Now, a new report in Emotion gives facts to back up what these people said. According to the report, young people’s life enjoyment and happiness have been down since 2012, the year the number of teens having smartphones started improving very fast. The report also finds that teens’ psychological (心理的) health gets worse the more hours a week they spend on screens. Jean Twenge is the lead writer of the report. She mentioned the connection between happiness and screen activities, such as social media, texting, gaming, and video chats. She also mentioned the connection between happiness and non-screen activities, including sports, reading, and face-to-face communications. She called the relationship between screen and non-screen activities “zero sum”—if you are doing one, it takes time away from the others. Diane Tanman believes that her sons are like that. They are 11 and 15. They used to play games in fields, and it made them happier. These days, her sons get lost in online games. Many of the games have rewards (奖励) to keep players coming back. “It’s just junk food for the brain,” Tanman said. Ed Lazzara says his 12-year-old son Leo is a fan of video games. After playing a lot, Leo gets more upset and uncomfortable. He wants his son to play fewer video games. However, completely staying away from electronic devices (设备) doesn’t lead to happiness, either. Twenge and her co-writers found that the happiest teens used electronic devices a little less than an hour daily. After a daily hour of screen time, unhappiness rises because of the improving screen time. Spending time in front of a screen is a common part of being a teenager. Many schools ask students to be online and to use iPads or other devices to do their work. But teachers and parents have also complained that technology (科技) can get in the way of learning when teens use their devices for fun things instead of their studies. If we discover how screen time affects young minds, we can help teens use technology better and protect their psychological health. Screen time is like ice cream. Sure, we can have some once in a while, but it shouldn’t be part of our everyday lives. 39. What can we learn from the passage? A. Screen time at home is not as good as screen time at school. B. Nearly an hour of screen time every day makes teens happiest. C. Technology should be encouraged in classroom learning. D. What teens do on the screen affects their happiness. 40. Why does the passage mention the examples of families with teens? A. To prove the bad effect of the addictive designs of electronic devices. B. To show parents have little control over their teens’ screen time. C. To compare different-aged teens’ feelings about screen use. D. To explain why electronic devices make teens feel happy. 41. What does the phrase “get in the way” probably mean in the passage? A. Worrying about something B. Stopping something from happening C. Discovering something new D. Encouraging something better 42. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. Use of Electronic Devices: Should We Consider Teens’ Needs? B. Teens’ Psychological Health: Why Is It Important? C. Screen Time and Teens’ Study Performance D. Screen Time and Teens’ Life Happiness 【答案】39. B 40. A 41. B 42. Want to try using it yourself? Let’s do a cool project-making a solar (太阳的) tower! You can try this project at home. You just need some tape (胶带), a pin (别针), paper, three cans and two big thick books. Now, we’re going to build the solar tower. First, make a pinwheel (纸风车) with a piece of paper. Second, cut off the tops and bottoms (底部) of the cans, place the cans on top of each other and tape them together. Next, use a pin to connect the pinwheel with the tower. Finally, put the can tower on top of the books, which are 5cm apart from each other. So there’s a gap (间隔) at the bottom, allowing the air to enter the tower. Now, put the whole thing near a window. When the sun shines on the tower, it gets hot and warms the air in it. The warmer air moves upward through the tower and makes the pinwheel turn around as it passes by. Then cooler air comes in through the gap from the bottom of the tower, gets warm, and rises, so the cycle goes on. This is how it works. How amazing! 43. How does the writer introduce the solar tower in Paragraph 1? A. By asking questions. B. By listing numbers. C. By showing pictures. D. By giving examples. 44. What is the correct order of steps to build the solar tower? A. Connect the pinwheel→ Tape the cans→ Place books→ Make the pinwheel B. Make the pinwheel →Tape the cans→ Connect the pinwheel →Place the books C. Cut the cans→ Place the books→ Make the pinwheel → Use tape D. Put books first → Make the pinwheel → Cut the cans→ Add tape 45. Why are the two books 5cm apart from each other? A. To hold up the cans for the tower. B. To make the air get into the tower. C. To get more sunlight for warm air. D. To make more space for cooler air. 46. How does the air travel through the tower? (⊕for warm air; for cold air. ) A. B. C. D. 【答案】43. A 44. B 45. B 46. D 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章讲述如何自制简易太阳能塔以及太阳能塔工作的原理。 【43题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第一段中“Do you know the sun’s warmth is a kind of useful energy? Want to try using it yourself?可知,作者通过两个问题引出后续的写作。故选A。 【44题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第二段中“First, make a pinwheel...5cm apart from each other. ”可知,正确的顺序为先制作纸风车,然后用胶带粘住罐子,使用大头针将纸风车与罐子连接,最后把罐子塔放置在相互间隔五厘米的书上。故选B。 【45题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第二段中“So there’s a gap at the bottom, allowing the air to enter the tower.”可知,是为了让空气进入塔中。故选B。 【46题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第三段中“The warmer air moves upward...so the cycle goes on.”可知,热空气通过塔身向上流动,经过风车时带动风车转动。接着,较冷的空气从塔底部的缝隙进入,受热后上升。故选D。 Do you know that gardening is good for you? Planting seeds and caring for them can give you fresh vegetables and flowers. It can also help with your mental (精神) health. About 30% families have their own little gardens. And guess what? More teenagers get their hands dirty in the garden. Gardening is a fantastic habit, just like exercising daily or taking a dog for a walk. When we make time for healthy activities every day, we get to enjoy some really nice feelings, such as being relaxed and joyful. It’s like we do something great. A study shows that spending a few hours in the garden can cheer you up. After a busy day at school, you’ll feel much better digging in the soil or watering your plants. Building a new healthy habit can be difficult, but gardening can make it happen by daily care. Every day, we step outside, take care of our gardens and watch closely for any small changes in nature. When we see our plants growing taller or fresh vegetables coming out, we feel happy. This feeling makes us keep going. And with each day we spend in the garden, a new habit slowly builds. Gardening isn't just about getting your hands dirty. It’s also a good habit to stay healthy. Working in the garden gives us fresh air and helps us stay active. It’s also a great way to relax and forget about our worries. By spending time taking care of the plants, we can also better our own mental health. So, why not give gardening a try? It will be your new healthy habit. 47. From the passage, we know _________. Chinese food was rich with tastes, from the spicy Sichuan pepper to the amazing balance of sweet and sour in Peking duck. As China’s connections for buying and selling became more widespread (广泛的), these foods started a big adventure to new places. One of the first dishes to travel was noodles. Yes, the same noodles that we have today. They were first introduced to Italian businessmen who came to China during the Silk Road trading period. The Italians loved it so much and took the recipe back home, where it turned into the pasta we enjoy today. Next on the journey was tea, which was carried by monks and traders to Japan and then to Europe. Chinese had been enjoying tea for centuries, and people in many other countries also liked it a lot. In England, it became a symbol of relaxation, and people often drank it with breakfast. Americans had it in the middle of the day to feel more awake. But the most interesting journey was that of soy sauce (酱油). At first, people used soybeans and wheat to make a sauce. They found out that the tasty part on top was great for cooking. This byproduct of making the sauce became known as soy sauce. As it traveled to Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries, it became an important part of their dishes. Cooks quickly discovered its magic—it could turn simple rice, vegetables and meat into delicious meals with its rich, savory taste. First mentioned in Chinese texts around the third century, soy sauce soon became as important as salt in kitchens across Asia. Today, you can find Chinese restaurants in almost every corner of the world, from the busy streets of New York to the quiet towns of Europe. Dumplings, or “jiaozi”, which were once a special treat for Chinese New Year, are now loved all around the world. They’ve become “ravioli” in Italy, “pelmet”. Russia, and people of all ages enjoy them. The history of Chinese food traveling to foreign lands shows that good food has a way of bringing people together. It’s a bridge between cultures, a shared language that speaks of joy, celebration, and the simple pleasure of a delicious meal. So, the next time when you enjoy a bowl of spaghetti or a cup of tea, remember the ancient Chinese kitchens where it all began, and the long, tasty journey that brought it to your table. 78. As she stood on the starting block, she felt a mix of excitement and nervousness. The crowd was cheering loudly, and she could hear her coach shouting, “Go, Emma, go!” With a deep breath, she dived into the water, her body slicing through it like a knife. By the end of the race, she was exhausted but satisfied, knowing that she had given it her best. The final event of the day was the relay race. Emma was part of the Greenfield team, and they were all excited to show what they could do. As the anchor leg, Emma knew she had to bring it home for her team. Screen Time and Teens’ Life Happiness Do you know the sun’s warmth is a kind of useful energy? (⊕for warm air; for cold air. ) A. B. C. D. Do you know that gardening is good for you? When you some back home on a hot summer night, you find that the lights are already on. The air condition has been working for thirty minutes to cool the room and the rice you prepared this morning has been cooked right before you arrive home. This is what a smart home can bring you today. A smart home is a home where users can control (控制) household appliances like the TV, the fridge, the washing machine, the air conditioner and others from anywhere by using an Internet-connected (与网络相连的) mobile phone or networked devices (设备). Devices in a smart home are connected with each other through the Internet so that the user can control household appliances from far away. Many users find their life more convenient (便利的) in a smart home. Mr Zhu, a smart home user from Suzhou, shared his experiences (体验) on his blog. He said that he usually gets off work late, so cooking used to be a big problem. But now cooked rice waits for him at home because he can turn on the rice cooker with his phone before he gets home. In summer, he usually, turns on the air conditioner thirty minutes ahead of time. He can also check the camera and do or any time to see whether he has locked the door or not. When his child was alone at home during the holidays, he used to worry about her safety. Now he can check if she is OK at home any time on the phone. His home also has a kitchen safety net, including smoke sensors, gas sensors and water sensors. And these devices are really smart. They come with self-learning skulls. If there’s any danger in the home when he is away, they can send a warning (警报) to his phone to remind (提醒) him to call the police or the firemen. However, there’re still some problems with a smart home. First; though the advertisements (广告) of smart home devices usually say they are easy enough to install (安装), this doesn’t seem to be always true.. . ISO, some Apps connected with the smart home devices are so badly designed that users don’t know how to use them. Smart home, a sweet home Long ago, in the busy kitchens of ancient China, a big change in the way people cooked was taking place. 78.
