There are decisions we take on instinct, without even realising we are taking them.
Two years ago, I left Germany to do volunteering work. I had a couple of disappointing experiences and a boring job in front of me. It was time to go. I found an interesting contact in a small village in Portugal. In exchange for room and board, I would be working with animals in a residence that hosted families with disabled people. And there I went, with just a backpack I was ready to jump into a new adventure.
There, I cared for the pets living next to the residents, cleaning their yard, preparing food and caring for them. Within a month I was in charge of all the other volunteers and the organization of the daily work. After 5 months, I left again and moved to Catalonia, in Spain, to live with an Irish family. They offered a roof and food on the passage of their house for abandoned animals I helped care for.
During both experiences, I had the chance to discover beautiful little towns and lovely villages. In Portugal, I walked on the coastline and explored those little towns on the top of the dry hills. In Spain I visited Barcelona multiple times, discovering little by little all its corners. Sometimes, my volunteering experience was complicated. I didn’t speak any Portuguese and only a bit of Spanish. But life out there was simple. It was so different from what I used to call “home” before! Going back to previous habits took me time.
If you’re wondering if an international volunteering year gap is worth it, despite the uncertain future and the social pressure, I say: go for it. Believe me, in various ways, you will be sure to return transformed, perhaps even improved to a superior version of your former self. With a bit of luck, you may also discover a new career path.
24. Why did the author choose to leave Germany to do volunteering work?
A. To make a change. B. To gain living skills.
C. To broaden his horizon. D. To add working experience.
25. What did the author mainly do during his trip?
A. Running an organization. B. Attending to animals.
C. Taking care of the disabled. D. Preparing food for volunteers.
26. Which of the following can best describe the author’s trip?
A. Simple. B. Romantic. C. Adventurous. D. Rewarding.
27. Which of the following can be the best title?
A. Instinct, a key step for new career B. Backpacking, a jump to a new adventure
C. Gap year, an escape from the reality D. Volunteering, a journey of self-discovery
A 25. B 26. D 27. D

Imagine you’re purchasing a lottery ticket, and your heart races as you check the numbers. To your amazement, you’ve matched five out of six! What will you do next? Will you buy another ticket? For most people, the answer is a big “Yes”.
When we come close to achieving a goal, we often gain a powerful energy that can drive us toward future success. Monica Wadhwa, a marketing professor at Temple University, suggests that not winning can actually motivate us more than winning itself.
In her studies, Wadhwa conducted various experiments to test this concept. In one experiment, participants played a cellphone game with the task of revealing eight diamonds. After the game, those who nearly won — by getting seven diamonds — walked faster to claim their reward than both winners and losers. “Their motivation is getting intensified (加强), but then they miss it ... So what happens to this motivation? It hooks on, giving you the energy for the next goal that you have.” Wadhwa explains, “As for the winners, they inch toward their goal, they achieve it, and their motivation is satisfied, which leaves them with no need to fight for anything else.”
However, this fire in your belly should be used wisely. Such motivation can push you toward significant goals, or be wasted on distractions. In another experiment at a fashion-accessory store where shoppers were given scratch-off lottery tickets, the near-winners shopped more and spent more than both winners and losers.
To harness (利用) this energy, Wadhwa advises setting goals that are slightly beyond our reach. She encourages managers to establish challenging yet achievable targets for their teams. Additionally, she recommends that parents highlight how close their children came to winning when they experience losses, fostering resilience and motivation. By understanding the unique power of nearly winning, we can turn setbacks into stepping stones for future success. As Wadhwa puts it. “Winners really do not take it all.”
28. What’s the purpose of paragraph 1?
A. To stress the importance of winning. B. To display harmful effects of the lottery.
C. To explain the rules of playing the lottery. D. To illustrate the excitement of nearly winning.
29. According to Wadhwa, what motivated the near-winners to act faster?
A. The eagerness to win another game. B. The unmet ambitions for winning games.
C. The dissatisfaction of not achieving goals. D. The need for immediate recognition or rewards.
30. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Feeling energized does not always ensure success.
B. You should not let your emotions guide your actions.
C. Motivation can lead to unwise choices if not controlled.
D. Having strong ambitions always leads to acting carelessly.
31. Which statement might Wadhwa agree most?
A. Parents should take their children’s losses seriously.
B. Managers should assign more tasks to star performers.
C. Encouraging children to fight for perfection is essential.
D. Setting slightly challenging goals can enhance motivation.
D 29. B 30. C 31. D

根据第一段“Imagine you’re purchasing a lottery ticket, and your heart races as you check the numbers. To your amazement, you’ve matched five out of six! What will you do next? will you buy another ticket? For most people, the answer is a big “Yes”.(想象一下,你正在买一张彩票,当你检查号码时,你的心跳加速。令你惊讶的是,你已经匹配了六个中的五个!接下来你要做什么?你要买另一张票吗?对大多数人来说,答案是肯定的)”可知,第一段描述买彩票差点中奖的情景,是来说明差一点获胜时的兴奋。故选D。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Their motivation is getting intensified (加强), but then they miss it ... So what happens to this motivation? It hooks on, giving you the energy for the next goal that you have.(他们的动力越来越强,但是他们错过了……
根据最后一段“To harness (利用) this energy, Wadhwa advises setting goals that are slightly beyond our reach. She encourages managers to establish challenging yet achievable targets for their teams.(为了利用这种能量,瓦德瓦建议设定一些稍微超出我们能力范围的目标。她鼓励管理者为团队制定具有挑战性但可以实现的目标)”可知,设定具有挑战性但可实现的目标能激发动力。故选D。

Mindfulness is such a hot word. We all want it. But while mindfulness may be credited as a key to happiness, mind-wandering is the key to our survival as a species.
According to Michael Graziano, a professor of psychology and neuroscience, humans evolved to prioritize immediate threats. “Having your attention focused on external events happening in the moment is of great importance during “fight-or-flight” moments,” says Graziano. But the other side of it is also important: when our mind wanders, that, too, is essential to our survival, says Graziano.
“It’s partly about remembering how to survive the saber tooth tiger (剑齿虎), but it might also be about social interactions. There are a lot of benefits to mind-wandering so long as you’re not doing it the moment a tiger is attacking you,” says Graziano. Often, when our minds wander, we’re thinking about past and future social interactions and how to conduct them. And this phenomenon isn’t by chance.
Emiliano Bruner, a paleoneurobiologist (古神经生物学家), explains that it originates from the brain’s parietal cortex (顶叶皮层). His 2022 study reveals that this region expanded significantly in modern humans, enabling outstanding capacities of visual imaging, along with imagination of past and future. “This is a wonderful superpower for evolution, promoting evolutionary fitness, but it’s also a drawback for individuals because it can cause overthinking, fears and anxiety,” says Bruner.
Today, this ability to survive is also the source of a lot of human sufferings. According to Bruner, in psychology, this is called “negativity prejudice” — or our natural instinct to think negatively about the future to remove any threats to our survival. “Evolution did its job, and happiness is not among its priorities,” says Bruner.
Bruner says that because mind wandering was important to our evolutionary survival, humans today need to control the damage it can do to our lives. Regular meditation, for example, is a tool that has been proven by research to increase time spent in the present moment and limit the overthinking that brings mental pains.
32. Why does the author mention “fight-or-flight” in paragraph 2?
A. To criticize its negative impact on modern mental health.
B. To argue that humans no longer rely on evolutionary instincts.
C. To compare different roles of mindfulness and mind-wandering.
D. To emphasize its role as the only survival strategy humans need.
33. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. The danger of mind-wandering during attacks.
B. The benefits of mindfulness in social interactions
C. The connection of social skills to human survival.
D. The evolutionary role of mind-wandering in safe periods.
34. Which of the following statements might Bruner agree with?
A. We developed “negativity prejudice” after we were born.
B. Mind-wandering is a drawback for individuals and should be avoided.
C. Evolutionary adaptations prioritize survival over mental well-being.
D. The expansion of the parietal cortex in humans enables us to better focus.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. Meditation Fixes Evolutionary Flaws
B. A Wandering Mind Is Part of Our Evolution
C. The Dangers of Overthinking in Modern Life
D. The History of Neuroscience and Human Evolution
C 33. D 34. C 35. B
根据第二段“According to Michael Graziano, a professor of psychology and neuroscience, humans evolved to prioritize immediate threats. “Having your attention focused on external events happening in the moment is of great importance during “fight-or-flight” moments,” says Graziano. But the other side of it is also important: when our mind wanders, that, too, is essential to our survival, says Graziano.(根据心理学和神经科学教授迈克尔·格拉齐亚诺的说法,人类进化过程中倾向于优先关注眼前的威胁。“在‘战斗或逃跑’的时刻,将注意力集中在当下发生的外部事件上至关重要,”格拉齐亚诺表示。但他也指出,另一面同样重要:当我们的思绪游离时,这对我们生存而言也是必不可少的)”可知,作者在第二段提到“战斗或逃跑”是为了比较正念与走神的不同作用。
【33题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段““It’s partly about remembering how to survive the saber tooth tiger (剑齿虎), but it might also be about social interactions. There are a lot of benefits to mind-wandering so long as you’re not doing it the moment a tiger is attacking you,” says Graziano. Often, when our minds wander, we’re thinking about past and future social interactions and how to conduct them. And this phenomenon isn’t by chance.(“这在一定程度上关乎如何记住如何躲避剑齿虎,但也可能与社会互动有关。
根据第一段“Mindfulness is such a hot word. We all want it. But while mindfulness may be credited as a key to happiness, mind-wandering is the key to our survival as a species.(正念如今是个热门词汇,人人都向往。

根据上文“Have you ever hoped silently that the person you’re calling won’t answer when you need to make a phone call?(当你需要打电话时,你是否曾默默希望对方不要接电话?)”以及下文“This anxiety is linked to fear whether it’s worrying about what to say or how your voice sounds.(这种焦虑与恐惧有关,无论是担心该说什么还是担心自己的声音听起来怎么样)”可知,此处应呼应上文的疑问,引出“电话焦虑”这一核心话题,C选项“If yes, you might be suffering from phone anxiety.(如果是这样,你可能正遭受电话焦虑的困扰)”既回答了上文的提问,又用phone anxiety衔接下文的This anxiety,符合语境。故选C项。
根据上文“Phone anxiety, also called telephonophobia, means avoiding phone conversations. It’s different from just disliking making or receiving calls.(电话焦虑,也称为电话恐惧症,指的是回避电话沟通。它不同于仅仅不喜欢打电话或接电话)”以及下文“That is because it feels more comfortable and lets them express themselves better. When texting or emailing, you don’t have face-to-face cues, but that actually makes things easier: you’re in control, can plan what to say, or delete a message before sending it.(这是因为这样会让人感觉更自在,也能让他们更好地表达自己。发短信或发邮件时,你没有面对面的提示,但这实际上会让事情变得更简单:你可以掌控局面,能够想好要说的话,或是在发送前删掉信息)”可知,此处应体现电话焦虑者对“发短信”的偏好,E选项“A study shows that people with phone anxiety prefer texting.(一项研究表明,有电话焦虑的人更喜欢发短信)”中的prefer texting衔接下文的texting or emailing, that is because也正是对该选项的原因解释,符合语境。故选E项。
【38题详解】
根据上文“If you want to overcome phone anxiety, the first step is to pick up the phone. It may sound obvious, but exposure is key.(如果你想克服电话焦虑,第一步就是拿起电话。这可能听起来很明显,但接触是关键。)”以及下文“If talking to strangers is too fearful for you, start with short, casual calls to friends or family you enjoy chatting with in person, which cuts down on unexpected conversational surprises and helps you get used to answering more often.(如果你害怕和陌生人交谈,可以先从给那些你喜欢当面聊天的朋友或家人打简短、随意的电话开始。这样能减少对话中的意外状况,帮你更频繁地适应接打电话)”可知,此处应强调“多打电话、多接电话”的重要性,G选项“The more you make or take calls, the more at ease you’ll feel.(你打电话、接电话越多,就会感到越自在。)”
根据下文“Smiling can calm you down and lift your mood; you can even use facial expressions and body language to pretend you’re talking in person. A quick power pose for a minute can also boost your confidence by lowering stress hormones. After getting through a call, reward yourself-take a nap, go for a walk, or watch your favorite show-to celebrate your progress.(微笑能让你平静下来、改善心情;你甚至可以借助面部表情和肢体语言,假装自己是在当面交谈。一分钟的快速力量姿势也能通过降低压力激素来增强你的信心。打完一通电话后,奖励一下自己 —— 小睡一会儿、散散步,或者看你最喜欢的节目 —— 以此庆祝自己的进步)”可知,此处应是一个过渡句,引出下文克服电话焦虑的其他小技巧,A选项“There are other simple tips too.(还有其他简单的技巧)”中的other simple tips恰好衔接下文的具体技巧,起到承上启下的作用,符合语境。故选A项。
根据上文“Finally, don’t overthink it: if a conversation takes an unexpected turn, don’t read too much into it, and don’t stress too much about preparing what to say.(最后,不要想太多:如果对话出现意想不到的转折,不要过度解读,也不要太紧张准备要说的话)”以及下文“After all, most people are focused on their own words rather than judging yours, so there’s little need to fear “messing up”.(毕竟,大多数人更关注自己说的话,而不是评判你说的话,所以没必要害怕“搞砸”)”可知,此处应体现“顺其自然”的沟通心态,B选项“Just stay open and go with the flow.(保持开放的心态,顺其自然就好)”既呼应了上文的don’t overthink it,又契合下文“不必害怕搞砸”的观点,符合语境。故选B项。

Recently, some students in our school have gained considerable online popularity by sharing their campus life on social media. Our class held a heated debate on this phenomenon.
Some students think it’s a great way to show the positive energy of our school and record meaningful youth moments. However, others worry that it may distract students from their studies and even lead to privacy risks.
In my opinion, we can share our life properly, but must keep a balance between the online world and real life. As students, we should value our studies more and not be addicted to Internet fame.

My daughter Katherine had always been the tech-lover in the family. So when she came home one afternoon, holding a small plastic device, I knew I was in for another one of her “modern miracles” speeches.
“Mom, this is Alexa,” she said, “a smart voice assistant. She can play music, read the news, set timers, control the lights — even call me if you need anything. Just say her name and ask!”
I forced a smile. At fifty-eight, I didn’t need a machine to talk to. I didn’t trust these so-called “smart” devices. I preferred knobs (球形把手), switches, and my own two hands. But not wanting to disappoint her, I nodded thanks and ignored the blinking device on the kitchen counter.
A week later, I stepped out of the cool house into the worst Texas heat I could remember. My new garden plants were fading fast. “Better make this fast,” I muttered, dragging the hose (软水管) the length of the yard, the sun beating down.
Katherine popped her head out of the back door. “Mom, be careful. I’m off to work.”
Finally, I watered the last plant. With a sigh of relief, I reached the back door, anticipating the rush of cool air. But relief turned to disbelief: the door was locked. Katherine had flipped the deadbolt out of habit.
My mind raced. Key to the door inside. Cell phone inside. The backyard was an oven, and I was the main course.
I paced, sweat soaking through my shirt. My three dogs danced around me, tails wagging, slipping in and out of the doggie door like it was nothing.
I stared at that tiny door. Could I fit? Not a chance. Could I reach the deadbolt through it? My arm was too short.
Suddenly, like a bolt from the hot blue sky, I had an idea: Alexa. Maybe she could save the day!

I struggled to work my head through the small opening, and shouted, “Alexa!” A blue light glowed from the counter. “Call Katherine!” I yelled, my voice filled with hope. The magical words “Calling Katherine” echoed through the house, and soon Katherine’s worried voice came. “Mom? What’s wrong?” I explained my situation at the top of my lungs. “I’m turning around right now,” she assured me. True to her word, within fifteen minutes Katherine’s car rushed into the driveway. When she unlocked the door, I fell into the cool hallway, embracing her with tears of relief streaming down my cheeks. My dogs circled us excitedly, wagging tails as if celebrating my rescue.
From that day on, my attitude totally changed. Alexa became my trusted companion, as I began asking her to play my favorite music while I cooked, set timers for my baking, and even remind me of medical appointments. Katherine noticed the transformation with delight, often finding me chatting with Alexa about recipes or news headlines. It dawned on me that Alexa’s help was more than a timely rescue — it opened my heart to my daughter’s brand-new world. I still loved my knobs and switches, but I had learned that sometimes, progress wasn’t about replacing the old, but about finding new ways to enhance our lives.
