A
“Love You, Old Self”—this simple sentence has become a warm thing and a popular phrase among young people in China. When they post photos of home-cooked food or morning coffee with these words, they turn small daily things into a shared way of being kind to themselves. People say it is one of the kindest trends, and it touches many people deeply.
It is more than just a saying. It makes the unclear idea of taking care of oneself become real. It gives comfort when people feel stressed and celebrates small happy moments. The key is to call oneself “Old Self”—a friendly name that lets people step back and talk to themselves kindly, just as they would to a close friend.
This trend is popular for a reason. Today’s young people face a lot of pressure, such as non-stop exams and strong competition for university places and jobs. For example, a high school student in Beijing writes “Love You, Old Self” in her notebook to calm down after a hard exam. In such situations, being gently kind to oneself has become an important way to deal with pressure.
Importantly, this is not an excuse to avoid difficulties. Instead, it helps people build more courage to get through hard times. To say “Love You, Old Self” means to recognize one’s own efforts, to allow oneself to rest when needed, and thus find a healthy balance. It is a cheap but useful way to keep emotions stable. It also changes where strength comes from—from others’ praise to believing in oneself.
In the end, by being kind to themselves, young people are better able to deal with outside pressure. This gentle and steady power helps them find inner peace and shows a true fact: to really care for others, you must first be kind to yourself.

Forget McDonald’s. This Chinese Fast-Food Chain is now the world’s biggest. It sells ice cream and sugary drinks for under one dollar. Its mascot looks like a combination of Frosty the Snowman and the Michelin Man. And its stores loudly and continuously play a jingle (音乐片段) set to the tune of “Oh! Susanna” These special qualities helped Mixue Ice Cream and Tea become the world’s biggest fast-food chain by the number of its shops, topping McDonald’s and Starbucks. The company raised more than four hundred million dollars in an initial public offering (IPO 首次公开募股) of its shares (股份) in Hong Kong on Monday. The shares rose nearly thirty percent in early trading, giving Mixue a valuation of more than ten billion dollars.
“People are chasing (追求) more cost-efficient products,” said Ernan Cui, a Beijing-based analyst for research firm Gavekal Dragonomics. She said Mixue is popular in smaller cities, where the company has focused its expansion. Low prices alone cannot explain why Mixue has become part of Chinese pop culture. Thanks to its mascot and the jingle, it has won great popularity throughout the country. Its chubby (圆胖的) mascot, the Snow King, has become a national icon (形象) just like Ronald McDonald and Colonel Sanders.
Just as popular is Mixue’s theme song, which plays in stores. The lyrics (歌词) to the English version: “I love you. You love me. Mixue Ice Cream and Tea.”
Mixue said in its IPO report that it aimed to become more global, but didn’t mention plans to enter the U. S. Almost ninety percent of its stores are in China, with the rest in ten other Asian countries and Australia.

In a new move that has drawn worldwide attention, Australia has made a rule to stop children under 16 from using social media accounts. This policy, which has recently come into force, is meant to lower the growing risks young Internet users face, including too much screen time, online bullying, and harmful information on the Internet.
Popular social media apps such as Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Snapchat must now use clear age-checking steps to find and close accounts owned by young users. Companies that refuse to follow the rule will face serious money penalties (罚款) as high as 49.5 million Australian dollars. Although most platforms have agreed to obey the rule, a few have expressed different ideas, saying it may influence personal expression online.
To make the rule work as planned, platforms will check users’ ages by video or official documents. Accounts that are closed can be reopened when the user turns 16. It is important to know that the rule does not cover every app: services including WhatsApp, YouTube Kids and Roblox can still be used by teenagers. Officials say the list may be changed later as new apps become popular among young people.
People’s ideas about the rule are mixed. Many parents support it, as they believe it can protect children from bad online influence and encourage them to join in more healthy offline activities. However, some experts and youth workers worry that some teenagers may turn to less strictly controlled apps or find ways to go around the rule, which may bring them greater danger. Some even compare it to a game of “whack-a-mole,” where stopping one app only leads users to another.
Countries around the world are closely watching Australia’s try. Researchers from Stanford University will carry out a long-term study to see its influences, such as whether teenagers sleep better, exercise more, or meet new Internet problems. The key question remains: Can this rule really make the Internet a safer space for young people?
21. What is the main purpose of Australia’s new rule on social media for under-16s?
A. To control the development of social media companies.
B. To protect young people from different online risks.
C. To advise teenagers to give up online activities completely.
D. To lower the growing number of young social media users in the country.
22. Which of the following apps are teenagers under 16 still allowed to use according to the passage?
A. Instagram. B. TikTok. C. YouTube. D. Roblox.
23. What can we infer from the “whack-a-mole” game comparison in Paragraph 4?
A. The rule will completely solve all online risks for teenagers.
B. Teenagers may choose other less-managed platforms to avoid the rule.
C. It is easy for platforms to carry out the age-checking work.
D. Most teenagers will give up using social media at once.
24. What is the correct order of the events according to the passage?
①Companies face high penalties if breaking the rule.
②Platforms use age-checking to confirm users’ ages.
③The new rule came into force.
④Researchers will study the influences of the rule.
A. ③→②→①→④ B. ②→①→③→④ C. ①→③→②→④ D. ④→③→①→②
25. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Ways to keep teenagers away from online bullying.
B. Different opinions on social media platforms.
C. Australia’s new rule on teenagers’ social media use.
D. The bad influences of social media on teenagers.
