Grammar
Modal verbs: should and had better
P89
Zhang Xin is calling his cousin Zhang Lei for advice on designing a poster. Read the dialogue and pay attention to the words in bold.
We can use should to say what is best or right to do. We can use had better to give strong advice in a particular situation.
我们用should来表示做什么是最佳的或正确的;用had better在特定情境中给出强烈的建议。
We use should and had better with the base form of a verb.
The negative form of had better is had better not.
Let’s sum up the rules!
should和had better后接动词原形使用。
had better的否定形式是had better not。
Do you remember the "ought to" we learnt in Unit 5?
should not = shouldn't
Ought to is similar in meaning to should.
You ought to read more English books.
had better = 'd better
had better not = 'd better not
ought to意思上与should相似,翻译为“应该”。两者语气和使用场景区别我们在上个单元已经学习过,总而言之,should为一般语气,适用于大多数场景,ought to语气正式严肃,适用于出于责任义务的提议场景。
