There are many volunteer opportunities to choose from. The key is to find a position that you would enjoy. It’s also important to make sure that your commitment matches the organization’s needs. Besides, the opportunities that match both your goals and interests are most likely to be fun and successful.
Consider several volunteer possibilities
Don’t limit yourself to just one organization or one specific type of job. Try to visit different organizations if necessary.
Where to find volunteer opportunities
● Libraries or senior centers
● Local animal shelters, rescue organizations, or wildlife centers.
● Youth organizations, sports teams, and after-school programs.
How much time should you volunteer?
Volunteering doesn’t have to take over your life to be beneficial. In fact, research shows that just two to three hours per week, or about 100 hours a year, can be the most beneficial — to both you and your chosen causes. The important thing is to volunteer only the amount of time that feels comfortable to you.
Getting the most out of volunteering
Ask questions. You can ask if the experience is right for your skills, your goals, and the time you have to spend.
Don’t be afraid to make a change. Don’t force yourself into a bad fit or feel forced to stick with a volunteer role you dislike. Talk to the organization about changing your focus or look for a different organization that’s a better fit.
Enjoy yourself. If you’ re not enjoying yourself, ask yourself why. Finding what’s bothering you can help you decide how to go forward.

I’ve always liked designing things. I remember drawing clothes and shoes when I was eight, and I made my first skirt aged nine. Then three years ago, I began making shoes, and I now spend my free time doing that.
I became interested in making shoes when my cousin told me about an online shoe-making course. I immediately asked my mum to book me on a four-day course in London to see if I liked it, and then I did a ten-day course there in the summer holidays.
I love the courses. On the longer one, I made four pairs of shoes! I couldn’t believe it. The teachers were excellent. That’s what was best about the classes. They made us work really hard but they wanted all their students to have fun, too.
I’ve made about 15 pairs of shoes now. At the moment I’m making a pair of trainers (运动鞋) using an old pair of jeans, but I’ve used all kinds of different things before, from old leather handbags to old cotton dresses!
Making shoes has changed my plans for the future. I know now that I want to be a designer, but not a shoe designer. I’ve decided I’ll do home design. I’ve designed lots of shoes and also some clothes, so I’d like to try something new.

The UK’s national parks are known for their wonderful mountains, forests, lakes and coasts. In UK law they have specific purposes, such as protecting nature. The authorities have to consider these purposes when they are deciding where to create a new national park. Now, plans from the UK, Welsh and Scottish governments suggest setting up three more. Not everyone thinks national parks are a good idea, though. Some people say they attract too many visitors, who do more harm than good. Others say all the UK’s countryside should be protected. Do we need more national parks?
Some people believe that national parks are good for nature. They are full of beautiful scenery (风景) and — more importantly — give protection to plants and animals. Green spaces are also very important in fighting climate change because plants and trees take polluting gases.More national parks mean more protected nature. National parks are of great importance in the day-to-day lives of people, too. They attract tourists who support many businesses, including restaurants, hotels and activity centres. Also, having more green areas gives more people a chance to get out into nature. In fact, there are lots of studies that have shown spending time in the natural world is good for people’s mental and physical health.
However, others think national parks are not as environmentally friendly as they seem. They attract lots of tourists but these visitors often harm the environment by dropping litter, disturbing (惊扰) wildlife and travelling in polluting cars. Also, national parks drive up the cost of buying or renting (出租) housing in nearby areas. Homes in the area are often bought by rich people from far away who want to use them just for holidays, instead of living there all the time. This means fewer people live in the area and businesses find it hard to survive. Besides, why do we need to create national parks in order to look after nature? We should be protecting all our green spaces.
9. What do the governments plan to do?
A. Establish an organization.
B. Set up three more national parks.
C. Make laws to protect nature.
D. Stop people from climbing mountains.
10. What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A. Green spaces can fight climate change.
B. All tourists support building restaurants.
C. To get out into nature is a waste of time.
D. National parks are built for parking cars.
11. What is people’s attitude towards creating national parks in paragraph 3?
A. Positive B. Flexible.
C. Unconcerned. D. Negative.
12. What is the best title for the text?
A. Do We Need More National Parks?
B. How Do We Build More National Parks?
C. Do You Like Visiting National Parks?
D. How Do You Make National Parks Popular?
【答案】9. B 10. A 11. D 12. A

How to be a Responsible Person
Being responsible is an important quality that results in personal growth and harmonious relationships. Here are some practical ways to be a responsible person.
___13___
Doing just the things you are asked to do is responsible. But to show that you can care for yourself and others, you need to do things before you’re asked. For instance, maybe you notice that no one’s taken out the trash today. Don’t just leave it for someone else to do. Do it yourself. Alternatively, maybe no one has made plans for dinner. Get a plan together, and make dinner for everyone.
Show maturity in relationships
Don’t let your relationships fade away. Organize gatherings or host events to show your responsibility and to show you are actively trying to spend time with them. When problems come up in relationships, try to find a way to solve them instead of blaming the other person.
___14___
Start by doing what you need to get done first, and then you can relax and have fun afterward. For instance, if you need to do the dishes but you want to go outside, do the dishes first. Sometimes, you may think you don’t have enough time to get your chores done, but you likely do if you put down your phone, tablet, or computer, because social media can drain a lot of your time without you even realizing it.
___15___
Whether you’re still in high school or you’re an adult, you should have goals for your money. That way, you have something to work towards and a reason to put money away regularly. Besides, make a budget. Don’t spend more money than you have and avoid getting into debt.

C. A course designer. D. A clothes designer.
