Li Na. “It was understanding elderly users’ real needs and adapting based on feedback.”
The local government will offer free downloads for seniors in the area starting in July. Zhang’s team is now working on an English version.

C. They added a function to let users set their own reminder times.
D. They adjusted the senior citizens’ voice to be louder and slower.
54. (原创)Which of the following statements about the development process of MediPal is TRUE ?
A. The team created the app without any help from others.
B. The app was tested on over 200 senior citizens before its release.
C. The hardest part of the project was programming the complex computer code.

We often tap the like icon online many times a day. After posting photos or articles, we keep looking over screens to watch the number of likes go up. This common daily behavior brings up an interesting question: why do people love the like button so much?
In 2018, a brain scientist named Lauren Sherman did a special study to find the answer. She chose 58 teenagers as test subjects. First, every teen picked some photos they had shared online before. Later, they looked at all these photos on a specially made social media app with a like button. While watching and clicking likes, they stayed inside an fMRI machine, which could record their brain activities clearly.
The test results were clear: when teens saw their own photos with plenty of likes, their brains became very active. Besides, photos with more likes caused stronger brain reactions than those with few likes. It turns out people not only enjoy receiving likes themselves but also tend to favor posts already liked by other users.
Nicholas Christakis, an expert from Yale University, explains the reason from human evolution(进化). Most animals learn new skills only from their own mistakes and practices, but a small group of animal kinds called primates(灵长类) can learn lessons from other members. Early human ancestors(祖先) used this special skill to stay alive: they copied useful successful skills and stayed away from others’ wrong choices.
This special learning ability leads to two human features. First, humans accept a mild ranking rule: animals become leaders through fighting, while people follow those who share useful experience. Second, people form the habit of thanks-giving—giving likes is a warm way to thank others and push more online sharing.
Human evolution shapes not only our body but also our inner feelings. Getting likes makes us pleased, and sending likes to warm others also brings happiness. That’s why the like button becomes widely popular: its success lies in basic natural features of human beings.

Bird-watching is more than just a fun hobby; it is a bridge between people and nature. For James Speirs, a 48-year-old bird lover in Hong Kong, this interest started in his childhood in South Africa. However, it was not until 2022, when bird-watching became popular worldwide, that he decided to take it seriously.hoopoe
Speirs once lived in Beijing. One day, while visiting the Olympic Forest Park, he heard a sound that surprised him—it was the call of a hoopoe. Speirs used to think this bird only lived in Africa. “I never knew hoopoes could be found in China,” he said. “It was amazing to see the same bird so far away from its home.” This experience taught him an important lesson: birds fly freely across countries, showing that the world is one big system.
A big part of Speirs’ hobby is recording what he sees using an app called eBird. Developed by scientists, this app allows common people to become “citizen scientists”. Whenever users mark down the birds they see, they provide useful information for research. Every record helps scientists understand where birds go and why. For example, Speirs learned that a bird he saw in Hong Kong might fly to Beijing in a few days and even reach the Arctic Circle in a few weeks. This fact makes him realize that if one place is polluted, it will hurt the birds and the environment far away.
Speirs believes that protecting birds means protecting ourselves. “We share the same Earth,” he said. “And what happens in one place can influence places far away. It is our responsibility to protect the environment.”
In China, the number of bird-watchers is growing fast. This is closely related to the country’s efforts to protect nature. In recent years, China has worked hard to build more parks and protect forests and wetlands. These actions have made the environment better. Many birds that almost disappeared are now coming back. When people go out to watch birds, they start to care more about the environment.
61. (原创)What can we learn from Paragraph 1?
A. Bird-watching started in South Africa in 2022.

C. James Speirs moved to Hong Kong to watch birds.

62. (原创)Why was Speirs surprised when he heard the call of the hoopoe in Beijing?
A. Because he thought the bird was common in China.
B. Because the bird flew to him from the Arctic Circle.
C. Because he used to think this bird only lived in Africa.
D. Because he had never seen a hoopoe in his life before.
63. (原创)According to Paragraph 3, if a bird fly from Hongkong on June 5th, when might it reach the Arctic Circle?
A. On June 8th. B. On June 10th. C. On June 15th. D. On June 27th.
64. (原创)What is the author’s attitude towards bird-watching?
A. Negative. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Uncertain.
65. (原创)How is the passage organized? (①=Paragraph 1, ②=Paragraph 2, ... )
