Why do more and more older adults go back to school? A. They aren’t satisfied with present jobs. B. They want to know more new friends. C. They aren’t willing to waste their life. 19. What difficulty will older students meet? A. Having to quit their current careers. B. Spending a lot of money and energy. C. Studying together with teenagers. 20. What is the speaker’s attitude to the older adults going back to school? A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Indifferent. A 19. B 20. More and more people today are going back to school as older adults. Why are more and more people doing this? The main reason is that they aren’t satisfied with their present careers. Maybe they are tired of their busy, stressful life in business. Maybe they want to make more money. Or maybe they want to try something new, so they want to return to school to study a different major or get more education in the field they’re already in. But what are the challenges of this decision? Well, firstly, it costs a lot of money to pay for school per year. Most people have to pay for everyday costs of housing, food, clothing and entertainments, causing them financial problems. Besides, many people don’t have enough time. They cannot quit their jobs and give school their full attention, so they must take classes at night. And find time to study when they can. Finally, going back to school after not being a student for so long might be more challenging than most people think. But to most of these students, it’s all worth it. And their efforts will pay off one day. 再根据 Regular Holidays 部分“The manager’s office closes on Sundays and national holidays.(经理办公室周日和国定假日关闭)”可知,每周营业6天。 根据 Visitors 部分“Only the same gender can stay in your dorm for a maximum of three days and two nights.(只允许同性在你的宿舍住最多三天两晚)”可知,允许同性朋友留宿。 B A year ago, my wife and I sold one of our cars and replaced it with an e-bike. I knew that I was doing something good for the planet. But I still viewed giving up my car as something reserved for the deeply committed and adventurous, something that Greenpeace volunteers did to make the world better. I live in Colorado; e-biking would mean freezing in the winter and sweating in the summer. It was the right thing to do, I thought, but it was not going to be fun. I was very wrong. Before selling our car, I worried most about riding in the cold winter months. But I quickly learned that, as the saying goes, there is no bad weather, only bad clothes. I wear gloves, warm socks, and a ski jacket when I ride, and am almost never too cold. And though I, like many would-be cyclists, was worried about arriving at the office sweaty in hotter months, the e-bike solved my problem. Even when it was 30°C outside, I didn’t break a sweat, thanks to my bike’s pedal-assist mode If I’m honest, sometimes I didn’t even pedal; I just switched to pedal-assist mode, sat back, and enjoyed my ride. But biking to work wasn’t just not unpleasant — it was absolutely enjoyable. One day, shortly after selling our car, I hopped on (跳上) my bike after a stressful day at work and rode home down a street edged with changing fall leaves. I felt more connected to the physical environment around me than I had when I’d traveled the same route surrounded by metal and glass. I have to say, this sensation made me happier and healthier. Of course, e-bikes aren’t going to replace every car on every trip. In a country where uncontrolled stretching of suburbs and malls and unprotected bike paths are the norm (常态), it’s unrealistic to expect e-bikes to replace cars in the way that cars replaced horses in the past. But as an individual, making short trips on an e-bike would likely save money, cut carbon footprints, and improve health and happiness. 24. What did the author initially think of letting go of his car? A. A crowd-driven decision. B. A wrong move. C. A responsibility by law D. A difficult choice. 25. How did the author feel about the actual experience of riding to work? A. Panicked. B. Amazed. C. Embarrassed. D. Confused. 26. What does the underlined part “this sensation” in paragraph 4 refer to? A. Desire to head home faster. B. Interest in exploring new routes. C. Love for exposure to nature. D. Relief from work stress. 27. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Horses will be back quickly. B. E-bikes will replace cars very soon. C. Cyclists should do more to protect themselves. D. Cities need a more inclusive transport network. D 25. B 26. C 27. 根据第一段“But I still viewed giving up my car as something reserved for the deeply committed and adventurous, something that Greenpeace volunteers did to make the world better. I live in Colorado; e-biking would mean freezing in the winter and sweating in the summer. It was the right thing to do, I thought, but it was not going to be fun. (但我仍然认为,放弃自己的汽车是专为那些深怀热忱、勇于冒险的人准备的,这是绿色和平志愿者们为了改善世界而做出的选择。我住在科罗拉多州;骑电动自行车意味着冬天会冻僵,夏天则会大汗淋漓。我觉得这做的是对的,但肯定不会很有趣。)”可知,作者最初认为弃用汽车是件难事。 【25题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“I was very wrong. (我错了。)”以及第四段“But biking to work wasn’t just not unpleasant — it was absolutely enjoyable. (但骑自行车上班不仅不令人不适,反而非常愉快。)”可知,实际骑行体验远超预期,作者感到惊喜。 【26题详解】 词句猜测题。根据划线词上文“I felt more connected to the physical environment around me than I had when I’d traveled the same route surrounded by metal and glass. (我感觉自己与周围的物理环境更加贴近,而不是在金属和玻璃环绕的环境中走过同样的路线时那种感觉。)”可知,作者骑自行车上班后感觉自己与周围的自然环境更加贴近了。故划线词意思是“对接触自然的热爱”。 【27题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Of course, e-bikes aren’t going to replace every car on every trip. (当然,电动自行车不会在每次出行中取代所有汽车。在一个郊区和购物中心无序扩张、自行车道缺乏保护已成为常态的国家,指望电动自行车像过去汽车取代马匹那样彻底替代汽车,是不切实际的。但对个人而言,骑电动自行车短途出行可能节省开支、减少碳足迹,并改善健康与幸福感。)”可知,城市需要更包容的交通网络。 C These days, when most of us think of a “book,” we have in mind something around nine inches by six inches. But digital reading has redefined presuppositions (预想) about size and about what format is best for what is being read: text messages, news articles, textbooks or fiction. Conventional wisdom typically suggests that serious digital reading calls for big size (at least a tablet or e-reader), while one-off encounters with sports updates or tweets are fine on mobile phones. But these rules are broken as users increasingly abandon larger mobile devices like Kindles and Nooks in favor of an all-purpose phone. With many newer generations of smart phones offering bigger screens — along with continued advancements in screen resolution (分辨率) — readers are turning to their mobiles for more and more of their onscreen reading. Does size matter? For most of us, yes. When the reading platform size decreases, it’s harder to focus on complex arguments or story lines. “No one would read War and Peace on a mobile phone,” you might say — but that’s exactly what journalist Clive Thompson did successfully earlier this year. Convenience was his basic motivation — he was unlikely to bring the print version around with him. But when my university students try the same action, they often admit the results are more questionable. To be fair, the main challenge of reading on mobile phones or smart phones isn’t size. Rather, for the majority of readers, the issue is mindset For those lacking self-discipline, there is Freedom software, which blocks internet access on digital devices if you’re trying to get some work done. Once upon a time, reading was literally a big deal. Children actually learned to read books that are physically outsized with words in large type. For me and others of my generation, those huge books were a sign of the importance of reading. With today’s small-screen digital devices, can reading still be a big deal? For most of us who struggle with distraction (分散注意力的事) and assume size matters, the answer will often be “no.” 28. What is the primary focus regarding digital reading in paragraph 2? A. The diverse e-book formats. B. The most popular e-readers. C. The move toward smaller screens. D. The competition with physical reading. 29. What can be inferred about Thompson’s War and Peace reading experience? A. It took great concentration. B. He preferred the print version. C. He used the Freedom software. D. It inspired a craze for the book. 30. What does the author mean by saying “the students try the same action” in paragraph 4? A. Students turning to physical books. B. Students reading anywhere anytime. C. Students disconnecting from the internet. D. Students reading serious works on phones. 31. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph? A. Offer a solution. B. Express a regret. C. Give a suggestion. D. Recall a past history. C 29. A 30. D 31. 根据第二段“But these rules are broken as users increasingly abandon larger mobile devices like Kindles and Nooks in favor of an all-purpose phone. With many newer generations of smart phones offering bigger screens — along with continued advancements in screen resolution (分辨率) — readers are turning to their mobiles for more and more of their onscreen reading. (但这些规则正在被打破,因为用户越来越多地放弃Kindle和Nook这样的大型移动设备,转而选择多功能手机。随着新一代智能手机屏幕尺寸更大、分辨率持续提升,读者们正越来越依赖手机进行阅读。)”可知,第二段关于数字阅读的主要关注点是向更小屏幕的转变。 【29题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“Does size matter? For most of us, yes. When the reading platform size decreases, it’s harder to focus on complex arguments or story lines. “No one would read War and Peace on a mobile phone,” you might say — but that’s exactly what journalist Clive Thompson did successfully earlier this year. Convenience was his basic motivation — he was unlikely to bring the print version around with him. (尺寸真的重要吗?对大多数人来说,答案是肯定的。当阅读平台变小,人们就更难专注于复杂的论点或情节发展。“没人会用手机读《战争与和平》”你可能会说——但今年早些时候,记者克莱夫·汤普森正是成功做到了这一点。便利性是他基本的动机——他不太可能随身携带纸质版。)”可知,阅读汤普森的《战争与和平》需要极大的专注力。 【30题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“Does size matter? For most of us, yes. When the reading platform size decreases, it’s harder to focus on complex arguments or story lines. “No one would read War and Peace on a mobile phone,” you might say — but that’s exactly what journalist Clive Thompson did successfully earlier this year. Convenience was his basic motivation — he was unlikely to bring the print version around with him. (尺寸真的重要吗?对大多数人来说,答案是肯定的。当阅读平台变小,人们就更难专注于复杂的论点或情节发展。“没人会用手机读《战争与和平》”你可能会说——但今年早些时候,记者克莱夫·汤普森正是成功做到了这一点。便利性是他基本的动机——他不太可能随身携带纸质版。)”以及第四段“But when my university students try the same action, they often admit the results are more questionable. (但当我的大学生尝试同样的行为时,他们常常承认结果更值得怀疑。)”可知,作者在第4段中说“学生们尝试同样的行为”意思是学生们用手机阅读严肃的作品。 【31题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Once upon a time, reading was literally a big deal. Children actually learned to read books that are physically outsized with words in large type. For me and others of my generation, those huge books were a sign of the importance of reading. With today’s small-screen digital devices, can reading still be a big deal? For most of us who struggle with distraction (分散注意力的事) and assume size matters, the answer will often be “no.” (从前,阅读确实是一件大事。孩子们实际上会学习读那些文字用大字体、体积巨大的书本。对我和同龄人来说,那些厚重的书正是阅读重要性的象征。如今,随着小屏幕数字设备的普及,阅读还能算得上一件大事吗?对于大多数容易分心、并认为尺寸很重要的人来说,答案往往是否定的。)”可知,作者感慨如今小屏设备容易让人分心,阅读不再被重视,流露惋惜之情。 D As trees turn gold and red in autumn, scientists are debating exactly what those colors are for. For decades, textbooks claimed that autumn colors were just a byproduct of dying leaves. “I had always believed that autumn leaves were waste baskets,” said ecologist Dr. David Wilkinson. “That’s what I was told as a student.” But in recent years, scientists have recognized that autumn colors probably play an important role in the life of many trees. Dr. William Hamilton, from Oxford University, proposed that bright autumn leaves contain a message: they warn insects to leave them alone. In the fall, insects choose trees where they will lay their eggs. Then the next spring, the baby insects feed on the tree, often with damaging results. A tree can discourage these insects with poisons. Dr. Hamilton assumed that trees with strong defenses might be able to protect themselves even further by letting egg-laying insects know what was in store for their eggs. By producing brilliant autumn colors, the trees advertised their deadliness. As insects evolved (进化) to avoid the brightest leaves, natural selection favored trees that could become even brighter. The leaf-signal theory has drawn criticism, most recently from Dr. William Hoch at the University of Wisconsin, who argues that bright leaves appear on trees that have no insects to warn off. His recent work suggests that fall colors serve mainly as a sunscreen. Autumn leaves cannot capture (吸收) all the sunlight striking them, and the leftover energy can build up in the leaf and cause damage to its tissue. Anthocyanins (花青素) that produce red and orange colors appear to protect autumn leaves by blocking some of the sunlight. “You may have a few instances where insects have some sort of relationship to color changes,” Dr. Hoch said, “but it’s almost certainly not a broad-based explanation. It doesn’t hold any water.” These arguments have not swayed (使改变看法) Dr. Hamilton’s supporters, who argue that the leaf-signal theory is still worth investigating. But both sides agree that the debate has been useful, because it has given them deeper admiration for this time of year. 32. What did Wilkinson present about autumn leaves? A. A new discovery. B. A wide-ranging debate. C. A commonly-held view. D. A theoretical assumption. 33. What did Hamilton suggest about the function of bright autumn leaves? A. To attract certain insects. B. To prevent trees from harm. C. To store nutrients for the future. D. To maintain ecological balance. 34. What did Dr. William Hoch think of the leaf-signal theory? A. It makes no sense. B. It gives a convincing explanation. C. It intends to draw public attention. D. It provides new insights. 35. What is the best title for the text? A. The sun’s hot touch can burn tree leaves B. Scientists only favor the most colorful leaves C. Autumn leaves are just nature’s waste baskets D. Those brilliant autumn leaves may be saving trees 【答案】32. C 33. B 34. A 35. 根据第一段的句子“For decades, textbooks claimed that autumn colors were just a byproduct of dying leaves. ‘I had always believed that autumn leaves were waste baskets,’ said ecologist Dr. David Wilkinson. ‘That’s what I was told as a student.’ (几十年来,教科书声称秋天的颜色只是枯萎的叶子的副产品。‘我一直认为秋叶是垃圾桶,’生态学家David Wilkinson博士说。‘这是我学生时代被告知的。’)”可知,Wilkinson提出的是关于秋叶的一种普遍持有的观点。 【33题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段的句子“Dr. William Hamilton, from Oxford University, proposed that bright autumn leaves contain a message: they warn insects to leave them alone. (来自牛津大学的William Hamilton博士提出,鲜艳的秋叶包含着一种信息:它们警告昆虫不要打扰它们。)”和“A tree can discourage these insects with poisons. (一棵树可以用有毒物质阻止这些昆虫)”以及地三段的句子“By producing brilliant autumn colors, the trees advertised their deadliness. (通过产生鲜艳的秋色,树木宣传了它们的致命性。)”可知,Hamilton认为明亮的秋叶是为了防止树木受到伤害。 【34题详解】 推理判断题。根据第五段的句子““You may have a few instances where insects have some sort of relationship to color changes,” Dr. Hoch said, “but it’s almost certainly not a broad-based explanation. It doesn’t hold any water.” D项“Those brilliant autumn leaves may be saving trees (那些明亮的秋叶可能在拯救树木)”最能概括文章主旨。 Should We Be Concerned About AI? Recently, the European Union has passed a draft of the first major law to govern artificial intelligence (AI). Policymakers in China and the United States are working on similar guidelines. ____36____ There are crucial issues to consider that lead to the supervision. AI-generated content may spread misinformation. AI systems such as chatbots can create polished articles that look like something a person wrote. However, chatbots get their information from the Internet, and they cannot distinguish between reliable facts and false reports. As a result, a chatbot’s articles may include inaccurate information. ____37____ AI risks copyright issues. During training, AI systems often add copyrighted works to their databases. Later, when an AI system creates new content such as a drawing, the picture may have the nose of a copyrighted image. ____38____ Jonathan Taplin, film producer and author, is against such use of AI. He feels licenses are needed to protect artists when AI uses their copyrighted material in its training. ____39____ Professor Debby Cotton at Plymouth Marjon University placed her name on an article written by a chatbot. In groups, we were to create a poster around what we were studying. On a piece of paper, we wrote the names of three friends we wanted in our group. After collecting all the requests, Mrs. Bartlett informed us that she would take into consideration the names we chose and would let us know the results the next day. I was a well-rounded top student in the class, so I had no doubt I would get the group of my choice. There were only a handful of sociably decent people in the class, and Missy was one of them. I knew we had chosen each other. The next day, I anxiously awaited the class. After the bell rang, Missy and I stopped talking as Mrs. Bartlett called for our attention. She started to call out names. When she reached group three, Missy’s name was called. So I’m in group three, I thought. The second, third and fourth members of the group were called. My name was not included. There had to be some mistake! Then I heard it. The last group: “ Mauro, Juliette, Rachel, Karina. ” I could feel the tears well in my eyes. How could I face being in that group — the boy who barely spoke English, the one girl who was always covered by skirts that went down to her ankles, and the other girl who was often wearing very strange and unusual clothes with fancy items. They certainly fell into the category of the least popular in our class. They were considered misfits There must be something wrong! Mrs. Bartlett was such a person of insight, vision and thoughtfulness that she never forgot to bring out the potential of all her students. Oh, how badly I wanted to be with my friends. Finally I was determined to convince her I should be in the “ good ” group. Paragraph 1: I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. Bartlett. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Halfway through the week, I felt myself enjoying the company of these three misfits. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph l: I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. Bartlett. Before I opened my mouth she gently placed a hand on my shoulder, saying with a knowing smile, “ I know what you want, but your group needs you. ” So stunned was I that I couldn’t utter a single word for a moment. She had seen something in me that I hadn’t seen. Suddenly, a mixture of guilt as well as pride seized me. The power of being trusted made me stand straighter. “ I’ll help them. ” I replied in a firm voice. I couldn’t believe it came out of my mouth, but it did. Paragraph 2: Halfway through the week, I felt myself enjoying the company of these three misfits. The project was going smoothly with our joint efforts. Besides, I found out Mauro was struggling with English, Juliette wore long skirts because of her religion and Rachel dreamed to be a fashion designer. They weren’t misfits, just people that no one cared enough about to try to understand — except Mrs. Bartlett. I was lucky to be given a chance to see other people in a new light. Mrs. Bartlett gave us an A on that assignment, which should be handed back, for she was the one who truly deserved it. 词汇激活 行为类 ①一言不发:not utter a single word/say nothing ②帮助:help/aid/assist ③回答:reply/respond/answer ④得到机会:be given a chance/be offered an opportunity 情绪类 ①感到惊讶的:stunned/astonished/amazed ②内疚:guilt/compunction/self-reproach 【点睛】[高分句型1]So stunned was I that I couldn’t utter a single word for a moment.(“so+adj.”位于句首时的倒装句及that引导结果状语从句) [高分句型2]She had seen something in me that I hadn’t seen.(由关系代词that引导限制性定语从句) [高分句型3]Mrs. Bartlett gave us an A on that assignment, which should be handed back, for she was the one who truly deserved it.(由关系代词which引导非限制性定语从句以及由关系代词who引导限制性定语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $西工大附中高考适应性训练听力部分。 Hello, international friends club. can I help you? C These days, when most of us think of a “book,” we have in mind something around nine inches by six inches. D As trees turn gold and red in autumn, scientists are debating exactly what those colors are for. Those brilliant autumn leaves may be saving trees Should We Be Concerned About AI? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
