Learning objectives
In this lesson, we will be able to:
Grasp the specific steps and correct behaviors for staying safe during, before, and after an earthquake, including what to do indoors, outdoors, in a vehicle, and near the sea.
Through role-playing the conversation and discussing earthquake safety plans at school, students can fluently express earthquake safety-related opinions, use the learned phrases to communicate, and improve their oral English fluency and accuracy in describing emergency responses.
Develop students' team-work spirit and communication skills in group discussions and class planning of earthquake safety plans, and encourage them to care about and help each other in emergency situations.

1 Read the questions and give your
answers.
A What do you think happened in the pictures?
B What can you do to stay safe in this situation?
2 Read the passage and underline
what you should do if you are in a car or near the sea in an earthquake.
Earthquakes can occur anytime, so it is important to be prepared and know how to protect yourself. What should you do if one happens? Stay calm as the earth begins to shake.
If you are inside when the earthquake starts, get under a table or a bed. You need to have something strong around you to protect you from falling objects. Do not stand near walls or windows.Stay out of the kitchen. Also, never get into a lift during an earthquake.
2 Read the passage and underline
what you should do if you are in a car or near the sea in an earthquake.
If you are outside, get to an open area as fast as you can. Stay away from buildings and trees. If you are in a vehicle, pull over to place far from trees or tall buildings and stay inside. If you are close to the sea, try to get as far away from the water as possible. Earthquakes can cause huge, dangerous waves that appear suddenly.
When the earthquake is over, there is still plenty of danger. If you see a fire, quickly move outdoors to an open area. Keep an eye out for things that can fall on you. Only make necessary phone calls. Too many calls will bring down the phone system.
Staying calm can improve your chances of survival in an earthquake. It is not easy, but it can save your life.
