三、阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
(A)
The meaning of the word "volunteer"may be a little
different in different countries, but it usually means "one
who offers his or her services".There are many different
ways in which people can volunteer, such as taking care of
sick people, working in homes for homeless children, and
picking up garbage()from beaches and parks.
Volunteers may work within their own countries or in other
countries. They are often people with a strong wish to help
those who are less fortunate than themselves.Volunteers
don't expect any kind of pay.
At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person
may have the ability to offer services that help other people.
Tracy,a good friend of mine, however, recently came back
from India with a new idea of what being a volunteer means.
She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother
Teresa's homes in Calcutta(加尔各答).The following is her
story.
"I first heard about Mother Teresa in my high school.
We watched a video about her work in India and all over the
world.I was so moved by her spirit to help others and her
endless love for every human being that after I graduated
from high school,I wanted to try her kind of work.So with
two friends I flew to Calcutta for a few weeks.
"I was asked to work in a home for sick people.I
helped wash clothes and sheets, and served lunch.I also fed
the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried
to cheer them up.I felt it was better to share with them
than to think that I had helped them.To be honest,I don't
think I was helping very much.It was then that I realized
that I had not really come to help, but to learn about and
experience another culture that helped improve my own
understanding of life and the world.
()21.Tracy started her work as a volunteer
A.after she met Mother Teresa
B.after she finished high school
C.when she was touring Calcutta
D.when she was working in a hospital
()22.Why did Tracy choose to be a volunteer?
A.She liked to work with Mother Teresa.
B.She had already had some experience.
C.She was asked by Mother Teresa.
D.She wanted to follow Mother Teresa's example.
()23.In a home for sick people,Tracy did something
EXCEPT
A.washing clothes and sheets
B.passing out lunch
C.taking a walk with them
D.feeding the weak people
(B)
Superheroes are characters in stories who use superpowers
to save and protect people.
Heroes in the real world do not have superhuman
powers.Often they are only common people but they do
have special gifts.

of control rushed towards them at high speed.Without
thinking twice, she pushed her six pupils out of the way
with all her strength, but she herself was hit by the car.She
was thrown about 25 metres and later passed away in the
hospital.
★“Though I was born with half a left arm,Idon't
think I'm unlucky,said Ms Yang,a 35-year-old woman
from a small village in Hunan. She is a successful Xiang
embroidery()artist who is also a shopkeeper.With a
lot of hard training, she kept developing her skills, saying
that her disability won't stop her.She also helps to spread
the culture to many other places and make more people learn

I used to teach English as a volunteer in Africa. Some
of my friends asked me,"Don't you miss your home,
Emily?"I told them I was the only child in my family and I
truly had an easy life at home. However,I got bored of
having a "good"time at home and needed a change.
The kids from Africa were eager(渴望的)to learn and
easy to teach.I was surprised at how smart they were.
Talking with them made me think a lot. When you come
from a poor area, you must grow up fast and deal with all
kinds of difficult situations.
Volunteering has always been easy for me because I
don't like to do the same things every day.My job also gives
me the freedom to choose when and where I work.Although
I don't get paid for volunteering,I'm old enough to know
that money is not the only way to get rewarded().The
experience itself is priceless.I make lots of connections with
good people.Also,when I volunteer,I often work with
people who are worse off than I am.That has taught me to
practise thankfulness for what I have.Believe me,this life
lesson is worth a million dollars.
I am not a perfect person.In a sense,I think I'm selfish
(自私的).But you don't have to be a perfect,selfless
person to volunteer. In fact,I have benefited a lot from
volunteering.Volunteering helps others, and it can also help
yourself too.The biggest benefit of volunteering is that it
helps you develop your character, and that's the passport to
a rich and meaningful life.
()27.Why did Emily volunteer in Africa?
A.She lived a really difficult life at home.
B.She hoped to learn a new language there.
C.She wanted to experience something new.
D.She was asked to go there by her family
members.
()28.How were the African kids in Emily's eyes in
Paragraph 2?
A.Quite teachable.
B.Hard to deal with.
C.Bored of learning.
D.Not interested in English at all.
()29.What does Emily get from her volunteering
experience?
A.The freedom to choose a well-paid job.
B.The chance to connect with good people a lot.
C.The ability to express thanks for what she
has lost.
D.A large amount of money as a reward.
()30.Which of the following would Emily most probably
agree with?
A.Use it or lose it.
B.Old habits die hard.
C.Giving is receiving.
D.Money is everything in life.

Volunteering is a great way to bring positive change to
people, communities and society in general. The word
"volunteering"started being used in the 18th century when
people were willingly joining the military service(服兵役).
Today, the word is not so much connected with the military
service,but with community service.
Official organized volunteering appeared in the 19th
century and became more popular in the 20th century. And
the biggest development in volunteering was brought by the
internet.Organizations can reach people more easily online.
Helpful platforms were raised, and more volunteers became
interested when they found out about different opportunities.
What are the benefits of volunteering? We can learn a
lot from volunteering. It connects us to others. It is a great
way to meet new people with common interests. It also
helps us make new friends, and improve our social skills.
Volunteering brings fun in our life.It is a fun and easy
way to explore our interests and passions. Many people
volunteer in order to make time for hobbies outside of work.
For example,if a person has a desk job and long to spend
time outdoors,he might consider volunteering to help plant
a community garden, walk dogs for an animal shelter,or
help out at a children's camp.
Volunteering can also be helpful for our careers().
If we are considering a new career, volunteering can help us
get experience in other areas and meet people in the field.
